Magic lantern, the Canon 7D firmware 2.0.5?

Hello,
Anyone know if there is already informing the magic lantern, the Canon 7D firmware 2.0.5?

With my 5D3 I had both firmware versions on the memory card and then I could switch back and forth between versions whenever I wanted. Magic  Lantern now works with the latest 5D3 firmware so there is no need for that now.
The 7D still needs to be running 2.0.3 in order to run Magic lantern.
EDIT: If your camera had previous firmware versions, it is very easy to backdate and then later upgrade firmware versions.
If your 7D came new fron Canon with 2.0.5 installed there is a slight chance it won't backdate. I heard of one factrory new 5D3 owner who had some problems but it was never confirmed why he had problems.

  • (canon 5D 3 Magic Lantern .raw) fps issue in premiere pro. Pls help

I took a shot with Canon 5D 3 Magic Lantern(.raw converted to cdng) at 23.97 fps which is reflecting as 24 fps in the premiere metadata? How to change it to 23.97 fps without affecting the quality of my clip?

Thank you Simon, I did try it more than twice, same problem appears, the same converter setting worked well with other similar clips. Still looking for an answer from someone who have experienced similar issues and have a resolution. Thanks in advance

  • Speedgrade and the Cinema DNG from Magic Lantern

    Hi guys !
I was really thrilled yesterday when i saw that speedgrade CC 2014 can now read the Cinema DNG files from 5D Mark III & Magic Lantern... But i did a few tests today and would like to know what you're thinking of these : I just did a few tests with Speedgrade CC 2014 and i think there is still a decoding problem in it
Here is what i get when i put my DNGs in After Effects :
    Before any correction :
    After correction :
And here is what i get in Speedgrade :
    Before any correction :
    After correction :
Any idea why ? The white balance is wrong and i can't correct it... The highlights seems to be wrong too...

That is a regular behaviour in SG, please have a look here: https://forums.adobe.com/message/5291090#5291090#5291090  and BMD Cinema Camera RAW Files Import Issues | Adobe Community
Also you could create a .look which white balance the cDNG, or try the Ikonoskope A-Cam matrix presets. That's into Timeline - Color Space Default.
    Thanks,

  • What is After Effects and Magic Lantern?

Hi.  I'm new to all of this, so I am asking at least twenty questions today.
I'm curious if Adobe After Effects is used independantly of Premier or if it can be used as a plug in?
Also, just wondering what Magic Lantern is.  I believe this is something that can be added to a camera's firmware?  Is this worth doing, or can the software be used outside the camera?
    Thanks,
    Jeff

After Effects (AE) is a completely separate program - it's part of Creative Suite / Creative Cloud but can also be purchased individually. It does not run as a plugin to Premiere Pro, but you can 'send' a Premiere Pro sequence to AE for editing.
Magic Lantern is a firmware hack for Canon DSLR cameras (EOS series). It allows access to features not found in the standard firmware.

  • Magic lantern

    Hi,
I've been looking for a straight forward, simply explained example of a high quality Magic Lantern RAW video workflow. I'm new to this and what I've been finding is way over my head. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm starting with RAW video files captured on a 5D Mark II.
    Thanks for any reply,

  • Workflow for Post Processing Magic Lantern RAW Video?

    Dear Adobe Community,
I am interested in learning what steps/workflow fellow DSLR, Magic Lantern users take to Edit, Color Grade and add FX to their RAW video?  Here is my untested thought process so far:
Adjust the Exposure, White Balance, Lens Distortion, Etc of DNGs in Adobe Camera Raw.
Import DNG image sequence into Premiere Pro for Editing
Use Dynamic Link to Color Grade in Speed Grade
Use Dynamic Link to add effects in After Effects
    Render out in Premiere Pro
One of the concerns I have is that I've read on the Magic Lantern Forums that Premiere Pro will reduce 14 Bit DNG to 8 Bit.  Is this something you've encountered?  Is there a workaround?
I am fairly new to all of this and would greatly appreciate any feedback to point me in the right direction for Post Processing Magic Lantern Raw Video files.  I have a subscription to Lynda.com as well if you have any suggestions for courses to look at.
    Thank-you for your time.

Nothing Adobe makes can read MLV or RAW video files, so you have to use something else to convert them into CinemaDNG (a folder of images) or a high bit depth movie file (ProRes etc.) - there are many tools listed in the ML forum which can do that.
Premiere Pro can import cDNG footage but it struggles to play back in real time, and will not allow you to grade it using Camera Raw. To do that you have to use After Effects. The workflow is supposed to be "ingest in Prelude, edit in Premiere Pro, color in SpeedGrade", but quite frankly the learning curve for SG is massive. Adobe's attitude to CinemaDNG is strange; although the standard is open, support is only coded for very specific models of camera and the CC suite assumes a Hollywood workflow where professional colorists (who spend years learning how to use the software) operate offline from the rest of the edit, usually after all the cuts are made. It's not set up for a typical lone DSLR filmmaker, which is quite frankly why a lot of ML users prefer another well-known way to resolve the problem.
The 'fast and dirty' approach to getting a cinematic grade in Premiere would be to apply LUT files to the footage using the Lumetri effect (basically running SpeedGrade presets), or you can hand-grade it using the inbuilt Color Corrector tools - but that doesn't cover the other important stuff that ACR can do, such as lens correction, alignment, noise reduction, camera calibration profiles, etc. - for that, you should import the cDNG footage into After Effects (which does support ACR), correct and calibrate the frames, then export back to something high quality that Premiere can work with (such as DNxHD or ProRes 444). You won't notice any visual loss in quality, and Premiere then will play the timeline without struggling, but it takes a loooong time to chew through every clip.
As to if Adobe applications will ever support MLV files natively - well, since Adobe relies on close partnerships with camera manufacturers including Canon, you can guess what would happen if Adobe ever endorsed it. The only scenario I can imagine is if MLV is adopted in-camera by a major DC manufacturer (Alexa, etc) so vendors can support it without slapping Canon in the face. Flying pigs come to mind.

  • Is "Magic Lantern" Harmful to your camera ?

I'm trying to find a way to get rid of the focus square on my screen, because when i'm trying to use my camera as a web cam for broadcasting it always show the square. They give the solution of instaling the firmware of "Magic Lantern" But i don't know if that would harm my camera. Can someone please help me with this. ???

You don't mention what particular camera you want to use ML on. That might make a difference.
I don't shoot video with my DSLRs, so have not had a reason to install ML on my cameras and haven't done so. I've got some interest in hyperfocal macro techniques and have considered getting it for that. Occasionally in researching it I've heard/read reports of cameras ending up "bricked"... I guess there's always some minimal risk when hacking a camera like this, but the problems seem to mostly occur when using a Beta version of ML or using ML on a camera that's not on the supported and tested list, such as a new model.
ML resides on the camera's memory card and is essentially an overlay of the firmware to enhance the functions of the camera. Seems pretty safe and fully reversable in most instances.
However, using a DSLR for continuous video as a webcam seems like it would be hard on the batteries, shutter mechanism and sensor, might lead to overheating and would drain power pretty rapidly. Especially for a lower resolution web purposes, I think I'd be shopping for a small vid cam instead. But, hey, that's just me.
Maybe if you tell us what model camera you are thinking of using ML with, someone will have more experience with the particular combination.

  • What are the correct settings for the Canon 5D mark II in FCP 7 ?

I am shooting full HD at 23s97 fps.. tried making a preset for the Canon but when I import fils FCP always wants to change to appropriate settings for this file type but doesn't tell me what that is...
    (latest firmware installed)
Please, can someone provide all the correct settings for me?
And also, why doesn't the camera show up on the desktop/in the menus when attached to the mac? I have ro use EOS utility every time I want to get anything off of the camera... and FCP doesn't see it either. That's just not right - FCP MUST recognise my camera!! : (
Please help - I don't want to start editing until I have the right settings for this footage.
    Thanks
    Jim

    Welcome to the Boards
Not sure what you mean with the following, looks like a word dropped?
I have ro use EOS utility every time I want to get anything off of the camera...
Anyway, some more specs on your system could help point where the issue is. With the new Plug-In by Canon you can Log & Transfer from the Flash Card (not sure how you connected the camera.) Alternatively you could just drag the files in (but make sure to keep all files such as THM in case you use Log and Transfer later.)
Generally it is best to transcode to Pro Res to be able to work with the files in Final Cut. (Log & Transfer should do that, or using Compressor/Mpeg Streamclip.)
It (Final Cut) is probably changing the timeline to match the codec, or depending on your last preset used, just switching things around. In other words if you were editing in DV and had a set up for that, new sequences would default to that and if you try to ad anything else you will get the message.
Take a look at the search over there -> to look for the Canon 5D threads for some more info.
What I would do is just pull one of the clips in to start and look at what the sequence settings are aftr Final Cut changes them for you - they should be fine generally, though you will want to change Codecs to Pro Res.
I like just batch conversion of all my clips from the 5D Markk II and then work from there. (I do not hook up the camera to the computer, just use a card reader.)

  • Canon 7D firmware and ACR in CS5

    Hi all.
Before I embark on the (irreversible) upgrade to firmware 2.0 on my Canon 7D, could somebody confirm that my CR2 raw files will still be readable in PhotoShop/Bridge CS5 (i.e. with ACR 6.X)? I haven’t seen any moaning, which sort of implies that they will be, but I’d rather be sure.
    Ta

I have just received confirmation from a friend with a 7D that he's both applied the 2.0 firmware upgrade successfully and has had no problems opening his raw files with LightRoom 4.1 or Photoshop CS5/ACR 6.7 (he hasn't moved up to Photoshop CS6 yet).

  • What camera raw default settings would you use for the Canon 5D Mark 3. I have PS CS6.  Thank you.

What camera raw default settings would you use for the Canon 5D Mark 3. I have PS CS6.  Thank you.

Really, this is a question you should be asking yourself...
What do you shoot? Makes a difference...
Typical ISO that you shoot? Makes a difference...
Shooting for clients or yourself? Makes a difference...
Look, there is no magic bullet...the ACR/LR "Default" should only be changed for those adjustments you make 70-90% of the time and sould not be confused with image by image adjustments...
So, as asked, your question can not really be answered other than to say, use a default that suits you.

  • Canon 70D - firmware feature request - separate photo / video picture style

    Hello, Canon.
I dont know, if there is a dedicated way of making a feature request for a firmware update?
I have a simple problem, so please take a look at it. When I choose a picture style in photo mode, the same style is activating for the video mode and vice-versa.
The previous camera that I had, the 60D, was remembering the video and the photo picture style separately.
I will appreciate it, if you make this behaviour available for the 70D.
It can cause a headache, if you need to shoot a video with a custom picture style, but then forget to turn it off for a photo shoot, or the other way around.
    Thanks.

This is just a user-based forum, you won't get any technical Canon response here.  Though one of the Canon admins may be able to point you to a place where you could file your request.
I wouldn't get your hopes up though, Canon doesn't really do a lot of feature add-ons through firmware, mostly they just put bandaides on mistakes.
Although there are exceptions. The firmware updates for the 7D, 5DIII and 1DX among them.

  • HT4356 Help printing from the ipad with the Canon MG6220

I have the canon mg6220...i can get my imac and iphone 4 to print...but can not get the ipad2 to print to it.  It keeps saying "no airprint printers found"  Yes it is connected to the same wifi network and yes everything is up to date.  At first, the ipad2 didn't have the IOS 5.1 so I thought that was the answer, but I updated it and STILL cannot get it to print.  Just keeps saying no airprint printers found.
    Any suggestions?

Have you tried to restart your iPad?
Can the iPad use Airprint on other Wi-Fi networks?
Check this article out -> iOS: AirPrint 101
    Additional Information
If you are unable to print, or if you see the message "No AirPrint Printers Found"
    Verify that the printer:
Has power and is turned on.   If it has power, turn the printer off and then on again to see if that resolves the issue.
Is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as the iOS device.
Has the latest firmware version installed.
Has paper with enough ink or toner installed.
Is free of any errors displayed on the printer's control panel.
If necessary, consult the printer documentation or contact the printer vendor for help with  the above steps.
    Notes:
Avoid connecting AirPrint-capable printers to the USB port of Apple AirPort Base Stations or Time Capsules. Doing so can enable traditional AirPort printing from a Mac, but it will not enable AirPrint functions for iOS devices. If you cannot use Wi-Fi networking to connect the AirPrint-capable printer, use an Ethernet connection from the AirPrint-capable printer to the Apple AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule.
Wi-Fi printers can take several minutes to join a Wi-Fi network after being turned on. Ensure that the printer is connected to the Wi-Fi network before attempting to print.

  • Irritated with the Canon 6D wireless Capabilities.

Maybe I was confused on what the full capabilities of the Canon 6D's wireless capabilities or maybe I am missing something. After numerous attempts and way too much time in finally getting my 6D connected to my laptop through the EOS Utility I was rather disappointed.
This is what I thought I was going to be able to do:  Take a picture with my 6D and then preview the picture and select something in the preview menu to transfer the picture to the laptop.  If this is not possible, this is something that needs to be fixed in the software of the EOS Utility and in the firmware.  If this is possible, please someone tell me what am I missing.
When I click on "Starts to download images" within the EOS Utility, I get a "there are no images in the camera or memory card that match download conditions" error.  (Which makes me think that selecting the pictures and transferring them from the camera is possible but I cannot seem to find the function to make it work)
I really do love the 6D because I was holding off until Canon finally produced a body with built in GPS and wireless capabilities.  I know that it is going to be impossible to build a perfect camera under the cost of a car but I think this would be a simple fix to the software and firmware.  Who knows, maybe a fix to this user is in order also.
    Other Problems That was annoying:
    -  The manual to set up the wireless connection (EOS 6D (WG) Wi-Fi Function Instruction Manual) was not intuitive nor any type of logical flow.  Why should I have to jump from section to section to do something?
    -  The manual failed to mention that I had to connect to the camera from the computer and not the other way around.  (very annoying since I was expecting the pairing software to detect the connection automatically)
    - The EOS Utility manual needs to be separated by the model of the camera.  The attempt of making a single manual for all the models is a failure.  It was so confusing that after awhile in trying figuring out what portion applied to the 6D and what didn't that I had to print it out and re-edit the manual so it had only the parts that pertained to me.
I would greatly appreciate any help and shared frustrations with this.

If you’re using EOS Utility Wirelessly then the photos will be stored on your computer already (you may be able to do both, as you can when tethered, but I haven’t tried to make sure).  So that may be why you get the error to transfer it.
Personally I found the EOS Utility to be useless when connected wirelessly.  It is FAR too slow for my workflow.  It just wasn’t worth the small advantage of not using a tether.  However, the EOS Remote app for my phone/tablet is quite useful.  It’s still very “beta”, but the preview images transfer much faster (the RAW images are still stored on the camera).
Other than that, I feel your frustration.  But you have to remember, this is one of the introductory WiFi cameras from Canon.  The technology is still young, and it’s very rough around the edges.  I’m glad my camera has it, but I went into it viewing it as a nice perk as opposed to a major feature.  I really didn’t expect much from it.

  • Anybody heard anything about the 5D iii firmware update in April?

Has anybody heard any news about when the firmware update for the 5D3 with uncompressed HDMI out will be released? As far as I know, it was originally scheduled for release today (April 1st), but haven't heard any updates since October.
    Thanks.

The flash problem fix was announced much later and was set for late April.  The original April firmware release didn't give a date.

You're probably right that Canon will screw those of us waiting for the earlier announced enhancements and not release anything until the flash issue is resolved.  The problem with that is, if they insist on waiting for the flash fix before releasing the feature enhancement firmware, they could easily miss an April release if the problem ends up requiring more time to implement a solution...

  • Is there a way to edit raw files from the Canon 5DMkIII in Lightroom 2?

I rented a Canon 5DMkIII this past weekend and shot in RAW. I'm running Lightroom 2.7 on my laptop because I have a pre-Intel dual-G5 tower at home and can't run LR3 or LR4 on a pre-Intel chip machine and I tend to share my libraries across my laptop to my tower and back (so I need to be able to open the LR files on both machines, which is why I'm still using LR2 ... I know, I know, I need to upgrade but that's going to be a hefty investment!)... In the meantime, I'm wondering if there's a way to view/edit the raw files in Lightroom? They won't even import (I get the message upon import attempt: "Some import operations were not performed. (97)")... I know the information is there, though, because I used PhotoMechanic to do the initial sort of my images that I wanted to keep/edit. I see there's ACR (Adobe Camera Raw) 6.7 (I think it is) that supports the 5DMkIII, but I'd prefer to edit across the board in Lightroom, it's so much faster. Is there something I can download to still edit my raw files in LR2? Or, do I have to buy the update and get LR4 if I want to edit my 5DMkIII RAW files? Thanks in advance for your help!!

Support for the canon 5d Mk111 was introduced in LR 4, ACR 6.7 so you will have to use the Adobe DNG Converter 6.7 or later to convert the raw files to dng format before you can import and work with the files in LR 2. The converter is a free download from Adobe and is available at this link.
