Magic Mouse - excessive battery drain

I love the design and the flexibility of the new Magic Mouse! It's a next generation mouse!
However, I would really like a wired version. The battery life is not acceptable for me. I am a heavy user (up to 16 hrs a day) and it works only up to two weeks if I don't turn it off/on all the time. I don't want just another thing to worry about. Also, it's too heavy because of batteries inside... and the side buttons should be there, they'll fit in the design nicely...
Also, The Better Touch tool and similar utilities should be in the OS by default. Ahh.. I guess I'll be back on my good old wired Mighty Mouse after all the excitement...
Any advice on what batteries to use? Is there some third-party kit to convert Magic Mouse into the normal wired mouse?

Here's 48 batteries for $8.54. I think that should keep you going for awhile.

I've had mine for 3 weeks exactly and my mouse is at 55%. Then again I'm only on a couple of hours a day. 16 hours a day is more then I might be on in a week. In my G5 I used a Microsoft mouse that had a cradle. I loved it but I love this one more. I understand your pain but I can't imagine Apple ever thought anyone would use this mouse for 16 hours a day.I agree a cradle would be a great idea but Apple is into simplicity not a cradle with a wire ruining the esthetic look of the new iMac.

  • IPad iOS 6.1.2 update causing excessive battery drain

I have noticed in other discussions that a number of iPhone users have experienced excessive battery drain after updating to iOS 6.1.2.
I am now experiencing this problem in a big way after updating to iOS 6.1.2 on an iPad 3.   Prior to this update, my battery life was very good, dropping to only 70% to 80% at the end of a typical day of use.
After the update, which was said to be to fix a previious Mail Exchange battery drain issue (one that I was not experiencing), my battery was dropping to 30% after a few hours.   It was literally like holding a bucket with a hole in the bottom and watching the water drain out.
I noticed that my Usage time and Standby time were identical, even though the ipad had been in sleep mode much of the time.   This indicates to me that something about this patch is causing the iPad not to actually sleep when in sleep mode.
The iPhone discussion forums point to a number of possible fixes, including uninstalling all emails and re-installing them all the way to a total erasure and reinstalation of everything.  This worked for some, but not for all victims of this problem.
Until Apple recognizes this problem and sends out another update, one less painful solution that worked for me was to change all of my email accounts from Push to Fetch every 15 minutes.   This has stopped the problem for me, for now. so I wanted to share this in case anyone else is experiencing similar problems.
If other community members have discovered other short term or long term fixes then please do post here.
Apple, I await an update that will allow me to restore Push functionality, or instructions on what steps will work to properly restore full functionality (what to remove and reinstall etc).

Just to confirm that I have the same problem.  I updated to iOS6.1.2 on Friday 1 March 2013, I have an iPad2.  And Saturday morning my iPad was 0% after having nodded off on a 78% full battery.  This has NEVER happened before, and has become a daily occurrence.  I have now amended my Mail to fetch and hope it works.

  • Still experiencing excessive battery drain on your iPod Touch (after iOS 4)

    Hello folks,
I am wondering just how many of you are still experiencing excessive battery drain on your iPod, after updating your iOS to 4.0 (and beyond)?
If you are, I highly suggest that you submit a report to:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipodtouch.html
... and keep submitting reports until this problem is solved.
Some have suggested switching the iPod to Airplane mode when it is not in use but really, that isn't very acceptable as a permanent solution. The simply act of placing it in standby should be enough... just like it prior to iOS 4.x.
A similar problem crept up on my iPhone 4 (with the release of iOS 4.3) but Apple did promptly solve it with iOS 4.3.1. It would be nice to receive the same consideration for the iPod Touch 2nd gen... OR at least provide a way to go back to iOS 3.1.3.
The following is my bug report to Apple:
    Hardware: iPod Touch 2nd Gen
Since the release of iOS 4.0, the iPod has been unacceptably poor for standby longevity. The battery now drains completely within 24 hours.
Prior to iOS 4.0, the iPod could retain a standby charge for, at least, one week.
In use, with WiFi, 4-5 hours of run-time was typically expected, however, after the iOS 4.0 and subsequent iOS updates (up to the current iOS 4.2.1 (8C148) the run-time is about 2 hours.
There are a lot of iPod users complaining about this problem in the forums. Please solve this problem.

If someone has a suite of apps on their device and Apple pushes an update and then immediately afterward the battery drain starts, then from my point of view, the new OS is to blame.
Your point of view seems to be flawed and not valid.
Apple has no control of 3rd party Apps.
Maybe the older Apps are not behaving properly with the new iOS?
Maybe the 3rd party Apps need an update to comply to the new iOS?
Like I said above, everyone uses different Apps and we have no idea who has what Apps.
Please don't shift the blame, and why won't Apple address this publically or allow a pathway back?
Why do you think Apple needs to address this if you don't even want to try testing things yourself?
    Report your own testing here.
Turning Airplane mode on will start in your testing. If you battery lasts longer, then try the next step like turning the Airplane mode off and turn then off all the Apps that use Push or Fetch. Try and identify the problematic App that might be draining the battery.
I am on my 5th day now and the battery is still FULLY charged.
I have no need for Apple to fix anything.
My suggestion would be to test the things I described above rather than placing the blame on 4.2.1 iOS.
If nothing works, and your battery still drains, then you probably have a defective iPod Touch or battery.
I am certainly not saying some people don't have defective devices or batteries, they just need to do a little more testing to find the problem.
Good Luck and let us know your testing results.

  • Excessive battery drain during talk time?

I know that the iPhone 4s and its battery drain has been discussed here infinitum...I myself have been reading all the threads for the past week and trying various fixes before doing a full restore and setting my phone up as new.  However, I am still experiencing what would seem to be an excessive drain ONLY during talk time.
My standby time runs close to the specs, my wi-fi and 3G web surfing are not up to specs but certainly no bad shakes and better than most.
Still, my battery depletes 1% every 2 minutes while I talk.
Does anyone experience this issue or know why it might occur? I will say that I use Verizon and we do not often have a strong connection where I live.  2-3 bars max.  Could this be the culprit?

Yes, signal strength is the culprit. The phone uses 10 times as much power at 1 bar as it does at 5 bars (Not just the iPhone; all phones do). Reason: The lower the signal strength the higher the output power from the phone. So the phone's transmitter can safely connect at 50 mw with 5 bars, but for the weakest signal it goes up to 600 mw (and the phone gets hot). In between it uses an inbetween amount of power. At 5 bars it should go down 1% for every 4 1/2 minutes.

  • Magic mouse 0% battery level - But batteries are new!

I just received my Magic Mouse today. It paired fine, connected fine and worked fine until I downloaded the software. Then the tracking became extremely slow and jerky. Tthe worst part is that the Battery level says 0% and I keep getting a pop-up window telling me the battery level is low - But I'm using brand new batteries??? I even tried several sets.
Can anyone help? I'm on a Mac Pro with Leopard.

    Hello t:
Try trashing a preference file (com.apple.bluetooth.plist) and restarting. Then delete the mouse, restart, and then add it back in.

  • Magic Mouse - New Battery fail

My Magic Mouse was down to 5% so I changed the batterys. However, since I have done that and put fresh one's in the green light is not coming on on the Mouse and thus not working.
I have used fresh battery's from 2 different packs.
    Any ideas?

    Are the batteries in backwards?

  • Magic Mouse Heavy Battery Use.

Hello. I seem to be getting poor battery performance from my Apple Magic Mouse.
Last couple times have been about 1 month each--doesnt seem that good to me and a bit of a pain. Any comments? Maybe I should be turning it off at night? Thanks for any info.

Another good idea is to set your computer to sleep after a certain amount of time. If your computer is on constantly, your bluetooth mouse/keyboard will be on as well. If your computer goes to sleep after 15 minutes, or an hour, or whatever works the best for you, you'll conserve battery life.
My computer sleeps after a half hour of inactivity, and I get a couple of months of battery life on my keyboard and magic mouse.
I do have an apple battery charger, which is convenient, but any rechargeable batteries work fine.

  • Magic Mouse leaked battery fluid

    Hello,
I have a Magic Mouse, bought with my MacBook Pro in February 2011. I didn't used the mouse so often and the battery charge was on 90% when I last used it.
Today I saw that the battery leaked and the mouse is full of something like white powder. I never changed the batteries, I just used the original delivered Energizer.
I always turned off the mouse when it wasn't in use.
My question is, can I send the mouse to the repair center and get a new one for free? I also can't check the serial number online.

    Hello:
The short answer to your question is no.  The mouse is out of warranty and it is your responsibility to assure that batteries are reasonably fresh.

  • IOS 4.3.1 Update Contributing to excessive battery drain

I updated my Iphone 4 to the new IOS 4.3.1. I am having battery issues now. Losing 10-15% per hr even if I am not using the phone, email, etc. I have read that it could be caused by several things. I turned off "ping", no effect. I read that I needed to disable push, notifications, location services, wifi, etc. Nothing works still draining much faster than before the update. I tried one final thing hooked up to Itunes and did a restore. Some speculated on the boards that the IOS was correpted when updated. Well still no effect. Battery draining fast. I know it is not a hardware issue as it started right after the update. Any additional ideas?

Ok, so an update for those that are having the same issue... I restored my Iphone in Itunes and instead of loading the backup. I installed as a new phone. This worked and the phone is operating normal again. Power stable no issues same as before the update. Also, as a side by side comparison of the two installs. One with Iphone backup and the other without. In both cases I had no app's, music, etc loaded. So the difference is not due to app's running (multitasking) or incompatible issues. Hope this helps for those that are experiencing the same problem.....

  • ThinkPad E455 Excessive Battery Drains When Power Off

I bought a new ThinkPad E455 two months ago with AMD processor and I use Windows 7 (64-bit) as my operating system. The problem is, since a week ago, when I turn off my laptop (completely shut-down, not hibernating nor sleeping), the battery looses 14% in less than 24 hours. This problem has never happened before. When I search for solution, apparently my problem is similar to https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/11e-Windows-E-and-Edge-series/E535-High-battery-drain-when-laptop-is-powered-off/ta-p/1249897 and https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/11e-Windows-E-and-Edge-series/E530-Battery-drains-and-power-manager-issue/ta-p/1249887 and https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/11e-Windows-E-and-Edge-series/E440-battery-drains-when-powered-off/m-p/1527086/highlight/true#M18743. It appears that the power drains happened in other type of ThinkPad as well. Moreover, it seems that this problem is not limited to ThinkPad series (e.g: http://www.tomsguide.com/answers/id-2324931/laptop-battery-drains-powered-shutdown.html), and more surprisingly, some of other brands experience this condition as well. My question is, what causes the power drain? I mean, the laptop just worked fine for a period of time (in my case it is two months), if it was trigerred by something, what is it? I looked for the technical updating BIOS solution in http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/documents/ht077068, but unfortunately the series E455 is not in the list. Of course, updating the BIOS using incompatible version is not recommended by the technical support. Please help me.

See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Configuration_and_Power_Interface When you think the laptop is powered off it's actually in ACPI Power State S5 with power being supplied to the power button and some of the USB sockets. So, when you shut down the laptop and then removed the power cord, if the BIOS version was lower than 1.13, the laptop was still draining the battery.I followed your suggestion, and it seems solving the problem, thank you. However, another problem arises just recently. When I was playing a game on my laptop, the battery capacity is decreasing when the AC power connected (as described by both lenovo and Windows battery gauge). I post this problem in https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/11e-Windows-E-and-Edge-series/ThinkPad-E455-Battery-Capacity-Reduced-When-Connected-to-AC/td-p/2106218. Oddly, the problem (seems) does not occur when I quit the game to windows. Why was this happen?

  • Escapade excessive battery drain

I have an Escapade phone which works fine in the US.  When I took it to Europe and switched it to GSM mode, I found that the battery drained completely within half an hour on standby.  When I charged it in Europe, it took only about 15 mins before it said it was fully charged and then the same thing would happen.  Now that I am back in the US and on CDMA, the battery is behaving normally again.
    Any ideas?
Is this a defective phone in GSM mode?
Is there some setting that I have not set?
Not that the phone worked fine in Europe i.e. could send/receive texts and calls.  It is just that the battery did not last more than half an hour when the phone was in standby.
    Thank you

    Thank you for the reply.
The phone is updated to the latest rev of firmware (and was before I went to Europe).
I find it hard to understand why the phone battery would drain in standby mode on a GSM network within about 30 mins or so.  If I do not use the phone for a converstaion, then the only activity should be monitoring the local **bleep** received signal strength and if switching basestations, then camping on to the new basestation.  I was very static whilst roaming in Europe (i.e. was not moving through a lot of cell sites).  Also a colleague of mine who has the same phone and was in the same site, did not have the problem.
Given this, any thoughts on how I can further diagnose the problem - from the US.  My concern is that when I go to Europe again, I will have the same issue and be left without phone service.  Note that back in the US the phone works fine.
    Thanks

  • Excessive Battery Drain

I have two Verizon Escalade phones. My battery on one of them constantly drains down with no phone use in about 8 hours. I have swapped batteries between phones, but it makes no difference - the one phone keeps draining the battery. I have checked all the settings and they are identical. The GPS mode on both phones is set to "911 Only".
    Any ideas?

This phone has been running the battery down for a couple months. The phone was never dropped, nor had it ever gotten wet. When I pulled out the battery and SIM Card, following proper power-down, all contacts were free of corrosion, but I still cleaned them with Isopropyl Alcohol and a cotton swab. I tried removing the battery when the phone was still on, waited for 30 seconds, re-installed it, and powered-up the phone - no difference. I'm not eligible for an upgrade until 02/2012.
@ TomPtz  I can definitely understand how frustrating it can be to have your battery drain.  It’s seems like you have been proactive in troubleshooting the issue.  Upon reviewing the thread to this forum it seems to me that this could be a device issue.  Please PM me your mobile telephone number and I will review the account and issue a replacement device to you.  Hope to hear from you soon.  Thanks.

  • Magic Mouse and battery life....

Well, today my Magic Mouse died...had to replace batteries. So I didn't get 3 weeks out of the original batteries....I received it on October 28...if this keeps up, I can see where the mouse will go on craigslist....very disappointed. Anyone else have to replace batteries already? I don't physically turn it off; the mighty mouse would automatically power down after period of no use....i'll try to power it off everytime I'm going to stop using it for awhile but there's no way this will work for me.....

Actually, the Magic Mouse is only for wireless keyboards and the extended keyboard is only available wired.
That's rubbish. I have a WIRED extended keyboard and a Magic Mouse. Which keyboard you use has absolutely nothing to do with which mouse you use.
Rechargable batteries have a lifespan and eventually end up in the waste stream like other batteries
After hundreds of uses. So instead of sending hundreds of batteries to the waste, you're only sending one. How can that not be better for the environment?
they don't have the power or charge life of a precharged disposable
As long as they have enough power to power the thing they're powering, what does it matter? And if they don't last as long (which is also bogus, just buy higher mAh ones) what does that matter? You just recharge them. Anybody who knows anything about environmental waste will tell you rechargeable batteries are better.
What would be the reason not to have a wired version Magic Mouse and what would be the reason not to have a wireless extended keyboard?
Once again - there is absolutely NOTHING stopping you from having both a wireless Magic Mouse and a wired extended keyboard.

  • How? Rediscover Magic Mouse following battery replacement?

Every time I replace batteries in my Magic Mouse I've had to access System Preferences | Mouse to activate the "rediscovery" process.  Fortunately, I have a USB mouse that allows me to open, and then navigate, System Preferences.
Shouldn't my iMac automatically find the Magic Mouse?
    Solutions?

Shouldn't my iMac automatically find the Magic Mouse?
    Yes.
    Solutions?
Clicking the mouse repetitively usually works.  I would also make the mouse a favorite.

  • X200 power management issue - excessive battery drain

I've been having a bit of an issue for some time with my X200 that I'm hoping somone may be able to offfer some insight on.  My 9 cell battery only gives about 6 hours on a full charge.  The laptop is about 5 months old, but the battery is in good shape (82kwh out of 84kwh capacity).
On an initial startup the power usage is normal, hovering at around 7-8 watts (looking at the Battery tab wattage in Power Manager). This level roughly maintains even if i am doing light tasks.  This strikes me as normal, and would give the regular nine or ten hours of battery life I had when i first got the computer.
However, if I allow the computer to either sleep or hibernate, even a few minutes after resume the power consumption (AT IDLING, nothing open) rises to an idling pace of about 11-12 watts. This doesn't go back down to the pre-sleep/hibernate levels, ever (until a restart).  The 25% or so increase in power consuption after sleep/hibernate happens regardless of which power profile I'm in (though the above usage #'s assume I'm in max battery mode with 4 bars of screeen brightness os so).
This means that 25% or so more power is being consumed after the computer resumes from sleep or hibernate, with a corresponding drop in battery life.  Can anyone offer some insight on why this might be, ways I might go about trying to figure out where the excesssive power onsumption comes from, and/ or possible fixes?
