Magic Mouse Limited Functionality w/OSx 10.4.11

I haven't updated my OS for some time now. I recently purchased a new keyboard and Magic Mouse and have discovered that many of the Magic Mouse's features are not available with 10.4.11. After checking the Apple site, I'm not clear as to which version I should update to. I want to do as few updates as possible but still reap the benefits of all the Magic Mouse features. Can anyone help, please?

Several users of Tiger 10.4.11 have and use the new Magic Mouse.
That said, I don't have a new mouse and prefer my old Apple Pro
all black (green circuit board is visible inside) mouse over others.
Some issues people had early on were discussed online in several
other forums and probably in these Apple Discussions also. Perhaps
a search may yield some clues into what others had found or done.
A few issues (and in comments, other thoughts) on the magic mouse:

Options for customizing magic mouse & trackpad (third party shareware)

I'd venture to guess a Google of, ' magic mouse issues Tiger ' would
bring up some questions and answers. Given the fact there really are
not so many updates for Tiger (in fact few to none) a specific one for
just the mouse may be lacking.
From what I can tell, the real support for the Magic Mouse begins in
Leopard 10.5.8 with the extras all working correctly and the options
available. So, only the basics in Tiger work. See:

  • Magic mouse scrolling function is dead

My magic mouse is about a year and 1/2 old - has always worked perfectly.  Last night the scrolling function just stopped working entirely.  The "right click" function seems to be a bit more sensitive, too. (When clicking where I always have for my "left click" I'm frequently triggering the right click function.)
Tried new batteries, tried re-syncing mouse, looked for updates......help....
Time for a new one?  Is there a possible fix for this?

    Hello:
You could try resetting the PRAM...but that probably will not help.  I have the same "click" problem, but, in my case, I think it is my fat fingers.

  • Magic Mouse not functioning properly

After update to 10.8.2  mouse works for a while with many problems. if turn it off and after turn it on works for a short time but have again problem with
many lag to scrolling and right click not work properly.
    Any idea how to fix?

I have an late 2010 MBP 13", core 2 duo and upgraded to 8Gb ram, 256Gb SSD. I've noticed the same behavior since I upgraded to Moutain Lion 10.8.2. The cursor seems to Lag sometimes (sometimes it looks like it's freezed - just like when the batteries are dying), and sometimes it went back fast. I talked to Apple Support here in Brazil and they are suggesting to downgrade the OS to a lower version than 10.8.2 and wait for a fix to upgrade. I've read in other forums that sometimes it's related to a older version of Dropbox installed (upgrading might get fixed - didn't worked for me though). Hope to get a fix soon!!

  • Magic Mouse - browser navigation backswipe not working.

Hey, is anyone else having a failing experience using the back nagivagation swipe function of the magic mouse?
As of OSX Mavericks install, the single swipe does not swipe back to previous pages visited.
I am sure this is a bug, and kind of surprised it wasn't caught during beta?
I am however, running dual screens (15" retina monitor, and 27" thunderbolt) but can't imagine that would make any difference.

Nadnerb, you are using the "magic" mouse correct?
I might suggest switching the power off the magic mouse, then under your bluetooth devices, remove the magic mouse. Then turn on the mouse, and reconnect it bluetooth again.
Then test the functionality of the mouse. If it still does not scroll, go into the system:mouse settings and check that those functions are enabled.
If they are, and it's still unable to scroll, is it 100% not working under Safari - or are all applications not working with the scroll? If no applications aren't working, there may be a chance that the sensor in the magic mouse failed.
Would be surprised if that was the case.

  • Turn off magic mouse scroll zoom

Whenever I'm in Illustrator and am holding down Shift Option Command the slightest scroll on the mouse makes everything zoom all over the place. How do I turn this off? I found an old thread on this  and the Adobe guy said it's Apple's fault and I should buy a new mouse. No. That's not the answer.

The ineffectiveness of the Magic Mouse preference settings in OSX as regards scrolling is most definitely Apple's fault. Here is what you need to know:

About The Problem:

Apple is not going to fix this problem. It's been an issue dating back nearly a decade and continues still. It is either beyond the scope of Apple's programming intelligence, or they simply don't care about you and your problems. Apple's programming intelligence pretty much speaking for itself, the only option left is that Apple doesn't care. It's one of the perks of the modern day tech business paradigm, where companies like Apple have so many millions of customers and so much momentum behind their market share, they don't have to care about you, the single, obscure nobody, with your Apple computer you've already paid for. Apple also being a die-hard fan-based enterprise, it knows full well that for every one of us who might have a problem such as this, there are at least a hundred thousand others who would put up with just about anything just to be associated with the logo of an apple with a bite taken out.

The Fix:

Fortunately there is a brilliant, enterprising soul (or group of souls) behind the development of an app called MagicPrefs which more than compensates for Apple's indifference to this & other related problems. It not only addresses the inability to turn off the ever-annoying scroll action that happens anytime our fingers brush across the case of the mouse, it offers myriad other functions you might like.

You owe it to yourself to check out MagicPrefs, and thank the developers for giving us a means to rise above this bit of Apple stupidity.

  • Magic mouse suddenly acting strange?

My magic mouse stopped functioning normally... single click acts like double click... Text selection tool is wonky; drag select words ends up selecting entire paragraph... could not move objects around in InDesign... can barely move finder and application windows, it lags and move only a short distance... delayed reactions all round. I cannot even move icons around on the desktop…I am using Wacom tablet (usb) right now.
    Changed batteries
Tried to turn bluetooth off and back on; no change.
Tried removing apple and bluetooh related plist's: no change.
Also tried to lower the 'power' setting on my Bell modem default was 4 went down to 3 (whatever that means) also made no difference. I Don’t want to reduce the quality of my internet connection to fix interference on my bluetooth signal (if this is the issue). I even pulled the power plug on my modem no wiFi
... and still, my mouse has gone rogue!
I have read quite a few posts (some go back a few years) with similar issues and have yet to find a solution. Zapping P ram seem a little excessive - any thoughts?
Any solutions? Is it possible, these little magic mice just simply have a short lifespan  : (
The only computer/software changes were done months ago (new internet service & hardware Early Jan) and (Mavericks when it was released last year)
Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance!
    Dbonte

Hi seventy one, Thanks again for all your help. I finally got the magic mouse to work properly... After I spent two days reading posts, troubleshooting and finally posting my querie... It came back to the 1st thing i looked at!
    The batteries.
I have been using (the same 4) rechargable AA batteries since the life of the mouse. And even though they showed as 100% charged in the system mouse preferences, the batteries must have weakened over time.
I popped in a fresh set of (off the shelf) Duracells and POW! no more crazy mouse action. I know that Apple has it's own charger & rechargable batteries for its products; so I may look into this. In the meantime, I think it pays to have good quality batteries for something I use (and need) every day.
Im a bit embarrased that I didn't figure this out in the beginning : [
happy that its working again : )

  • Will the magic mouse track pad functions work with OSX 10.8.5?

    Yes, they'll work with 10.8.5.

  • OSX 10.5, Boot Camp, XP, Magic Mouse, Device Mgr Code 43 error on Bluetooth

I'm running Boot Camp and XP on my MacBook Pro (OSX 10.5) and my Bluetooth has stopped working - on the Device Manager I'm getting a yellow '!' next to the "Apple Built-in Bluetooth" symbol in the Device Manager which reports that Windows has stopped the Bluetooth device because it has problems (Code 43).
This is how it happened...I had a Logitech mouse that wasn't working vey well so I bought the Magic Mouse (at enormous cost!!!). I installed it on the Mac OS no problem but when it came to run it on XP, although it could see the mouse and pair to it, when you moved the mouse the pointer on the screen wouldn't move.
I then found out about the Boot Camp 2.2 update which I installed okay. In fact this cured a problem I had had with the tab key on my wireless keyboard erroneously giving a '-' sign. However, it did not make the mouse work so I tried removing all the old Logitech software and drivers at which point Bluetooth stopped working completely giving the error described above.
Has anyone any idea how I can get this fixed? Any help much appreciated.
    Nigel

I got this to work. I found that restarting didn't make any difference but the problem seemed to be such a low-level hardware issue that I tried switching the Mac off (and removing the battery for good measure) and then restarting XP again worked. When I did this, I got a message saying that the machine had found lots new hardware starting with the 'Microsoft BT Emulator'.
The mouse still doesn't give me all the functions I have with the Mac OS but that's fine as far as I'm concerned.

  • Unable to swipe/scroll using Magic Mouse in OSX 10.6.2

    Hi guys,
I recently purchased (20.12.09) a MacBook Pro 17" Unibody which came preloaded with OSX 10.6.2. I tried to bluetooth sync my Magic Mouse with it tonight and, despite the fact it recognises the mouse and allows it to perform the usual left and right-finger clicks, it does not permit scrolling or swipe functions. Also, in the System Preferences menu, the mouse doesn't show up with Magic Mouse "options"...it only shows up with generic mouse functions. The computer basically thinks it is a standard two button mouse with a wheel on it, I think - the strange thing is, however, that the touchpad DOES work, as I can right-click...the scroll/swipe functions do not work though, as stated.
I have had a read over various threads and topics here and on the broader Internet about this problem, but all discussions seem to give the impression that 10.6.2 was designed to natively support all the function of the Magic Mouse. Other discussions have stated that when similar problems have been encountered, that the solution is to delete the USBOverdrive.kext file contained within System/Library/Extensions. I don't have that file, so that solution won't work for me.
The people who are having success with this problem seem to have upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard. Could it be that my mouse doesn't work because I don't have previous requisite data from 10.5.x?
    Any assistance will be appreciated.
    Cheers.

After consulting with Apple Phone Support, I have rectified this issue. For some reason, in my 10.6.2 update, the file which provides usability for external wireless mice was not included.
The package can be found here: http://support.apple.com/kb/dl950

  • Scrolling on Magic mouse no longer work after OSX update

I have just performed an OSX update and after restarting I immediately noticed that the scrolling function and other gestures no longer work on the magic mouse. I have also noticed that no gestures work on the Mac Book Pro track pad. The only function that works on the mouse is moving the mouse pointer and the buttons. Same goes for the track pad. Some great update that was. Has anyone else discovered this and how do I repair this loss of function? When I first initiated the update, I saw that there was a download required which mention some improvements for the mouse/keyboard but mainly updates required to support the new magic track pad. Is it possible to revert this individual update and if so how? Thanks.

You were almost correct, but not quite. You can see updates in /Library/Updates. I'm not sure what receipts is, but it didn't contain the track pad/mouse update package I was expecting to see. However, I did eventually find it in Updates after a trip to my local Apple store. What happened was that the original update process completed about 95% but for some reason crashed. When I restarted, it appeared that there was nothing wrong, until that is I tried to use the mouse and track pad. I presume that the update process uninstalled the previous package but didn't actually install the new update. I downloaded the the latest update from Apple, but it appeared to be older than what I downloaded from the Update process, so it wouldn't install. I would suggest that here lies a bug. The package install process did detect the new trackpad / mouse package but it didn't detect that it wasn't installed and should have prompted me to install it.
