Magic Mouse preference panel missing

I just put a magic mouse into operation and while it is "working" it is not doing some things I want it to and I am unable to change any settings because the "Mouse" preference panel has not changed to a dedicated "Magic Mouse" pref panel. All the Mouse pref panel provides is what amounts to a demo of the features of a Magic Mouse. No customization is possible.
I've looked through other posting in this site to no avail. I have read about a conflict with something called USB Overdrive but I am not in possession of that.
Any suggestions?

Hello:
Try resetting the PRAM and SMC

  • Magic Mouse Control Panel Restore?

Previous steer mouse driver with mighty mouse, now with lion with magic mouse, i don't see proper magic mouse control panel. how to restore?

Steer mouse isn't compatible with the Magic Mouse.  You can uninstall steer mouse drivers with these instructions:

Then your Magic Mouse Preferences panes will show.

  • Sharing Preferences panel missing

This is probably an old issue, I just can't seem to locate it here anywhere, and Googling only produces fixes I have already tried. Some of the Macs I support (all running 10.4.11) are missing the Sharing preferences panel in System Preferences. This would not be so bad--it doesn't seem to affect performance at all--but that I cannot re-name machines without access to that panel. I have installed the ARD client, installed the CD/DVD Sharing update, both of which seem to have fixed this in the past. Not now. What's up?

Hi jreyome, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Could be many things, but usually preventable and caused by pre-existing OS or Disk corruption...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates.
May even need to do an Archive and Install if you have room on the HD, but saves all your files and gives a new OS...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
I only use Software Update to see what is needed, then get them for real via...
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/
That way I can wait a week or so, check the forums for potential problems, and get Permissions & such in order before installing.

  • Magic Mouse Preferences

Since installing Lion the "Mouse Preferences" don't work. I turned off all six options and they refuse to stop the Magic Mouse from scrolling in all directions. What can I do? Thanks.

The scrolling function has been moved in Lion to System Preferences > Universal Access > Mouse & Trackpad tab > mouse options... button > uncheck scrolling.

  • DNG preferences panel missing options

In the DNG preferences panel, version 5.4.0.57 only 3 options appear. Compatibility, Preview & Original Raw File, under Compatibility in custom settings I can check Linear & uncompressed but nowhere can I find "Image Conversion Method" or "Compression" check boxes. I have installed DNG converter on both my PC (XP-sp3) and my laptop (Vista 64bit) with identical results.
    Where am I going wrong?
Some converted file receive a 1:3 compression others a 1:4 compression, what gives?
    Regards Larry

You can still control exactly the same things you could before, just the UI has changed.
Linear is the conversion method option, with a different UI.  No functionality has been lost.
Uncompressed is the compression option, with a different UI.  No functionality has been lost.
The reason the compression and linear options have been moved to a custom dialog is very few users truly understood them, and many users would change their default values in ways that wasted disk space because they did not understand what they were doing or why they were doing it.  Only in VERY rare use cases does is make any sense to use to custom compatibility option.  The main compatibly version option does exactly what nearly all users need to do, when they want to create DNG files that are readable in older versions of Camera Raw.
Can you please explain exactly why you think you need to control the custom options?

  • Magic mouse doesnt work with new macbook air

    Hey guys,
Just bought the magic mouse and it pairs just fine to my new 13" macbook air. But it only moves around and clicks and nothing else. Does not scroll or do any multitouch functions. I have checked all software is up to date and all settings are correct.
    Thanks in advance.

I was having the same issues as Cawlin and called up AppleCare. They suggested resetting the PRAM, and then a SMC reset. That didn't work, so they had me do a re-install of the OS and system updates. None of that worked, and then it suddenly occurred to me that I had installed USB Overdrive a little while back and turns out that it was the culprit. A quick uninstall and everything's back to normal. The mouse preference panel is now displaying the correct options for the magic mouse. So if you have any 3rd party software for a mouse or keyboard installed, I would suggest uninstalling or disabling it and see if that does the trick.

  • Magic Mouse Left Click Problem

I got a Magic Mouse for Christmas this morning and set up with my Macbook Pro. The setup went quickly and well. I was able to move the cursor around my screen with the Magic Mouse.
However, the click buttons don't work. I have tried left and right clicking and nothing happens.
Is there a problem with my mouse or did I miss something in the setup?
    Thanks.

I had the same problem this evening. Is it possible that you had your USB or trackpad mouse buttons reversed when you switched to the Bluetooth mouse?
I normally reverse my mouse buttons (like for left handed people). My index finger naturally rests on the upper right corner of the mouse. When I try to use the normal button config, my hand and forearm fatigue in no time. Reversing the buttons allows me keep my index finger relaxed for all the normal mouse clicking, then I reach left for the "right" button.
It also discourages others from using my computer!
Anyhow... When I connected to the Magic Mouse, the buttons didn't work. I turned it off and connected the USB mouse, returned it to "right-handed" mode and switched back to the Magic Mouse, and the buttons work correctly now. I then use the Magic Mouse control panel to set Secondary click to left.
    Hope that helps!

  • Can't set up new Magic Mouse scrolling with Lion

I am running Lion on my MacBook Pro and just got a brand new Magic Mouse. I can pair it with the computer and move the pointer, right and left click, but no scrolling or middle button clicking. When I go into System Preferences and select Mouse, I only have the options to "Move content in the direction of finger movement when scrolling," Tracking Speed, Double-Click Speed, Scrolling Speed, Primary mouse button and Zoom using scroll wheel while holding ^Control.
Nowhere do I see the little video and gestures window like I see for my trackpad preferences. I thought maybe I had to install the Wireless Mouse Software, but all I can find is a version for Snow Leopard and my computer will not open the file because it says it's incompatible.
Is scrolling (just up, down, left or right like in a browser) not possible in Lion with a Magic Mouse? What am I missing?

Your missing the Magic Mouse Preference pane.  Sometimes 3rd party drivers interfere with this.  USB overdrive has been reported the most.  Your Magic Mouse Preferences should look like this:
If you can find the culprit and uninstall it, this pane should return.

  • Inadvertant web page zooming with new magic mouse

Just added a magic mouse to my 2006 mac mini.  Now web pages suddenly magnify randomly, and can't get them to return to normal size.  How do I correct this?

I've found that (both through personal experience, and seeing reports on the forums) the Magic Mouse has problems falsely detecting the double-tap (which is what has activated the zoom).
You can leave the feature on, and double-tap the mouse to zoom out, or turn off "Double-tap to zoom" in the Mouse preference panel.

  • Can't swipe between Finder pages using Magic Mouse

I was able to do this yesterday but must have clicked something accidentally so I can no longer do this. Swipe function has been selected in magic mouse preferences. Please help.

  • Why can't I scroll / Multi-touch with my new Magic Mouse?

I just got my first magic mouse and paired it with my 2008 model white macbook. It works as a mouse, but none of the multi-touch functionality is working. Here's the details
    - I updated to lion recently, and i want to take advantage of the gesture technology. but my macbook is *PRE MULTI-TOUCH* so the track pad does none of those cool tricks.  I thought that using the magic mouse I could use all those nifty features....
    - I read on another forum that people were having trouble with USB OverdriveX, which I've used for a while.  I removed the software with AppCleaner, which is supposed to clean out the plists and everything, and I restarted, but nothing's changed.
    - I downloaded MagicPrefs, and although it shows me the magic mouse details screen, messing with the settings doesn't change anything, i still can't even scroll. Also i set the menu icon to show me the remaining battery life of my device, and instead of that it is grayed out. Does this mean it doesn't recognize my mouse?
    - Finally, and this is what's most frustrating me: Everywhere I look I see the magic mouse preferance pane and it looks NOTHING like mine.  I don't have a 'magic mouse' preference pane in my system preferences, and when i click on 'mouse' all i get is this:
I haven't come across anyone else with this problem, and I get the feeling that this might once again be a failure of my aging machine.  But every other element of mac software is running, and the mouse recognizes movement, left click, and right click.  Any advice would be helpful, thanks!

I can't be sure it hasn't gotten mucked up with all those other steps you took, but here's what I know.
The Magic Mouse has some gestures, yes, but not all those found in a multi-touch trackpad. You can get a Magic Trackpad for that if you really want it all to work just the same.
However, to fix your issue, try uninstalling third-party mouse drivers (such as Logitech or Microsoft), USB Overdrive, BetterTouchTool, Jitouch, and/or drivers for other input-managing devices. Not getting the Magic Mouse preferences is usually the result of some third-party driver getting in the way. AppCleaner is a good way to do this, but you might want to search google for instructions specific to whatever drivers you may have installed and now want to remove.
Once you think you've got them all cleaned out, open bluetooth preferences and remove your Magic Mouse. Now re-add it and see if you get the Magic Mouse preferences screens that you've been seeing online.
    Hopefully this has fixed it.
If so, I will add that I have greatly expanded my Magic Mouse capabilities with Better Touch Tool and never had the kinds of issues you're having now. If you do get the Magic Mouse set up correctly, do not fear to install Better Touch Tool after the fact. I know from experience it will not cause such havoc!

  • Magic Mouse and acceleration

Does anyone know if there's a way to completely disable OS X's acceleration curve with the Magic Mouse? I really want to use this mouse with my new iMac, but unless I can find a way to disable acceleration like I could with my Razer (and older Apple mice), this thing is just a fancy paperweight.

    Enter the following in Terminal:
    defaults write -g com.apple.mouse.scaling -1
Once you do this do NOT adjust the speed setting in the Magic Mouse preference pane. If you do it will override what you did in Terminal and you will have to do it again. By completely disabling mouse acceleration I can finally use my Magic Mouse and and get from one side of the screen to the other with small mouse movements. The only downside is that very small movements is much more difficult. Takes a bit getting used to but for the most part I'm happy with it.

  • Mouse preference changes for primary button, effects trackpad button

After connecting a Kensington bluetooth travel mouse/trackball device, the mouse tab appears in the Keyboard and Mouse preference panel. I set the Primary mouse button to right. All is right in the would, mouse works great.
Now, when I use the MacBook Pro without the mouse, the trackpad requires a two finger click for the primary click and a no finger click for a secondary click.
There is no mouse tab to change this behavior back. If you do not have the two finger click turned on, the mac has no click device.
There is no kensington software installed on the macintosh.
    Is this as designed?
Is there a command line "default" command I can issue if I have no access to a mouse, but have access via ssh from somewhere else on the network.
I have started to use the mouse right handed, but now my coffee cup is on the wrong side of my mac.

I went to the Apple store tonight, and with the help of a kindly employee pulled out a few mice and macbooks and learned the following:
    1. This problem is replicable on all new (April, 2008) macbook pros
    2. It does NOT happen with Apple supermice. Apple mice bring up a different system preference pane, which apparently does not carry over to the trackpad BUT
    3. When we plugged a generic USB 2 button mouse (not a logitech, but I forget the brand) into the display macbooks pros, the bug was right there, exactly where it was on mine.
The good news is that I will not need to ship my macbook pro back to apple for a new motherboard (as the low level tech support suggested), since my computer isn't defective.
The bad news is that you have to be a left handed, generic two button mouse user on one of the new macbook pros to hit this bug, which is a small universe of users. So it may take a while to get apple's attention.
As unfair as it seems, the only workaround for now (without going to the terminal-- see the end of this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1445925&tstart=0) appears to be buying an apple 2 button mouse.

  • Turn off magic mouse scroll zoom

Whenever I'm in Illustrator and am holding down Shift Option Command the slightest scroll on the mouse makes everything zoom all over the place. How do I turn this off? I found an old thread on this  and the Adobe guy said it's Apple's fault and I should buy a new mouse. No. That's not the answer.

The ineffectiveness of the Magic Mouse preference settings in OSX as regards scrolling is most definitely Apple's fault. Here is what you need to know:

About The Problem:

Apple is not going to fix this problem. It's been an issue dating back nearly a decade and continues still. It is either beyond the scope of Apple's programming intelligence, or they simply don't care about you and your problems. Apple's programming intelligence pretty much speaking for itself, the only option left is that Apple doesn't care. It's one of the perks of the modern day tech business paradigm, where companies like Apple have so many millions of customers and so much momentum behind their market share, they don't have to care about you, the single, obscure nobody, with your Apple computer you've already paid for. Apple also being a die-hard fan-based enterprise, it knows full well that for every one of us who might have a problem such as this, there are at least a hundred thousand others who would put up with just about anything just to be associated with the logo of an apple with a bite taken out.

The Fix:

Fortunately there is a brilliant, enterprising soul (or group of souls) behind the development of an app called MagicPrefs which more than compensates for Apple's indifference to this & other related problems. It not only addresses the inability to turn off the ever-annoying scroll action that happens anytime our fingers brush across the case of the mouse, it offers myriad other functions you might like.

You owe it to yourself to check out MagicPrefs, and thank the developers for giving us a means to rise above this bit of Apple stupidity.

  • Magic Mouse + Mission Controls

i tried using two finger to double click on my newly bought magic mouse but it did not activate mission controls.  I go to system preference/mission controls/keyboard and mouse shortcut, the only selection is "middle mouse button" or "secondary mouse button".
Is my magic mouse having problem or setting?
    appreciate if someone can help.
