Magic mouse stopped responding

This week my magic mouse stopped working.  Replacing the batteries didn't help.
It shows up under my Bluetooth devices at the top, but doesn't work.  When I try to connect to it under system preferences it doesn't find a mouse.
I can right click on the mouse and get the menu, but it will not move the pointer arrow around the screen.
I'm on a Macbook Pro - OS X 10.6.8
Any ideas?

I'm having the same problem.
Solutions anyone?
I'm on an iMac - OS X 10.8.2
Thanks.

  • Mouse stops responding and instead brings up a box with options like Search in Spotlight, etc..  What's happening?

Sometimes when I'm typing and click on wireless mouse to correct a misspelling or the like, the mouse stops responding--freezes--and instead brings up a box with one set of options or another.  One box includes  Search in Spotlight, Search in Google, Look in Dictionary, etc..  The other box includes Help, Cut, Copy, Paste, Font, etc.
On some days, like yesterday, this happens every few minutes.  Today, however, it hasn't happened yet--oops, spoke too soon...it just happened again!
I've checked mouse preferences and tried different options there to no avail.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks...

Soundl like you are activating the mouse "right click" by mistake and and getting contextual menus instead of the standard left click. I suggest that you turn off the right click option for a while in pref's and use the combination of;  "control + mouse click" to access these menus when you actually want them. This will ensure that a miss click is not the problem.
If the problem is fixed, then turn the right click option back on so you can adjust your usage of the mouse with care to click on the right or left side of the mouse for standard or right clicks. this way you know that the problem is you and not the mouse.

  • Mouse stops responding when closing applications...

When I close an application, the mouse stops responding for about 1-3 seconds. I continue to gesture on the trackpad until it suddenly comes back. It it fairly consistent when it starts...but the behavior doesn't start consistently. A reboot usually helps...but I am not interested in rebooting every time I have a problem with the mouse cursor.

Turns out it is the option to ignore trackpad input in the preferences. When I would close an application, it would think that I was typing and would ignore the trackpad for a second. I turned it off and I am back to normal.

  • Qosmio X500 Bluetooth mouse stops responding

    Hi,
I have the latest bluetooth stack / drivers installed. (Yes, I downloaded the latest from http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/bluetooth/index.php?page=download-toshiba) All drivers are always updated to the latest including the wireless drivers as well.
Problem: About every 20 - 40 minutes my Logitech bluetooth mouse stops responding. The cursor gets stuck and it won't move at all.
I tried unpairing / pairing the mouse, that helped, but, then again after 1 hour it stuck again. I re-installed the BT stack and that did not help as well.
The only way I can use my mouse again when stuck is when I click "Disable Bluetooth Function" and then I "Enable Bluetooth function".
I do this about 10 times a day and you have no idea how annoying it can get.
I bought a new Logitech Bluetooth mouse (Logitech M555b) and that did not help as well.
If anyone could help me out here I would deeply appreciate it.
    Thanks,
    Mike

Thats strange but unfortunately; I dont have right solution for you but just some advices.
First of all I googled for this Logitech M555b BT mouse and found several threads about the issues with this mouse.
The connection issue happens with other computers running windows 7 or XP or iOS (Macbook).
So it seems that this issue is not related to Toshiba BT stack.
A friend of mine use other BT mouse from Logitech and it works fine all the time using the Bluetooth stack.
I recommend checking the Logitech forum to get further details:

  • Magic Mouse stops working under Yosemite

Since upgrading to Yosemite, I've been experiencing an issue where occasionally the Magic Mouse stops working.  I sit there and turn it off, turn it back on, sit there and click the mouse and move it around, but it doesn't connect to the computer.  I go into the Bluetooth Preferences and unpair it, but it doesn't show up on the list of devices and so I can't re-pair it.  Turning the Bluetooth off and then back on doesn't make it show up.  So far, the only thing that seems to help is to restart the computer completely.
Has anyone else been experiencing this problem?

My Mac Mini's power button changed functionality with Mavericks.  Now with a fast click of the power button the Mini sleeps.  A little longer and you get a shut down dialog, and of course, hard shutdown holding for longer still.  I don't know if the MacBook works like that in Yosemite.  If it does, use the button to Sleep, then again to wake, and 99% of the time you have a Magic Mouse again, with Mavericks at least.  Even if the button doesn't work, you can use control-fn-F2 to give the Apple Menu focus, down arrow to go down to Sleep, and Enter to make it happen.  Then wake however you normally do.  Still a nuisance, but slightly less intrusive than Restart, particularly if you have something you haven't saved yet. Worth a try maybe.
I only boot Yosemite for short periods from an external drive so far, so I can't vouch that this will work for it.  I come from a background where you don't install version zero of anything.  I have to say, with a clean install, so far I don't see the problems I read about here.  Maybe I need to work for a whole day with Yosemite sometime.
PS. I just tried turning off the mouse in Yosemite (and saw the disconnection reported).  Went to Sleep.  Turned on the mouse while Sleeping, Woke Up, and the  Magic Mouse reconnected just like Startup.

  • My magic mouse stopped working.

My magic mouse stopped working. I thought it was the battery, changed them, but it keeps telling me the mouse is not discoverable. It’s turned on, but just will not do anything. Any suggestions?

    Hi Susan,
I would still clean the battery terminals and the contacts inside the compartment.
Also, shake the mouse a little, see if there is any rattle.   The batteries could be loose.   If they are not Apple, Duracell or Energiser, that may well be the case.

  • Magic mouse stopped working after upgrading to Mountain Lion 10.8.5

Today I upgraded Mountain Lion to 10.8.5 (via the App Store) on my newest iMac. First of all, immediately after the upgrade restart, my USB keyboard (which I prefer because I want the keypad) wasn't recognised; now, on the new Magic Mouse (which came with the iMac) the left and middle click are not being recognised. Whichever side I click, I just get the seconary click pop up box as if I were right clicking. I have checked the mouse settings -- everything is fine; I have checked the batteries -- they are fine; I have rebooted, to no avail.
So I've had to resort to an old USB mouse.
Can anyone help? I'm pretty fed up about having paid for a mouse that I can't use.
    Thanks

Forgot to mention that the scroll stopped, too! (Good job I hadn't thrown away old faithful mouse!)
However, it's an intermittent fault so I could be tempted to think it's the mouse itself, if it hadn't happened immediately after I upgraded and if the upgrade it hadn't thrown up the keyboard error message, too.
I'll try the Combo (and I have Time Machine running on the whole system so can restore, if necessary).
I'll report back. Thanks for all your help.

  • Magic Mouse stops clicking randomly: need to right click desktop few times.

For some reason, randomly, my Magic Mouse will stop clicking/registering clicks (left or right/anything but movement) and I'll have to right click on the desktop 1-2 times for it to "come back to life"...it's very strange. I've tried readding it, etc. to no avail...?

I ended up here after experiencing the same problem (seemingly random and intermittent inability to scroll with Magic Mouse or trackpad when using Firefox) and searching Mozilla and Apple support forums. There are a few separate reports in both communities that refer to the issue seeming to exist only when using Firefox with a Magic Mouse. There are, of course, other threads that don't have that specific combination, but the original post is not a unique occurrence.
In my own case, I am experiencing this problem on two MacBook Pros. I did not have this problem until recently. Also recently I bought a Magic Mouse but have no idea how significant that is (the trackpad also becomes unresponsive on both machines). It does seem unlikely to be coincidence, but still could be, of course. Like most people now, I guess, I gave up manual updating of Firefox a while ago to spare myself the constant reminders and so I don't know what version exactly I had when this started but it is now 31.0 (although Firefox is just waiting for me to quit in order to update to 32.0).
If I quit and reopen Firefox, all is well for a while but then the problem returns. I can still scroll by dragging the scroller in the scroll bar (thankfully not completely gone, as yet) and appreciate the comment about using the up arrow and down arrow keys, which I hadn't thought to do. It seemed to be only one of my MacBooks for a few days, but now seems to be both. Somewhat bizarrely, while concluding this post, Firefox on both computers has resumed scrolling without, as far as I can recall, a restart. I'll aim to give an update after a day or two (as so many final posts say...)

  • I have Mac OS 10.6.8. Finder seems to be corrupt. Mouse stops responding. How do you fix Finder?

I have Mac Intel Base running OS 10.6.8. Finder seems to be corrupt. I have checked the system and it seems to be working properly. However, my Mouse and keyboard stop responding when I relaunch finder, and I have a very slow start up time (10 to 15 minutes till the mouse and keyboard respond). I ran Disk Warrior and got a lot of permission and file errors. Disk Warrior says they are fixed, but every time I run Disk Warrior or Disk Utility the same errors keep showing up. Trying to go to safe mode to check to see if extensions are an issue doesn't work because mouse and keyboard do not respond so I can't log in. Any suggestions?

  • Right click button on magic mouse stopped working

My magic mouse right click has suddenly stopped working. I have looked at the system preferences, and they are set correctly. I disconnected and reconnected it as well. The other thread suggested remove files that don't exist on this version of the OS.

Yep, have reset PRAM and SMC. Same issue.
It's actually fairly common - I've found at least 15 topics on this forum about it and a bit of Googleing revealed it wasn't just me. Can't find any topics that have a proper resolution though.
I did a fair bit of research before posting on here because I didn't want to post a problem that was specific to just me. It seems like it's a fair few people.
One "solution" is to install a 3rd party piece of software and assign right click to a right "tap" (not a full click) - that's not really a solution, more of a workaround.

  • Magic Mouse stopped scrolling in version 10.6.8

Hi, my mini mac which is a good 5 years old now has been working without problem over that period.
Recently, for now apparent reason the Magic Mouse has stopped scrolling/swiping - all other functions are OK, including right click.
When I go to mouse preferences I only see basic configuration options.  Not those that were there for the Magic Mouse.
I have read a reasonable amount on this topic and do not have the USBOverdrive software installed or any other peripheral software.  rebooted on several occassions with no joy.
I'd appreciate any help that can be offerred.
    Thank you

    Hi all,
Problem solved: After checking with a second computer, recent iMac also with SL, and a new Macbook Pro with Lion in an Apple store, it was proven that in my case it was a hardware problem of the mouse, and not a communication or software problem. Weird indeed, as no moving part was involved. The mouse was just one year old, but I received a new one free of charge at the the Apple dealer.

  • Magic mouse stopped scrolling after system update

Does anyone know why the mouse would stop scrolling after latest OS X update?
    Currently using V 10.8.5

    Hello Kaulfurst,
While the article states that it is for Lion, this applies for Mountain Lion, as well. You may need to check that scrolling is enabled in the Accessibility pane of System Preferences.

  • Magic Mouse Stops Clicking Momentarily

Magic Mouse with new MBP and Thunderbolt display.  Frequently thoughout the day clicking and scroll will stop functioning.  The cursor will move just fine.  If I wait about 5 seconds or so, it will start working.  If I don't want to wait, I can usually hit an arrow key on the keyboard or other key and it will start working again.
This seems to only happen when using the external Thunderbolt Display, but I use it with MBP lid closed.   Its almost as if it loses focus.  Also I think related, when my screen is locked (again with MBP lid closed)... I don't get screen saver on the External display, just black.  When I come back, I won't be able to see the login box, I have to move the mouse... then type my password all in the blind.  Once password is in, the screen come back on the Thunderbolt External.  None of this happens with just using the MBP without external display.
Maybe I should also post to the Display section.  All firmware etc. is up to date.  Tried the PRAM reset etc.

What happens if you use it without the MB having the lid closed?

  • Magic mouse stops tracking, Magic mouse stops tracking

    Hi all
I have bought my magic mouse last year (it is about 1 year and 1 month so no replacement) now all of the mouse functionalities are working perfectly BUT the most important thing the tracking has stopped.
I have tried batteries other Mac and still nothing i have downlowsed a bluetooth analysis utility and it states that everything is just great but still no track of the mouse.
Thanks for all of your help.

Here is the Apple document that may help you ....
Troubleshooting wireless mouse and keyboard issues
Take particular note about distance from computer, interfering electrical apparatus and battery condition.   Check the green indicator light on your mouse.  Is it on, flickering or steady.   Here are a few notes I have written about batteries ....
Whether you use regular or rechargeable batteries you should buy the best. Discounted or unbranded batteries are more likely to give a depleted performance and may be of irregular size, often leading to connection problems.   Apple’s own brand, Eneloop and Energiser appear to be the best.
Rechargeable batteries for the standard Magic mouse are unlikely to exceed eighteen days before needing a recharge although the mouse itself can be a limiting factor.   I have seen reports that some Logitech mice vastly exceed this.    Apple may suggest more in their sales blurb but this is a realistic expectation.   The benefit (if you are organised) is that you can always have charged batteries available.   Regular batteries will give you between 25 and 35 days before they need to be replaced.
Note.  Never mix old and new batteries or rechargeable and regular.
The notes above are based on my personal experience, not shutting down my machine and using it for around four hours per day.   Note.   Monitors do not always faithfully report battery strength, particularly the rechargeable ones.
When checking your mouse or keyboard batteries ...
    Turn off the device.
    Remove the batteries,
Clean the terminals both inside the battery compartment and the batteries themselves.
    Replace or renew both batteries.
Turn on the device.   You should get a blinking green light if the device is paired.
Click the mouse to activate it.  The green light becomes steady.
