Magic mouse suddenly eating batteries

I've had my iMac and magic mouse setup for a few years and the battery life on the mouse has always been decent (I replace the rechargeables every few weeks). Suddenly in the last few days though, the mouse has started eating a set of batteries every 2 days. Any ideas why this might be happening? I haven't changed anything re: my setup, OS, etc.

Rather than the mouse, it's more likely the batteries are exhausted.  Rechargeable batteries are not exactly consistent in themselves or compared with other, similar batteries.   Here are some notes I made about batteries which may help.
Whether you use regular or rechargeable batteries you should buy the best. Discounted or unbranded batteries are more likely to give a depleted performance and may be of irregular size, often leading to connection problems. Apple’s own brand, Eneloop and Energiser appear to be the best.
Rechargeable batteries for the standard Magic mouse are unlikely to exceed eighteen days before needing a recharge although the mouse itself can be a limiting factor.   I have seen reports that some Logitech mice vastly exceed this. Apple may suggest more in their sales blurb but this is a realistic expectation.   The benefit (if you are organised) is that you can always have charged batteries available.   Regular batteries will give you between 25 and 35 days before they need to be replaced.
Note.  Never mix old and new batteries or rechargeable and regular.
The notes above are based on my personal experience, not shutting down my machine and using it for around four hours per day.   Note.   Monitors do not always faithfully report battery strength, particularly the rechargeable ones.
When checking your mouse or keyboard batteries ...
Turn off the device.
Remove the batteries,
Clean the terminals both inside the battery compartment and the batteries themselves.
Replace or renew both batteries.
Turn on the device.   You should get a blinking green light if the device is paired.
Click the mouse to activate it.  The green light becomes steady.

We can't know. You have not told us what exactly the problem is. If there are any warnings, you need to provide them along with other info like the crash logs. If not you have to explain the situation in more detail. Just saying that it doesn't work anymore is not particularly useful.

  • Magic mouse sudden connection loss

My magic mouse loses connection suddenly. I have tried even changing batteries but the problem is not resolved. Please help

Look at the threads in More Like This at the right.
One general theory is that different makes of batteries have slightly different length positive terminals and loose connection.  Some find adding a small shim of aluminum foil to keep the batteries from moving works.  Others just a piece of paper to push down and serve the same purpose.
Others sometimes have problems with interferance.

  • Newbie Magic Mouse question re batteries

    Just a quickie.
Is it absolutely necesssry to switch off the Magic Mouse, using the switch on the base, at night?

There's another thread on this topic but I think it's common for people to only get a month or so of use on the Magic Mouse before you need to change batteries. You might consider buying rechargeable batteries as I think they'll pay for themselves in a year or less. Although there may be a technical fault that accounts for the short battery life, I have wondered in that other thread on this topic if people are actually doing more with the Magic Mouse than they would have on most other wireless mice. Since the entire upper surface is sending a lot of signals to the controller when it's stroked, and we tend to be caressing the surface almost constantly, maybe it's just doing more 'work'. If Apple claims that you can get four months on a battery from this, their testers may not have been using the mouse the way I found myself using it.

  • Magic mouse suddenly acting strange?

My magic mouse stopped functioning normally... single click acts like double click... Text selection tool is wonky; drag select words ends up selecting entire paragraph... could not move objects around in InDesign... can barely move finder and application windows, it lags and move only a short distance... delayed reactions all round. I cannot even move icons around on the desktop…I am using Wacom tablet (usb) right now.
    Changed batteries
Tried to turn bluetooth off and back on; no change.
Tried removing apple and bluetooh related plist's: no change.
Also tried to lower the 'power' setting on my Bell modem default was 4 went down to 3 (whatever that means) also made no difference. I Don’t want to reduce the quality of my internet connection to fix interference on my bluetooth signal (if this is the issue). I even pulled the power plug on my modem no wiFi
... and still, my mouse has gone rogue!
I have read quite a few posts (some go back a few years) with similar issues and have yet to find a solution. Zapping P ram seem a little excessive - any thoughts?
Any solutions? Is it possible, these little magic mice just simply have a short lifespan  : (
The only computer/software changes were done months ago (new internet service & hardware Early Jan) and (Mavericks when it was released last year)
Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Hi seventy one, Thanks again for all your help. I finally got the magic mouse to work properly... After I spent two days reading posts, troubleshooting and finally posting my querie... It came back to the 1st thing i looked at!
    The batteries.
I have been using (the same 4) rechargable AA batteries since the life of the mouse. And even though they showed as 100% charged in the system mouse preferences, the batteries must have weakened over time.
I popped in a fresh set of (off the shelf) Duracells and POW! no more crazy mouse action. I know that Apple has it's own charger & rechargable batteries for its products; so I may look into this. In the meantime, I think it pays to have good quality batteries for something I use (and need) every day.
Im a bit embarrased that I didn't figure this out in the beginning : [
happy that its working again : )

It might be necessary to click the magic mouse to get it to reconnect after changing batteries.
That has always been the case with my 2014 iMac and magic mouse that came with the iMac.

  • Why does my Apple wireless mouse suddenly need batteries changed every week?

I'm getting "running low on batteries" messages regularly now. This never happened before. The mouse is about five years old.

It may be that it is failing.
Battery usage is a function of individual usage. There is no setting that would affect battery usage.

  • Magic Mouse won't scroll or swipe in email window, but works perfectly in Safari window.

My Magic Mouse suddenly won't scroll or swipe in the email window, top or bottom part of the window, but behaves normally in the Safari window.  Replaced the Mouse batteries, 100% power, no difference.  iMac is 2008, pretty old, but was updated to 10.10.3 a month ago.  Bluetooth icon in upper right part of screen indicates Bluetooth is ON, and the Mouse is connected, as evidenced by proper operation in Safari.  No recent upgrades/changes to email that I'm aware of.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

I set up the new iMac with a time machine back up from a much older iMac, has this caused the problem? iCloud drive works perfectly on my macbook pro. Thanks for any advice.
Then check, which MacOS X version your new Mac is running. To be able to use iCloud Drive, the system needs to be Yosemite, MacOS X 10.10.x
To check the system version, click the -menu un the upper left corner of the Display and use the command -About this Mac.
If you are running an earlier system, use upgrade to Yosemite from the App Store.

  • Magic Mouse Unresponsive since battery replacement

So yesterday my Magic Mouse suddenly started losing its connection ("Connection Lost" icon displayed and MM would not move cursor) with annoying frequency.  Its indicator light and laser were lighting up, but I finally had to stop using it. Last night I left the MacBook installing the Magic Mouse software upgrade and the ITunes upgrade.  This morning the first thing on my MacBook was a "Magic Mouse Batteries Critically Low" message.  Hmmm....that must have been why the MM was losing its connection!
Sadly, after replacing the batteries and moving the on-off switch to "on," the indicator light does not light up.  Yes, I've checked to make sure the the + ends of the batteries are in the right place and yes, I've tried a different pair of batteries.  The MM battery compartment cover seems to be latched back into place properly. In the Bluetooth preference pane the MM still shows as "paired" but obviously it is not "connected" and cannot be "found."
The MM is only a couple of months old so this is the first time I have had to replace the batteries.  Did I do something that killed the MM?  Any suggestions to revive it?  Is suddenly starting to lose connection every few minutes a symptom that the MM is on its last legs?

I, too, am having the same issues. Also changed the batteries, twice. Scrolling and clicking works, but cursor refuses to move.

  • I use an iMac (27" 3.4) and have problems with the Magic Mouse. It does not use contact, but opens useless and unrelated submenus with every click, even on the empty desktop. I can't shift, open or close pages. Has anyone out there the same problem?

I use an iMac 27" (mid 2011). Until recently I had OSX 10.6.8 installed, but both, the HDD and SSD had to be replaced, and I lost all the memory.
After the repair through Apple Care I had OSX 10.7.5. (Lion) installed, which developed a Magic Mouse problem.
Unlike with most users, I have no problems with connection, but grapple with a different kind of erratic behaviour.
All fancy stuff is turned off in the mouse preferences. When I try to move, open or close pages, unrelated submenus pop up and hinder the
required task. No matter how often I click, these menus stay there, and they even come up when clicking on the bare desktop.
It renders the mouse absolutely useless, as no work can be done with it.
The first 'Magic Mouse' had depleted batteries every few days, despite switching it off after use.
I was supplied a new Mouse, which does better battery-wise, but the problems are the same. I can't get a result by clicking on any link, due to
the pop-up menus, so both 'Magic Mice' are totally useless.
At present I am using the old USB mouse from my Mac Pro, and that works still o.k.
The problem are not the mice, but the software. The first 2 weeks after installation of OSX 10.7.5 the Magic Mouse worked though.
I have no idea as to what the reason may be.
Has anyone in the community ever experienced that particular problem. Any hint would be welcomed.
    Thank you!

Not using any mouse pad, I have a very smooth desktop. But I just tried to use a sheet of A4 printing paper, but no result, the problem persisted.
Someone on this forum suggested, that USB3 may interfere with the magic mouse.
I have 2 LaCie HDD's about 70 cm away from the mouse, I use them on Thunderbolt. But in operation or not - the result is the same, the mouse plays up! Just now I was clicking the desktop and the mouse created a new folder!!
    Thanks for the advice, Bee
    Cheers, Gerd

  • Magic Mouse Disconnecting After every computer close

Every time I close my laptop screen, even without restarting or shutting down the computer, the Magic Mouse is no longer working when I open up the laptop screen again. It wasn't doing this until I replaced the batteries when the batteries that were packaged with ran out of battery life. I have to turn the little button on and off and then go to Mouse and have it reconnect each time. I even changed it to a favorite, and that didn't help. What is going on?

My problem was quite different, but perhaps this will help you under different conditions and its worth a try, nonetheless.
I found that cleaning the battery contacts of both the magic mouse and the batteries themselves has eliminated my disconnect problems. I used a pencil eraser and rubbed the contacts with the eraser, then blew the crumbs out with canned air. Before doing this, I rubbed the pencil eraser on paper to get fresh, clean rubber.

  • Magic mouse not clicking

My magic mouse suddenly stopped being able to click on my iMac. It pairs via Bluetooth, the cursor moves, the icons in the Dock respond when the cursor moves over them, but nothing happens when the mouse is clicked. I took it to the Apple store nearby and it worked fine on the technician's laptop so it's an issue with the iMac I assume. I upgraded to Yosemite hoping it would solve the issue but it did not. I've zapped the PRAM and still no clicking.
My next step is to remove system files that relate to the Magic Mouse but I'm not sure which ones to trash...any guidance here?
    Thanks in advance.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
If it's under warranty you can either bring it to an AASP or call AppleCare at 800-275-2273. You don't need to bring it into a store if you don't have one in your area.

  • Magic Mouse Won't reconnect

I've had this new magic mouse for less than a week. It worked fine until today. I've been turning off the mouse at night. When I woke my computer today, the mouse wouldn't connect. I also tried using my mighty mouse to delete from the Bluetooth preference pain and start the process over. It didn't work.

Can you tell if Bluetooth is working and devices discoverable (by looking at the Bluetooth icon in the right of the menu bar)? If so, just a guess, but try:
    - turning off the Magic mouse,
    - removing the batteries,
    - if possible test their strength, if standard batteries, they should be 1.5V
    - reinserting the batteries,
    - turning on the mouse,
    - clicking the mouse a few times.
If this fails and your Mighty mouse and keyboard is working, try to reset PRAM.

  • Magic Mouse tracking poorly and losing Bluetooth connectivity since Mountain Lion upgrade

Since upgrading to Mountain Lion I have experienced frequent and inconsistant tracking from my Magic Mouse. It will work fine and then out of no where, and without any connection to a particular app or process (that I can identify) it will begin stop moving or move in a very jittery fashion. I'm also experiencing Bluetooth connection loss with the mouse from time to time out of nowhere. I cleaned the mouse and even went to so far as to replace it with another, brand new Magic Mouse and have seen the same problem.
I have also tried resetting PRAM and SMC.
Anyone else experiencing this or a similar issue? Have any suggestions of things to try?
    Mac Pro (Early 2008)
    Processor  2 x 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    Memory  26 GB 800 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM
Graphics  ATI Radeon HD 5870 1024 MB
    Software  OS X 10.8 (12A269)

Well , regarding of this issue i did some tests and i've reached to some conclusions to fix it.
    Steps
    1. turn off the magic mouse
    2. remove batteries
    3. put everything back and power on.
    4. pair your mouse again if you remove it from the tab
    5. leave the option discoverable marked down
    6. add to favorite from bluetooth menu (you will see a red heart with yes )
    7. should work for now
Test 1 : Mac mini 2010 with OSX Lion 10.7.4
Test 2 : MBA 2012 with OSX Mountain Lion 10.8.1
Conclusion : still have a bug not showing the right battery level (only 100%)but if you use "iStat" widget you will see the real level.
Magic mouse doesn't have, unfortunatelly the multipoint technology so if you use on multiple cpu in the same area can create instability (leave only one of a time and remove it from the bluetooth tab on other cpu)
I belive its working only using step 6, but to be sure
