Magic Moves not always Magic (non-linear slide orders)

Magic Moves opens the possibility of non-linear slide orders with animated transitions. Previously in keynote (KN '08), as far as I could ascertain, this was impossible. Now a slide with several hyper-linked objects can enjoy an animation of the on screen objects to there new positions, where-ever they may be on the on the linked slides.
Unfortunately, as in some other things Keynote, it seems flakey. While it works most of the time for some reason, even when duplicating the linking slide and repositioning the very same objects, the Move is delayed and instantaneous: decidedly not Magic!
The joy of being able to finally make the fully interactive Keynote presentation that will slide objects the right amount automatically according to there destination slide seems possible. The great thing is I don't have to construct all the different moves linking 26 different pages to each other via various routes (8 links on each page, which happened to be 8x26 possible linking routes = 208 move builds: too much for prescriptive build/move animations).
But if I can't get it too work 100% I can't really show my client. Any know issues with this Magic Move stuff?
I can replicate problem but not predict when it won't work or decode what is triggering the problem. Searching forum only revealed comment the Magic Move is work in progress. Note I am not scaling any objects. Can upload if it helps. Part of the original Presentation with a linear narrative can be seen at:
http://www.vimeo.com/3018559
Essentially I am endeavouring to make all the images 'clickable' so the film strip glides (against the preset order) to become the centre project. Also like to add a left and right button. All this can be theoretically done with invisible rect's with hyperlinks and Magic moves on each slide.
Thanks for reading though all this – hope it's clearer than mud.

Thanks for the response, Kyn.
As it happens writing that long explanation, I thought I'd look from another angle and returned to the file – finding the answer straight away.
Conclusion:
Hyperlinks never use Magic Move transition, even if it is selected transition for the slide. I was getting hoodwinked by the fact that when I had forward and back arrows with hyperlinks to other slides, those slides were before and after the current slide. So they were Magic Moving with a mouse click on the Hyperlink, but only when forward one slide or backward one slide. Any other linking distance failed to Magic Move.
I've already made the feature request but *please second it*, this would be a very powerful feature. Think Non-Linear Presentations and Info Kiosks with seamless transitions. And interaction is an area Powerpoint has decided edge on Keynote so it can and needs to be closed! (PP is such a trial of an interface after KN).

  • Magic Move not scaling text

Hi - despite assurances from the manual and the help files, I cannot get Magic Move to scale and move a text box - it just dissolves instead. This from a single slide with nothing else on it, duplicated and then the text moved and resized.
    Any ideas?

Using Grab or any other screen grab application will indeed copy the background color behind the text. In some cases that won't matter, but if you have a gradient background color or something more complex than a solid color, it could be an issue. Also, if you have another object behind the grabbed text, the background will also be visible. Instant Alpha can help, but we can detect flaws in text more than in other graphics, so the results may be disappointing.
If you do use the screen grab method, if backgrounds are not a problem, and your text is being scaled up, then use this technique with the text created in Keynote in its largest size, and then copy and paste accordingly across the Magic Move transition. Since you are creating bitmapped images, text will look a bit chunky if scaled up too large, but scaling down will look fine. Keep in mind you can "reverse engineer" a Magic Move (i.e. create an object in the second slide, copy and paste it into the first, scale down, etc.).
Or you can avoid all this work and just created the vector-based text from another app, as I outlined in my previous post. All issues of backgrounds and text scaling are eliminated.

  • Magic move not working randomly

I am trying to use magic move and have followed all the instructions posted online. I duplicated a slide and moved the objects. Some objects move fine but one arrow is living in its own world probably. !! None of the objects have been grouped and they are the exact same size and dimensions. Tried cpying the arrow as well. Still din't work. help please.. !!

First, ensure you are using the latest version (6.1).
Some users have reported issues with the arrow shape, but magic move and the arrow is working as it should with most users.
If you are using 6.1, delete it and reinstall from the Mac App Store.

  • Magic Move not working

    Hi
I have an image of a plane that I would like to move and resize from slide 1 to slide 2, first I removed the plane's background using the Alpha tool, then I had it to move from left to right in slide one (with no move out), then I duplicated the whole slide, removed everything except the plane, resized it, moved it to the lower left, and choose the transition for the first slide (Magic Move). When I play, everything goes right until the time the plane should resize and move, instead is fades, then the new plane moves in from left to right!
    Any Help Please?

  • Magic Movie not working?

I have a new Sony DCR-HC38. My iMac recognizes it, and when I try to make a Magic Movie, it rewinds the camera.... then... nothing...
    What am I missing?
(I did load clips in manually.)

    Hi
So You did load in clips manually ? Then the Camera is OK and the FW-cable.
Can it be so that iMovie thinks it's to little free space to store Your project ?
    - free space on internal hard disk ?
    - any external hard disk ? USB/USB2 or FW and formatted as Mac OS Extended ?
Something to test is to discard the iMovie pref file so that any error in this one
will be replaced with a new fresh error free one:
    iMovie
    -->/Users/YourName**/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iMovie.plist
    and
    -->/Users/YourName**/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iMovie3.plist

  • Magic Mouse not so Magic

Is anyone experiencing erratic behaviour from their "Magic Mouse". I find mine is VERY sensitive and over-responds to the slightest touch. Sometimes just grazing the surface accidentally causes my document to skip through pages in a blur. Is this a malfunction (correctible) or is this normal for these infernal things.

I did not have any problems installing the new mouse driver and getting it to work, mostly by dumb luck AKA read the instructions last. Everything seems to work except the two finger scrolling through iPhoto and the rotating photos. Any ideas how to get that working or do you need a newer version of iPhoto?
In the pictures on the Apple site, I noticed that the thumbnails in iPhoto were on the right. I could not find a way of doing that with iPhoto 6. Is that another feature that only comes with the newer versions?
Like some of the other commenters, I would like to see more functionality, like a two finger click or tap on the mouse to activate an additional selectable feature.

  • Itunes HD Movies not compatible on non-HDCP displays, should automatically play in SD mode.

Why don't itunes HD movies play in SD when a monitor is not compatible instead of just throwing out an error message about the computer must have a built in display or it must be connected to a display that supports HDCP. I've bought many itunes movies in HD which work on my IPAD, but they won't work on my Windows 7 desktop monitor due to the error message given. We pay itunes lots of money for movies (more for HD), so itunes should have something in place to allow for HD movies to be viewed in SD when the situation dictates. I might be purchasing a new monitor soon with HDCP, but that shouldn't be the solution.

    Reply to myself.....
I found that Amazon have addressed this issue as they state with regards to non-HDCP issues........
If you've purchased HD content, but your device, connectors, or setup don't meet content protection requirements, we'll deliver that video in Standard Definition (SD) and let you know you're receiving the SD version instead of the HD version.
Pity Apple couldn't do what Amazon do!!!

  • What's the secret to magic move

I've been using Keynote for years and have yet to fully understand how to dependably get magic move to do what I want. At times it feels like there's no rhyme or reason. One moment a transition is working and the next it's unrepeatable.
Has anyone found a detailed magic move tutorial that explains the magic?
Or perhaps you might have some specific tips that will clear things up?
    Thanks!

From page 107 of the Keynote User Guide:
Tips for Creating a Magic Move Transition
Magic Move doesn’t work with tables, charts, or movies.
For best results with a Magic Move transition, duplicate the slide and apply the Magic Move transition between the original and the duplicate.
To set up a Magic Move transition:
1 Create a slide and place the objects (text, shapes, images) where you want them.
2 Select the slide in the Slide Navigator and press Command-D to duplicate the slide.
3 On the copy of the slide, reposition and resize some or all of the text, shapes, and images on the slide.
4 Add any additional text or graphics you want to add to the copied slide, and delete any objects you don’t want on it.
5 Select the first slide of the pair and apply the Magic Move transition.
That being said, there are a lot of little tricks. For example, you can usually group objects to exclude them from Magic Move matching, and if you have an object that isn't matching between slides, usually deleting it from the second, copying it from the first, then pasting it onto the second will match them.
Do you have specific examples of Magic Move not doing what you want it to? If so, we might be able to help you out.
(And if you want Apple to know about it and hopefully fix it in the next release, you could tell them what isn't working for you via their feedback form, or—to be ESPECIALLY helpful—file a bug at http://bugreporter.apple.com and attach the misbehaving Keynote decks to those bugs.)

  • Magic Move causing problems with scaled animation

I have a presentation that uses the Magic Move transition between slides. The Magic Move only effects a solid rectangle at the top of the slide which moves to the bottom of the next slide. The Magic Move transition works great except it causes a rescaling of an object on the slide that has been scaled using the scale animation. There are slides where I animate text to move and scale to a larger percentage.
The text animation moves and scales perfectly. When the slide is about to preform the Magic Move transition (advancing to the next slide) the object that was scaled by animation scales back to its original size. Then the presentation advanced to the next slide.
I've reproduced this on two other computers with 'start from scratch' presentations to test. It occurs with any object - text, shape, etc.  Can someone else verify that this is a bug or not?
    OSX 10.9.4
    Keynote 6.2.2 (1878)
    Keynote 6.2 (1861)
    MacPro
    MacBookPro
    Thanks.

    UPDATE.
Just tested my issue in Keynote version 6.0 and there were no issues. Scaled animated objects and text combined with the Magic Move transition will not result in a the scaled object reverting back to it's original size during the slide transition.
I still would like verification from another user that you can repeat my problem in version 6.2. Although I'm 80% sure this is a bug I have found, until someone else can confirm my issue i'll hold off on that conclusion.

  • GPO's not always applying

We have a Windows 2008 AD environment with Window 7 clients.  Just recently we have noticed that some GPO’s are not always applying to our clients.  For testing purposes I created a test OU and GPO (adding a printer).  I find that the GPO
usually applies upon login for local admin users but  not always of non-admin accounts. If I unlink the test GPO, again the outcome is sporadic.  When running gpresult from my clients it ALWAYS displays the correct GPO’s being applied.  Any
    help is greatly appreciated.

How are you deploying the printer? If you are using Preferences, check the Application log for printer errors.

  • Non-linear ODE

    Hello everybody,
Does anybody know if non-linear second order ODE can be solved with the Runge-Kutta solver. This appears to be the most common solver.
I am trying to solve a non-linear second order differential equation of the form x*x’’ +x’^2 =Const. I was looking for an example that I could use to start with and follow it. I found one called “SHOOTING METHOD”.
    for f(x(t),y(t),y) I used (1/x)*(-y*y+Const)
Originally, I used x(0) =0.01 and x(1) = 0.01 for my boundary conditions but the solution just increases linearly with time as opposed to reaching a maximum and decreasing back to zero in time.
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
    Roberto

A shooting method reformulates the BVP as an optimization of the initial conditions of IVP.  In your 2nd order ODE that means that the initial conditions are y(0) and y'(0), and the specified boundary conditions are y(0) and y(1).  The first initial condition is just the first boundary condition, but y'(0) must be determined to produce y(1).  I wrote a VI that sweeps over a series of y'(0) values, solves the ODE for each set of initial conditions, and graphs y(1)-desired_boundary.  If y(1)-desired_boundary=0 then the initial conditions exactly produces the desired boundary conditions.  Please see 'sweep rhs1.vi' in the attached archive.  Run using the defaults.  Once the zero is bracketed then an automatic root finder may be employed to solve for the initial condition with more precision.  The zero-finder must have a bracketed interval (change in sign of the function around the desired level).  See optimize rhs1.vi for an example using a Newton-Raphson zero finder to solve for the y'(0)initial condition.
Please note that the Newton-Raphson is a 1-D implementation only.

  • Magic Mouse non-linear movement

    Hi,
I have an Apple Magic Mouse that came with my new Mac Pro. The mouse movement is highly non-linear with speed: the faster you move the mouse, the further the pointer moves. I find it difficult and frustrating to control the pointer with this type behavior.
There used to be an option to move with or without "acceleration", but I can't find it.
Is there a way to disable this "acceleration"?
    Thanks!

I have been changing settings, changing mice, and trying to get used to it. It's not going to happen. For me, the pointer movement is too slow at the slow end and too fast at the fast end. Doesn't matter where I move the "Tracking Speed" slider, movement is sluggish then ridiculous. I need a "Acceleration" slider, or a checkbox to turn off acceleration all together.
I downloaded Tinker Tool, but there's nothing in there to modify mouse acceleration. Does anybody know of another third party utility that does allow user settings for mouse acceleration?
    Thanks.

  • Keynote: magic move: How do I make it add a 3rd slide?

    Hi,
I made a 2 slide Magic Move transition that seemed to work ok, then I added a 3rd, checked all 3, used the Change button and assumed this would work. But it  just won't accept that 3rd slide no matter what I do. Any suggestions?

Magic Move doesn’t work with tables, charts, or movies.
Select the second slide in the Slide Navigator and press Command-D to duplicate the slide
On the duplicate slide, reposition text, shapes, or images on the slide.
Select the second slide  and apply the Magic Move

  • Magic Movie from file not camera

Is there anyway to make a Magic Movie from a file already on the computer?
Every time I try it wants to read it from the tape on a camcorder.

    Hi e
To get it straight in - I doubt it.
    Way around:
    • Figure out how to get it into iMovie - may be by converting to streamingDV and import
    • Copy back to Camera and a new miniDV tape
∆ Use this with MagicMovie. Probably You have to put in transitions manually by doing it this way

  • Magic Move and Charts

I was watching the video of todays WWDC keynote and at one point Phil Schiller was showing a graph that smoothly changed vertical size and scale when transitioning between one slide and another. He then said (I am paraphrasing) "Magic Move in Keynote".
I went right to my Keynote '09 and have spent the last 45 minutes trying to get Keynote to do such a smooth Magic Move transition. Started with a scatter chart. Generated on a page, copied and pasted in the next and just shrunk the vertical size. No smooth transition. I removed the legend from both. Same no go. Tried it with 4 other chart types and in none did Magic Move smoothly transition a chart from one page into another where the size was changed.
Has anyone else done this? Look at the WWDC video - it happens with Phil's first part of the presentation showing numbers of OsX users. Can anyone duplicate this with a chart???

I think so. There is no other way. As I said it's not perfect. Magic Move makes the animation dependent from the objects being at front and at back. To make it perfect, you need to care about that. As this would REALLY take time I didn't do so. But I think Apple does have employees for that
You can do the diagram with keynote, then remove all gridlines etc. copy it and paste it into Photoshop as a Vector smart object. Then save it as a .psd file and put it back into keynote....
