Magic trackpad cursor position trouble

I'm finding that quite often after I position the cursor in a text field (like, say, anywhere in a text editor like TextWrangler or in xcode, or in the URL field of a browser, and then I start typing, the characters appear at the previous cursor position. If I stop typing to figure out what just happened, the cursor is still in the right position, and if I continue typing the text will appear in the right place, but the text I just typed is in the wrong place.
Anyone else?

I have the same issue, but my mouse is turned off. I put the pad off to the side just to make sure. I just tried removing my mouse from the Bluetooth preferences. I've never had trouble with the mouse jumping before, but I do with the Magic Trackpad.

Magic Trackpad Cursor Jumps or Moves Without the Trackpad Being Touched.
Try turning off your Bluetooth mouse or other nearby devices, especially if you find the cursor on your screen jumps or moves without the trackpad being touched. The cursor may also act strangely when the trackpad is touched.
The closest I found to a solution was in an old support article from March 2009 (TS1449), but it was through pure luck and MacGuyverism that I figured out my wireless Mighty Mouse was still on, nearby and thought it might be interfering with the signal to/from the Magic Trackpad. Sure enough. Turned it off and the problem instantly went away! Turned it on and the problem came back. Not sure if more distance would make a difference, but I saw no need for both on my desk anyway.

  • Magic Trackpad able to move cursor with finger movements, will not respond to selecting or tapping an item

    Hello,
I have a Magic Trackpad that I'm trying to get to work on a Mac Mini OSX 10.6.8.  I should note I recently purchased the trackpad second hand and not been ever able to have it fully functioning.  The trackpad connects to the mini with no issue and I am able to move the cursor in any direction with no problem.  I can not however get this trackpad to select an item or otherwise open anything.  It seems it is unresponsive to either me pressing my finger down or tapping the trackpad to select something.
Do I just have a boken trackpad?  Or am I doing something wrong/need a configuration change?  I have a magic mouse that works without issue, but this trackpad is giving me fits!

You have to press hard enough to make the feet at the front corners click, or you can enable Tap-to-Click in the Trackpad system preference.

In System Preferences > Trackpad > your preferences should look like this screenshot.  If they don't then some 3rd party driver is conflicting.  The most common conflict is USBoverdrive.

  • Change Magic Trackpad move cursor, select functions

I just got a Magic Trackpad for my iMac and it's great but... it's too sensitive to my admittedly heady-handed use. Can I separate the single-finger cursor movement function from the "touch and click" selection function so I can move the cursor but need a specific (two-finger?) touch/tap for selection?

Press down on the trackpad until it clicks.
Nope, the magic trackpad doesn't do this. That's the problem.
Huh, how odd. Mine does. Did Apple change the Magic Trackpad since I bought mine? Or maybe yours is defective?
The press-down-till-click is also used in either the left or right bottom corner to activate a right-click. Chosen in the trackpad preferences. Though I've gotten used to the two-finger tap for that instead.

  • Cursor freezes soon after waking from sleep, Magic Trackpad

I have a mid-2011 21.5" iMac with a Magic Trackpad. Cursor sometimes freezes within a few minutes of waking from sleep. Sometimes it happens several times a day, sometimes I've gone almost a week without it happening. Keyboard continues to work but trackpad is non-responsive. To get it working again I go to Spotlight using the keyboard and search Bluetooth, arrow down to Bluetooth System Preferences in the Spotlight results. After a little while the cursor starts working again.
When it happens this appears in the Console:

This is what I've tried over the past six months: I have tried 3 pairs of Apple recharger batteries (same batteries work fine in keyboard) and a new pair of Energizer batteries, I have tried resetting PRAM and SMC. Three clean installs of Mavericks: First clean install I restored from Time Machine backup. Second clean install I did Migration Assistant from SuperDuper backup. Third time I created new user and did manual drag and drop from backup of user files and manually reinstall apps. I did not move over my fonts in case there were any corrupt ones, so the only fonts I have came with Mavericks. I have a new trackpad courtesy of AppleCare, as well as a new Bluetooth board. I have tried trashing the Bluetooth prefs, removing the trackpad from the Bluetooth list and pairing again. I have seached for solutions in the discussions as well as other sites.
If anyone has any suggestions I would really appreciate it.

I had the same problem. I have found a work around - sort of. I have unchecked the option to "Allow Bluetooth devices to wake this computer" (System Preferences / Bluetooth / Advanced). I no longer have the problem. Having to wake the computer another way (I have a USB wireless mouse so no problem for me) and waiting a second or two for the bluetooth devices to connect is less annoying than continually losing trackpad connection. I hope that helps you too.

  • How do you select multiple words using a Magic Trackpad?

I know how to select multiple words with my mouse, but cannot figure out how to do it using my new Magic Trackpad. Here's the deal:
Let's say you want to select "cannot figure out how to" in the sentence above. With my mouse, I'd place the cursor somewhere over the word "cannot," double-left-click and keep holding the button down. Then, dragging to the right, it would select each word in its entirety as I moved along the sentence. I do this all the time since it is a very quick way to select text.
Okay, so how do you do this with the Magic Trackpad?
I try a similar behavior, but it doesn't work. If I double-tap on "cannot," for example, one of two things happens. Either only the word "cannot" is highlighted and dragging does nothing to highlight more text. Or, if I'm quicker with the drag (aka swipe) right, it will select one character at a time starting from the cursor position when I double-tapped and not entire words, as I want.
    I'm stumped. Anyone?

    Jeffrey,
The only good way seems to be by using the physical click on the Trackpad. Double physical click then drag. Much the way it's done on the mouse.
    Regards
    Captfred

Magic Mouse cursor will not move.  Scroll works. right click works replaced batteries

I'm so sorry but I overlooked your response in the previous post.
    I think you there are two options to try.     One;
Reset the SMC (Systems management control)      https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT201295 ....
Two: You may have a problem with interference which could be from a TV set, particularly one of the new smart TVs, anything electronic you've either moved into the room or changed its position.   That could include another mouse or trackpad.
    Again, sorry.

  • Using trackpad, cursor 'jumps'. Any ideas?

My wife kindly bought me a Trackpad for my birthday last month and it was really enjoyable to use. After a short while I turned off my Magic Mouse and just uaed the TP. However, I quickly came across a problem inasmuch as when I was typing, and especially when back-spacing, the cursor often jumped to a different line or somewhere else altogether, whoch was quite alarming. I took the TP to Solutions in Chichester, where it came from, and they were outstanding, giving me an immediate replacement. I've tried it out and all went well for some minutes, then it happened again. Any ideas on what I should/could do next?

This is a common problem, and you will find many "solutions" by searching the Magic Mouse and TrackPad section of Apple Support Communities. Judging from the reports, some of them work, some of the time, for some people.
The solution that worked for me is to make sure that no cables are positioned between my Magic Trackpad and my Mac Pro. My Mac Pro is under my desk and my Magic Trackpad is on a pull-out wooden keyboard shelf just above it. I first discovered that when I temporarily moved my Magic Trackpad down onto the floor near the Mac Pro, the jumpiness completely disappeared. So then I moved it back up to the shelf and the jumpiness returned. Finally, I realized that two cables were hanging in front of the Mac Pro in a direct path between the shelf and the Mac Pro (I don't worry about the wooden shelf, because the documentation says wood does not seriously interfere with Bluetooth). As soon as I moved the cables out of the path, the jumpiness again disappeared. Both cables were USB cables connected to other peripherals using the USB ports on the front of the Mac Pro.
In the two weeks since I moved the cables, the jumpiness is almost completely gone. I still get a little occasional jumpiness, but only for a very brief moment when I first start using the Magic Trackpad after a long pause.
In a similar vein, I believe it might be useful to consider whether you have other Bluetooth devices near your Magic Trackpad that might be interfering with the signal. If so, try moving them, or temporarily removing them, to see if the jumpiness goes away.

  • After pairing in Bootcamp, magic trackpad does not work

after pairing in Bootcamp, magic trackpad a) does not control cursor and b) does not persist after closing Bluetooth devides dialog.
    Summary of Problem:
Magic Trackpad is found and paired, but does not control the mouse.
When you shut the Bluetooth devices and reopen (or reboot and reopen), the device is not listed.
    Detials of problem:
Bootcamp 3.1 (i cannot find a later one) Windows XP all updates, All Apple Software Updates (to bootcamp and mac os x) installed, Magic Trackpad driver download and installed.
Control Panel, Bluetooth Devices, Add - it detectes the magic track pad (ie track pad blinking, click add) everytime
    - It asks about a pass code, I have tried it without a pass code and with automatically Generate Passcode; does this setting matter?
In bluetooth devides, the track pad shows with "Auto Generated passkey" when that is the option selected
Found new hardware comes up, Apple Wireless Trackpad, everything looks fine.
    - In Bluetooth Devices, it shows the trackpad wiht "no passkey", even when I told it to automatically generate one.
The track pad does not control the cursor.
Close Bluetooth Devices and reopen it, or reboot and reopen Bluetooth devices, and the track pad is gone.
Rebooting does not change the outcome of above.
I have gone to device manager and tried to update the two (apple & microsoft) Bluetooth drivers with the update button, it says I have the most current.
I do not see how to tell if the Magic Trackpad driver is installed, so I tried installing it again. It does appear to be listed under HID in device manager.
I have done a lot of googling, wasted a lot of time, if I cannot get it to work, I will return it to the apple store.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!
    bob

Bob, cannot help directly but I am having a similar problem on my MacBook Pro with Windows 7 Pro. Pretty much the same symptoms except my trackpad is not always recognized - it seems I have to click it to get Bluetooth to see it. Windows claims to have seen it OK on one occasion and installed the drivers, asked for a reboot etc. but the TrackPad still does not respond.
Works OK on the Mac side although it is not recognized as a separate Bluetooth trackpad which can be configured differently from the built-in. I wonder if this might be a clue?
I have installed the patch and tried a bunch of other things. Seems like Apple has some work to do sorting out the bugs on both the Mac and Windows side with this device. Pity because its an excellent piece of kit otherwise!

  • Problem with Magic TrackPad and Macbook Pro

I just bought the Apple Wireless Keyboard and Apple Magic TrackPad for my home desktop setup. I connect my Macbook Pro 13" (from august 2010) to a Dell U2410 screen.
Everything works perfectly for a while, but then the cursor starts jumping around on the screen when I use the Magic TrackPad. Now here comes the weird thing, if I open the lid on the Macbook just a few inches the jumping stops completely and the Magic TrackPad works perfectly again.
I have tried googling a bit and browsed these forums also - no luck finding a solution.
I have also tried connecting a USB mouse to the Macbook when the cursor started to jump around - no problem with the USB mouse. I have also tried a different Magic TrackPad that my friend also just have bought for his setup - same problem after a short time.
Everything is updated to the latest software and firmware.
Thank you in advance for your help.

I have the same problem with a Trackpad paired with a new Mac Mini just purchased in September. After a while, my trackpad also starts to exhibit behavior similar to those described by Hecro. The trackpad cursor feels frozen, or else it jumps around, often trying to stay away from or jump over any hyperlink in either text or graphic form on the page I am viewing.
I find that if I pick up the trackpad and hold it above my palm between my thumb on one side and my fingers on the other side — so there is no pressure on the clicking feet on the bottom of the trackpad — a "jumping" trackpad instantly becomes a "stable" trackpad. Put it back down on a surface and it starts jumping again.
Also, when it starts jumping or skipping, I also find that if I use one finger and bear down hard on the trackpad, it resumes being responsive.
I am filing a comment about this on Apple's feedback forum at www.apple.com/feedback at the advice of a Genius at the Apple Store at Cambridgeside in Cambridge, Massachusetts USA.

  • Magic Trackpad won't work with Magic Mouse on brand new 2011 27" i5 iMac

I have a brand new 2011 27" i5 iMac which I bought with Snow Leopard pre-loaded. Naturally, I included the new Magic Trackpad in my purchase, and though there were some problems with the device in SL - such as it going haywire without explanation - it generally worked, although battery levels were erratic (one day 80%, then an hour later 42%, then 80% again).
When I installed Lion I did a clean install after backing up to Time Machine - and a Super Dupered external drive. I had some difficulties trying to install Lion from an external flash drive so I deleted again and reinstalled SL, then reinstalled over the SL install I did (with no other software except Mac OS X 10.6.8 and other system updates to facilitate install). Rather than copying apps from my old SL drive, I downloaded fresh copies and reinstalled one by one. I don't use a lot of apps apart from Microsoft Office, browsers and iLife and have not installed any additional scripts, extensions or add-ons (like USB Overdrive). It's a pretty clean install.
Since then, although I'm generally happy with Lion, the Magic Trackpad won't work! It does work for a little while with basic gestures - mainly moving the cursor and scrolling - then it gives up the ghost and loses connectivity. I have done the following:
Disconnected and reconnected the MTP after turning it on and off. MTP works for about two minutes, goes crazy then no response.
Shut the computer down, pulled out the plug, waited two minutes, then started up again. MTP works for about two minutes, goes crazy then no response.
Run Onyx, shut down computer, then pulled out plug (see above).
Checked options in Universal Access, shut off "Ignore other devices when trackpad in use" (or whatever the option is). MTP works for about two minutes, goes crazy then no response.
Turned off the Magic Mouse. MTP works for about two minutes, goes crazy then no response.
But none of this seems to work! I know the MTP is connected because I can see it in the BT menu in the menu bar and also in System Preferences. I have noticed since upgrading that my permissions - which when I bought the computer were totally clean - now run lines and lines about "Library/Core Services" so I am unsure whether this is related. I also notice a lot of people are in the same boat as me, which makes me wonder if it's either a hardware issue or a release issue - after a week or so of totally silent running, my 2TB Hitachi HDD started up with the grumbly tum. I'd really appreciate any tips from anyone out there!

    Hi, marksaner
You could try installing the latest version of the Synaptics driver. Synaptics is the company that makes the UltraNav driver and drivers for many other computer brands. This driver should have the same functionality as the UltraNav driver, so there's no worry there. You can find the driver here.
    Hope it helps,

i had lost the grey, round shaped rubber placed under my magic trackpad. i think it detached from the trackpad body and lost. where can i get this small spare part as i couldn't find this small spare part in apple store?

Wish I could be more positive but as far as I can see, the solution is to make something for yourself and tape it on.  It appears they do not supply a proper replacement and Ifixit, the usual people say they don't have them.
Here is a company that supply rubber feet.   It may be worth contacting them and asking if they have something that will do the job.

  • Problem editing Word docs with Magic Trackpad

Hi--I'm a playwright working in Word. I recently purchased a magic trackpad. I'm having a tough time selecting text for cutting, copying, etc. I'll want to select a word or two but wind up getting the whole paragraph, an incomplete chunk, or nothing it all. It's frustrating because I'm used to moving fast. How can I make it behave like the good trackpad in my MacBook Pro? And where can I get a good explaination of the I-beam cursor. Different parts of it seem to do different things.
