Magic Trackpad stuck on selected text

The MT seems to have selected some text. I cannot seem to unselect the text. Whenever I move the cursor it selects whatever is under it. i have tried hitting ESC to unselect it but still not working.
Has anyone esle run into this problem with the MT? If so what did you do to fix it?
Thanks and I look forward to your reply.

My trackpad on my late 2008 Macbook Pro also often (sometimes all the time...) selects everything on the screen where the mouse cursor is at that time.
Really annoying, because it just keep clicking and selecting, so moves windows, change cursor position during typing and lots more annoying things.
BUT I don't think my / the problem is software related !!!!!
I have my Macbook now for little over 2 years, and what I suspect is that the housing of the Macbook (to the left and right of the trackpad) is bending down towards the bottom of the laptop (so towards your legs if the laptop is just sitting in your lap). Maybe it's material fatigue or it becomes softer when it becomes warm/hot because of the battery....
It sometimes gets so worse that I just have to touch the long edge of the laptop soooooo very gentle, with one finger, and it responds as a mouse click.
The problem comes and goes. Sometimes its not there for weeks, and other times its there for a long time.
Really annoying because the laptop is now over 2 years old, and I don't think I have warranty anymore.... (and also because it is the "old" all silver Macbook Pro 17" and they don't make these anymore. And I like the look of it better then the new line of Macbook's.
Ideas anyone ?????
Thanks!!

  • MAGIC TRACKPAD how to select text?  There is no "mouse button" to hold down

The magic trackpad doesn't seem to have a "button" that can be held down while dragging (in order to select text etc).
I want to select text & then paste it into an input box (for example, Search).
Apple needs to add virtual Function Keys to the top of the MT, allowing you to turn on scripted functions related to selecting, dragging, copying, pasting etc.

Press down on the trackpad until it clicks.
Nope, the magic trackpad doesn't do this. That's the problem.
Huh, how odd. Mine does. Did Apple change the Magic Trackpad since I bought mine? Or maybe yours is defective?
The press-down-till-click is also used in either the left or right bottom corner to activate a right-click. Chosen in the trackpad preferences. Though I've gotten used to the two-finger tap for that instead.

  • Magic Trackpad Stuck Button

The power button in the magic trackpad is stuck and i can't turn on. Is there a way that i can get it out (fix it)?

I hate to say it, but it was only a temporary fix. Things so went back to the crazy selecting everything. I read some more, cleaned the MT with Windex even, but nothing helped. It must be faulty design or buggy software. I hope it's the latter and that it's fixed soon.

  • Magic Trackpad, how to drag text?

Using Lion, I have set my system prefs to tap to click and dragging with drag lock in universal access.
Now, what i want to do is to be able to double tap on a text section or a word and drag it.
Sometimes i do it by mistake, but what is the way to do it?
    Thanks in advance!

Hi rawsaxy, Sorry you are still having issues. Mouse-Clicks go like this:
    2 = word
    3 = paragraph
You can also click, hold and drag over the text to select just that portion of it.
To "grab the text" which will enable you to drag it, "click" onto your selected text and pause. Pausing is very important. Your computer is programmed to ignore false commands, so pausing tells it "you mean business."
You should be able to drag your selected text any where on your screen and "drop it."
Also, don't forget the work-around's. Such as "Cutting" and then "Pasting." Either from the drop-down menu or via key-commands. This dose the same thing but can be used when you cannot visually see where you want to "drop" your item (e.g., the window or application is hidden).
One other suggestion. Do you live near or can you get to a place that sell's Apples? Best Buy or even an Apple Store? Because, if you can, I'm sure there is someone there that could help coach you using your mouse or trackpad.
    Good luck!

  • Change Magic Trackpad move cursor, select functions

I just got a Magic Trackpad for my iMac and it's great but... it's too sensitive to my admittedly heady-handed use. Can I separate the single-finger cursor movement function from the "touch and click" selection function so I can move the cursor but need a specific (two-finger?) touch/tap for selection?

Press down on the trackpad until it clicks.
Nope, the magic trackpad doesn't do this. That's the problem.

  • Magic Wand no longer selects text? According to Tolerances in Fill, Stroke width, Opacity... nothing.

Yep. That's the whole of it.
Don't slip backwards Adobe, I'm only just starting to want to believe in you again.
Still works as expected since Illustrator 7 on Path objects. But not on Text.
Didn't find any similar issues, anyone else?

Thank you for sharing such an informative post! I'd like to offer one small correction.
My company publishes children's picture storybooks in print. These are edge to edge full color pages for those who may not be familiar with this format. Our early ePub's were always disappointing in that we could not duplicate the print format without showing considerable white margins on an e-reader. We have since solved that problem in order to achieve the maximum image size. There will always be some amount of white margin in ePub format, but our image output now nearly fills the screen of any e-reader.
The 600X860 resolution is correct in order to achieve a wall to wall ePub image. The image must be created at that resolution for insertion into the document, and the page setup must also be set at the same dimension, which in inches is 8.333X11.944. You cannot, for example, use a smaller size image and drag it with constrained proportions to fill the viewport at the 600X860 resolution. The exported ePub file recognizes the portion of the image that is beyond the margins of the viewport and it will show up in an e-reader with a large white bottom margin.
Dragging a smaller image than the 600X860 resolution to fill the viewport with unconstrained proportions will work, but of course distorts the image. So, create your images at 600X860, insert them into your doc, export to ePub and you will be happy, happy, happy!

  • Magic trackpad freezes

After installing 10.7.3 when waking from sleep magic trackpad sometimes freezes. If I then I use a mouse the magic trackpad starts working.

Select  ▹ System Preferences ▹ Bluetooth. Select the device in the list on the left, then from the action menu (gear icon) below the list, select Update Services. Any change?

  • Magic Trackpad Text Select

    Hi folks.
Just bought a Magic Trackpad.  Seems quite nice.  However some items I can't seem to find how to do.
I want to select text in AppleScript Editor, or any text editor for that matter.
Single finger double click, with finger up, selects a word.  I want to select words.  I also want to select text, character to character.  How can these be done?  Do I have to use the keyboard?  That pretty much kills the need for a trackpad.
    Cheers

I've tried pretty much all of these methods. I find the double tap a bit annoying as the software decides that there is a time out when you lift off the trackpad (with Drag Lock turned off) that means when I select text and drag it then sometimes the selection continues rather than the selected text moving.
3 fingers was just too inaccurate for me.  I was about to revert to the mouse!
The I realized that if you use your thumb in a corner of the trackpad for left click it just works great. Clicking with your selection finger requires too much continued pressure to be accurate, but your thumb is perfect for this.  The coordination between thumb and finger also means you don't accidentally move the cursor while clicking.
I think I was confused by the lack of a button, I just needed to realize that it is still effectively there!  Now I click things by pushing my middle finger and select text using my thumb and my middle finger and everything is suddenly rosy again.

  • Why does my 2012 Retina Macbook Pro's trackpad become extremely unresponsive after I plug in a USB mouse? The only trackpad command that works is the left click, I can't select text or press down and hold the trackpad to do anything else until I restart.

My trackpad becomes REALLY unresponsive after I plug in a USB mouse. It seems like the cursor is broken and stuck on a permanent left click or something. I'm unable to select text or do any other sort of action that requires you to hold down the trackpad and drag. Mouse icons don't update as I scroll over different text and links. The trackpad is usually stuck in this unresponsive state until I restart my macbook which is extremely inconvenient if I have to do this after every time I use a USB mouse. Are there any fixes to this?

    Melophage,
I don't leave it outside. Usually when I leave it overnight, I do so under the same conditions as when I leave it plugged in, and this morning I only left it for about an hour in my house and it did the same thing.
    LowLuster,
I actually have a new hard drive I bought a while back and have been meaning to switch it out with the one that's in there now. I'll follow your instruction, then make the switch I had planned on and report back.

  • Magic Trackpad: how to drag'n drop text?

I have a new Magic Trackpad but am having problems finding all the features my Magic Mouse has. How do I drag a selection of text? It seems reasonable that I should just hold down and drag the text, but nothing happens.

It was three months ago to the day that the update which caused all the problems with this input device was issued. Apple appear to be unwilling to acknowledge that such a problem even exists.

  • How do you select multiple words using a Magic Trackpad?

I know how to select multiple words with my mouse, but cannot figure out how to do it using my new Magic Trackpad. Here's the deal:
Let's say you want to select "cannot figure out how to" in the sentence above. With my mouse, I'd place the cursor somewhere over the word "cannot," double-left-click and keep holding the button down. Then, dragging to the right, it would select each word in its entirety as I moved along the sentence. I do this all the time since it is a very quick way to select text.
Okay, so how do you do this with the Magic Trackpad?
I try a similar behavior, but it doesn't work. If I double-tap on "cannot," for example, one of two things happens. Either only the word "cannot" is highlighted and dragging does nothing to highlight more text. Or, if I'm quicker with the drag (aka swipe) right, it will select one character at a time starting from the cursor position when I double-tapped and not entire words, as I want.
    I'm stumped. Anyone?

    Jeffrey,
The only good way seems to be by using the physical click on the Trackpad. Double physical click then drag. Much the way it's done on the mouse.

  • HT203171 Magic Trackpad fail. It keeps clicking, sticking, selecting everything to the point of unusability. I'm lucky I have my old "mighty" mouse as a back up. SO annoyed right now. What gives anyways? Why did the trackpad just stop working all of a sud

    It's bugging me so bad.
I loved everything about it too, the swiping, gestures and everything are so intuitive. Now, no more thatn 20 minutes ago it just goes crazy. Rebooted the computer. Changed the batteries. Disconnected and reconnected everything. ARGGGGGG.
So lucky I kept an old wireless Might Mouse around, but it feels like being stuck in the past.
    Now I'm really upset.
OK, so that was mostly a rant, but man, I'm really ticked. My productivity has gone down in half! I was very acustomed to the trackpad by now - 1 year after purchasing my iMac... and conveniently AFTER the warranty. Those things are like $70!!!
So far there doesn't seem to be a solution. I know it's not a battery or anything - the trackpad is separate from the computer. Tried cleaning the trackpad several times, and no effect.
    Please help -
    Thanks,

Forget everything I wrote about bluetooth device interference having anything to do with this issue. I was obviously headed down a rabbit trail with this suggestion.
What I've since determined (that is working for me) is to focus in on the small round bumpers on the backside of the trackpad. I suspect that over time these probably loosen and become more sensitive or even stuck. This might explain the auto-selecting in the erratic behavior of the trackpad.
As a workaround, I used a felt cloth (folded several times) to elevate the backside of the trackpad so that the bumpers no longer touch my desk. This takes a loose or stuck bumper switch out of the picture. Then I enabled the trackpad features for "Tap to click" and "Secondary click," which are located at:  System Preference > Trackpad > Point & Click.
Only if you have serious computer repair skills would I advise attempting to adjust the sensitivy of the bumper switch: http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Repairing+Magic+Trackpad+Click+Feature/6171/1
As for myself, I'll be purchasing a new trackpad tomorrow morning. I love this device, but it seems that once the bumpers begin to wear out, they do so quite abruptly, and your best course is to get a replacement before pulling out any hair you still have left.
Again, my apologies about the mis-cue on the bluetooth issue. Good luck!

  • Batteries stuck in my magic trackpad - any ideas

My son's magic trackpad was not used for some time and when I tried to use it today the batteris were stuck.  I managed to remove the first battery by banging in on the table but the second one won't come out.  Any suggestions on how to remove it without damaging the product?

You can only use a tool that will provide leverage but you will also understand no-one here can accept responsibility for what happens.
If you do get it out, be sure to thoroughly clean the contact points before putting in new batteries.   They have clearly leaked and will leave residue which will affect or even prevent performance.
If you go to a local computer repairer, they may help but unless it is an Apple authorised store, do not let them do any more than that.

  • Magic Trackpad able to move cursor with finger movements, will not respond to selecting or tapping an item

    Hello,
I have a Magic Trackpad that I'm trying to get to work on a Mac Mini OSX 10.6.8.  I should note I recently purchased the trackpad second hand and not been ever able to have it fully functioning.  The trackpad connects to the mini with no issue and I am able to move the cursor in any direction with no problem.  I can not however get this trackpad to select an item or otherwise open anything.  It seems it is unresponsive to either me pressing my finger down or tapping the trackpad to select something.
Do I just have a boken trackpad?  Or am I doing something wrong/need a configuration change?  I have a magic mouse that works without issue, but this trackpad is giving me fits!

You have to press hard enough to make the feet at the front corners click, or you can enable Tap-to-Click in the Trackpad system preference.

  • When i use trackpad to select text, i must hit keyboard keys twice

i've been using my trackpad successfully for months, but since the last update i've found that when using it to select text by swiping with three fingers, i must hit keyboard keys TWICE to successfully edit text. For example, if i swipe across a sentence and then hit the "delete" button, NOTHING. i have to hit "delete" twice. same with command c, command x, and so on. this is creating real havoc, and happens in nearly all of my applications, including word, dreamweaver, and indesign.
however, this does NOT happen when i select text by tapping.
also, it does NOT happen here in chrome.
i've reset my pram/nvram, confirmed that nothing is checked in my accessibility settings, and reconnected the trackpad. please help...i was just growing to love that dang trackpad.
    thanks...annette

Any or all of the following third-party system modifications may be contributing to your problem:
    SX-Virtual Link
    Soundflower
If the panic is recurrent, I suggest you uninstall them, one at a time, according to the developers' instructions, to see whether you can identify which one is at fault. A conflict between modifications may be involved. Reboot and test after each uninstallation.
Back up all data before making any changes.
