Magic trackpad won't drag-&-drop

Just find that i can't double tap-&-hold to use drag-&-drop. i can double click, but can't drag-&-drop.
However, i can use three fingers to drag-&-drop windows position, even files in finder.
Why? how to solve this? I'm using the latest iMac and Mavericks with Magic Trackpad.

If third-party software called "Air Display" or "AirParrot" is installed, remove it according to the developer's instructions, then reboot. Back up all data before making any changes.

  • Magic Trackpad won't work with Magic Mouse on brand new 2011 27" i5 iMac

I have a brand new 2011 27" i5 iMac which I bought with Snow Leopard pre-loaded. Naturally, I included the new Magic Trackpad in my purchase, and though there were some problems with the device in SL - such as it going haywire without explanation - it generally worked, although battery levels were erratic (one day 80%, then an hour later 42%, then 80% again).
When I installed Lion I did a clean install after backing up to Time Machine - and a Super Dupered external drive. I had some difficulties trying to install Lion from an external flash drive so I deleted again and reinstalled SL, then reinstalled over the SL install I did (with no other software except Mac OS X 10.6.8 and other system updates to facilitate install). Rather than copying apps from my old SL drive, I downloaded fresh copies and reinstalled one by one. I don't use a lot of apps apart from Microsoft Office, browsers and iLife and have not installed any additional scripts, extensions or add-ons (like USB Overdrive). It's a pretty clean install.
Since then, although I'm generally happy with Lion, the Magic Trackpad won't work! It does work for a little while with basic gestures - mainly moving the cursor and scrolling - then it gives up the ghost and loses connectivity. I have done the following:
Disconnected and reconnected the MTP after turning it on and off. MTP works for about two minutes, goes crazy then no response.
Shut the computer down, pulled out the plug, waited two minutes, then started up again. MTP works for about two minutes, goes crazy then no response.
Run Onyx, shut down computer, then pulled out plug (see above).
Checked options in Universal Access, shut off "Ignore other devices when trackpad in use" (or whatever the option is). MTP works for about two minutes, goes crazy then no response.
Turned off the Magic Mouse. MTP works for about two minutes, goes crazy then no response.
But none of this seems to work! I know the MTP is connected because I can see it in the BT menu in the menu bar and also in System Preferences. I have noticed since upgrading that my permissions - which when I bought the computer were totally clean - now run lines and lines about "Library/Core Services" so I am unsure whether this is related. I also notice a lot of people are in the same boat as me, which makes me wonder if it's either a hardware issue or a release issue - after a week or so of totally silent running, my 2TB Hitachi HDD started up with the grumbly tum. I'd really appreciate any tips from anyone out there!

    Hi, marksaner
You could try installing the latest version of the Synaptics driver. Synaptics is the company that makes the UltraNav driver and drivers for many other computer brands. This driver should have the same functionality as the UltraNav driver, so there's no worry there. You can find the driver here.
    Hope it helps,
    Adam

  • My Magic Trackpad won't work on my Mac Mini?

My Magic Trackpad won't work on my Mac Mini? The cursor moves a little and then will not respond at all. Gestures do not work

Yes, it's one of the things that can interfere.  Here are some others including airport.  Try changing your access point to use 5 Ghz or a lower 2.4 GHz channel.

  • Magic trackpad won't come on

I leave my computer on & when I wake it up the magic trackpad won't turn on for about 10 to 15 minutes.  Batteries were changed & computer was turned off & on.  Any suggestions?

    Hello esmeralda724,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities! I understand that you are experiencing issues with your Magic Trackpad after waking your computer from sleep. Have you tried clicking the Trackpad in an attempt to wake it up? Check out the following resource for more information:
Wireless input devices: Bluetooth frequently asked questions - Apple Support
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT3887
    9. After my computer starts up or wakes from sleep, when will the wireless devices become active?
Wireless devices are usually available a few moments after the computer completes the startup process. After waking from sleep, Apple Magic Mouse and Apple Wireless Keyboard (2009) should be available right away. Other wireless devices can take up to 5 seconds to be recognized when waking from sleep. You may need to click a button on the wireless mouse once or twice to wake it up.
Some Bluetooth devices—such as audio headsets—may disconnect to conserve the devices battery power after no audio or data is present for a certain amount of time. In such cases, you may need to push a button on the device or headset to make it active again. Check the documentation that came with your device for more information.
    Cheers,
    Matt M.

  • Magic Trackpad: how to drag'n drop text?

I have a new Magic Trackpad but am having problems finding all the features my Magic Mouse has. How do I drag a selection of text? It seems reasonable that I should just hold down and drag the text, but nothing happens.

It was three months ago to the day that the update which caused all the problems with this input device was issued. Apple appear to be unwilling to acknowledge that such a problem even exists.

  • New mac mini - magic trackpad - won't do initial pairing (hence no anything

So I just got a Mac Mini server, and I've only had laptops in the house up until now (so no USB keyboards or mice), so I got a Magic Trackpad and the wireless keyboard. Upon booting for the first time, I get the expected image to turn on the wireless mouse to pair, so I turn on the magic trackpad and... nothing. I turn it off, I turn it back on. I turn it on and hold the power button. I turn off the MacMini and restart and try again. I do a little dance to the Bluetooth spirits, and still nothing. Anyone have any ideas aside from go out and buy a wired mouse? (Note: I cannot go to preferences, as I cannot get past this initial waiting-for-bluetooth-mouse-screen.)

Probably, it is because the Magic Trackpad requires at least 10.6.4 (and an additional update), or 10.6.5 (out of the box): so, if the install disc is only 10.6.3 or less, maybe it won't detect the trackpad.
You could try first with a wireless (for example, the Magic Mouse works) or wired mouse, and install the trackpad afterwards, after having updated the OS to 10.6.5.

  • Magic Trackpad won't connect to new MacBook Air

I'm running OS X Yosemite 10.10.1 on a new 13-in MacBook Air.  My Magic Trackpad shows up under the Bluetooth menu bar but won't connect when I click on connect. When I go to Bluetooth preferences, it doesn't appear in the list of devices and when I go to Trackpad preferences and try to set it up as a bluetooth device it also doesn't show up. I've tried turning the power off/on on the trackpad and making sure that it's discoverable. The indicator light flashes to show that's it discoverable but it just doesn't seem to be picked up by my MacBook Air. I've also tried loading fresh batteries in the trackpad but still nothing. Suggestions?

Was the trackpad connected to something else? If so, it needs to be deleted from there first.

  • Magic Trackpad won't work properly

In the bluetooth preferences my magic trackpad connects, but in the trackpad preferences it doesn't show up. What's going on?!
I can use basic mouselike functions with my trackpad, but since it won't show up in the trackpad preferences I can't use it do anything "magical". That renders it usesless. (I can use an old-fashioned mouse to do that)
I'm usig a new iMac (quad core) with system 10.6.8. In the trackpad preference it says "no trackpad found". If I restart the trackpad it can be found, but when I click "continue" it disconnects. Then I go back to the bluetooth preferences to see that it's still connected! Like I said, I can use the most basic functions, but only those basic functions. Very frustrating...
The batteries are good and I place the trackpad right under the computer monitor to avoid interferrence, etc. Is it possible there's a software glitch somewhere?!

I'm guessing that, if you don't know what USB Overdrive is, you probably have not installed it. It is not something that comes with your computer. Here is is a link for USB Overdrive:
    http://www.usboverdrive.com/USBOverdrive/News.html
If you have USB Overdrive installed on your computer you will see it as and icon at the bottom of the "System Preferences" window. If you see it there, you can click on it to open its control window and delete it from there. But like I said, I'm thinking that's probably not your problem. Still, go take a look at the bottom of your system preferences just to make sure.
I'm wondering, though, if you installed any other software for a mouse, or other type of controller, maybe it would cause similar problems too. Maybe you should check for other things you may have installed (?).

  • Magic Trackpad won't connect with Mountain Lion

Upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion and now my MBP won't recognize my Magic Trackpad... tried replacing batteries and everything... green light turns on fine, but never registers with the OS.  Have a bluetoo

Scott Rose's solution here seemed to work for me (for now)... needed to hard reset and jump through a few hoops of trying to reconnect but it finally did and working fine now.

  • My magic trackpad won't recognize a 2 finger scroll.

Why won't my magic trackpad recognize a 2 finger scrolling motion when it recognizes all of the other motions on the video?

  • Magic Trackpad - One Finger Dragging/Drag Lock Not Working

So I'm loving my new Magic Trackpad, but my one finger dragging and drag lock does not seem to be working.
First of all, it is enabled under System Preferences-->Trackpad. No matter what I do, I cannot get one finger dragging to work. I logged in under my wife's account, enabled it there, and tried but still no luck. It doesn't appear to be working under either of our accounts.
I've yet to create a brand new account to try, but my wife's account just as well be new, as it's virtually never used.
Note that I did have a Magic Mouse previously and using MagicPrefs. I'm curious if this might be causing issues, but I haven't tried removing it yet.
Any ideas? Physically clicking while dragging is about to drive me crazy.

QUICK FIX: Change the option for the three-finger gesture to dragging; it works.
Although I wish I could do one-finger dragging and keep the three-finger gesture for Navigation.
But not being able to drag or select text/pics, was a more urgent desire than Navigation, so I changed the option on the three-finger gesture.
I have had the SAME PROBLEM with dragging and drag lock (whatever 'drag lock,' is, I haven't seen explained; it doesn't work for me, yet).
_Everything else I've gotten to work_ (secondary click in left/right corners took a while - now I learned that I actually got to push down/click; or, at least, doing that makes it work).
But, one finger dragging - still no go.
I'll try the suggestions here. Check out the apps mentioned. Subscribe. See what happens.
P.S. - It doesn't 'shock me,' that a brand new product with first version software is not perfect, nor that I/we may have a bit of a learning curve.
My right wrist was ready for a rest and my left hand eager to get into computer use, so I love this product, find it 'graceful,' and pleasant and have confidence that it will be improved by Apple and others, and ourselves as we get use to it.

  • My Magic Trackpad won't do all the Lion gestures.

I can do Swipe between pages and Show Desktop and Launchpad, but not Mission Control or App Expose.  All gestures work on the MB Air 13, but not on the Magic Trackpad.  Any ideas?

I have a similar problem. The zooming  in/out does not work, or is very slow on my iMac 2010.
In preferences all is checked. The swiping of pages is not working.
And comparing with my iPad, the gestures on on my magic trackpad are very poor indeed!
    Not what I expected.

btw: the spelling corrector in this reply is not working, so excuse my spelling and grammar.
Could this be caused by Lion?

  • Magic trackpad won't pair

Just bought a magic trackpad and I can't get it to pair with my mac mini.
I have a 2009 mac mini running lion with 8 gigs of ram.
I turn on the trackpad and the light begins to blink , and then I click the
track pad button in system preferences but it never finds the trackpad.

    Never mind!
I restarted the computer and tried it again and the trackpad was quickly paired.
So, all is right in the world.
    Thanks

  • My Magic Trackpad won't stop clicking EVERYTHING!

I bought a Magic Trackpad around last year in May, and suddenly it started clicking everything! It randomly settles down, but when I maneuver the mouse around the screen it starts clicking and highlighting everything. Has that happened to anyone else? I'm not sure what's wrong with it. Can it be fixed or is it now completely useless and do I have to throw about $70 away and get a new one?

    A quick fix for you to try;
If you have an iPhone in the room, turn it off.
My trackpad was going mental clicking by itself, I turned off my iPhone (4) and trackpad behaves normally.
Been watching a movie now for an hour and no 'magic' clicks.
This just seems FAR too ridiculous to be the problem, but would be interesting if a few of you guys could give it a try also.

  • Magic Trackpad, how to drag text?

Using Lion, I have set my system prefs to tap to click and dragging with drag lock in universal access.
Now, what i want to do is to be able to double tap on a text section or a word and drag it.
Sometimes i do it by mistake, but what is the way to do it?
    Thanks in advance!

Hi rawsaxy, Sorry you are still having issues. Mouse-Clicks go like this:
    2 = word
    3 = paragraph
You can also click, hold and drag over the text to select just that portion of it.
To "grab the text" which will enable you to drag it, "click" onto your selected text and pause. Pausing is very important. Your computer is programmed to ignore false commands, so pausing tells it "you mean business."
You should be able to drag your selected text any where on your screen and "drop it."
Also, don't forget the work-around's. Such as "Cutting" and then "Pasting." Either from the drop-down menu or via key-commands. This dose the same thing but can be used when you cannot visually see where you want to "drop" your item (e.g., the window or application is hidden).
One other suggestion. Do you live near or can you get to a place that sell's Apples? Best Buy or even an Apple Store? Because, if you can, I'm sure there is someone there that could help coach you using your mouse or trackpad.
    Good luck!
