Magic Wand help (Photoshop CS5)

Hi guys, I wondered if anyone can help me.
I have used the Magic Wand for a couple of years, taking out backgrounds etc to create transparent GIFs.
Now when I use it, the edges of whatever I have cut out are always jagged.
Does anyone know what this could be?  I have anti-aliasing checked at the top, and haven't changed anything that I know of.
It seems to get worse when the image is resized and made smaller also.
Any help appreciated!

  • Please help: Photoshop CS5 - Yosemite locked permissions?

Please I hope someone can help!
I just updated my older iMac with Yosemite, and reinstalled Adobe CS 5. What a mess. Neither Illustrator or InDesign will launch. Photoshop will work, but has problems. (Thank God I've not touched my newer, main studio working iMac's OS, where CS5 still runs fine.)
In trying to quit Photoshop (which won't respond to quitting and must be force-quit), I am getting the error message, "Could not save Preferences because the file is locked or you do not have necessary access privileges. Use the 'Get Info' command in the Finder to unlock the file or change permissions on the file of enclosing folders."
I searched around and found what was sure to be a promising fix posted some time ago (see below, "Here's the Fix"), but the problem is, when I hold down Option > Go ... Library to navigate to the "Adobe Photoshop CS5 Settings", the damned folder is actually EMPTY! There is no file to click on in order to get info on it! So I cannot even tamper with permissions. Ugh. It's bad enough the neither Illustrator nor InDesign will launch. What a sorry mess. I will not TOUCH my MacBook Pro laptop or main iMac. I will leave well enough alone. So glad I only messed with this one computer I rarely do anything on anymore. It could be that this is an old early 2009 iMac, sure, but I don't trust the new OS.
Anyone encounter similar, and have any workaround? Thank you in advance!
    HERE'S THE FIX:
Navigate to /Users/YOURUSERNAME/Library/Preferences/Adobe Photoshop CS5 Settings
    Select that file File>Get Info
At the very bottom under permissions, hit the + icon.
Add your user name from the list that pops up.
    Highlight the user just added.
Click the gear icon to the right of the +/-
    Choose make owner.
Click the gear icon again and choose apply to folder contents.
    Open Photoshop.
    That should do the trick!

Have you tried saving as another layer-capable format, tif or psb?
Is there anything notable about the files – extraordinary number of layers, size or whatever?
Other than that have you performed the usual trouble-shooting routines (trashing prefs by keeping command-alt-shift pressed while starting Photoshop, 3rd party plug-ins deactivation, system maintenance, font validation, etc.)?

  • Why can't I delete a selection when I am using magic wand in Photoshop CS4?

I know I've done this before.  I want to select part of an image using magic wand, then delete it, so that the background is transparent.  The selection will not delete.  Do I have some weird setting picked?  Thanks!
    -- Jane

Did you convert the background into a layer before pressing delete? (by double clicking the background layer in your layers pallete)
otherwise, pressing delete will simply fill the selection with your current background color.
    edit:
also make sure you have this option unchecked:

  • Photoshop CS 5 - Magic Wand Tool Problem

When I use the magic wand in Photoshop CS5, it selects the entire image, not just the section I'm hovering over. I'm working in a Windows environment.
    Any suggestions?

Try resetting the magic wand tool by right clicking on the magic wand icon in the tool options bar and choosing reset tool.
Also check what the sample size is set for the eyedropper tool (that effects the magic wand)
You probably want one of the first three settings.

  • Magic Wand?

I've got a piece of video where the subject's white shirt is blown out, but everything else is OK. FCP doesn't have a "magic wand" like Photoshop where I can select just the white shirt and bring the brightness/contrast down, does it? I am trying to find an easier way than duplicating the vid onto V2 and cutting a mask out of the shirt and adjusting the brightness/contrast on the V1 clip. Does that sound like a waste of time, doing more than necessary? Time is money, as they say.
    Thanks
    Jonathan

OK, Maxx and David, my bad, you can start lashing me now.
After going back and pouring over the manual, I found what I was doing wrong. I thought that nothing happened when I clicked the eyedropper on white in the canvas...because the color stripe above the Sat and Luma didn't change...I was expeecting white to show up between the sliders...but I didn't notice that the Luma changed...so it does work.
I've said it before, but I mean it this time...I will not doubt you all again. I'm sooooooo sorry.
Forgive me yet? Points doled out by who chimed in first.

  • CS Crashes upon using Magic Wand tool

As the title says. Every time I use the magic wand tool, Photoshop CS crashes. I tried resetting the program but it didn't work. I cannot find a patch for this anywhere. Its making photoediting very difficult! Is there a patch I can download anywhere? Such an expensive program should NOT be crashing like this.

Hi. This forum is for beginners trying to learn the basics of Photoshop.  I'm moving your question to the Photoshop General Discussion forum for specialized attention to your situation.

  • CS5: Magic Wand fails intermittently; cannot use Channel Mixer on selection

    Hello,
Using CS5 / Photoshop on Mac OS 10.6.4. 4GB RAM.
The Magic Wand tool fails intermittently.  Quitting PS and rebooting seems to re-enable use of the Magic Wand.
However, even when the Magic Wand tool does "work", for some reason I can no longer use any of the items in Image -> Adjustments, such as the Channel Mixer.  This functionality was working just 20 minutes ago, and now even with multiple reboots I cannot seem to get it working again.
Googling came up with no relevant articles on this errant behavior.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Could you post a screenshot?

  • Magic Wand Tool Help, please

This one is driving me a bit nuts.
I work in a Hotel, and use a lot of company logos for display purposes on our 40inch screens (modulex), I work mostly with black backgrounds, as it looks better.
Ok, on my other laptop , i have photoshop 7 and if i choose a logo like the one's below for example, i just drag the logo into photoshop 7.
I don't want the red background or the white one, and on many other logos i don't want the background either, so all i do in photoshop 7 is use the magic wand tool & it automatically cuts it out, apart from the bits in the O's, As etc.
    EASY!!!
However on my new laptop with photoshop CS5, i follow the same method, but the magic wand tool selects the whole image.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.

What he meant was, in Photoshop, choose Edit - Preferences - Performance and see if the [  ] Enable OpenGL Drawing box is checked.
If you do choose to change this setting to see if it makes any difference, remember to close and restart Photoshop before testing, and remember to turn it back on again after if it doesn't help with the problem.  This page describes what OpenGL does for you:

That's no bad thing Chuck.  It indicates that you have better things to do than constantly refresh the forum LOL.
I'm having a wee posting spree today after lacking the inclination to respond to the same old threads for the last few days.    But I do love it when people get all in a tizzy complaining about stuff that is right under their nose (so to speak).   So I guess my criteria for responding is often based as much on how big a smile it puts on my face, as to how much I am helping the OP.   Unfortunately that irreverent approach gets me into trouble at times, and one of the moderators deleted one of my illustrated replies just a few days ago.  It took me a few minutes to work out why it had been deleted.  The subtext was 'risking one eye', and I eventually realized that the implied 'risk' could definitely be seen as offensive to some people.

  • Magic wand selects everything. Help!

    Hi,
I'm using Illustrator CS6 and I haven't been able to use the magic wand tool. I have Photoshop CS6 and the magic wand works perfectly in that program. The problem is that I mainly use Illustrator to work and if I try to open the image in Photoshop the colours don't fill properly (white fuzzy edges) so it's not really a solution for me to just use photoshop instead. I'd really like to get to the bottom of this. I've looked through dozens of forums and tutorials and can't find anything that solves my problem.
The images I'm working with were created by myself from scratch using illustrator. I was working on a multilayer image, and I selected the option to use all layers in the magic wand tool option bar but it didn't work. So, I flattened all layers so that I would be working on a single layer image and still nothiing. The image has been fully coloured using live paint. I want to be able to quickly change the colours in the image without having to reselect and colour every portion. I worked with a limited colour palette of maybe 10 colours, so really this image should be perfect for magic wand. I have set the tolerance at zero for fill colour. The other options are deselected. If someone could help it would be much appreciated. It's very frustrating!!
    Thanks!
    Shira

The magic wand does not select objects it selects the color. That color is placed in the swatch well at the bottom of the toolbar.
What you can do it use the selection tool (the back arrow at top of toolbar or the lowercase v on keyboard.) Select one of the colors you want to change, then in the top menu goto Select>Same>(choose an option) This will allow you to select all the same colored fills or strokes and change that color all at the same time. Just a matter of double clicking on that color swatch at the bottom of the toolbar to bring up the color picker or use the swatches in the top tool bar when the selection tool is active.

  • Photoshop CS5.1 crashes when trying to open Manage Custom Sizes in print window. Help??

I have OS 10.10.2.  When printing and trying to access the "Manage Custom Sizes" in the print window, my Photoshop CS5.1 crashes.  I have not had problems up until now.  Not sure what changed. Can anyone help me figure this out?

A preferences reset should fix it.
Macintosh - CMD-SHIFT-OPTION immediately after you double-click the PS icon.
Release those keys when you see the Delete Photoshop Settings dialog. Click "Yes" to do this.
You may have to go into the CS5 application folder and directly double-click the Photoshop.app there.

  • Photoshop CS5 is suddenly crashing anytime I try to open a file - need help!

My Macbook was running quite slow this morning (hadn't restarted in a number of days) so I quit all applications and restarted. When I opened Photoshop, then selected the file I was last working on to open, PS crashed immediately (didn't get to open the file). I submitted a report, then restarted PS and tried again with anther file (thinking maybe I had a corrupt file)... same result. I can't get it to open ANYTHING without crashing...
Not sure if any of the crash report is helpful, but here's the first 1/4 or so:

  • Need help with a filter to use in Photoshop CS5

I am a novice so please be  patient.  Over the past 15 years or so I have been using a simple filter  that I created in Filter Factory to do some analysis on aerial  photographs.  I am way behind on updates (currently using Photoshop CS  (version 8)).  I want to upgrade and am using a trial of CS5.  After  talking with customer support I've found there is no way to use this  filter in CS5 and Filter Factory is no longer supported in the Photoshop  suite.  Can someone help me to create the same filter in Pixel Bender  to use in Photoshop CS5?  I will share the details of the filter if  someone responds.
    Thanks!

Is the result a one channel image? The Pixel Bender language currently supports one and two channel images, in addition to three and four channel images, but unfortunately the tools do not. You should be able to fake the one channel output by marking only a single channel of a three or four channel image. In any case, give the filter, below, a try. It may not do exactly what you want but it should get you most of the way there. You'll want to duplicate it and modify the arithmetic to satisfy the second filter algorithm once you've got the filter tuned to fit your needs.
