Magnets Affecting Cinema Displays?

Hi all -
I have two 23" Apple Cinema Displays that I use side by side. I also have two bookshelf speakers on either side of them. I placed the speakers there thinking there would be no impact on the displays, but now I am not so certain.
There is a definite discoloration along the outside vertical edge of each display next to where each speaker sits. In other words, the left side of my left display and the right side of my right display both have a 1/2"-1" edge that is visibly darker than the rest of the displays.
Is it possible that the magnets in the speakers have really have an impact on the displays after all?
Brian

Sometimes these kinds of stains in LCD panels are related to contamination within the LC material. It is often called "ion contamination" when the contaminating particles have non-zero net charge. Could such ions be drawn towards magnets? I kind of doubt it, but who knows. If the contamination wasn't there in the first place, the problem wouldn't be happening.

  • Putting a speaker nexto to the cinema display

    Hi,
I have a 27" thunderbolt apple cinema display which is hooked up with my macbook pro; I also have a wireless speaker which is always on my dek next to the display and I use it whe music; so I want to know if magnets in the speaker can damage the display over time ? The speaker is professional and I assume it has powerful built-in magnets
    thanks
    Al

LCDs are not affected by magnets.

  • Cinema display how to fix broken cable?

The connector of the power cable that goes into the power adaptor from my 30"cinema display just cracked, so now the monitor won't power on.  It's a fine working monitor, but how the **** do I fix this?   The cable is fused to the monitor itself.   It's obviously out of warranty and I'm very handy.  Is this something I can attempt to fix myself somehow?   How much would a service center charge to fix something as simple as this?  It's just the very tip of the power plug that's cracked open.

    Thanks for the reply Malcolm.
That's what's so baffling and why I had to ask the question here.
I'm using a HDCP compliant monitor (or at least it should be on an Apple monitor purchased late 2009-early 2010) and I still get an error. Everywhere I've checked it says the 24'' is HDCP compliant. Maybe I just missed the upgrade somehow?
Also to note: my old laptop was purchased post 2008. So the HDCP measures would have already taken affect and I was able to play HD videos just fine.

  • Switching to the cinema display by closing the macbook air

the nice feature of switching to the cinema display by closing the macbook air and reopening it to use the keyboard with a black (mb air-)screen -e.g.for shortcuts in CS5 or Cad -doesn't work any longer using OS X Lion which is quite annoying. Has anyone found a solution for this problem apart from the 'option with the magnet' ?
this keyboard shortcut puts both displays in hibernation mode
is there a keyboard shortcut which only puts the macbook (air) screen ( under Lion) to sleep ?
if not, this would be a helpful update for everyone using the mac with photoshop or autocad where  keyboard shortcuts are constantly needed and handling would be far easier with all windows & task bars on the cinema display only.
Alternatively, has anyone a clue how to put the task bar from the macbook screen to the cinema display ?

I dont know about the putting the screens to sleep, but as far as the task bar goes, when you have both screens running you can go in to display settings and you should see both screens, you can drag the task bar from the air screen to the cinema display.

  • Urgent problems with image viewing on my 20 inch Cinema display???

I have a very urgent problem concerning my Apple Cinema 20 inch Display and my SpyderPro2 on my Mac Pro Intel Dual Core Xeon 2x 2.66GHz.
I have been using the Spyder for some years now, but recently I have been having big problems with the results.
I have a major contract with a jewellery company in London, where I clean up digital photos. Images that I have lightened up to look great on my Cinema Display have been reported by my client to look pretty dark on their PC's in their offices.
Some of these images show lines and grubby patches??? To check this I opened files in Photoshop and moved the levels 'black' slider down quite some way, and did see evidence of what the client could see at their end? It seems that when I have used a faded eraser brush it leaves a light patch in between the shadows of the jewellery. This shouldn't be visible to the naked eye though?
I must point out that when I use the eyedropper tool on images, to read the amount of grey or colour in the white areas around the peices, I am shown values of 1,2 or 4 maximum in the CMYK values. 4 percent out of 100 is nothing and should not be visible to the naked eye?
How is it that my clients PC's can see dark shadows and where my eraser brush has rubbed out???
I have tried many re-calibrations and also tested all of my older calibrations dating back a few years. I have also tested the same faulty images on Intel iMac's, an eMac, and a few PC's. On the iMac's I can just about make out the artefacts that my client can see, but nothing that I would deem as unacceptable.
I am at a loss as to the fault, but It may be the Spyder2 Pro's inability to calibrate my Apple Cinema display properly? I may lose my contract which I cannot afford to do, and I simply have to find the cause ASAP.
I have my Mac's in my office apartment next to two bay windows. I have vertical blinds there. When calibrating I have always turned off all the lights and pulled the blinds right back so that only the light from the two large window doors is coming in.
For graphic design the calibrations seemed to be okay for quite some time, but recently it is getting harder to achieve good results with the Spyder? This could affect all of my workflow which is very serious. But I must stress that overall the Spyder results are not terrible. I can see good colours and dark levels and in general across all of my calibrated profiles, the jewellery looks acceptable on my Cinema Display?
I did say to my clients that they should calibrate their PC screen properly but their offices have many Screens and they all show the same artefacts (some much worse than others)? I know that PC Screens are darker than Mac's but a 4% grey should not be visible????
As these are a web company the images will be seen by PC users around the world and most of these will have no calibration on their screens. What can be done to prevent this and what is the cause of this? I can't possible please everyone, but as a creative professional I have to be 100% certain that my workflow is at its best.
I need urgent help to solve this or loose valuable business? I hope that you are able to help solve this mystery.
I have just purchased the new Spyder3 Pro which I hope will give perfect results but I have to find out what the cause of this is. If some of the fault lies with the client, I can charge these for all the testing and calibrating I have done.
    Kind regards,
    Jason Conway
    ideo-sync - inspired design.

One thing you might want to try adjusting is the gamma setting in Displays Preferences color calibration area. Macs typically are set at 1.8 but PCs will often use 2.2. That could account for the difference.

  • Mini DisplayPort + Cinema Display woes

So we have this brand new MacBook Pro, and a Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter was purchased to hook it up to a 20" Cinema Display, but it has this weird problem. If the MBP goes to sleep while hooked up to the second monitor, and then you wake it up, the second monitor flickers on and off wildly, also showing some bizarre colored lines. This happens roughly 75% of the time the Mac is woken up from sleep while plugged into the display.
Unplugging the DisplayPort and plugging it back in will solve the problem. So my question is, what could be causing this? At first I figured it could be the Mini DisplayPort adapter itself, but the problem seems to be too consistent for that to be the case. The problem ONLY happens when waking from sleep, and works totally fine otherwise. Could it be the MBP itself? Any thoughts?

There are NUMEROUS thread now about this in the Display forum, so please feel free to check them out. It's a bug that affects anybody with an external display. I'm hoping Apple fixes it soon....

  • Connecting a 20" Cinema Display and MacBook Pro 4,1

I admit I bought a cinema display from a co-worker because I thought it'd be nice to have a larger screen to attach to my MacBook pro 4,1. However, the monitor has a flat connector that doesn't seem to fit anywhere on my laptop. Is there some sort of adapter I can get? I've seen similar questions posted, but none with my exact specs.
Or, should I just sell the monitor back to him or someone else?

It says: Model Name: MacBook Pro
    Model Identifier: MacBookPro4,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Maybe I'm a total dork. on the right side, I see, back to front: a monitor adaptor (which i use at work to plug in a Dell), an Ethernet port, a square-ish port with a firewire symbol, another firewire (with the 'dog-eared' edge), a USB, and then a tiny tiny rounded little hole that doesn't appear to go to anything. On the other side, I have the magnetic power cord, another USB, and two small round holes - one for DVI?, one for headphones.
This is where I get a little confused. The Cinema Display looks like the one in the bottom right of this page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mini_DisplayPort, and the little round port on the left of my laptop has the same symbol, but is the size of the headphone port.
Do I need some adapter from the squareish one to the little round one?

  • Was there software included with the old style Cinema Displays?

okay, so I recently bought a 17" ADC LCD Apple Studio Display from its origional owner. I got the ADC/DVI converter to use it with my Mac Mini, so all I need now is the software it came with initially that the display was manufactured with to avoid wierdness from waking from sleep and using the onscreen button to controll the Mac. unfortunately the owner had lost the discs.
so this is where this post comes in, I've scoured the Apple Support site looking for this software, but with zero results.
anyone know where to get their hands on this stuff? the monitor is a 15" ADC LCD Cinema Display. any help would be super awesome!

    Hi
As far as I'm aware the displays and adapter didn't come with any software. I've bought a couple of the old style Apple ADC displays in the past (and DVI to ADC adapters more recently) and can't remember receiving any software with them.
Using the adapter, the brightness button on the display should bring up the Displays system preference, but the power button will have no affect.
What wierdness when waking from sleep are you getting? That doesn't sound normal.

  • Using mac mini with late 2008 LED Cinema DIsplay

Have the mac mini, 2.5 ghz. There is one Thunderbolt port, I am using that to use my 2008 (late) Apple Cinema LED Display. This display is supposed to be for the macbook pro, but I am using it on the mini...the power magnet cord is just dangling there and I plugged in the usb and the display cable into the thunderbolt (TB). Since I used the one TB port for the display, how can I hook up future drives, etc? Can't find a TB hub, maybe they will come someday too?
Question, is there any problem using this display on a mini and just not use the power connector?
    - Kevin

It can be done the problem is the hdmi port does not support the full native 27" resolution. It will go up to 1920x1200. Even then you need a converter.
    http://www.atlona.com/Atlona-HDMI-to-Mini-DisplayPort-Converter-and-Scaler.html
You could also use a displayport splitter.
    http://www.cinemaview.com/product/cinemaview-duo
And this one only seems to support 24" cinema displays.

  • Apple Cinema Display is not reading or seeing...

    Hello...
I would love to have your help on this situation.... My Apple Cinema Display is not reading or seeing my ipod adapter or my printer adapter at the back of the display. it is weird to see this happening now because it was working great until yesterday. I was like huh? how did this happen?
I tried to fix the mac with OS disc as well as Pro Tech Tool. they did not see anything wrong with it. think that the plug holes are worn out or burnt? thanks for your help... can email me with directions or explanations [email protected] (i rarely come in this boards unless I come up with a problem and i come here to check for information in this board...
It is Apple Cinema Display - LCD display - TFT - 20" - 1680 x 1050 (It is running strong for 6 or 7 years with no problems at all.)
    thanks!

The USB circuitry sometimes fails in older Apple displays. This can affect the USB ports, computer control of brightness, and computer sleep. Sometimes unplugging all cables from the display for a few minutes will fix it for a while.

  • Connecting to a 27 inch cinema display

I have a mid 2007 Macbook running OS10.7.1.  According to the tech specs for cinema display, it should be compatible with the cinema display, but I can't get any image on the screen.
I attempted to download the software update, (update 1.0) but when attempting to load it, I got a warning saying you need OS 10.6 to load, and it wouldn't permit loading.  Seems pretty odd, given that the tech specs permit 10.6 or later.
Any suggestions on 1) whether I need the software update (and if so how I can install it, given the problem described above), and 2) otherwise how I can get the display to link to my laptop.
    Thanks

Thanks for your reply. I will explore your suggestions. I have a MacBook not a MacBook Pro. Does that affect your advice?
A 2007 MacBook also has mini-dvi so nothing is changed.
I have asked about the problem at the Apple store with a cinema display specialist.
Apple stores have "cinema display specialists"?
They don't know what the problem is and suggest I bring the MacBook in to be checked. They didn't identify any compatibility problem.
Which is why I question the words "cinema display specialists"!
We know that the display works fine because we are able to operate it with a MacBook Pro (2011). But any further suggestions welcome.
Those machines have mini-diplayport (or is it thunderbolt by 2011?  -- doesn't matter).  So no adapters necessary and you know your display works.  But the video out ports are "apples and oranges" here (mini-displayport vs. mini-dvi).  The object your "game" is how to connect (female) mini-dvi to to a (male) mini-displayport display (don't even think about the thunderbolt display).
I've given you all the ideas I could think of, except when it comes to finding adapters or converters of various "flavors", it's google, google, google.

  • Mac Pro / Cinema Display slow boot time

    Hi there,
I have a late 2008 Mac Pro, running OSX 10.6.8 and it is connected to a 23" Apple Cinema Display.
A couple of days ago I noticed that when I switched the Mac on, the display would not turn on.
I forced it to shut down by holding the power button, and tried again, but nothing.
Today I switched it on, and again the display did not turn on, but I left it like that, and after about 25 minutes it turned on.
I shut it down from finder, and switched it back on and it worked instantly.
I used Disk Utility to clean up my disk, but I can't run a Disk Utility or Hardware Test from the CD, as the optical drive has not been working well for a few years.
I am guessing that it may be the display needing a while to "warm up" so it is dying, or that it might be a RAM issue that after the first long boot resolves itself.
Any thoughts as to how I should look into this more?
    Thanks!!

I used Disk Utility to clean up my disk, but I can't run a Disk Utility or Hardware Test from the CD, as the optical drive has not been working well for a few years.
Never use DVDs myself, definitely not for repairs.
Install OS X or clone the drive and have a 2nd bootable backup.
CCC can check files with checkum for integrity during copy (have to go into advanced options for copy operation).
Always have even a small boot drive handy. Even a flash drive can serve your purposes.
DU checks the directory. You don't clean up, not with DU and not with 3rd party "cleaner" apps.
You can do a Safe Boot, or try, and even run fsck -fy in Single User Mode in a pinch - the Safe Boot though you should try.
I would suspect the GPU. Beyond that, just 2008-itis that affects these 3,1 models more than any other. And yes SMC and NVRAM reset and remove all devices. Even slide out the disk drives and anything else. And press the power on button for 10 seconds while unplugged, to fully reset. NRAM is done from cold boot and the old 4-finger salute of P+R+CMD+OPT keys.

  • Mac Pro - Windows 7 - Apple Cinema Display

Hi -- after years of not installing Windows on a separate drive, I finally did it. The install went failrly well, wireless devices work in Windows 7. My remaining issue is that Windows 7 doesn't seem to recognize the Apple Cinema Display (ACD) with the Mini Display Port. If I switch to a different DVI monitor, the display seems fine. However, if I go back to the ACD, the display shakes upon boot up, and the resolution, screen size in off and a generic display is seen in the Control Panel. Sometimes, it does recognize the ACD, which is weird, but never on boot up.
Is the only solution running a DVI adaptor and not using the ACD with the Mini Display Port? When I first installed the BootCamp drivers, it seemed to work, but there were a few updates afterwards, and it seems that I lost whatever had stabilized the issue.
    Thanks!

There was someone complaining about using two VGA monitors on 2010 w/ ATI 5770.
There is an improved dual display support now in Windows 8. Windows 7 was always "where is my screen" on startup. The video port close to the motherboard seems to be A or primary that it looks for on startup.
I have 23" ACD (2006 unit) Mac Pro but always used GTX, no ATI card (well recently I was using Windows only and an ATI 6790 or something).
And of course you must have installed ATI (Windows own drivers are iffy or "okay" but not the best.
Apple drivers for Windows (aka "Boot Camp" 3.x or Lion's 4.01) include driver support for the ACD.
You say MDP and 4870 in profile, but I didn't think Apple's 4870 had one, and flashed PC cards always have trouble (unflashed 4870 would of course work as normal as can under Windows).
Rollback update of driver is one step. Run Driver Sweeper 3.2 and CCleaner (and clean the registry) to get the graphic driver installed and 'clean.'
Patch Tuesday can always affect a few systems and a problem but more likely a conflict with something else.
One at a time see if you can get new graphic driver to help.
Wtih the 5770 Apple tech note does mention not using adapters.
And don't allow Windows to provide gpu driver if it asks

  • Magic Mouse stutters when 27" Apple Cinema Display connected

I have a 2011 MacBook Pro and 27" Apple LED Cinema Display, and a Mighty Mouse. All purchased 2 weeks ago.
When I work with the 27" display connected, the Mighty Mouse's performance is intolerable. It jerks, stutters and jumps all over the place. it will work fine for a short period time (30 seconds) and then become jerky and stutter all over the place for 5 seconds.
This does not happen when the display is disconnected.
To ensure it wasn't a software issue, I used Boot Camp to run Windows 7. The problem is the same in Windows. Again, when I disconnect the display and use my laptop's screen, the problem goes away.
Some people have suggested that it may be interference from 2.4Ghz wireless networks and recommended to switch to 5Ghz. However, turning my router off did not help.
I tried positioning the mouse less than 2 inches away from the laptop, both in open & closed-lid mode. Again, the problem remains.
The laptop's trackpad always works fine, as does a wired Mighty Mouse.
    So, in summary:
*Is there known interference between the 27" Display and Bluetooth devices such as my Magic Mouse?*

    thv2011,
There are some known problems which other devices on the 2.4Ghz can affect. Here's the apple support article on the subject:

  • 2) 27" cinema displays differ in picture

I have two 27" Apple Cinema displays bought at the same time from the same Apple store. I use them with a Mac Pro that just received a Radeon 5770 video card. I was using two GT 120's. With the GT 120 cards the picture between the two monitors was dramatically different. Moving the monitor inputs made no difference.
Enter the 5770 video card. There is a difference between the pictures but it is much much less. The difference is so small that I think it can be "tuned out" but it seems the monitor settings are linked together so changing the setting affects both monitors. Additionally, I can't seem to find a way to change the brightness.
I would also like to delete all of the color settings out of the preferences panel except the default ones and I'm not sure how to do this.
Any thoughts / suggestions about this are appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Jim
P.S. If you're making a video card change and think it's time to replace the Internal Backup Battery (BR 2032) in your Mac Pro, this is the time. With the bottom GT 120 card removed, it's a snap to install a new battery.

You could use a dual-link DVI to Mini DisplayPort converter
    <http://www.atlona.com/Atlona-Dual-Link-DVI-to-Mini-DisplayPort-Converter-USB-Pow ered.html>
    <http://www.gefen.com/gefentv/gtvproduct.jsp?prod_id=9898>
    <http://www.kanexlive.com/c247dl>
but replacing the graphics card won't cost much more, and will give much better performance (and the ability to use three displays).
    <http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC742ZM/A/ati-radeon-hd-5770-graphics-upgrade- kit-for-mac-pro-(mid-2010)>
In any case, be sure to get the Mini DisplayPort version of the display.

The Thunderbolt version won't work with a Mac Pro.
