Magsafe: 2 Recessed Gold Sticks Rather Than 4?

About a week ago my Macbook lost the ability to charge while being connected.
I checked my Magsafe adapted and noticed that where it connects to the Macbook, on the Magsafe there are 4 thick gold "sticks" (for lack of a better term) with an extra thin gold one in the middle as well.
Well, I've just noticed that 2 of those gold sticks are now reccessed rather than all four on the same plane.
I'm curious as to if this is indeed the problem that is causing the lack of charge for my macbook, or if all magsafe adapters have 2 lower golden sticks and 2 at a higher level.
I hope this isn't confusing; I await any help. Thanks.

All 3 of my magsafe adapters are that way. It's normal.

Can I use a SD Card rather than a USB stick when using Lion Recovery Disk Assistant

I'm using a MB Pro 2010, can I use a SD Card in the SD Card slot rather than a USB stick when using Lion Recovery Disk Assistant. I would like to use the 16GB chip with a single 1GB partition so I can dump a bunch of other backup stuff into the same chipper.

Yes, you could certainly do that, provided you have a card reader or an SD card slot available on both Macs and what you are copying is smaller than the capacity of your SD card.
But that's an awfully slow way to transfer GB's of files. 32GB SD cards cost anywhere from about $20 to $90 and of course the cheaper cards will be the slowest cards. Also need to consider that your iPhoto, iTunes and especially iMovie libraries may be larger than your SD card's capacity, and there is no easy way to 'split' them to save partial libraries and reassemble them on your new Mac.
A better solution is an external hard drive connected via FW or USB2. Much faster and without the capacity limit of an SD card. For example, you could get a 500GB OWC Mercury Elite Pro mini drive (5400 rpm) for $115 and after you are done using it for file transfer it would be a nice backup drive. Or build your own with an OWC mini case and a 500GB WD Scorpio 7200 rpm drive for about $120. Both support eSATA, FW400/800 and USB2.
Or you could just network the two Macs together and use the Finder to transfer files that way. Cheap, fast, and it works.

Can I download Snow leopard/Lion rather than order hard copy delivery? Not finding in iTunes nor on apple website..

I currently have Mac OSx and looking to upgrade to Lion (sounds like I need to go through Snow Leopard upgrade first). Is there an easy way to simply download these upgrades rather than order via the mail? Any way to avoid updgrading two separate times and have the ability to go direct to the Lion upgrade?

You cannot download Snow Leopard. You have to buy it on disk.
Once you've installed that, and updated it to 10.6.8, you can download Lion from the App Store.
Apple also sells Lion on a USB stick, but I don't know if it is possible to install that on a disk with just Leopard.

Forcing Audition to copy media rather than reference

Hi all,
How do you force Ausition to copy media locally rather than reference it by default. So that when I drag a sound effect from my networked library on to a multitrack session it copies it, rather than referencing the original. By doing this I am safe to make modifications to the sound file and when playing back files they are playing back locally rather than over the network.
I know i can do this to individual files, but it's a pain. Ideally I want this to the default behaviour.

Unfortuantely the iterative nature of working in sound design makes this unworkable as I'm constantly adding and tweaking new sounds; I never know when I'm finished adding/swapping out sounds so I'd be constantly having to exprot the session. I guess I'll have to stick with what I'm currently doing which is to 'convert to unique copy' (or whatever it's called) each file that isn't copied over. It's just a bit of a drag to always have to worry about this when a simple check box in the settings would fix this.

How to print Cell Formula rather than its Result?

Hi,
I work with data that includes lots of multiple fractions, and print reports showing results of various calculations based on the fractions. The fractions themselves can be important, so I need to be able to display them when used in a formula.
For example, in one cell (cell A1) I need to enter "1/3 * 13/21"; I need to display this formula when I print. Cell A2 would contain a specific number, like "141.5". Cell A3 needs to calculate A1 * A2.
In order to provide a number that A3 can use, I need to enter "=1/3 * 13/21", but when printing this displays "206349". I can format A1 as text, but then A3 won't calculate it. I tried using "Value(A1)*Value(A2)" in A3, but it looks like Value will only accept a decimal number.
So, is there any way to format some cells in a sheet (but not all cells) to display the cell contents rather than the result? Or a way to enter a fraction as text and have another cell evaluate the fraction or formula?

So in other words, I only want the first cell in the row to print as text. My clients need to see the equation in the first cell, not its calculated result. But for each following cell, they need to see the result; if I print the functions and cell references, as in the 3rd example, my report won't make any sense at all to my clients.
Quattro Pro on Windows allowed me to do this easily. I switched to Mac and Excel 2008, and found a difficult workaround solution to accomplish this; but Excel is a dog of a program, with many bugs still. I'd much prefer to work with Numbers, but unless I can do something about the printing issue, I'll have to stick with Excel, or run Quattro under VMWare Fusion.

How to make web shortcuts use icon provided by website rather than default

I'm a new Mac user, and I find it hard to use web shortcuts on my desktop and dock, because when I drag them from my browser to there, they all get the at sign on a spring icon, rather than the default icon provided by the website, which shows up next to the URL in the browser. Is there some setting that will allow it to use and keep that icon when I drag shortcuts?

I guess it could be interpreted as a shame that you can not get the favicon to stick to the desktop, different anyway. As Thomas A Reed suggested above, the link itself can receive a custom icon.
The advantage of creating a folder is other associated +files, receipts and links+ can be included in the stack with the link itself.
It is a shame the PC with IE cannot add this functionality, for my purpose anyway.

Changing the inside of text to an image rather than colour

It's probably a simple answer so apologies in advance!
I have some text ( see attached photo)
How do I change the background of the text to an image, rather than being blue? I want it to be a picture of bacteria rather than blue. I have all the adobe software if I need to switch programmes to do it, but would rather stick to illustrator.

1. place your image
2. position your text on it, and make sure it is above it in the stack order (Object > Arrange > Bring to front)
3. select both text and image, and hit ctrl + 7 (or Object > Clipping Mask > Make)

Slideshow frame rate when sent to iDVD is 29.97 rather than 25 (PAL)

When I send a slideshow to iDVD, it appears as NTSC 29.97fps rather than the required 25fps I need. This results in jerky movements as the app (which is set to 25fps) plays the movie. Are there any settings to correct this which I don't seem to have found?

Check the iMovie 6 forum for tips to get your projects to stick in PAL. It's not an uncommon problem, but there are solutions that work. I just don't remember them at the moment. (perhaps you'll find them in Matti's page) You can also find tips for getting the best image quality out of iMovie. (ex: avoid Ken Burns, don't let iMovie render your photos - pull into iDVD and let it do all the rendering) However, to get the best visual quality take TD's advice and use a 3rd party app.
For my home projects, I use iMovie to compile and edit my video clips. I create my slideshows entirely in iDVD. I crop my photos to 16:9 and place them in an iPhoto album, so it's quick and simple to create the widescreen iDVD slideshow. There is no Ken Burns effect, but iDVD gives the largest image size and best resolution of all the iLife apps. For my family use, I find the quality to be satisfactory.

Copying a playlist onto USB drive rather than burning to CD

I've created a playlist of tracks which I want to load via USB stick into my car.
iTunes appears to only give the option of burning the playlist onto a CD or DVD.
Any ideas on how I can save the files direct to USB rather than creating a DVD and copying that to USB????

Drag the tracks from iTunes to the stick drive. This will put them on the drive in whatever format they are in iTunes. Not all car players play AAC format so you may need to convert them to mp3 in iTunes and then drag those files to the stick drive.
When you put them on the USB drive they won't be in playlist order. Your car player will likely play them in alphabetical order according to how the copied files are named. If you want a playlist you will have to read your car's manual because there isn't a standard for creating those for cars players. It may use m3u which iTunes can also create in the File > Export menu, or it may use something that is more Windows-ish since usually the manufacturers only cater to the larger Windows community.

How do I move multiple clips at once in the project rather than one a time?

I know how to cut and then paste to move one clip within the project to a new place within the project, but how do I move a group all at once rather than one at a time?

This did not help and that did not work. I had already tried that Holding down either the command key does "highlight" multiple items but then you cannot move those items to a new spot.

Or you can press choose the view from the views drop down in the print dialogue box.

I asked this question about two years ago! I'm surprised we still can't print a year calendar. I've been using an Apple Calendar program from 1996, which was fun because I could add icons, and frames, etc. I was using it up until last week when I installed Leopard. Gone is Classic and my calendar program along with it!
Another problem I've had with iCal is the inability to print it in portrait mode. There was a work around on these boards that worked, but doesn't now. Sigh
