Magsafe adaptor making a distinct high pitched buzz

What the title says. Buzz coming from the magsafe adaptor. Usually when i first turn the power on, the buzz will sort of "sizzle", like an uneven buzz, then even out to the distinct continous uniform buzz. Any ideas?
Cheers

Run, don't walk to your local Authorized Service Provider. In the interim, you may want to change the duck-head for the extension cable (or vice versa) and see if that makes a difference.

  • IPod making high pitched buzzing noise

I've had my iPod over two years now, maybe three but it's always worked and hasn't had any problems. The other day I connected it to a cheap second hand Pod station that a friend had been lent. The pod station wouldn't play my iPod and nothing much happened so I resolved that my iPod was just too old to work on it and took it back out again. When I tried to turn on my iPod afterwards it wouldn't do anything so I thought that the battery had probably just been drained out and it would be fine when I took it home and connected it to my computer.
However when I did so the iPod did not appear on the desktop or in iTunes and the screen remained blank. I kept trying but the same would continue to happen and I began to notice that now whenever I plug in the iPod a very high pitched buzzing noise comes from the iPod which scares me a little as it's so unusual. I have tried resetting and pretty much all of the suggested solutions on the apple site and in other discussions but none work. Nothing seems to work and the iPod does absolutely nothing. Is there anything at all that I can do or does this mean that my iPod has simply finally had it?
I wouldn't have thought that just a cheap Pod station would be enough to cause such a major problem with it.
Any help would be very much appreciated please!

If a sad iPod icon or an exclamation point and folder icon appears on your iPod’s screen, or with sounds of clicking or HD whirring, it is usually the sign of a hard drive problem and you have the power to do something about it now. Your silver bullet of resolving your iPod issue – is to restore your iPod to factory settings.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60983
If you're having trouble, try these steps at different levels one at a time until the issue is resolved. These steps will often whip your iPod back into shape.
Make sure you do all the following “TRYs”
    A. Try to wait 30 minutes while iPod is charging.
    B. Try another FireWire or USB through Dock Connector cable.
    C. Try another FireWire or USB port on your computer .
    D. Try to disconnect all devices from your computer's FireWire and USB ports.
    E. Try to download and install the latest version of iPod software and iTunes
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
For old and other versions of iPod updater for window you can get here
    http://www.ipodwizard.net/showthread.php?t=7369
    F. Try these five steps (known as the five Rs) and it would conquer most iPod issues.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
    G. Try to put the iPod into Disk Mode if it fails to appear on the desktop
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
If none of these steps address the issue, you may need to go to Intermediate level listed below in logical order. Check from the top of the lists to see if that is what keeping iPod from appearing on your computer in order for doing the Restore.
    Intermediate Level
    A. Try to connect your iPod with another computer with the iPod updater pre-installed.
    B. Still can’t see your iPod, put it in Disk Mode and connect with a computer, instead of doing a Restore on iPod Updater. Go and format the iPod instead.
    For Mac computer
    1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
    2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
    For Window computer
    Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
    Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
In case you do not manage to do a “Format” on a window computer, try to use some 3rd party disk utility software, e.g.“HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool”.

    C. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
    Tips
    a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iTunes 7.
    b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
    c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”

    Advance Level
    A. Diagnostic mode solution
If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
    iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". The scroll wheel will not function while in diagnostic mode. For further details on Diagnostic mode can be found at http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/
Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
    B. Format your iPod with a start disk
I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.
Consider setting up a mail-in repair for your iPod http://depot.info.apple.com/ipod/
Or visit your local Apple Retail Store http://www.apple.com/retail/
In case your iPod is no longer covered by the warranty and you want to find a second repairing company, you can try iPodResQ or ifixit at your own risk
    http://www.ipodresq.com/index.php
    http://www.ifixit.com/
    http://www.rapidrepair.com/shop/g4-ipod-parts.html
Just in case that you are at the following situation
    Your iPod warranty is expired
You don’t want to pay any service charges
You are prepared to buy a new one
You can’t accept the re-sell value of your broken iPod
Rather than leave your iPod as paper-weight or throw it away.
You can try the following, but again, only do it as your last resort and at your own risk.
Warning !!!! – It may or may not manage to solve your problem, and with a risk that you may further damage your iPod, which end up as an expensive paper weight or you need to pay more higher repairing cost. Therefore, please re-consider again whether you want to try the next level
    Last Resort Level
    1. . Disconnecting the Hard Drive and battery inside the iPod – Warning !! Your iPod warranty will be waived once you open the iPod.
In Hong Kong there are some electronic shops offering an iPod service for Sad iPod, the first thing they do is to open up the iPod’s case and disconnecting the battery and the Hard Drive from the main board of the iPod. Wait for 5-10 minutes and reconnecting them back. The reason behind which I can think of is to do a fully reset of a processor of the iPod. In case you want do it itself and you believe that you are good on fixing the electronics devices and have experience to deal with small bits of electronic parts, then you can read the following of how to open the iPod case for battery and HDD replacement (with Quicktimes)

2.Press the reset button on the Hard Drive inside the iPod – Suggestion from Kill8joy
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2438774#2438774
Have I tried these myself? No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case. Therefore, I agree with suggestion to have it fixed by a Pro.

I am not suggesting that you should follow as well, but just read them as your reference. You are the person to make the call.
Finally, I read a fair comments from dwb, regarding of slapping the back of the iPod multiple times
Quote “This has been discussed numerous times as a 'fix'. It does work, at least for a while. In fact I remember using the same basic trick to revive Seagate and Quantam drives back in the mid to late 1980's. Why these tiny hard drives go bad I don't know - could be the actuator gets stuck in place or misaligned. Could be the platter gets stuck or the motor gets stuck. 'Stiction' was a problem for drives back in the 80's. Unfortunately the fix can cause damage to the platter so we temporarily fix one problem by creating another. But I know of two instances where a little slap onto the table revived the iPods and they are still worked a year or more later.”UnQuote

Teakman lets make sure your device is clear as a whistle! There is not a known audio issue with the Droid Razr M so it appears this may be an hardware defect with the device. To make certain that's not an internal issue, I would recommend completing a Hard Reset http://vz.to/1kEchad .

  • High-pitched buzzing in all songs

Tonight I was ripping CD's onto iTunes and was, I thought, being successful. But when I tried to play a song that I had just ripped, there was this high-pitched buzzing noise. It was like that on basically all of the ones that I did after a certain point. Is there a way I can fix this without having to rip all my CD's again? Why did it do this?

No, not all of the songs have that in them. I ripped 3 cd's then after those the buzzing occured. I didn't install anything inbetween that. I'm thinking though that it had something to do with the one of the cd's that needed to have certain programs installed for it. I put it in and shut down the stuff that popped up. From what I remember the cd's I ripped after that are the only ones that are messing up. So I'm assuming that's what happened. If not then I have no idea. I haven't tried it again.

  • Satellite L850-1R4 - Freezing with high pitched buzzing sound

    Greetings.
I obtained this computer from my school, it was packed and not opened as far as I know(to my knowledge they didn't open 'em at least.) Around 5-6 times every day (Span of 6 hours at least) my computer freezes, with a very high pitched buzzing sound that sounds like a bloody drill.
I updated my drivers and everything, but this still occurs and I have to power restart the computer to be able to continue working/playing/watching anything.
    How can I solve this?
    Thank you and best regards.
    Berkcan S.

    > Furthermore If I take it to factory settings (which I tried some months back) It gives me further crashes, freezes and blue screens.
Sorry mate but for me it sounds like an hardware problem. BSOD can be caused due serious software issue (compatibility between driver and hardware) or hardware malfunction but setting the unit back to factory setting should not cause an software issues. Therefore I presume an hardware part is the troublemaker.
The common parts like HDD or RAM modules should be checked firstly following by motherboard, CPU, etc

  • W700 high pitched buzzing

Just recently updated all the drivers with the systems update, after reboot a high pitched buzzing started.  The pitch of the buzzing changes when I adjust the brigthness level on the monitor too.
Rolled back the driver for the graphics card and still had the buzzing sound, I am assuming its from the power managment driver update.  Anyone have the same problem?
Anyone know a link to the default power manager driver?

No, not all of the songs have that in them. I ripped 3 cd's then after those the buzzing occured. I didn't install anything inbetween that. • Faint high pitched 'buzzing' noise

Can't believe I've only had my iMac two days and already it's playing up.
After turning it on today I've had this constant buzzing noise coming from somewhere, it's really faint and I generally can't hear it with quiet music on.
It's that faint I'm thinking maybe it's always been like this? But I'm pretty sure it hasn't. I've restarted several times and the problem persists.
I'm thinking of just ringing Apple about it. Should I ring my local store or the Apple helpline?

If this is the whine that goes away if you set the screen to full brightness, it's a common problem with the new iMacs. Many people, including myself, have successfully convinced Apple to replace machines with this condition.
Unfortunately, however, I'm also not the only one to be shipped a replacement iMac only to find that the new one does the same thing. The problem is just that common.
My thread about this is here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2332490&tstart=0
There are definitely some new iMacs without the problem, so it's worth trying to get a replacement, though.

  • Strange high pitched buzz..

Since I updated the phone on Monday with the latest Sony release 5.0.2 Build Number 23.1.A.1.28 the phone suddenly omits a loud buzzing sound like an out of tune radio station.  It lasts about 2-3 seconds and then goes off by itself.  What is this all about and why are these updates causing SO MUCH damage to the phone?
I am really sick to death of having issues with this phone which I only received in March this year.  I should be able to rely on Sony updates NOT causing damage to the handset but seemingly not.

Try performing a system repair using PC Companion as this will often fix issues - This will factory reset your phone and erase all data so best to backup before you begin
Switch off your phone and unplug from Pc (Hold volume up and power for around 10 seconds)
Start PC Companion and select Support zone then Update my phone/tablet then in Blue Repair my phone/tablet and follow the on screen instructions - When prompted connect your phone still switched off holding volume down or back button - This should start the repair or reformat process
If you are using Windows 8/8.1 or a 64bit operating system then adjust the settings for PC Companion and run in compatibility mode and chose Windows 7 or XP

  • High-pitched buzzing sound

    hello
i just bought a macbook pro out of an apple store today and it has a buzzing sound coming from it..
i m very annoyed and disappointed..
can anybody tell me if i can fix that?
I was so happy to get the machine, and i m so disappointed now..

Don't be disappointed you got yourself a heck of a machine to enjoy. I would return it and get it exchanged.
I have had 3 MBP and none have ever done that unless i left a cd in the MBP. Just exchange it.
How many RPM is your HD? should be 7200 or so.

  • High-pitched buzz on MBP 15"

I have a 15 inch MacBook Pro with the "buzzing" noise mentionned for example on
    http://www.macintouch.com/reliability/macbooks.html
Does anybody know what Apple is doing to address this issue?
When I brought my MBP at my authorised Apple repair guy (to fix the start button), I mentioned this problem and he was like "never heard of this problem"...

I never used PhotoBooth -- Is there any indication that it is linked to the buzz?
I noticed though that the buzzing goes away when the screen brightness is set to either maximum or minimum.
Anyway, this seems like such a widespread problem that I would expect that Apple came up with an appropriate answer... Any chance that they did ?

  • X-Fi Titanium PCI-e making high pitch squeal on Windows 7 with HPET enabled

Two days ago, I tested an older Radeon 4800 to see if it still worked. Long story short, some how I screwed up my integrated sound (Realtek). I reinstalled Windows last night, and after several hours of hair pulling, still wasn't able to get it to properly play sound at all. I disabled the on board audio in the BIOS, installed my X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty Professional PCI-e I had sitting around, and finally had sound working again (through the X-Fi). Sound was fine using the default Windows drivers, however after installing the Creative drivers, it's constantly making a very high pitched squeal. The squeal doesn't change at all, and it's constant, if I had to guess I would say it's at the very or near the very end of my audible hearing. This was the same story when I first installed the X-Fi card when I first built the computer one and half years ago, which I eventually removed a few weeks later to simplify my build and stuck with the on board audio. Back then, I figured out a way to get rid and it involved disabling the High Precision Event Timer (HPET) in the BIOS. I did the same today and it removed the squeal, but I'm wondering if there's any way of getting rid of the squeal without disabling the HPET. What confuses me is why the Windows sound driver didn't squeal but the Creative one did. Windows 7 is fully up to date, as are the drivers.

When installing the Dolby and DTS connect packages, you need to right click each and choose to install them in VISTA compatibility mode. Then they install just fine.
As far as your driver issue.........
do a search for DRIVER SWEEPER from guru3d and that will uninstall your driver and hopefully put you back to a good reinstall. Also inside your driver folder you can look for utility called CTZapp that will uninstall all traces of that driver so that you can reinstall it properly.

  • High-Pitched Electronic sound

I'm a long-time Windows guy & I just received my replacement 17"MBP as the first one had a loose screen. I notice a high-pitched buzzing sound emanating from the upper left side of the laptop only when the power supply is plugged in. It is not very loud but the high-pitched frequency really stands out when the room is quiet. Is this normal? If I click the trackpad button, the sound goes away. I've researched this board but could not find the same situation. Tech Support says the MBP's are louder than prevous models and suggested I take it to an Apple Store (3 hoours away). Any thoughts?
    Thanks!

If you were to send the computer to Apple, they would do absolutely nothing to fix it. I've spoken to a product specialist on many occasions now, and they flat out refuse to acknowledge the fact that it is buggy.
I have even given the specialist many ways to eliminate the whine via software fixes (IE: Photobooth, Mirror Widget, Comic Life, Ect) and they still maintain it is 'within spec'.
What is disconcerting to me, is that if the issue is glaring people in the face (MacBook Plastic on the vents) they will openly admit to it, but if it is something they can spin as being 'spec', they will ignore it.

  • High Pitched Whining Sound from Macbook

We bought the new 13" Aluminum Macbook today. In getting it set up there have been some periodic times where it started making a very high pitched whining sound that I could hear but my wife could not.
The ability to hear these high end sounds go away as you get older.
Just wondering if this will need to be repaired / returned ? What do we do. I can't stand it!!

Phil is right of course. You should send/take it back and get a new one.
Is the whine coming from the hard drive?
With the easy to replace hard drive in the new MacBook you can easily swap out the hard drive in your current unit with the new unit. That saves you reinstalling programs and transferring data. However with a whine I would be leery about keeping the same hard drive.
