MagSafe cord melted... auch!

Hi folks,
The thin cord on my 60W MagSafe melted without me to notice it. So, when rolling-up the cord I touched the hot wiring... auch! Looking at it, I believe the isolation isn't really strong enough. This makes me not wanting to replace it with an identical MagSafe.

Does anyone know a better - more safe - power adapter that I can use with my MacBook?
Greetings,
Onnozele

Since we can't discuss Apple policy according to Terms of Use, I direct you to call AppleCare and discuss the matter directly with them:
http://www.apple.com/contact/phone_contacts.html
We can only have a technical discussion why these things may happen. We can't really ask when Apple will fix something. As for others having problems, those not having problems rarely have anything to report.

  • My Magsafe Also Melted

This is the second time my Magsafe has melted at the joint connecting the magnetic head to the cord. The first time it was replaced no questions asked, but now I am no longer under warranty and the people at the Apple store near me refused to help (and were quite content on being less than helpful...). It seems to me that this is a common problem and considering it first happened while I was under warranty and this is just a continuation of a problem, I should be given a new one. Especially given the fact that this is an obvious defect and frankly, a hazard. I was very disappointed with the way Apple handled it. I guess I'll keep trying to call them in hopes of getting someone who cares... but I'll probably just have to bite the bullet and shell out the cash for a new, expensive, power supply. Just a terrible job by Apple.

    Hi Julian,
    welcome to macbook forum.
Unfortunately if you are out of warranty, no matter what situation are, you still in the weak bargaining position. There for apple offer apple care so you can be at the winning position.
How long the second mag safe last before it melted, if you can prove that no matter how many magsafe they give, it will instantly melt right away, you might win the case.
But if you have been using it for quite sometime, apple can point that as user abuse, for debris or particle accumulate between magsafe and magsafe port on your macbook become indicator and short the magsafe current and generate heat that melt it.
IF you buy a new mag safe, I believe it also covered by apple warranty, for how long I honestly don't know (do check with them), and keep both side clean to prevent that incident happen again.

    Good Luck.

  • Fraying magsafe cord (4th already)

I  am really disappointed with Magsafe cord material. We just had a 4th broken one in our family – they have started fraying under 3 different mac users. All under different usage-types.
    * 1st was the T-type adapter which was bound to get broken unless your power source is always on the left-hand side of you.
    * 2nd–4th were the L-type ones which just started fraying. The last one (the one on the picture) was only used for a stationary macbook that was connected to a monitor 90% of the time and even if it wasn't, it was always run on battery juice. The adapter was connected exactly like noted on Apple's suggestions on how to reduce cable strain. Yet it still started fraying from 5 different spots and now it doesn't work anymore.
I have no incentive to pay yet another 80€ for a new adapter (because of the cord) that will start fraying under any use (just a matter of time). I feel rather encouraged to buy some 3rd party adapter that uses different materials for the cord. Feels much like the material Apple uses doesn't stand UV light as my workstation is right next to a window.
    Here's an image of it:

Then you have some very large bugs in your home that only come out at night and like bitting the cord or someone is Digging their finger nails into the cord when they are handling it. That does not just happen. Those are indentations and cuts and it seems like a lot of dirt, filth, collected on it. Again that doesn't just happen either unless someone or something is handling it with dirt on there hands or mouthing it making it moist to collect that filth.
Right as I said they are CUTS. Cuts only happen when something with a sharper edge come in contact with something softer. Splits and cracks can happen by bending something at to great an angle but not cuts that actually deform the surface. Which is what your image shows.

  • Macbook pro magsafe power adapter - cord melted

Has anyone had the cord on their power adapter burn or melt through? I've had my Macbook Pro for 3+ years and taken great care of it. I experienced the battery bulge issues and has two batteries replaced under AppleCare. I came home yesterday to find this:
    http://picasaweb.google.com/jdgrif/MacbookProPowerAdapter?feat=directlink
    Any ideas?
I realize I'm outside of my AppleCare now but I still find this alarming.
    Thanks.

    I would take MBP & Magsafe to your local Apple Store or AASP. Otherwise, see the following KB Articles;

  • Magsafe connected MELTED

Well, I was just sitting here with my Macbook Pro plugged in as usual, and then I saw the green light on the magsafe connector go out. I disconnected it from the MBP and to my surprise, it has turned into a liquid and burnt my hand. The plastic had melted!
I'm on 74% battery life right now and can't plug it in, so I need a quick solution. I can't find a support email anywhere to request help. There's no way i'm paying $80 for something that has malfunctioned this horribly AND burnt my hand. I need a replacement power adapter TOMORROW, and for no cost.
Is my best bet to go to my local Apple store? What would be my best option here?

In the U.S. you can't e-mail support. But you can call them at 1-800-APLCARE. They are available 7 days a week. Yes an Apple Store is a good bet. Some things to note about these adapters:
    1. You can't pull them by the cord. This may cause fraying.
    2. You shouldn't wrap the cable around the brick, as the cable bending at the brick can bend and fray.
    3. Don't let the cable bend more than 10 degrees at any joint
    4. Use the grounded connector (third prong) with a properly grounded outlet when connecting. Any hardware store will sell you a ground tester plug to make sure your outlet is properly connected.
    5. There is a clear plastic wrapping on some of the bricks which is best if removed.
    6. Pack the power brick cable in a zip lock bag to make sure no foreign elements get in the connector while in the bag.
Look at this article to make sure you aren't putting it on surfaces which might cause the machine to overheat:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=30612
And run the hardware test that came with the machine to see if it detects anything wrong:

  • Magsafe cord Extension?

I noticed the other day that my dog has gone and chewed the cord on my magsafe power supply. The damaged area is on the extension piece of cord that can be swapped onto the actual power supply in order to extend the cords length. Is it possible to purchase just this piece of cord as apposed to completely new power supply?

yaume is right you can not purchase the extension cord alone.
however there are some options you can make.
    1. post on the net for those who got their magsafe adapter burned maybe they would be willing to sell the extension cord only. (or perhaps give it free)
    2. get an electrical tape and blade and fix the chewed part, though it would not look nice it can still be used. (if you like extra wires to make the cord longer)

  • Sliced my MagSafe Cord

Cut my 60W MagSafe power adaptor cord on accident today. Can anyone tell me if it can be spliced back together, and if so, how??
    Thanks!
    Bryan

I easily repaired by MacBook AC adaptor. Just cut the ends clean, strip back the insulation, attach the inner wire firmly together and carefully tape (I used shrink warp electrical tube), then connect the outer "mesh" (I split it into two and attached the two new "wires" together, and again tape carefully.
It is really just connecting the inner wires together and taping and then the outer mesh wires together and again taping. Make sure it is strong so it cannot pull apart. It looks "funny" because one wire is mesh but it just two wires that need to be connected. I understand the outer mesh is to avoid interference.

  • Charger Cord Melting

I got an iPhone 3Gs a couple of weeks. I normally charge it by using the included USB cord connected to the AC plug that also came in the box. 2 days ago I noticed that the plug was melted where it connects to the bottom of the phone. The plastic had actually melted back and turned brown.
I connected another cord that I have and it has worked well since, but seeing that was a little disconcerting. 2 things I am wondering:
    1. Has anyone else had a problem with this happening? and,
    2. Will the Apple Store replace the melted USB cable?

Actually, the day I posted that issue an Apple rep contacted me, arranged an appointment at the Genius Bar for the next day and they did exactly that. They also ran tests on my phone and said it was fine. Good service!
Still don't know why, but at least they resolved it quickly.

  • Magsafe connector melt down

Anybody seen this before? I came home and found that magsafe connector (the side on the cable) was melted. The middle pins are gone but the macbook pro seems to be OK.

Apple support responded very well (thanks Klaas) and fast. Before I called our local Apple support line, the dutch engineers were already contacted by their US collegues (who saw the pics) to inquire if I already called in. I'm getting a new Macbook asap and I will return my current one.
They could not tell me anything on the cause and I wonder if I'll ever know. This leaves me with one-month newer macbook, some days of frustration, reinstalling some software and some rare macro shots.

  • Ethernet Cord Melted

After getting a DOA MacBook the first time my replacement has been perfect and I love it. It does get hot when it is sitting on my bed. The ethernet cord was underneath my MacBook and it melted. It still works fine though. Anyone else have this happen?

I have not had it happen, but it doesn't suprise me. The bottom can get pretty hot and those cables are covered in a soft plastic, so they are bound to melt.
I would not use it on the bed and certainly would make sure that nothing was underneath it.

  • Magsafe Cord separated at brick and fraying

I have a 2008 MBP and have taken great care while using it. A year ago the rubber insulation started separating from the brick and I was told by a "Genius" that this was fine, not a reason to invoke Applecare. Well now the cord is further separated and wires are beginning to fray and now my local authorized store is saying it's accidental abuse and that Apple won't cover it. I've wrapped some electrical tape on it, but I'm wondering if this is something that should be covered by Applecare. Has anyone had any simil

Call AC & tell them your situation.  If you have AC it is better to call them first prior to just walking into an Apple Store w/your problem.  Make sure you get a case #.
You should have gotten a FREE replacement under warranty the first time around.

  • Why is it (and how is it possible) that you guys don't have any retractable magsafe power cords (or at least an accessory that would turn normal magsafe chargers into a retractable unit)? (Or do you?)

Way, way back it was cool that you could wrap the smaller cord around those retractable clips.  However, even that has grown annoying.
For those of us who use the longer attachment (for which there isn't even a wrapping solution) dealing with the cords is time consuming (and basically impossible to do in such a way that it can withstand any real traveling).
At least one of the reasons there is no retractable cord option is that other companies can't design one themselves without violating your intellectual property rights.  That said, Apple should really be the ones to tackle this particular cord-annoyance (all the groundwork for the design has already been done for you guys--all you'd have to do is tweak it to fit the specifics of your magsafe cords, and *voila*, fantastically manageable, clean, well-designed, and highly portable power cord for us all.
Suddenly: champagne would fall from the heavens, doors would open, velvet ropes would part, world peace, end to hunger....you get the idea.
It seems like this is the only place to give suggestions for things such as this...am I missing something?

    Welcome Jessie!
Here's how to get your comment to someone working in Apple product development:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/macbookpro.html
That said, Apple shipped retractable cord chargers in the early PowerBook days. From talking to people who owned them, I get the impression that the constant in/out action caused many to fail prematurely. I suspect Apple abandoned them for a reason.

  • Magsafe 2 - Cord shorted last night while we slept.

I woke up last night to a weird odor. Our dog was walking around which is unusual in the middle of the night. I took a look around the house and didn't notice anything out of the ordinary.
When I woke up this morning at 5:00am the smell had disapated. I went to grab my macbook air and noticed the power light was not on, however the computer was fully charged. Under further investigation I found that the MagSafe cord coming from the power block had been severed. The outer rubber/bendible plastic protective sheething is now split, the tiny wires are blackened, and there is a bit of dark dirty orange discolorisation where the wire leads into the power block.
I keep my mac and powercord in great condition. The computer is charged (100%), however when I plug it back in the light does not come on and the computer does not charge. My guess is that something was weak in the area on the cord and it shorted, that or poor manufacturing. My cord and brick are kept clean so I do not believe I am at fault.
    What should I do?
    I still have warranty.

Thanks Ogelthorpe. I have scheduled an appointment. I was wondering how quickly ths can be fixed, as I use my Air for travel, work, and at home. I'm out of time to allow it to be sent in as I'm leaving my state to go to another for my wedding tomorrow. I didn't want to take it in to the Mac store and find out that I had waisted my time.

  • Magsafe Melted!

Hi guys. On August 25, 2011 I purchased a MacBook Pro from Amazon. Everything with my Mac was fine until magsafe started melting. However it is still functional and I am using it because I have to. I am a college student and this is the only computer I have. I know it is not safe but how can I handle the assignments without a computer. Whatever, I am sure I did not do anything wrong!.Today I checked this issue on the internet and I saw that many other people had suffered from the same problem. It is obvious that there is something wrong with the Magsafe. My coverage expired about 15 days ago and I do not know what to do now.

I went to the Apple Store and they let me purchase AppleCare even though my Mac was about 5 days out of warranty so they may let you do this as well
Alternatively you will have to buy a new MagSafe adapter although this will not fix/prevent the issue if it was a problem with the computer/external source
