Magsafe Cord separated at brick and fraying

I have a 2008 MBP and have taken great care while using it. A year ago the rubber insulation started separating from the brick and I was told by a "Genius" that this was fine, not a reason to invoke Applecare. Well now the cord is further separated and wires are beginning to fray and now my local authorized store is saying it's accidental abuse and that Apple won't cover it. I've wrapped some electrical tape on it, but I'm wondering if this is something that should be covered by Applecare. Has anyone had any simil

Call AC & tell them your situation.  If you have AC it is better to call them first prior to just walking into an Apple Store w/your problem.  Make sure you get a case #.
You should have gotten a FREE replacement under warranty the first time around.

  • Fraying magsafe cord (4th already)

    I  am really disappointed with Magsafe cord material. We just had a 4th broken one in our family – they have started fraying under 3 different mac users. All under different usage-types.
    * 1st was the T-type adapter which was bound to get broken unless your power source is always on the left-hand side of you.
    * 2nd–4th were the L-type ones which just started fraying. The last one (the one on the picture) was only used for a stationary macbook that was connected to a monitor 90% of the time and even if it wasn't, it was always run on battery juice. The adapter was connected exactly like noted on Apple's suggestions on how to reduce cable strain. Yet it still started fraying from 5 different spots and now it doesn't work anymore.
    I have no incentive to pay yet another 80€ for a new adapter (because of the cord) that will start fraying under any use (just a matter of time). I feel rather encouraged to buy some 3rd party adapter that uses different materials for the cord. Feels much like the material Apple uses doesn't stand UV light as my workstation is right next to a window.
    Here's an image of it:

    Then you have some very large bugs in your home that only come out at night and like bitting the cord or someone is Digging their finger nails into the cord when they are handling it. That does not just happen. Those are indentations and cuts and it seems like a lot of dirt, filth, collected on it. Again that doesn't just happen either unless someone or something is handling it with dirt on there hands or mouthing it making it moist to collect that filth.
    Right as I said they are CUTS. Cuts only happen when something with a sharper edge come in contact with something softer. Splits and cracks can happen by bending something at to great an angle but not cuts that actually deform the surface. Which is what your image shows.

    I have a Power Mac G4 double mirrored model and everytime I shut it off it will not go on when I hit the power on/off button again. However, if I unplug and plug in the power cord it boots fine and everything is OK. The PMU and logic board have been reset. Sometimes my Mac goes on just by pressing the power on button but most times I have to pull the power cord and put it back in. Any ideas or help out there for this? Could it be a failing power supply? Apple Care says that this model is obsolete so there is no help from there. John

    Hi John,
    That's often a sign of a bsad Capacitor in the Power Supply, but...
    Might be time to replace the PRAM Battery, 4 years is close to their lifespan, far less if ever without AC power, & can cause strange startup problems...

  • ITunes had an error while trying to update my iPhone 6+ and now the phone is bricked (and iTunes is not detecting it)

    So I tried Installing iOS 8.3 onto my iPhone 6+, updated iTunes to the latest version, 12.1.2, downloaded the update for the phone, connected my phone - it detected fine like it always does. When I tried installing, it went to about halfway or so and then iTunes said there was a problem updating the phone.
    The phone icon disappeared from iTunes and when I checked the phone it was giving the blank screen. I tried turning it off and on again... It showed the apple logo, and then the connect to itunes icon, but iTunes is not detecting it.
    Even if I take it out and put it back in again, even with the hard reset holding the home and power buttons. I'm running Windows 8.1. So far I've tried the hard reset, cleaning the connector pins, switching to a a different USB port, reinstalling iTunes, checking to see if the Apple Mobile Device software is up to date, even using a previous restore point in windows.
    The device makes a noise when it gets plugged in, indicating that it's being detected by the computer, but iTunes... nothing. And my phone is stuck on showing the connect to iTunes picture and it's bricked and unusable and I'm wondering why I even bothered with this stupid update.

    Most of the recent updates showed the connect to iTunes screen for a short time. But if the update was done with the iOS device connected to the computer running iTunes, the Connect to iTunes screen appeared only briefly then the update completed. If your iPhone didn't complete the update you will have to put the iPhone into Recovery Mode. Follow the steps very carefully in the link below. You might have to try several times to get your phone into Recovery Mode.

  • I thought that I was updating my phone...but it went into Recovery mode with the USB cord pointing to itunes and music notes in a circle. How can I get my Iphone 4 back to working without losing my data? I tried turning the phone off and it is uplugged.

    My iphone 4 is stuck on the lock screen with the USB cord pointing to itunes and music notes. I thought I was updating the phone for itunes but it is now teetering on the Recovery Mode. I do not want to lose my data, etc. Can someone explain how I can get my phone back? Apple support is not helpful.

    Your phone is in recovery mode.  All data on it are already lost.  You must connect your phone to your computer and restore through iTunes.

    It's your content, under your control.
    If you output as an .ibooks file, and you want to sell it, the store is the only outlet, otherwise, you can do as you wish.

  • Apple MagSafe Airline Adapter for MacBook and MacBook Pro

    Does the Apple MagSafe Airline Adapter for MacBook and MacBook Pro work in cars to in the cigerete lighter and how does it work on a airoplane cause in airoplanes there is only a mike connection thats about it ?

    This is an alternative solution that works great for me. I always carry a small and lightweight DC to AC converter with me in my case when I'm on the road. It's a Wagan Tech Smart AC 100 USB that I picked up at Costco for under 20 bucks. 100 watt capability and allows me to use all my electronics and chargers on the road. I can use it to charge the cellphone, laptop, ipod, etc.
    Even includes a USB port on the side for charging USB based products and also includes the aircraft adaptor (and of course a cigarette lighter adaptor) and everything fits into a small cloth bag (included).
    http://www.wagan.com/htmls/detail-2382.html
    The link is for the newer 120 watt version but it looks identical otherwise. If you don't have access to Costco then check the link provided for either direct purchase or the availability of other resellers. There's a "where to buy" tab at the top of the screen. Cheers!
    P.S. I just noticed that you are from the U.K. I'm sure this will still work as your MacBook charger should autoswitch down to 110v input, you'll just need to make sure you have the North American plug installed. If not, I'm sure there are similiar DC to AC adaptors available in the U.K. Hope that helps!

    I was wondering, is there an application I can download from the App Store that allows me to plug in a USB cord from my Iphone and print from any printer?

    Sorry but no. iOS does not support connecting a printer via USB, only via WiFi, and without such support there's no way a developer can build an app to provide such capability.

    This sounds to me like a hardware issue. Take it to an Apple Store or Apple authorized repair service.

    Our application uses WPF.
    One of request is make the DataGrid column separator and row separator more wide and use different color and remove original black separator of rows and columns.
    Which template we need to modify to make it? Thx!

    Hi Magnus,
    Thanks for replying our question and provide your suggestions!
    Now we know modify both HorizontalGridLinesBrush and VerticalGridLinesBrush we can change the DataGrid cell separator color.
    Following your suggested, we modify the DataGridCell as following:
    <Style x:Key="Body_Content_DataGrid_Centering"
    TargetType="{x:Type DataGridCell}">
    <Setter Property="Padding" Value="2,0" />
    <Setter Property="Template">
    <Setter.Value>
    <ControlTemplate TargetType="{x:Type DataGridCell}">
    <Border BorderThickness="2" BorderBrush="{StaticResource PageBorderBackground}" Margin="-1">
    <Grid Background="{TemplateBinding Background}" VerticalAlignment="Center" Height="42">
    <ContentPresenter VerticalAlignment="Center"/>
    </Grid>
    </Border>
    </ControlTemplate>
    </Setter.Value>
    </Setter>
    </Style>
    <Style x:Key="DataGridStyle1" TargetType="{x:Type DataGrid}">
    <Setter Property="HorizontalGridLinesBrush" Value="{x:Null}"/>
    <Setter Property="VerticalGridLinesBrush" Value="{x:Null}"/>

    Just looked at the warranty information with an earlier version power adapter (one for PowerBooks) and it is one year.  That seems to still be the standard Apple warranty for Apple branded accessories.
    Call Apple, go to an Apple store or go online and get it replaced.
