Magsafe Problems

I have a mid-2010 MacBook 13" White Unibody and it's less than a year old; In the past couple of days I've been noticing some slightly worrying changes in my magsafe. It appears that in some positions it will refuse to charge my MacBook, I noticed some grot in the adapter and proceeded to carefully remove it as instructed by the troubleshooting page provided by Apple. Quite strangely, it appears to charge when there's a kink in the cable, it also moves around a lot within the adapter and fear that it is the Mac not the cable and will gradually deteriorate. Another worrying change is that when it is charging it generates a lot of heat... so much so that last night it caused the rubber bottom to warp and I have had to order a new rubber bottom via the replacement scheme provided by Apple. All other forums I have read haven't quite been able to put my mind to rest, does anyone know of what's wrong with my Macbook and how I could go about fixing it? Perhaps a new Magsafe cable?

I've come across this before with the odd Apple rep. You have to expain to them that you do not need the complimentary telephone support but a hardware repair. You have a 12 month hardware warranty and faulty hardware to report not a support question.
If they insist on not helping try another call to a different rep and then move on to Customer Relations
Apple define Complimentary Support here;

Best of luck.

  • 60W Magsafe Problem

I've gone over the forums and the like but cant seem to find someone with the same problem.
it charges just fine but if i move the cord leading into the T connector around it will go from orange/green depending on charge state to a pale/unlit green then about 5 seconds later it goes back to normal but never stops charging.
my guess was a connection to the lights come off/loose since theres not been a problem with the charge cycle

I would never take anything to Best Buy to be checked, but suit yourself. It sounds as though the DC cord may be frayed where it meets the plug. This happens when the cord is jerked out of the MagSafe port or is often disconnected improperly.

  • Magsafe Problem

    Hi all,
Currently I'm facing a problem with the Magsafe adapter. The adapter stopped working, no light, does not charge, wires are slightly visible near the magnetic thingy, and once I even heard a "sizzling" sound from it. I've been using it since I first bought my Macbook (white, late 2006), and only encountered this problem now. My question is related to the 'replacement' that Apple is providing stated in this Troubleshooting article: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1713
I'm in Singapore, I inquire with the (Asia) Apple hotline abt the article, and they cfm that I could bring my adapter for evaluation before they can change it, BUT my local service center refuse to look at it, stating that they never heard of such support. Unfortunate the hotline is already close for the day, and since I only made an enquiry, I didn't really ask for case number.
While waiting for Monday to come for me to call the hotline again, I'm just wondering if this support is only available for US/Canada customers? Any kind soul knows about this? Thanks in advance =)

not sure if it's limited to US only, but I had similar issues with my old out of warranty powerbook g4. the wires were showing, sparks flew, and it smoked up. I called applecare up and they sent me a new because it's a fire hazard even though it's been out of warranty for 3 years. call them up and explain the issue with the service center, i'm sure they can help you somehow.

  • Another Magsafe Problem

Hello everyone! I am a life-long Apple fan and Mac user and I like to think that I have a very good understanding of the software aspect of the computers. Yesterday, however I encountered a problem that has to do with hardware, so I'm hoping I'll find some help here.
As I was packing up my computer for my trip back to school (I was home for Thanksgiving) I noticed that my power cord was broken. Now I had been reading the discussions about 'melting cords' and I don't think my cord had melted. The wires were visible where the cord meets the white adaptor - not at the end where the cord connects to the computer. I promptly unplugged it and covered the exposed wires in electrical tape. I ordered a new one off the web immediately because A) I don't live anywhere near an Apple Store and B) I figured that due to the damage, it was probably from my own use and transportation. It's going to take 3-6 weeks to get to me.
So here is my question: I am very careful with it, it is only plugged in when my computer is running low on batteries and I only leave it plugged in while it is charging. Is this the right thing to be doing? I can't stop using my computer because I am a student and all my school stuff is on my computer (notes, essays etc.) I am noticing that when the computer says it is all charged, the yellow light does not change back to green, but instead, stays yellow. This is probably due to the faulty wires, yes?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated and sorry for the length!
    Pam

Here is an article on power adapters you might find helpful:
How to keep power adapters from fraying:
    http://www.macmaps.com/frayguide.html
As for the one you have, I think you can continue to use it if you are careful and watch that nothing gets hot. The cord is designed to be thin and light and flexible, and consequently it is more fragile and easily damaged than people realize. The end where the cord connect to the brick and to the computer are particularly vulnerable.
As for the amber light staying amber and never turning green, this is odd. But mine will sometimes be amber even if the battery is fully charged. It makes me wonder how accurate the percentage in the menu bar is, as it seems to vary by a couple of percentage points. So it might actually still be charging a little bit, but I don't really know.
I think there actually have been some power adapters with manufacturing flaws. If you are under warranty and think that might be the case, you could call Apple and ask about it and maybe sent the old one to them after the new one arrives. It's a pretty big grey area, but if they thought it was a manufacturing flaw, you might be able to get a free replacement, in which case they would refund the purchase price of the new one you ordered.
    Good luck!

  • Magsafe problems and apple care

    Hello folks,
It seems like my Magsafe power adapter has finally kicked the bucket. I noticed that the portion of cord nearest to the brick that gets plugged into the wall started melting and frayed wires became visible in the exposed jumble of internal stuff. The area where is melting/fraying occurred is also slightly (ever so slightly) brown. I have apple care on my mac book pro, are these kind of things covered by warranty?
Also I have discontinued using the adapter and am running only on battery power (two hours left!)

    Folks,
This is just a follow-up. I took my Macbook Pro and frazzled/melted Magsafe connector to my nearest Apple Store, which happens to be in Shibuya Tokyo. They exchanged it for a new one, almost no questions asked. Except the clerk did ask if I was "injured" by the melting. Apple care, best warranty ever, even works overseas!
Oh and it seems like wrapping the cord of the Magsafe may contibute to the melt downs. According to the clerk, I mean Genius' explanation one shouldnt wrap the cord around the Magsafe when stowing it. Hmm....

  • Computer Shutting Down and Magsafe not working?

Hey guys my computer is a MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2010) and i have had Magsafe issues with it since 6 months after i bought it. I had it sent in to apple and they said that they had replaced the magsafe within the computer (i am assuming that they replaced the magsafe board). Recently my computer has not been recognizing any connection when the magsafe is plugged in. No lights and the battery will not charge. It takes several tries +20 to get it to recognize the magsafe and start charging. The adapter is NOT the problem and neither is the battery. I have also already performed a System Management Controller reset (SMC) as the symptoms seemed to follow this common problem. This has not fixed it. Now my computer is shutting down randomly (it seems to do this when under light to medium cpu load or when moving) however, this is hard to tell as it has only happened three times. The computer only seems to shut down when the magsafe is connected and recognized (either red or green light). When it shuts down i can hear the HDD needle "park" rather abruptly/loud as an audible CLICK can be heard. Upon reboot, the computer will again refuse to recognize that the magsafe is plugged in. Again, no lights on the magsafe connector, and the battery will not charge. This issue could brick my macbook unless i fix it soon. Please any help??? I really hope that nothing is wrong with the logicboard as they can run upwards of $600 to replace. PLEASE HELP MEH!!!
Some additional background: I had sent in my macbook to apple 3 times already through futureshop while under warranty. The problem was that the magsafe only seemed to work while plugged in with the cord running away from the user. They sent it back twice while only swapping chargers... of which i knew there was no issue with. The same magsafe problem was there. The third time is when they finally swapped out the magsafe in the computer. My one year warranty is now over and it has been about 8 months since i got my computer back since being repaired last time. I have no applecare warranty. Is there any way that this could be fixed under warranty??? Is there some kind of apple replacement warranty if something has been sent in so many times with the same problem??? Thanks and sorry for so much writing...

    Hi there
I just posted a quite similar issue today.
My solution was to simply run Disc utility and see whether it finds any problems/errors. It did find an error and after booting to Recovery partition and running Disc utility from there, I let it repair the volume.
Until now, no more random crashes on moving.
    Hope this helps you too

  • Magsafe Middle pin stuck down (small one) - how can I fix this?

I have a classic magsafe problem - the adapter will power the computer with no problems at all but the battery doesn't charge and the LED doesn't come on (or comes on incredibly faintly).
After hearing theories of anything from a dead battery to a banjaxed logic board, I tested it with another magsafe and the battery charged happily, while my magsafe refused to charge another Macbook (but powered it fine).
Looking closely, the middle pin (the tiny one) is stuck inside the adapter itself and does not return when the adapter is removed. This appears to be the reason for the adapter's failure to charge my battery.
I've always been an optimistic type and I simply refuse to accept that something as simple as a jammed pin would require a replacement or repair. Surely there is some way to fix this myself? I tried Apple's advice about moving it from side to side but as it's the tiny pin this is very difficult, I think their guide is designed with the larger pins on the left or right in mind.
Does anyone have any experience and / or advice on this?
My mind is open to the possibility that even if I free the pin, the spring behind it might be gone in which case it will continue to get "stuck". But it's worth a try.
I'm not being cheap by the way, but I only bought this adapter at the end of 2010 and to be honest I've had this same macbook for 4 years ang gone through about 7 magsafes. As adapters go, they are really, really filmsy! The most common problem I've had with them is melting holes in the flex which ends up burning through the actual wire, both disabling the charger and endangering my general wellbeing !
So what do people advise? Could I fix this at home without a massive hullaballo? I'm thinking of trying different magnets on it later on to see if any of them will pull the pin free but considering the power socket itself is magnetic I don't have much hope for that!

You need to make sure you use only one spelling for the band, and use Artist, Album Artist, Sort Artist & Sort Album Artist consistently across all their tracks. See my article on Grouping Tracks Into Albums for more.

Sounds like you need a #1SMC Reset

Disconnect other non-Apple and external hardware except (if applicable) a mouse and keyboard until your finished repairing your machine.
Problems solved: Fans blowing with no activity, machine is not booting, power button pressed and nothing happens, problems with indicators, Magsafe has wrong lights, battery is not charging, monitor and graphics issues etc.  If the battery is not charged (from like letting it sleep too long), let the Mac charge up awhile afterwards.
Will not hurt the machine resetting if it's not broken.

  • Macbook adapter not working

    Hi Apple Experts,
My Macbook Pro laptop charger stopped working after it was lying on the floor and my room filled with water due to water logging in the pipes in the bathroom adjacent to my room.
I tried drying the charger with a hair dryer but it is not working even after that.
Is there any way I can fix this? I have my study material in my MacBook and I have my exams tomorrow. If I dont get this going, I will fail in my exams.
Please suggest how can I get it going?
    Thanks,

  • 2 vs 2.16 Ghz

I'm brand new to Apple and in the next week or so am going to purchase my Macbook Pro. I was wondering how significant the performance difference would be between the 2 Ghz and 2.16 Ghz processors and if it's worth the money. I'm excited to finally be entering the Mac realm and to begin creating and exploring on my Macbook. Are there any things I should be weary of going into this? I've heard there are some heat issues, magsafe problems, RAM issues, etc. Any and all knowledge and advice would be greatly appreciated by this novice.

well the 2.16 works out to be about 8% faster, is that worth the extra cash for you? for me it is bacause the CPU isn't upgradable so you need all the speed you can get
as for the problems, the heat issues seem to be (mostly) gone, but you should know that it is a laptop that is designed to run very hot, to hot for some people, and the metal case dosen't help
as for magsafe and RAM, i have seen very few problems with either, but RAM can easily get replaced
other problems, are a few arrive with dead airport that cause crashes, this requires a logic board replacement (i had one of these, and this seems much more common then bad RAM), also most whine to some degree, and you will have a very hard time trying to get that fixed as apple says its within spec, its a high pitch noise, that is quite and appears when idle, it annoys some people, but not others

  • Can anyone recommend

Hello everyone can anyone recommend a good place to get a replacement power supply for my mid 2009 15-inch macbook pro. It is starting to run really hot.

Did you try taking it (and the machine) into Apple?, they like to know what goes wrong with these things and sometimes gives a free replacement.

  • 2012 Macbook Pro wont start or charge

So my macbook pro 13in was around 20% before i went to work then when i came back to it, The Macbook pro would not start and so i pluged it in and the charger light flickerd from green to amber back and forth. I then tried my charger for my older 2009 Macbook White polycarbenite and when i used that ones charger the light just stayed off but i did know that ones charger did work with the Pro. My guess is the logic board is fried some how or the battery has faild but my guess would be that it would still be able to start even with a bad battery. The Mac will not make the start up sound or the led trun on.. on the frount of the computer.
    Thanks for your help

Connect the charger that came with the machine to a good power source with not a lot of other items on the same power line from the circuit breaker.
Connect it to the Mac and perform a SMC Reset here and let it charge up for a few hours or overnight before using it.

  • MBP not charging suddenly

2007 Aluminium body MBP, 2.16 GHz core duo, 2GB RAM
Suddenly out of nowhere my MBP has stopped charging.  Battery is less than a year old, Magsafe works fine on another Macbook.  All has been working fine today.  I was using my MBP on the train home, putting it to sleep a few times while I switched trains and walked home.  Then I got home, and it had shut itself down despite having battery power left.  Started it up fine.
Now I tried plug the Magsafe in to charge it and the light on the Magsafe went green for about 1 second then off.  First thought was, it's a battery problem, but it's not working even with the battery out.  Then I thought, it's a Magsafe problem, but the Magsafe works in another computer fine.  I cleaned out my Magsafe connection so it's not that.
Tried SMC reset several times.  No change.
Any ideas what it could be?  Logic board?

I have spent the last week or so trying to get my MBP running again, and I have succeeded, but only for the short term.
I tried replacing the battery, this didn't work at all, the MBP didn't even boot up from a new, charged battery.
A brief bit of research led me to understand it would be either the magsafe left I/O board, the power cable that connects to the logic board, or the logic board itself, and that I should investigate in that order.
So, I got a left I/O board and replaced it using this guide:  https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/MacBook+Pro+15-Inch+Core+Duo+Model+A1150+Left+I-O+B oard+Replacement/504
When I put the Magsafe in, the light came on but after about 4 seconds I heard fizzing and a burning smell and then a tiny puff of smoke.  Upon examination the replacement I/O board had blown a circuit right above the headphone jack.  I decided that this was a duff I/O board and just bad luck.  Though, in reality, I have no idea whether this was a consequence of a different or bigger issue, and no idea whether this incident led to any damage on the logic board.
I got another left I/O board and repeated the process.  This time, same thing, except that the fizzing and burning seemed to be definitely located around the logic board.  The power was not left in for very long, but my heart was sinking all the same.  I took the logic board out using this guide: https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/MacBook+Pro+15-Inch+Core+Duo+Model+A1150+Logic+Boar d+Replacement/498  and took a look at it.  I noticed that there was one spot which looked like charring but not certain.
My next step was to replace the multicoloured power/battery cable that connects the I/O and logic board.  I did this, but I don't think it made a difference as again I had some fizzing, but then it stopped, and the Magsafe stayed on, and the battery started charging.  However, I was keen to rexamine the logic board so I took it out and noticed that the charring looked worse.  I took to see how bad it was by trying to wipe it off, and as I did that one of the components with the charring just dropped off.  I don't know what the component is, so have included a picture here so that somebody might help me ID it:
    http://postimg.org/image/5g3gxf3el/
I have a tiny bit of hope that because there are three of these components in a row, that if one goes down the other two might take the load... probably doesn't work like that!
Once this component came off, I cleared up the charring and put the logic board back in and connected it to the power board.  At this point I ran power through the machine to see how the logic board behaved.  No obvious burning, BUT it got very hot very quickly.  My question at this point is, did it get hot because I didn't have it plugged up to everything?  If that makes sense?
Anyway.  I put everything back in place mostly because I had reached the end of what I could do with it, I think.  I put the Magsafe in place and the machine booted up automatically.  All good.  I shut it down and let the battery charge for ten minutes.  Again, I noticed that the logic board was getting warm, even when powered down, and not just because it was charging, but not as hot as it got the first time.
With the keyboard back in place and the casing screwed back together, I can now run my MBP seemingly as normal.  I cannot tell whether it is any hotter than usual but I am running my fans at high RPM to be sure, and registering a temperature of around 50 degrees C.  I also am going to go back in and reapply some new thermal paste to the heatsinks when it arrives.
So, long story short, my MBP is running again, but with a new I/O board, new power/battery cable, and without a tiny component (to be ID'd) from the logic board and probably at a high temperature.   I have backed up and now just keeping an eye on it, waiting for an inevitable failure!
(I took my MBP and story to the genius bar this morning and as expected, the guy just informed me that my logic board sounds like it's dead or dying and I should invest in a new Mac...)
Next thing, my battery is saying Replace Soon, which I am not thrilled about given it's 14 months old.  Here's the read out.  Does this make sense?
