MagSafe so so

MagSafe 1 60W A1344 is not working, then I let it seat for a while and it works again then fails again, then works again?

Check the connection on the MBP and the charger.  The charger connection pins are spring loaded.  Make certain that they move freely.
Try a SMC reset:

  • Issue with magsafe/charging (blinks green, amber, off)

Having a quirky issue with my mid-2009 Macbook Pro.
A month or so ago, I began having an issue with my macbook charging. When the computer is up and running and I plug in the magsafe it will say "Calculating..." and then say "Not Charging" and then switch to battery use. It constantly does this as long as the magsafe is connected. The lights on the magsafe will constantly cycle from green to amber to no light.
At first, it would do it a few times then it would start charging. Now it constantly does this without ever stopping. I was editing video the other day for a while and it never stopped the cycle.
Thinking it was the battery, I took it into the Apple Store last week and got a new battery because it had been saying "Service battery" for a while and the battery would only last about 20 minutes on a charge. So I just thought the battery finally refused to charge.
    But the problem still exists.
The magsafe is new (only 3 months old) and here's the quirky thing: the computer will charge if it's asleep (lid closed) or shut down completely. No blinking lights at all. It will charge as long as it's asleep or shut down. So I don't think it's the charger. But as soon as you hit the power button to starting booting up, it will blink.
I have reset the SMC a couple times actually, but no change.
Is there something software/firmware related that I haven't tried? Any insight or suggestions would be greatly appreciated before I take it back to the Apple Store (which is about an hour away).
    Thanks!

  • I have a MBA. I bought the wrong magsafe charger

    Greetting,
I bought a 85w magsafe charger instead of the 45w that I was suppose to buy for my MBA. Should I try to return it or it does not make much of a difference? What type of issues can I be expecting?

The only "issue" you will have is that the higher wattage adapter is a tad larger in physical size, if that is of any consequence to your mobile usage.

  • Cinema display MagSafe

I have just connected a new 27" Cinema Display to my MacBook Pro. All is working very well. However I have a question.
When I remove my MagSafe connector, coming from my Cinema Display, while the computer is running, it immediately goes to sleep. Is this normal?
BTW I was removing the MagSafe to allow the battery to run down.
    Thank you.

What kind of Macbook Pro do you have?  The Retina Macbook Pro needs a different magsafe.  If you have the retina Macbook Pro, you can buy the Magafe 2 adapter.

  • MacBook Pro (mid 2012) turns on when lid is closed and MagSafe gets attached or detached.

I own a mid-2012 Macbook Pro with the 15" high resolution screen add-on (it's the model that was released alongside the new retina versions). The processor is a 2.6 GHz Intel Core i7. I run OS X 10.8.4.
I'd like to know if the following behavior is normal: when the computer is sleeping with the lid closed, and the MagSafe adaptor is either attached or detached, removing it or attaching it (with the lid still closed) will make the computer wake up from sleep. You can easily hear the fans starting when it does so. It'll stay on for 30 seconds to a minute, and then go back to sleep again. The screen doesn't seem to turn on when this happens and the lid is closed. Opening the lid when the computer exhibits this behavior results in a black (and useless) screen. In order to be able to use the pc you need to wait until it goes back to sleep on its own and then turn it back on.
Another (possibly related) issue appears when the PC turns off automatically (either while running or during sleep) because the battery is exhausted. When this happens, I usually attach the adapter (with the lid open, most of the times) and then press on the power button. A black-and-white screen with a loading bar appears for a few seconds, and then the full-color login screen appears (my pc is set to ask for the password every time it wakes from sleep). After the loading bar is gone and the full-color screen is back, I am unable to input my password, even though the password field looks focused. Neither the keyboard nor the mouse are responsive. This often happens in such a way that it is impossible for me to input my password (or interact with my pc) before it goes back to sleep for lack of interaction. Recently I've discovered that randomly pressing the power button and some keys on the keyboard (I still don't know what exactly triggers this) will make it able to receive input and thus I'll be able to type in my password and log in.
I'd like to know if any of you have encountered the two behaviors I've described and if you think they're normal or have any solutions for them.

    Hello terabytest,
I would be concerned too if my MacBook Pro exhibiting the behavior you described.  For a message like this, I recommend resetting your System Management Controller (SMC) and NVRAM.
Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own
Note: Portable computers that have a battery you should not remove on your own include MacBook Pro (Early 2009) and later, all models of MacBook Air, and MacBook (Late 2009).
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

  • MagSafe light sometimes turns off

Sometimes the light on the connector end of my MagSafe powercord goes out (ie: no green, no orange). However, there doesn't seem to be any lose of power from the cord when this happens: my MBP still says it's charging/is charged while the cord is in. I've been able to fix the problem by simply unplugging and replugging in the power cable. There doesn't appear to be an fraying or defects with the cords appearance. The light seems to go out sometimes when I move my laptop around while still plugged in to the power cord (eg: from my lap to a table)
    Is this cause for concern?

It sounds like a bad connection. You might check the port for any foreign matter that might be preventing the mag safe from fully engaging. Also check for any pins that might be stuck. Here's a link that might be helpful:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1713
The cord itself is more fragile than people sometimes realize, and there could possibly be some internal damage with a conductor sometimes making contact and sometimes not. Any excessive heat anywhere?
    Good luck!

  • Magsafe light flashes orange/green

I've just bought a used MBP 2.2 MHZ which operates fine except for switching back and forth between charging modes when the battery is around 85% full. The magsafe light stays orange a few seconds, then shows green for a second, then back to orange; the charging indicator on the screen switches at the same time. I swapped to a known working magsafe charger - same result. Operating on battery power is also a bit strange, with the available percentage of battery jerking around. Looking around, I see some 2007 and 2008 threads about this issue, but no final resolution at that time. Is there now a "bottom line" to this problem? Thanks!

No, it's not a battery calibration issue - but it could be a bad battery. The flashing MagSafe is a hardware issue. Since the SMC is the controller for power systems, resetting it is about all you can do for 'software' type of fix. If that doesn't correct it, the problem is either with the adapter itself (which you apparently ruled out), with the battery, or with an internal component (more likely the left I/O board, but possibly also the logic board itself).
The fact that your available percentage jumps around points to a deeper problem (time remaining can jump around depending on system load, but % charge should go in only one direction when running on battery).
Given your symptoms, I'd be inclined to try a replacement battery first, before looking inside the case for a problem.
If there's an Apple Store near you, make a Genius Bar appointment and let them have a look - they will be able to test the battery as well.
If you like, post your Full Charge Capacity and Cycle Count (from Apple menu > About this Mac . More Info > Power) for a preliminary diagnosis...

  • MagSafe connected, but not charging

Got a strange situation going on with our MacBook, not sure if y'all can help but here goes!
We have an out of warranty MacBook, bought as a refurb in 2008 I believe. As of a couple days ago, when we plug the MagSafe into the port on the computer, it doesn't light up. At least, not right away. Right now, it's charging, but I have it perched in such a way that my thigh is holding the connector just so... if I move my leg or the computer, the amber light goes away and it stops charging.
It seems to be acting as though there is something preventing the MagSafe from making a good connection with the port, but we've used a blower (like you'd use on a camera to get dust off the lens) on the port and there's nothing there. I can see nothing on either the MagSafe or the port that should be preventing them from hooking up!
I don't think it's the cord - we actually had cord issues earlier this spring, took it to the Genius Bar, and replaced the cord - though I suppose it could just be that something happened to it that we're unaware of. I'm more afraid that there's something wrong with the port itself. Battery seems to be fine too, considering how much use it's had - it's on cycle count 1049, health condition is listed as good.
Any thoughts? Has this happened to any of you? I'm sure we'll wind up taking it in soon, but I was just curious if anyone has had something similar happen with their machine.
    Thanks!

You're not going to like this answer, but the most likely cause is your logic board. Which would probably be about $400 + labor to install. The bit about how if you hold it just so and it will work does create a small ray of hope that it's simply a bad magsafe port. Those are fairly cheap to replace compared to a logic board.
All you can really do is bite the bullet and take it somewhere for an appraisal. Some places will give you a diagnosis free, others may charge for it.
You should probably also get that battery replaced sometime soon. Your average Li Ion battery is really only good for somewhere between 500-1,000 cycles. A bit of a range, I know, but it's where they usually start declining pretty rapidly. Yours is in the danger area where soon it's going to start bulging and permanently damage your case. Let it go long enough, it will explode.

  • Magsafe Charger not charging - when it lights up may not work

I started experiencing this a few weeks ago. Since then I have gone through 2 adapters.
The magnet works and everything, but it doesnt light up, and where that battery is up there it doesn't show any signs of recognition.
I have to wiggle it a little bit and apply some pressure to get it working.
Even then, it still sometimes doesn't work. It'll be green and say "Not Charging".
It doesn't always do that though. Sometimes it will charge. I have a new battery (from around christmas time) so it cant be the battery... i wouldn't think anyways.
Another thing, is when I get it charging, I have to lay it perfectly still. One little tiny bump or something will cause the light to go off and stop charging. I've cleaned the magsafe part and the part it lpugs into the computer. I have the same problem.

I had the same pin problem as many here. My neutral pin (outer most) stop pushing out, I can turn the plug upside down and the pin falls into place. Take a bit of wiggling to get it to charge the computer. This is a new magsafe, only 4 weeks old. I had to have my other one replaced because the exact same pin did the exact same thing again.

  • Magsafe and Battery issue

Hi there, I'm having a bit of a problem with my MacBook 2009. The exact model number is A1342, if that helps.
I originally bought it used online, and have been having issues since day one. It worked normally when I first plugged it in, then I unplugged it and went somewhere else for a bit. When I went to go plug it back in, the Magsafe cable showed a very dim orange light, and then it turned off completely, and the battery status at the top showed that it wasn't being charged. It also showed a little triangle icon, and said that the battery would need to be serviced soon.
Well, I did some research online, and even check the warranty status. I figured since it was expired, and I had paid so little for it, there was no issue in trying some self repair. I quickly found which cable connected to the main board, unplugged it, waited a few moments, then plugged it back in. Suddenly, the Magsafe would start working again! Until I unplugged it and plugged it back in, that is.
So, after a bit of leaving it sit, I was able to obtain a used, but working battery from a friend whose Macbook (The same model) decided it wanted to stop working. I plugged in the battery without removing the old one, and it worked well, so I plugged in the Magsafe cable, and the little orange light turns on briefly, then shuts off again right away.
Through all of this, I tried with the battery unplugged, and only the Magsafe running the computer, and it works perfectly fine! Green light and all! Plus, the Magsafe seems to work on other computers without an issue.
So, could it just be the battery? Or might it be something else? I've never had a problem with a Macbook before, so this is certainly a bit weird! Thanks in advance for your help!

Your battery looks pretty healthy to me. There is the possibility that the capacity will suddenly decrease though. With the capacity numbers you have, the battery should work fine for about 3 hours. I'm not sure a new battery will help with your issue.
If you disconnect the MagSafe adapter, does the computer shut off immediately? Do you have the battery status displayed in the menu bar? If so, what does it say?
Try resetting the SMC to see if that helps any:

  • Magsafe Power Light Issue

    Hello everyone,
Just recently (as in yesterday) my light on the Magsafe power charger for my Macbook decided to switch back and forth from the green light to the orange charging light all day. It is still doing it as I type and I am really getting frustrated with this issue. The charge on the battery will be about 80% and will take hours upon hours to reach charged. When it finally does reach charged, the light stays green on the charger, however when I unplugged it, my Macbook reported that about 700 hours of battery life is left, and did not update as time went on. In addition, my Macbook no longer displays the message telling me that my computer is running off reserve battery power and simply dies on me without notice when the battery gets low as opposed to going to sleep. This is another issue I would like to get solved and may possibly be related to the light problem on the magsafe charger.
I did notice that there is a tear in the wire (near the plug part of the charger) and it is fairly large (as in able to see inside to the metal wiring, of which a few are broken). However, my battery also has 424 cycles on it as well. So I am not sure if either may be causing this issue.
I have reset the PRAM a few times as well as resetting the SMC with no luck in fixing the issue, and would like to know if anyone can help.
I would really like to avoid service, or buying new parts because I have a limited budget and am hours away from the nearest Apple Service Center.
If anyone has any advice or suggestions, it would be much appreciated.
    Thank you in advance everyone!

    Hi,
First, be sure the battery has nothing that would cause the battery to have poor contact witg the terminal in the computer. Make sure the battery is fully seated and the retaining screw is engaged.
Try calibrating the battery. It sounds like the controller in the battery pack is confused. Turn the MacBook on and use the MacBook until the battery gets low enough to cause the MacBook to shut off. At this point, the battery is empty and controller chip also knows the battery is empty.
Next, charge up the battery completely. It is OK to use the computer while it is charging, but don't disconnect the charger before the battery is fully charged.
If calibrating doesn't help, see if you can borrow a friend's charger.

  • MagSafe LED always amber - Battery won't charge past 90%

My 2007 SantaRosa model also suffered from the Navidia 8600 chip failure and I took it in for diagnosis and repair under them unannounced 'recall'. I got it back and all was working just fine... for the first week. It was actually working better than before, and still is except that quite suddenly, the battery has stopped charging all the way up to 99-100%, and the amber light on the MagSafe adapter of the charger will not change to green. Right now the battery will not charge above 90%, and the charger has been attached over-night. The charger is not over-heating as far as my touch can tell, there is no fray in the MagSafeplug, it is clean and it is plugged into a reliable outlet.
Yes, I did do an SMC reset, ran the long version of the Apple Hardware Test from the install disks, and did do a battery recalibration. The Hardware test indicated that there was no problem with the laptop, and as part of the logic board replacement due to the Navidia problem, the Apple techs also had successfully run the full course of diagnostics - no problems indicated.
I have a second battery that I installed and still get the same result - incomplete charging and constant amber LED.
Any of you had this problem or have suggestions of another route to follow in troubleshooting this pain the the rump?? I've Googled this problem to death and not seen a page that mentions a problem where the MBP charger amber light stays on constantly with incomplete battery charging.
Let's see if the collective powers of this forum have the solution! Thanks in advance to all...

and I took it in for diagnosis and repair under them unannounced 'recall'.
Take it back ASAP. If the problems started after the logic board replacement (that's the nVidea fix) then something about the new board or the way it was reassembled is wrong.

  • Magsafe or battery issue? MBP 17"

    Hi Guys,
My macbook has been in sleep mode for a couple of days off charge. i went to use it the other day and it was completey dead. There were no indicator lights on the battery not even 1 flashing to show battery drained, I left it charging over night and yet still nothing, The magsafe has a green light rather than a amber one. Also the magsafe power pack isnt getting hot? Would you say this is an issue with the battery or the charger?
    Thanks in advance.

  • MagSafe LED issue

I own a MacBook Pro for 6 months now, and it always worked properly. Still, I'm concerned about the recent behaviour of its MagSafe connector. Its LED was usually always lit green when plugged on and the battery was charged, but since around 15 days, although it's lit green when I first plug it, it turns off (without cutting off the power, as the icon on the menu bar shows) around five minutes later. If I unplug, then plug it on again, it lits up normally, just to fade some minutes later again. I searched mostly all the web and didn't find any other case like mine. I wonder if it has anything to do with the battery firmware upgrade Apple released a few days ago... Am I too concerned?

Take a look at the pins inside the connector and see if any are stuck. I had one that would stick on my old MacBook that would cause some strangeness like you have. I would "thump" it with my finger or on the side of the table and it would pop the stuck pin and everything would be fine for a few weeks until it happened again.

  • Magsafe not charging, no led

    Hi,
My magsave cord broke, I worked till batterie 0%. Bought a new Magsafe.
But now the magsafe is not charging and the led light wont shine orange or green.
I did a smc reset, a pram reset, took the batterie out and push the button till it went off. Tried SMC 1.4 update but stated not needed.
Cleaned the connector pins on the mbp with alcohol.
So i figured the magsafe does not work, took the old broken one apart and fixed the cable. Gives power again, but also no light and no charging.
The batterie looks fine, apart from empty:

If I've understood correctly, you still don't know whether either of your adapters is working properly. Test them both with the 15" MBP you mentioned and see whether they work. If either one does, but it doesn't when you test it with the 17" machine and its new battery, then the logical conclusion is that there's a problem with the charging circuitry in the MBP -- subject, of course, to confirmation of the presumption that the new battery is actually good. You may have to visit a Genius Bar or authorized service provider to get that confirmation and have everything tested conclusively.

  • Magsafe adapter issue

I purchased a non apple 60 watt magsafe adapter after my 2 year old macbook pro was having issues, I replaced the battery with a apple battery and the non charging issue continued, I would have to wiggle or place a phone on adapter where it magnetically attaches to laptop to get it to charge.  The light goes on and off at will, and in order to chjarge it I have to play with it.  The second adapter I bought worked great for 67 cycels and is now doing the same thing.. IS it the adapter or something more sinister? I tried to inform apple of the issue a few years ago and did not get anywhere.  Any advice?
    Thanks
