Mail 1.3.11 (v622/623) hang if message contains images - safari too

Hi, i recently got the 10.3.9 update and addtional updates for Mail and Safari. Every time i mark a message or tries to open a HTML message with graphics, Mail will hang. Same symptoms with Safari ??? CPU-fan keeps running up at medium speed.
Any ideas ?
John

Hello John.
i did not close all applications unless
OS X Installer told me to.
Regardless and for future reference - ALWAYS quit all running applications before installing a major OS Update. A major OS Update involves updating thousands of files and components. It is also a good idea to check the hard drive for any directory problems with Disk First Aid repair via Disk Utility when booted from your Panther install disc before proceeding with the installation.
I can see that there are a lot of issues with
Safari and Mail on the discussion forum, but i
cannot see that Apple is really participating ?
This is a user to user help forum that is provided and moderated by Apple only. Apple employees do not directly partipate in these user to user discussions.
And regarding seeing a lot of issues here, this is normal since these discussions are provided by Apple for people with a problem who are seeking help.
This is like a hospital ward for Macs so it is full of nothing but problems. This is not an indication every Mac user around the world is experiencing the same problem. Arriving at that conclusion based on visiting here is like visiting a hospital in your area and arriving at the conclusion that everyone in your area must be sick.
Strongly considering to move to Thunderbird and
then start using the Calendar project deliveries
and then get rid of the std. Apple apps.
Certainly your choice but I never experienced the same with Jaguar, Panther or now with Tiger so something else is wrong with your system or the OS Update installation.
And if you believe Thunderbird never has any problems, you are mistaken.

  • Bcc non-operating in MAIL 1.3.11 (v622/623)

Why is Bcc shaded and unavailable for use in my MAIL program? I really prefer to do Bcc instead of Cc to reduce the probability of recipients being picked up by spammers. Has anyone found the solution to this? I don't want to have to spend the money for Tiger just go get this feature.

Hello, and welcome to the Discussions.
Where is Bcc shaded -- in the Compose window? The
Header box is there, but shaded?
Your profile info shows MAIL 1.3.11 (v622/623), but
on my QS G4, still running Panther, about Mail
displays MAIL 1.3.11 (v622/624)? The 624 may have
come with a Security Update, that impacted Mail, I
but I have not researched -- have you purposely left
off any updates, or could there have been a flawed
    update?
It might help to download the most recent Combo
Update for 10.3.9, and install it over the
current system. This would "conform" everything,
without doing a reinstall. As you may know, this can
often correct elements of the OS that have become
    flawed.

Btw, there is a separate forum for earlier versions
of Mail, but stay here for now:

Bcc does not open when I open a "New" mail. When I go to View in the main MAIL taskbar, that is where I get the gray shaded area for BCC. I tried to find the latest update for MAIL and can't find one.

  • Can't receive email using 10.3.9 and mail 1.3.11 (v622/623)

I can send but not receive email from my POP account using cable modem.
All settings appear correct. When I select "get mail," there are no warnings or dialog boxes and "fetching mail" and "traversing mail heirarchy" messages all seem to happen as before but then no mail appears. My wife can receive and send with her account on "her computer" setup (seperate user on this computer). I have checked all the mail help tips, compared settings with my wife's setup, deleted the suggested (on this discussion board) file that holds the downloaded mail data and emptied the trash, pinged (all ok), and checked the keychain (verified correct).
If I change to my .mac mail account, "get mail" works fine.
No problem accessing the faulty account via web mail.
    Any other tips??

Your answer looks like it would work for me, but I wanted to know where you got the info. I want to be sure I do the right thing. Can you tell me where you found that out? Or is what you said in this post everything I need to know?
I'm periodically having the same problem downloading mail. I used to think it was MSN not working, but now I've noticed that when it happens MSN Messenger is operating and saying I have mail, (and I can access it via Safari on the hotmail site) but Mail 1.3.11 won't stay online, saying a read error of some sort when I try to get my mail. This used to happen only occasionally but is increasing to many times every day.
    thanks,

  • Import 10.3.9 Mail 1.3.11 (v622/624) to 10.4.10 Mail 2.1.1 (752.3) probs

Hi, I've troll this forum and have not been able to locate my specific problem. I've tried importing my Mail 1.3.11 (v622/624) from 10.3.9 10.4.10 Mail 2.1.1 (752.3) using a Firewire transfer, Network transfer, as well as the Import Mailboxes... function in the Mail 2.1.1 client. Strangely, mail during the interval between late December 2005 to yesterday, when I started using this client on the MacBook is not appearing in my respective mail file folder system. VERY STRANGE. Everything else about Mail 2.1.1 is working fine. What happened to the code during late 2005 - ?? that would create such an anomaly? Yeah, I keep all my email. ;^)
Any ideas what else I can do? I've tried rebuilding the Envelope Index file, dumping the Preferences in my profile and in the System folder, a complete reinstall,... What else can I do? I can certainly keep using my iBook G4 for mail and backward incompatible clients. But when it comes time to travel, it won't be an option to haul two laptops around. Any help or pointers would be appreciated!

Do you still have the use of 10.3.9 and Mail 1.3.11 with the original Mail folder you have tried to transfer? The condition of the mailboxes prior to trying to convert to Tiger and Mail 2.x is a key factor. I am pasting in some discussion about this -- please read, and ask any clarifications before actually doing anything:
The conversion process from earlier versions of Mail is flawed, especially if the mailboxes were NOT rebuilt before the upgrade to Tiger. To confirm that I have good basis for all of this, and for background, read:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301315
In a pre-conversion to Tiger mailbox, the only file that really mattered, in regard to message content, was the file "mbox". In a mailbox properly created and established in Tiger, the only thing that really matters is the folder named Messages.
Thus, if you are able to compare the size of both the mbox file and the Messages folder, at the time of conversion (a mailbox trying to have it both ways), and they are approximately the same size, then you can reasonably conclude everything was converted. There are some very minor exceptions to this comparative analysis, but it basically holds.
If you have a copy of a xxxxx.mbox folder with only a mbox file, or if any mbox file it contains is much larger than any Messages folder present, then it may worth trying an import command to check. If you make a Duplicate of the INBOX.mbox, and drag the copy to the Desktop, you can then import it into Mail 2.0, by targeting it, and saying it is a mailbox of type "Other" rather than type "OSX". Before attempting the Import, rename the INBOX.mbox copy to be OldInbox.mbox, and remove all the files within it EXCEPT the Info.plist and mbox files. When you do this, you can then access the imported mailbox, examine the messages, and transfer any you believe you need. At the same time, if you maintain the currently in-use mailbox, now altered to only have one Messages folder, you will have that to access as well.
If mailboxes in account folders do not convert properly during the upgrade to Tiger, then you don't use Import to recreate any mailboxes found in account folders, but rather only import to be added as On My Mac mailboxes.
If the pre-Tiger xxxx.mbox is stripped of all but the Info.plist file and mbox file, then recognition of relationships between messages received and the subsequent Reply may be lost, but not the messages. This is why the condition of the mailboxes (whether the index had been well maintained, which Rebuild does), in my opinion, matters at the time of conversion. For any index file leftover from the earlier structure to be helpful, it must be in good order. With nothing but the Info.plist and mbox file, an Import may be more successful, even though some messages linkage may be lost.

  • What about html email on Apple Mail 1.3.11 (v622/624)

Does anyone know of a good tutorial about html email? I understand about the
coding of the email proper, but my question is how you get the html to "link"
as email content, how one posts to his server, etc. I've seen a lot of tutorials
that explain what works with what email servers but have yet to see how you do these basic things. Finally, does the Apple Mail version I'm using below
accomodate html email? I've already coded a simple email in html but have no idea now what to do with it...?
    using Mail 1.3.11 (v622/624)with OS 10.3.9
    thx people...bq

Another issue with Mail (v3.6, 936); As I was responding to an e-mail this morning my cursor suddenly went nuts! It was as if the "return" key was being held down and it just keeps going! I can hold down the delete key to counteract it but as soon as I let up it starts right back again! Crazy! Might this be a virus of some sort? Anyone have any ideas?

  • Apple Mail takes a very long time to send messages.

A few weeks ago, Apple Mail started to act up.
Even small email messages without images now take 30 seconds to send.
They sit forever in the outbox.
What can be the reason of this?

Window menu -> Activity menuitem will give you all the background processes of Mail, and should give you an idea what is hanging its processes.
Mail can especially get tied up if Spotlight or Time Machine are trying to redo their indices.

  • Help - Mail is corrupted and now Safari too!

This is beginning to feel like my system is infected with a malicious virus!
I've been having this problem with Mail -
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/17059672#17059672
But on top of that now Safari has been crashing all day off an on - at least 15 times.  I've restarted, repaired permissions, and even tried to reset Safari but it often freezes.  I did succeed resetting Safari, but the problem is still there.
Now Safari also has started losing the menubar!
Losing Mail and Safari in one day is scary - what is going on? - help!
Here's the last Safari crash log on pastebin -
    www.pastebin.com/WY9qQ0aM

Thanks so much for the input!
I've now done the things you mentioned and also ran the SpiceRack uninstaller as well.  Same problems with Safari and Mail - no difference.  I tried to clear cache and reset Safari again and it froze up.  I used Force Quit and then got the error information below -
I've downloaded Safari and can reinstall if that would clear this problem out.  I sync bookmarks with XMarks so no loss there.
1Password is current and useful also syncing across the desktop, MacBookPro and iPad.  I can give Keychain Access a try, but I've used 1P for years wiithout a hitch.

  • In mail, bottom of screen used to show whatever message was higlighted, now i have to double click

in mail, my inbox screen was split, with the messages in the top portion ( from: subject: date received: mailbox) & the info from the highlighted mesage in the bottom portion.
Currently I've "lost" the split screen and must double clikc the message which then opens a new window to read, forward etc.
How do I get the origional display back?

once I posted this question, I looked to the right of the support screen & saw the MORE LIKE THIS box with suggestions of like questions.
"go to the bottom of the mail window, you should see a line, at the middle of this line you should see a dot, drag that drop to about the middle of the window and drop it, you will then have the preview pane for previewing emails at your disposal. move that line anywhere you want depending on how you would like the layout to appear.
    hope this helps"

Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
    Or quit mail and restart.
Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Quit/close open apps by double tapping the home button and the task bar will appear with all of you recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner to close the apps. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.

Can you log on to the email account via webmail in a web browser, view the email and delete it from there if necessary.

    Sorry for the delay...
I did what you've told me, new account and manually copied my files from Time Machine. I had lots of permissions problems, but at the end, almost everything is in order... It seems it had to be with some of the Apple Preferences, but I can't be sure, as most of them were dumped to the trash can.
I still don't have my Mail Rules back, unfortunately, although I did goggled some. It is a pity, as I had around 30 or 40 of them, getting my mail in order to each of its mailboxes, but it is a small price as the rest doesn't show the before syntoms.
    Thanks for the help, anyway!!

  • How can I empty anApple e-mail program mailbox.  I have thousands of message I wish to delete, but am unable to do so.  Any suggestions?

How can I empty an Apple e-mail program mailbox.  I have thousands of message I wish to delete, but am unable to do so.  I open the e-mails on my laptop, so I don't usually need to open them on the iMac.  Whenever I use select all, and the move to trash, they always seem to reappear again.  Prospectively, I know I can change the e-mail settings in preferences, but that doesn't help get rid of what is already there.  Any suggestions?

You mention 2 computers. Not sure how one relates to the other. Are the messages on one and not the other?
Are they in the Inbox, or another local folder you created? If a local folder, delete the folder.
Do you have anything used to sync messages between the 2 computers? If so, disable it.
Select the messages and choose Delete instead of moving to the trash.
If that doesn't work, rebuild the mailbox, quit Mail and reopen and try again.
If all fails, delete the account from the computer. Since it is POP, when you re-add the account, there won't be any messages to download.

  • Mail avatar no longer displays how many new messages

Mail used to show the number of unread messages in its avatar --a number would appear in a little red circle--but that no longer happens.  Is that a new Mavericks thing?  Notifications are fine if you're working in Mail but I want to see how many unread messages there are before I open Mail.
    What's going on?

    Timothy,
It depends upon where the Mail application is installed. Since Mail is by default, usually installed in the Macintosh HD/Applications folder, the "Computer" Collection should include the Helvetica font.
    ;~)

I have open office.  Someone sent me e-mail I can't open.  get error message power pc no longer supported.  How do I open this doc?

Right click your document, hover over "Open with..." and then click "Other".
    Find TextEdit and click "Open".
TextEdit will then do it's best to open your document.
If you have iLife, do the same but instead of opening with TextEdit open with Numbers, Pages, Keynote, e.t.c.
    To download iLife, click here.
If the above link does not work, click here.

Added "If the above link does not work" at the bottom of the post.
