Mail 2.1.3 cannot quit, cannot synch, goes to endless beachball

Hi,
maybe this issue has been posted already but I cannot understand what to do to fix it.
Issue:
When I open Mail 2.1.3 I cannot see any message unless I select View Messages in the Window tab.
I cannot synch the POP account with my gmail account, the beachball appears and runs endlessly with completing the synch task
I cannot select the General tab in Preferences. The beachball appears and runs forever and I have to force quit the application
When I hit Quit nothing happens, I have to force quit to close it.
I have enough memory space on my HD
I have run HD validation and it is OK
Help, when do I have to do to fix this?
Do i have to reinstall Mail ?
Will I lose the emails currently in Mail?

Hi Betty, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Could be many things, we should start with this...
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

Then Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then I'd backup these two Mail folders, by right clicking on them in the Finder, then choose Archive/Compress.
Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail
Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail Downloads
Right click on that Mail folder, choose archive, you'll get everything in the folder, and the folder itself in a file called Mail.zip, move it to a safe place, same for the Mail Downloads folder... only the plist is separate.
Then In your home folder, try moving this +folder & file+ to the Desktop...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail
Move to the Desktop...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/Envelope Index
Reboot when complete.

I want to shut down but I cannot quit mail - seem to be stuck - there is a draft that will not delete and I cannot send,, reply or delete

Force Quit .
Press command + option + esc keys together at the same time.
Wait.
When Force Quit window appears, select Mail, if not already.
Press Force Quit button at the bottom of the window.
Wait.
Application will quit.
If this does not help, press the power button for 7 or more seconds.
Computer will shut down.
Restart.

Since using Maverick OS, I cannot quit mail without "force-quit".

Since I downloaded and started using Maverick OS, I cannot quit Mail without using the "Force-Quit..." command. The "Quit Mail" command under the Menu is greyed out.

You can also force quit apps using Activity Monitor located in HD > Applications > Utilities.
Select the CPU tab.
Select Mail under Process Name.
Select Mail then click the force quit icon (circle with an x) top left side of the Activity Monitor window.

I cannot quit Mail

Whenever I quit Mail it starts back up on it's own within about 15 seconds. That, coupled with major problems importing old calendars into iCal is making me think that Leopard is an operating system Microsoft would be proud of.

Like others, I had a problem with mail in Leopard in that I cannot quit the Mail app so I always had to Force Quit. Although it did not seem to do any damage, I was not pleased with this method.
I found a solution though. Make a copy of the ~/Library/Mail folder (on your desktop or on an external drive). Then delete ~/Library/Mail folder, log out, log back in. Start Mail app and it should prompt you to set up your account. If you have an IMAP account, the server should recreate your mailboxes although it may take a few minutes.
After doing this, I can now Quit from Mail app without any problem in Leopard.

Firefox crash reporter window popup won't follow up and report when I click on report crash, and I cannot quit firefox so that I can open the browser, I only get the crash reporter opening

Firefox crashed, when I tried to restart firefox the crash reporter dialogue box opens. Only 2 choices are offered, restart firefox and quit firefox. Neither option will work. I cannot quit firefox and when I opt to restart firefox the only thing I get is another dialogue box opening.

Unless you plan to have multiple email accounts open in different tabs at the same time, there is no need for Multifox. If each user has their own [[profiles|profile]], then the Multifox extension will not be required. How long has it been going on? I've had my yahoo mess up and if i wait a bit it resolves itself. Yahoo is doing something with their servers and it messes with your mail if your mail happens to be on one of those servers.

Or you can actived the right button on your magic mouse and click on they icon in the dock. then you select "stop" and it's out of your dock.

I cannot quit Safari. Quit is shaded in the menu. I control/click on icon in dock and quit, but it does not work. I reset Safari - still no change. Can't shut down.

Under the Apple you will find "Force Quit" select Safari and quit.
