Mail 2.1.3 Hangs

Starting Mail is not the problem, starts right up, downloads, allows me to read all, chuck out the junk, etc.
If I use the "Reply" function, it hangs, BUT only when the received mail contains an attachment. With yahoo or AL users, it happens a lot.
Same thing when I create a new mail message, all works just dandy, UNTIL I add an attachment.
It has hung for as long as 5 minutes, with a particularly large pdf.
I've repaired permissions, verified disk, ran onyx.
This happens only on the MBP, not the Cube, both running same OS and Mail version.

Oops, they are only available for 10.5 I had recently updated a few computers and thought one of them was running 10.4

  • Mail & Exchange 2010, periodically hangs or stops receiving

Subject pretty much says it all. The weird thing is I can login with OWA or check on my iPhone and see new messages. Why would iPhone be able to download messages when Mail can't?
I have no problem with the connection on the machine running Mail. At the same time Mail won't download anything, I can open Safari, login to OWA, and see new messages.

After having the same error ("opening mailbox - Requesting latest information" - hang) and fighting for months on my Mac (Lion) to solve it, including writing angry bug reports to Apple - I think I finally found the source of the problem:
There was an old (invalid) certificate installed in Exchange (2007, in my case), enabled for SMTP.
Nobody seems to care about this - including Snow Leopard Mail, Outlook and all iOS devices - but Lion Mail cared, and just stuck. Typically after some time - maybe sleep/wake or just a couple of hours - Mail was stuck and did not receive any new mails anymore, until I Force Quit it.
I got the hint from another forum (somebody suggested changing the properties in the locally installed certificates in Lion - but this was not the solution) and after seeing the question popping up once in Mail Preferences (do you want to trust this (old) certificate).
After removing the old certificate from Exchange (good luck with this admin user interface - no wonder we did not notice it) - everything works ok for me, already a day without any hangs.
Hope it helps! (Let us know the outcome...)

  • Mail command in script hangs and does not release control to calling script

    Hello folks,
I am running in a situation which I haven't seen before.

  • Mail in Mountain Lion hangs on Exchange mailbox "Requesting Latest Information"

I had an annoying problem recently with Mail hanging when synchronizing with our company's Exchange Server. I could somehow solve this by searching Apple Discussions and finding this thread: https://discussions.apple.com/message/21687261#21687261.
There it was recommended to disable all Rules in regard to moving messages to local mailboxes.
But this is not a permanent and satisfying solution
(deleting the Exchange account and re-adding it did not help).
Does anyone else have this problem?
What I will do next is delete all rules and start re-adding them ...
Message was edited by: Christian Theussl

I had the same problem, and was eventually able to "fix" it, in an unsatisfying way.
I noticed that I always got the "requesting updated information" message along with "moving messages" or "copying messages".  Clicking the stop sign on the "requesting updated information" message sometimes got it un-stuck, but sometimes then left one or more mailboxes in an inconsistent state, which required me to do "Rebuild mailbox" frequently.
The solution?  Disabling all of my auto-filing mail rules.  It seems that the problem occurred when these rules were being triggered to move messages from my inbox to a local mail folder.  I turned off the rules, and haven't had the problem since then.  I can move messages by hand which does not cause the hanging problem.
This is unfortunate, since I really like being able to auto-file messages by project.  I didn't have this problem with Snow Leopard.

  • Mail not responding, just hanging

Mail has been working fine since I started using my iMac, but today when I opened the App it has just hung, displaying the colour beachball and will not respond to anything. I have used 'Force Quit' to close Mail and repaired permissions with Disk Utility, but still Mail isn't responding.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

    Andrew
you might try a search of Mail discussions for Mail+Hanging - there have been many threads on the subject, most with great advice.
    Here's One
Sometimes, hanging can be due to Mail attempting to download a large message on start-up. If you have web -access to your email (many isp's allow this), you can look at the list of messages via safari & see if that applies to you.

  • Mail 5.3 preferences hangs

I'd appreciate it if anyone can tell me how to resolve my OS X 10.7.5 problem with mail 5.3.  It hangs perpetually, it's driving me crazy.
I've noticed it happens when I try to open preferences, when I switch gmail boxes (e.g. from draft to incoming).  I've had to used force quit hundreds of times!

Likely a damaged .plist file in the original account.
Is Mail POP, IMAP, or maybe both?
First Quit Mail, then I'd backup these two Mail folders, by right clicking on them in the Finder, then choose Archive/Compress.
    Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail
    Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail Downloads
(Could be a different folder here if you chose such in Mail Prefs)
Right click on that Mail folder, choose archive, you'll get everything in the folder, and the folder itself in a file called Mail.zip, move it to a safe place, same for the Mail Downloads folder... only the plist is separate.
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
This last one is likely the problem, I'd move it to the Desktop & start Mail & setup the account(s) again.
PS. I can't remember, but in Lion, Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail might be Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail2 or such.

  • Mac Mail 10.4.4 hanging on .mac account

I have been frustrated to no end by an issue in Mac Mail with my .mac account.
What happens? Whenever I access my .mac account via Mail and Mail attempts to download messages, it hangs. Not spinning-colored-beachball hangs, but it seems like the server is stalling. Upon closer inspection, the activity viewer shows Mail trying to cache any messages with attachements, regardless of how old they are. Other processes include "[.mac] Synching with Server" for Deleted Messages, Sent Messages, Trash, Junk Mail, etc. Also, "opening mailbox" three or four times, even though I only have one mail account. Everytime I try to stop these processes, they just re-emerge at the bottom of the list.
This problem occurs across versions of Tiger (10.4.2, 10.4.3, and 10.4.4) on a brand new iMac G5 20" with 2.5GB of RAM -- even after TWO erase-and-installs of the OS.
Help! I'm not afraid of complicated solutions. Thanks for your time.
    Ashley

I have similar problem with OS 10.4.11 and QT pro 7.4. When I write a mail and ask to 'attach' a wmv file I get two tiny examples superimposed. The front item will play, with sound but is so small you can't see the action.
This makes you reluctant to send the attachment,as you assume the receiver will not be able to see the picture (audio is ok).
However, I have sent the same item to myself, and it arrives correctly , normal size. Also, if you click while it is in the 'Outbox' it appears normal, but double click as if you wished to amend it and it appears with the tiny replicas.
It is very annoying, but the answer, pending an Apple Fix, is just send it anyway, the receiver won't know you have a problem....

  • Mail 5 folder synchronization hangs

I have an exchange account set up in Mail 5.  I have a particular folder titled "*2011".  Currently there are about 1700 messages in the folder.  On a random basis (I believe as I cannot pinpoint a certain action), I move a message to the folder and then the sync icon starts going and does not stop.  Mail stops coming in while it "syncs" and I cannot delete or file any messages.  When I try to quit, Mail hangs and I usually have to force quit.  When I start up again, the incoming mail all comes in, the folder is all synced up and everything works.  But then, it happens again.  I have removed the entire account and added it again, and I get the same thing happening.  It does not happen with any of the other folders.
Any ideas on how to fix this?
    Thank you.

I to have a very similar problem, if anyone has any ideas on how to fix it please let me know.
    Thanks

  • Mail and login (vnc) "hang" then suddenly available again.

    hi all,
I'm hoping someone can help me solve this one.
Quite often during the day, my mail server both pop and smtp will suddenly be "unavailable". At the same time if I try to connect to my server via VNC and try to login, the login screen will just hang there for say 1 minute or more, and then log in. At the same time that the login happens, the mail server comes to life again - or sometimes not.
Normally I need to restart the server to get it all working ok again. As soon as it restarts, the mail server is fine and everything is back to normal speed again.
Also, while the mail server is not reachable my my Mail app (Apple Mail) and the login window has ground to a halt thinking, the mail server can still be "pinged" ok, and the web server is still running fine too.
    Any ideas?????
    regan

I've been struggling with this, primarily with 10.4 servers but it did seem to affect my personal 10.5 server for a moment.
From what I can tell, the authentication 'server' in OS X is getting overloaded with invalid SSH login attempts. What seems to be happening is that once the server is overloaded with invalid login attempts it eventually takes a very long time to return a response whenever there is an attempt to authenticate a password (logging in to POP, IMAP, SMTP, account login screen, AFP, etc). It appeared that over time one could log in with a delay of a few seconds, then a few minutes, then 5-10 or more minutes. I think you'd find that if you waited long enough, your attempt to log in via VNC would eventually go through. Just be sure to not do anything in the Finder afterwards that requires authentication!
These login attempts never bothered me before because my passwords are robust and I've limited SSH login to only the admin user. As a temporary solution, I've simply disabled the SSH server (in Sys Prefs Sharing pane, called Remote Login). Ideally I'd like to fix the server and keep SSH on port 22, but I'm leaning towards changing the default port to keep the losers at bay.
    Hope that helps.

  • Mail in Leo first "hangs" then works ?

First of all, I got my Macbook 2.16 Ghz for about 2 Weeks, upgraded to Leo from Tiger ( no fresh install )
Everything worked fine until 3 days ago.
When I first startup my Macbook, then Mail an get the first eMail it seems like Mail.app is hanging - after about 2 Minutes I can actually read the eMail.
This also happens sometimes during the day.
Mail.app doesn't really hang - but it just takes for every once in a while ?!?
I repaired the rights already but thats I all I could think of ( I am Switcher from a Windows Notebook )
    Any more tips for me?

    Hi,
if its any consolation I'm seeing the same problems you are my week old macbook pro 2.2Ghz - Leopard was installed as an archive install over Tiger and I migrated my account from a tiger Alu powerbook.
Mail.app sometimes suddenly stops responding (everything else is fine) and I have menu meters installed and can see both CPUs are running idle. After about 2mins it comes back and immediately executes every mouse click and keypress which was queued during the "hang".
Do you have very large mailboxs ? My total mailbox size exceeds 2GBytes.
    Regards
    Tze Meng

  • Sync Mail to iPhone functionality hanging in iTunes

I am running OS 10.4.10, iTunes 7.4.2 (4), and I was having this problem both before and after updating to 1.1.1 on my iPhone.
Basically, I have several accounts configured in my mail client in the MacOS, but my .mac account is the only one I access and use on my iPhone. It was working great, and frankly, still does. However, if I have 'Sync selected mail accounts' checked in the Info tab when my iPhone is connected, the syncing process freezes during the 'syncing mail accounts'. I actually walked away, and found it sitting two hours later at the same prompt. When I uncheck it, everythin else syncs perfectly, no issues, and frankly, even when it's not syncing through iTunes, it works fine on wifi and edge, so I am using my phone.
I don't know what functionality I'm losing when I don't sync this email account through iTunes, but whatever it is, I'm not seeing it.
Any ideas as to what this sync does (I did have to type in my mail password on my phone after my last reset), and any ideas on how to fix it? The problem started a few weeks ago under 1.0.2 and I seem to be running good with the function disabled, but I have a feeling when I add more mail accounts (which I intend to do) it may be helpful to have it working.
    Thanks,
    -Dan

The option to sync selected Mail accounts transfers email account settings from the Mail application on your Mac (for the selected account or accounts) to the iPhone so you don't need to set up the account or accounts on the iPhone. This process is in one direction only - from your computer to the iPhone. Any changes made to an account's settings on the iPhone is not transferred to the Mail application during the next sync.
So after this is successfully done, you can deselect the option unless you make a change to an account's settings with the Mail application that you want transferred to the account's settings on the iPhone.
This doesn't resolve the problem which should work regardless.
Try selecting "Mail Accounts" below "Replace information on this iPhone" under the Info tab for your iPhone sync preferences to see if this makes any difference with the next sync process after this is performed.

  • HT204150 Mail and contacts keep hanging.  As I check the iCloud settings there are multiple iCloud accounts listed in the contacts but I did not place them there.  Does anyone else have this problem... I've tried to find information within the support art

I'm having a tough time working within mail... it slows as I type in contacts...The letters appear as if I am typing really slowly!  When I look at the accounts listed in iCloud it appears the accounts are perserverating (listing additional accounts without my involvement!!) The iMac I am using has Mountain Lion with the most recent updates.  I welcome any suggestions!  Thanks

Thanks so very much... it took a while to delete all of the iCloud account duplicates.  And I had to go through the process a couple of times but it seems to be working much better.  One of the problems was while I was connected to the WiFi it kept trying to process all of the data for all of the accounts.  So I disconnected the WiFi and deleted many that way!  Thanks again!
