Mail 3.0 (Mac OS X 10.5): No sound when new email

Hello,
since upgrade to Mac OS X 10.5, no sound is triggered when new mail is coming, even if new mail sound is set...
Any idea?
Thanks in advance,
Cheers,
Eric

I think I just ran across a solution of sorts, though it's specific to my mail provider. I use Comcast, and when I upgraded, Mail took my old account settings. After the Leopard upgrade, the new mail sound was either not happening, or the "no mail" sound was playing even if I had new mail.
Just happened to randomly check Comcast's FAQ on how to set up smtp email for Mail, and it seems Comcast has changed their suggested smtp port number since I last set it up. I switched it to the new number listed in their current directions just to see what would happen, and voilà suddenly all the right alert sounds are playing at all the right times--including the new mail notification. (Note: I was still receiving email just fine prior to this with the old port number in there, but the alert sounds were all messed up as all of you have been describing above.)
I don't know if this will work for everyone, but it's worth a try. Sometimes ISPs do change their ports numbers over time...can't hurt to go check and see if yours are still the same.

HI there Eric , I have been using the internal speakers since I got my new IMac. The sound for incoming mail has always for me been sporadic, even with my external speakers. I am now using internal speakers, and the other day it just wasn't working, so as I have done before. I went into the sounds in system preferences, unchecked, the speakers I was using, changed the sound effect, from play new sound to something else, then changed them back to the way they were and it was working again. I have been doing that for over a year. And have sent a report to Apple a few times. Odd to have to that type of work around. I hate work around . It should just work or not. Ileen

  • where can I download new mail sound when new mail comes in?

where can I download new mail sound when new mail comes in?
    Thank you,
    BigBlaze

Go to Mail Preferences, use the drop-down "new mail sounds". The very last option is ADD/REMOVE. You can choose a sound that will be copied to your own User Library.
To find how many sounds you already have on the computer (TONS if you have any games) just to a search the computer for aiff or aif. Copy the file you like to the desktop so you can find it easily, and add it using the above instructions.
The sound gets copied to your library, so you can delete the desktop file when you're done.

    Hello,
'''Try Firefox Safe Mode''' to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
''(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)''
    * You can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the '''Shift''' key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    * Or open the Help menu and click on the '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' menu item while Firefox is running.
''Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"''
'''''If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode''''', your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] article for that.
''To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.''
''When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.''
    Thank you.

  • Apple Mail *sometimes* not "ringing" when new emails come in

The subject says it all... Why and how could this happen?

I don't know what to recommend. With my MobileMe, accessed in Mail 3.x or 4.x, the new message alert has consistently been silent, but since the feature in not in Mail 2.x, it is not that way on my old G4 running Tiger. With IDLE, in Mail 4.3 for example, the new message indicator in the Dock indexes immediately upon getting a message, whether the other accounts are being checked on the 5 min schedule or not, so Push is working as it is supposed to. I did not find that my Gmail account did that, even when I had IDLE selected, and the alerted sound -- but only when all the accounts are being checked. Reminds me to test that again.
My high use account is not my MobileMe, so hard to judge whether it ever gives the alert sound when the cycle to check for new messages coincides with the arrival of a new message in the Inbox.
My hosted domain IMAP account permit selecting, but they never seem to actually push email.

  • No Sound When New E-Mail Arrives in Mail

I would like to hear a sound when a new e-mail arrives in my Mail's Inbox but I could not make it work. In Preferences, under General -> New messages sound, I selected New messages sound. When I selected it, I heard the sample beep. However, no sound comes out of the speakers when new mail arrives. Am I missing something or doing something wrong here? Thank you.

There's some sort of problem but I do not know if this is a bug in OS X or a bug in Mail or a peculiarity in the way the IDLE feature works, but for some people if it's enable some or all of Mail's sounds do not work. I puzzled over this for a long time until someone told me about the problem with IDLE. I've passed it on to others who are just as bemused about why turning off IDLE fixes the problem. The problem has been reported to Apple, and one day it may get fixed. So basically I can't give you the reason.

  • How to change sound when new mails come?

I didn't find it in sounds or mails settings.

    Not in Mail settings.
On my iPhone it is available at Settings > Sounds > Sounds And Vibration Patterns > New Mail.

  • Intermittent new mail sound when retrieving emails.

    Hi there
There will probably be (hopefully) an easy answer to this question. I recently migrated to an iPhone 4 (my first iPhone) and I'm still learning how to use it.
I've configured my email to check my emails from my "normal" email account (POP account) and it works properly I think. When I tap the mail icon it opens, checks mail and SOME of the time there is an email notification sound.
That's my question: why does the email notification only sound now and again. If I send myself a test email it doesn't sound (new mail sound is definitely turned on) and only some mail triggers the email notification. It's no big deal but it's annoying me. Latest software version 4.3.3 installed. I've Googled it but not allot of it makes sense to me. Has the same beaviour either on WiFi or 3G.
Can anyone shed any light please?
    Cheers

  • Stop airplane sound when new tab is open on Mac.

Please share the steps to stop this from being heard.

I'm on a Windows 7 PC, but had the same problem since re-setting FF following a nasty "Ads by Info" infection. None of the suggested solutions here or on other forums worked. Finally found a setting for the NoScript plugin (a must, IMO): under the Notifications tab, unticked "Audio feedback when scripts are blocked." That was it - NoScript was blocking scripts on new tabs, causing the notification. Also happened when first clicking on an unviewed tab. A-OK now!

  • Sent mail not sent; .Mac mail not receiving

Having a real problem on several computers. First of all, my ISP assures me that they have not blocked any ports or changed anything about their network recently. And I too have changed nothing recently.
I am not able to send e-mail it seems from my .Mac account, although the messages appear in my Sent folder and I do not receive any error messages. I am not able to send messages to myself to confirm working order. It also doesn't work if I am working thru the web based .Mac e-mail. I have another e-mail address running thru Mail as well and it seems to send and receive e-mail just fine. Although using it to send my .Mac address a message does not work. I have tried to send my .Mac address an e-mail from another .Mac address that my wife uses to no avail either. Similarly my other non-.Mac e-mail address does not receive e-mail from her .Mac address either.
Its puzzling. When I take my wife's MacBook to a local free wifi hotspot all e-mails seem to work fine.

You need to determine if the issue is system wide or isolated to your user account on the computer.
Create a new user account by going to System Preferences>Accounts
Click on the lock in the lower left corner. Enter your admin password.
Click on the + sign and create a new user.
Go to the apple menu and choose the bottom menu choice to log out.
Log into the newly created user account.
Go to System Preferences and choose .Mac
Enter your user name and password in the fields.
    Close System Preferences.
Launch Mail and it should be set up automatically and download your mail from the server.
Test whether you can send and receive.
If it does not work. You have a system wide issue.
Your best bet in that case is a reinstall. You need to make sure you don't have other issues.
Run disk utility from the Utilities folder, choose your hard drive, Verify disk.
If Verify disk fails let me know.
If Verify disk passes then repair disk permissions and you are ready to reinstall.
Do an archive and install preserving user and network settings then do a Software Update.

  • What server do I use? setting up E-mail account on Mac computer

Okay, i keep getting this message that my outgoing mail didn't go through. I'm kinda of server illierate (sp.)
Im not using Mobile me account and I don't want to use it mobile me either.
Which one do I use? POP,IMAP,SMTP?
I don't want to pay MOBILE me to set up for Mail in my mac computer. I want to set up mainstream email account for my Mac only. TO SENT PICTURES AND STUFF.
I already have yahoo and hotmail account.
Incoming Mail Server and Outgoing Mail SErver, do I use the same one e.i. [email protected]
Help me with my mail set up process. I already set it up and i didn't do it right.
    thanks for reading my message.

Im not using Mobile me account and I don't want to use it mobile me either.
OK. No problem. It isn't required.
Which one do I use? POP,IMAP,SMTP?
You use whatever your email provider uses. SMTP is the standard for outgoing mail, with POP and IMAP used for incoming mail. Most providers support both options, some only support one or the other. You'll need to check with your mail provider to determine which is appropriate for you.
I don't want to pay MOBILE me to set up for Mail in my mac computer. I want to set up mainstream email account for my Mac only. TO SENT PICTURES AND STUFF.
OK. We've already ascertained that MobileMe is not a requirement here.
I already have yahoo and hotmail account.
OK, that's a start. You can configure Mail.app with either of them, or both if you prefer.
Incoming Mail Server and Outgoing Mail SErver, do I use the same one e.i. [email protected]
[email protected] is not a valid server address. That is your email address.
You'll need to check with Hotmail what their SMTP server address is (their help section is so awful I couldn't find it before I had to go shower to get clean).
For Yahoo, they have a help page on enabling POP access to your mailbox, along with the relevant entries you'll need to put in your mail client.

  • Apple Mail app crashing when deleting emails - just started

I opened up mail a bit ago to sort through my usual clutter of new emails.  As I hit delete - Mail crashed, throwing up the typical report box where I can enter what I was doing when the application quit.  I just hit the "delete" button....  Ugh.
So I typed that, hit reopen, and began again... after about 5 deleted emails, it did it again... sigh.
So - what might be a good avenue to pursue in correcting this?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
In the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports (not "Diagnostic and Usage Messages") for crash reports related to the crashed process. The report name starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report — they're very long and not helpful.

I seem to have lost the "scwoose" alert sound when an email has been sucessfully sent from the MBP.  I cannot seem to find how to re-set it.

    Hello Daryl,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
I found another Apple Discussion covering the same topic, with a response showing it solved the issue.

  • Bounce Mail in Dock when New Mail arrives?

So I'm migrating over to Mail after 14+years on AOL mail and I'm wondering if there is a way to have the Mail application icon in the Dock bounce when a new email arrives, similiar to the way the AOL one does?

    Hello DuQuoi,
Just saw this message today when looking for an answer on something for myself and thought I'd respond. So sorry for the late response and if you've all ready found an answer, but at least for others looking to perform a similar action when new email arrives.
This can be done with a simple rule. I have mine set to "If all conditions are met", "Email is in <My Mailbox Name>", "Message is addressed to [email protected]" then "Bounce Icon in Dock".
My spam goes to a different folder on my email account so spam isn't caught by this.
