Mail 3.5 doesn't expunge on an IMAP

Running 10.5.6. Mail v3.5. Spamcop is my IMAP server. I have the IMAP settings in Mail set to leave deleted messages on server and also to move deleted messages to the Trash. I have selected the appropriate IMAP mailbox for Trash.
When I delete an email from the inbox, mail marks it for deletion and moves a copy into the Trash folder, but Mail never expunges the original message from the Inbox. I can verify this by using spamcop's webmail Interface. Ive quit, reopened, quit, reopened, logged into the web interface, refreshed and they are not expunged.
The only way I can get Mail to expunge is by right-clicking the Inbox and selecting the command to permanently delete messages. I have completely deleted com.apple.mail.plist as well as the ~/Library/Mail folder. This happens on several different computers (MBP 10.5.6, PowerBook 10.5.6).
Is there no way to get Mail to automatically expunge messages marked for deletion? It seems there are a number of annoying quirks in Mail 3.5 that were not in 2.0 (the last version I used 4 years ago, Ive been an Entourage user up until now), this expunge issue being one of them. The other is Mail's annoying habit of creating Notes and Apple Mail To Do folders.

Sorry, I went through a lot of iterations with the IMAP mail. I actually did not tell Mac Mail which folder to use for the trash -- I let it just use the "Deleted Messages" folder it created on the server. So when Mail deletes them from there Gmail moves them to the Trash folder. I know it sounds weird. That's how I kept my "Trash" folder safe on the IMAP server. And actually on the Mac after you designate a different folder as a "Trash" folder it will move it up to the top. The server's "Trash" folder will re-appear under the server folders and the Mac won't touch that one anymore.
So when you initially delete a message it moves it to that folder. When you do COMMAND-K Mail will purge it from there and Gmail ends up with a copy in the IMAP Trash folder.
This is just how I do it. There is probably a better way but may give you some more ideas.

Also about 3 weeks ago attachments only get loaded about 1/4 of the way - if that. So I have to log onto my web based mail program from the host and retrieve attachements or check the messgae with my iphone.
Please - does anyone know how to fix this?

I figureed out that spotlight was turned off via terminal - I shut it off to unmount a disk (which didn't work anyways)
sudo mdutil -a -i on
that's the termianl command to turn spotlight back on. As far as my attachments not fully loading in mac mail on my iMac that still baffles me.

IWeb E-mail me icon doesn't seem to be working!

I have just updated my webpage using iWeb 2.0.4 (I'm still running Mac OS 10.4.11) and my "E-mail me" icon doesn't seem to work anymore. I tried it in both Safari and Firefox and neither browser recognizes this as a hotspot. I checked and my e-mail address is setup, so I don't know what else to try! Any ideas anyone?

The email button and the hit counter sit in the footer of the webpage. The photo of the plane looks as though it may be blocking it.
In iWeb do a Shift - Command - L to show the layout and drag the photo out of the footer.

After downloading Firefox, my e-mail spell check doesn't work

for years I had used IE. I recently installed Firefox and now my e-mail spell check doesn't work. The dictionary is loaded but cannot figure out how to resolve this. It still works when using IE, so am assuming it's a Firefox glitch.

Do you have a dictionary installed and selected?

* Open the "Add Dictionaries" link to install a dictionary if you do not have one.
* Make sure that [X] "Check Spelling" in the right-click context menu is check-marked.

I was using hotmail in my iPhone 4S but many people suggested me to use GMail account because it is good for Syncing. I also have Mac so i ditched the hotmail and configured GMail account. Now everything works fine on my Mac but not in my iPhone 4S. When a new email comes to my inbox, my Mac display it normally but as far as my iPhone 4S is concerned, it doesn't show even a notification. However when i force it to download the new message by clicking the cricular arrow, it load them and shows them as well. It is not normal because it should do the same thing automatically, not manually. Do you know,how to fix it? AOL mail comes right though, both have the same settings.

DId you try, settings, notifications?
under your gmail or whatever mail you have you can choose to fetch every 15 minutes, hour, or manually. Sounds like you are on manually, when you open your email.
MAnually does save battery though.

That doesn't help me. For itunes it brings me to the express lane which doesn't help because my case is not in it. It's all standard procedure things. I understand those but my situation is different. The combination of a passport forgotten and an non-existing email adress (and birth dates that are not correct or not accepted). What I need is my password emailed to another email adress than the original one because that no longer exists.

In the preferences file, it already shows that my signature belongs to my mail account. In fact, everything is precisely how I had it setup before Lion upgraded the mail program. According to Mail - Preferences - Signatures, my signature should be automatically appended to my email, but the compose window doesn't allow me to select the signature. It only shows that there are no signatures and gives me an option to open the preferences file.
My point is that the preferences are set up correctly. Something else is broken here.

GMAIL Pop and Apple Mail 4.2: Doesn't Download all New Mail at Once

I was wondering if anyone encountered this issue. I currently use GMAIL and am popping my mail onto my Mac Mail 4.2. Everything seems to be working fine except that when I download new mail, it downloads it in small chunks. It doesn't grab all the new mail all at once.
So for example: I check GMAIL web and I know I have 10 new mail messages.
When I click "Get Mail" in the Mail app, I get 3 new messages. I click on "Get Mail" again, and then it gets 4 new messages. And then I do it again, and then it gets the final 3 messages.
Is there a reason why it does this? Is this a GMAIL config or Apple mail config issue?

First of all, confirm that you have set the Gmail account up as POP -- the default in Mail 4 when newly setting one up is IMAP, but POP setup can be accomplished. If the account was the result of earlier version, and merely now the result of an Upgrade Snow Leopard, then previous setup as POP should have carried over. Open Mail Preferences/Accounts/Account Information to confirm Account Type.
Then via browser access to your Gmail POP/IMAP settings, confirm that the appropriate Enable selections have been made.

Did you try the iPhone syncing options in iTunes?
Click on your iPhone in iTunes, and check under the Info section where you can choose which app to sync with. Is Windows Live Mail an option?

Mail (v5.0) doesn't sync IMAP folders

Since I upgraded my mac from SL to Lion, I've a big problem with Apple Mail. It doesn't sync any of the folders of my IMAP Account except the INBOX. I tried several things
deleted the whole /mail/ folder in the library
created a new user account on my mac and tried it there with my mail account
tested it on the mac of my brother (then we saw, that he has the same problem like me)
everytime there was the same result, I see the mails in my inbox, but I don't see any folder of my mailaccount.
My folderstructure (which I see in Thunderbird or in the webinterface) is build like this:
Inbox
    folder a
    folder b
    folder c
draft
junk
sent
trash
folder 1
folder 2
folder 3
But in Mail I only see:
Inbox
(no sent, no draft, etc.)
I tried to search through the board, but I didn't find a proper solution for this problem. I hope that you can help me.

My missing folders problem has been solved. I'm not sure if both of these steps are needed because in my desire to get a fix, I tried them both back to back without letting Mail syncronize between. They are easy enough to do, so I'd try them both unless you desire to tease apart what's going on.
These steps were suggested at another forum for solving an issue with missing IMAP folders.
The first step I did was to log into my Excahnge Server email account via the web portal and created a new folder called "NewFolder" as a subfolder in an already existing folder (not the inbox). [This is the step described in the other forum, but the directions were not too clear, so I decided to try the next step in case that is what they were talking about.]
Next, I went into Mail 5.0 and selected New Mailbox... in the Mailbox menu and selected the Excahnge Server email account, and created a folder named "Newer Folder".
After clicking OK, all of the missing Exchange folders appeared under the account name in the Sidebar.
Just to be sure everything was synced, I expanded and shift-selected all of the folders and the selected "Rebuild" in the Mailbox menu. When that was done, then for good measure, I selected "Synchronize" in the Mailbox folder and chose the Exchange Server account.

I just rebuilt my mail inbox, 1 iCloud account and 2 other imap accounts, and everything is gone. Nothing on the remote servers either and on all my iCloud sync mobiles. How can i recover all my emails? Thanks

Leave feedback for Apple at www.apple.com/feedback, or contact your email provider. It's the email providers that give that info to Apple, so both parties need to be updated.
