Mail 3.x and Ipswitch Mail

I've had problems similar to others reported on this forum with Mail 3.x and Ipswitch mail. After upgrading my MacBook Pro from Tiger to Leopard (archive and install), Mail ceased displaying messages from any of my Ipswitch Mail IMAP folders, including my inbox. From what I've read, there is a known conflict between Apple Mail's use of the IDLE command and Ipswitch's implementation of that command. Lots of fingerpointing, but no fix from either side. But I wonder if that's the whole story.
I recently decided to do an "erase and install" reinstall of Leopard on my MBP. I was just looking to clear out the junk on my partition in preparation for a major reorganization of the music/pictures/movies on my hard drive. After this reinstall, I reopened Mail to see if it made a difference with my work email (which uses Ipswitch). Lo and behold, all the messages loaded and I was able to open and read all of the messages. I figured that one of the software updates from Apple fixed the conflict.
To make a long story short, it didn't last. I am not sure if I actually sent any messages from this setup. But a couple of days after I set up the IMAP account in Mail, when I tried to send a reply to a message, the account stopped working. The messages that had been downloaded still displayed, but I cannot send or receive any new messages--basically back to square one. Here is the error message that displays (the same as ones that I saw prior to my "erase and install" of Leopard):
"Some actions taken while the account "midyork.org" was offline could not be completed online.
"Mail has undone actions on some messages so that you can redo the actions while online. Mail has saved other messages in mailbox "Sent" in "On My Mac" so that you can complete the actions while online."
"Additional Information: The connection to the server "mail.midyork.org" on port 143 timed out." Also seen: "Operation could not be completed (MFMessageErrorDomain error 1028.)"
The fact that it worked for a while, then didn't, makes me wonder if there is a preference file or setting that is getting "stuck," if you will: For example, in Mail > Preferences > Accounts > Advanced, the option Use IDLE command if supported by server" is checked, and cannot be changed. Is there a way to turn off IDLE support for an account using a terminal command?
Any advice on a way to bypass the conflict between Mail 3.x and Ipswitch Mail will be appreciated.

  • Mac mail 4.5 and yahoo mail

Anyone else having problems with mac mail 4.5 and sending mail with yahoo.mail server.  Mine is so erratic It's driving me crazy.  It works fine for a while then all of sudden it will just stop working for days at a time.  This happens without me changing any settings whatsoever.  I have other mail programs using the same servers AND THEY WORK FINE.  So this is total crap.  When I try getting help from my ISP they said it is a mac mail problem.  When I try to get help from APPLE (which is pretty much non existant) they say its an ISP problem.  The only thing I know is that its' my problem and I've given both these companies tons of money and they've left me hanging out in the breeze with arguably the most basic and important funciton of having a computer and an internet connection.  Screw them all I say.
Anyone out there to help with this quandry.  By the way I've used mail connection doctor.  It has problem connecting to the outgoing server, but then it does and says all is fine.  But I still cant send mail.  I go back to connecton doctor and do a "check again" and now it CANT connect.  Jeez this is just awful

I finally got my "Send" to work:

  • Nokia 5800 - 'Mail for Exchange' and 'Nokia mail'....

Ok may be a silly question but while looking through my 'installed apps' on my 5800, since i was thinking of 'clearing some stuff out' to make that little bit more memory on the phone (Currently I'm ~ 3/4 full)
I noticed that although MOST of them (games etc) are already on my memory card there's a few stuck on the phone.
Many I guess can't be removed (such as 'Symbian OS' stuff, 'OVI Maps' or other 'OVI Store' stuff) but what about programs that seem to be 'duplicates' (i.e. seem to do the same thing) ??
Why should I have 2 'Map' programs or 2 'Email' program etc ??
In particular - why should I need to have 'Mail for Exchange' AND 'Nokia Mail' installed at the same time. Both are ~ 1Mb each and both seem to be related to 'Getting Emails onto the phone'
Can't I just stick to one one them - say 'Nokia Mail' & remove 'Mail for Exchange' ??
Doinf so will only free up 1Mb of phone memory, but it'll help - or does one program rely on the other ??
    Thanks in advance
P.S. I've just noticed there's a couple of other programs 'In Phone memory' that seem suspicious.
One is called 'Chinese Lion (164Kb Supplier: QTEL) and the other is called 'Diamonds' (102kb Supplier: WANGP) - anyone know what these are ??
    Motto: Illegitimis non carborundum

Most users don't need both, but each has a different purpose which is why both are offered. Nokia Messaging is Nokia's in-house push mail service available for all consumers (currently it requires a certain type of operator subscription, but I understand that is about to change so that it is open to all). Mail for Exchange is primarily for business users whose company uses Microsoft Exchange for corporate mail.
Likewise, you don't need to Maps apps - GPS-equipped phones always have Nokia/Ovi Maps preisntalled, unless youe phone is an operator-variant from a network which has its own GPS service or you bought the phone second-hand from somebody else, I don't see why it would have another similar application.
For general memory management, this post which I made in reply to another user with memory issues may help:

If I use the iCloud suggested settings as per:

  • Mail expunge error and old mail switching to new mail status

Everything started when I set to enabled in mail-general-when searching mail boxes: include encrypted pages.
I was looking for a way to seach in the content of the message for the mails.
Then the first error appeared: the mails when I read those mails returned by themselves to the state of unread.
Then I disabled again the optin: mail-general-when searching mail boxes: include encrypted pages,
but the error continued. and all my mails (more than 1200) were set automatically to the "new" mail status each time that I started the mail program.
Now I created a mailbox named "old" when I move the new messages that I have read to that file.
But now the mail program uses the memory constantly.
with out the mail, the computer memory is near 5%, but when I start the mail program and use it constantly, the memory goes to 100% until I receive the mail expunge error.
The machine has 4Ghz ram, and the mail program uses all until I got the error, I am using a G5, dual cpu, 2ghz, mac osx server. There are no other programs using the memory.
1)how can I configure the mail to avoid the expunge error?
2)how I can configure the mail to keep the mails that I just read to an old state (avoiding those to restart their state to "new")?
3)it is possible to do searchs in all the content of the messages?
    thanks
    Alberto

    You’re welcome.
Well, not knowing what the problem really is, and since it apparently started to happen after you changed some settings, I’d try setting up Mail again from scratch and import your mail back afterwards.
Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all the filesystem issues, if any, and making sure that there’s enough space available on the startup disk, try this:
    1. If you have a .Mac account and .Mac synchronization of Mail data is enabled either in Mail > Preferences > General or in System Preferences > .Mac, disable it before proceeding.
    2. Quit Mail if it’s running.
    3. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/. Move (not copy) the entire Mail folder out of there, to the Desktop.
    4. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Preferences/. Locate com.apple.mail.plist and move it to the Desktop.
    5. Open Mail and set it up again from scratch. If given the option to import existing mailboxes or something like that, don’t. Just enter the account information and check that everything works fine.
    6. You’ll have to re-configure all your settings in Mail > Preferences. For spam-related security reasons, the first thing you should do is go to Preferences > Viewing and disable Display remote images in HTML messages if it’s enabled.
    7. If Mail works fine now and you had any messages stored in local mailboxes, do File > Import Mailboxes, choose Mail for Mac OS X as the data format, and follow the instructions to import your mail from the old Mail folder that’s now on the Desktop. Import the Mailboxes folder first, then each of the POP-username@mailserver account folders, if any.
    8. If .Mac synchronization of Mail data was enabled at the beginning, enable it again, go to System Preferences > .Mac > Advanced, click Reset Sync Data, and choose the appropriate options to reset the Mail data stored on the .Mac server with the data locally stored on the computer, i.e. sync data must flow from the computer to the .Mac server.
As a result of doing the above, some messages may be duplicated. Andreas Amann’s Mail Scripts has a Remove Duplicates script that you may find useful.
If all is well and you don’t miss anything, the files on the Desktop can be deleted, although you may want to keep them for a while, just in case.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. You can easily locate any of the folders referred to in this post by copying the folder path here, doing Go > Go to Folder in the Finder, and pasting the folder path there.

  • Not receiving mail to .mac and other mail issue's

    HI all
OK first up I cannot recieve any mail to my @mac.com address, when ever I try to send a test email to myself I recieve a bounced email back saying that 'Delivery to the following recipient failed permanently' I have read discussions on this matter and understand that I should be able to recieve email to this address as it is still in use for .mac users despite the iCloud change over but haven't been able to resolve this problem so far.
I also have a @me.com address which appears to recieve mail ok but would like to continue recieving mail to my @mac.com.
Secondly, I am only able to recieve mail to my @me.com address as when I try to send from this account I recieve a 'Cannot send message using the server iCloud' yet I am able to send mail from a different @me.com address that I created when iCloud was set out.
Both the @mac.com and @me.com addresses are original addresses from when thos services were first brought about but both have problems since the iCloud change over, @me.com addresses that I have created since the iCloud change over appear to work fine.
I let Lion set up all of my iCloud stuff through system preferences when it was rolled out and therefore has set up the mail preferences which are as follows :
In the address field I have both my @mac.com and @me.com seperated by a comma ([email protected], [email protected])
Incoming mail server is p02-imap-mail.me.com which I greyed out !?!
Under advanced is Port: 993, Use SSL: Checked, Authentication: Apple Token
Outgoing mail server: iCloud, however when I clicked on the edit SMTP server list iCloud SMTP is not in the list
    Thankyou !

Immediately contact Apple. Call a Genius and at least leave Apple some feedback. This should not be happening. It was indeed promised by Apple that all @mac.com addresses and aliases would remain functional if you had any of them before the switch to iCloud. They are still working for me, luckily.
Also, try changing the incoming and outgoing mail servers. Up until last week I was happily using POP with iCloud until – bam! – Apple decided to only support IMAP from then on. This change left me no option but to change to IMAP. My incoming server address is slightly different from yours. Maybe changing it to the new (?) address will solve your problem. At least it's worth a try, I'd say.
In my Mail.app Accounts preference pane, the IMAP server address is p99-imap.mail.me.com. I remember when setting up IMAP that the summary listed this same address as the incoming server. It doesn't show up in my SMTP server list either. So that should be normal behaviour, I guess.
    Good luck!

  • The fonts all turned bold even in sites and even in mails for read and unread mails.

When I visit any sites, the fonts on my browser turns bold. Even when in my e-mail accounts (yahoo, gmail), my read and unread mails/messages are both in bold. Why? What Should I do?

Such an error can indicate a problem with a missing or corrupted font.
You can try to run the System File Checker program to see if that fixes it.

  • Forwarded mail account delay and unauthorized mail in outgoing queue

Two issues I'm having and can't pin down:
    1. One of the accounts I have has his mail forwarded to another account, recently there has been quite a delay in him receiving his mail, is there anything in the server set-up that could be delaying the sending of his messages out?
    2. I am finding a lot of messages that are not from accounts on the server (obvious spam accounts) and are not being sent to accounts on the server. How can I have the server only accept requests to send mail from authorized users.
Thanks in advance for any help on these issues.

Regarding first issue of delays, you can get more info in a couple of ways....
    1. Get your client to expand a 'late' received message to show full headers and then forward this to you. You will be able to see from the headers where the delay is happening since every receipt along the line is time stamped.
    2. Search your server's mail.log for your client's incoming/outgoing mail. You will be able to fully track the progress through your server, culminating in the final sending to their account box (or relay out if being forwarded). See below for info on tracing messages through mail.log.
Regarding second issue, your mynetworks contains the subnet 216.153.138.0/24. This subnet contains all 254 public IPs from 216.153.138.1-254. I doubt if that is what you want since any public IP in that range can relay through your server freely. Maybe it is just the one IP you want? If so, just specify the IP and drop the "/24".
Apart from that, the only way someone can relay out to a domain outwith your 'mydestination' list is to authenticate as legitimate user first. If the outgoing 'spam' is not coming from one of the opened public IPs then you may well have a cracked username/password. There are other possibilities too, like a spamming local computer or hacked server, so more info would be required to diagnose. If you scan through the mail.log, are there a LOT of messages getting sent out all during the same one period? (like several per minute for twenty minutes or longer).
EDIT: Also, take at look at Pterobyte's 'Frontline Spam Defense' doc at http://osx.topicdesk.com/content/category/4/18/62/
Excellent guide on how to tighten up your anti-spam.

    TRACING MESSAGES PROGRESS THROUGH MAIL.LOG
When a connection is first made you will get the following log message...
    Aug 26 15:38:32 blue postfix/smtpd\[13201\]: connect from mail.hostname\[194.97.214.186\]
After the 'rcpt to' command is given by the sending server (which is done prior to sending actual mail message) then you will see this log message...
    Aug 26 15:39:10 blue postfix/smtpd\[13201\]: 40329F9A2D: client=mail.hostname\[194.97.214.186\]
Note that the same smtpd process number (13201) is used for both these messages.
After end of 'data' command, i.e., message completed, then you get...
    Aug 26 15:39:33 blue postfix/cleanup\[13205\]: 40329F9A2D: message-id=<[email protected]>
    Aug 26 15:39:33 blue postfix/qmgr\[13190\]: 40329F9A2D: from=<[email protected]>, size=357, nrcpt=1 (queue active)
Note the message id (40329F9A2D) links this to the previous log message.
Thereafter you get the handoff to amavisd (on 127.0.0.1) for spam analysis , etc. followed by delivery to local mailbox.
So to trace the history of an email, you often start at the more recent event, where the "from=" gives you the senders email address. You note the message id and look back for the previous smtpd message which uses this. This message, in turn, will give you the smtpd process number which enables you to find the very first contact.

Consistency is not there.  I check my junk folder as well and the messages do not go there.  I used to have a couple of macs on my network with the same email address, but I've since removed those accounts off the other computers.  It is setup as IMAP account as well.

I just got an iPod Touch, and when I connect it the sync program starts. The only issue I have is a conflict between my email accounts on .mac and mail. I have selected the one I want to use for the correct account information, but it does not save the information (regardless which one I choose). When I try to change the mail account on my computer the changes don't save. I assumed the settings would transfer to .mac, but apparently not and I can't find where to make the changes. Thanks.

  • Can I sync Mac mail w/iphone and Yahoo mail?

I'm used to checking my Yahoo mail on my Mac using the mail program (not Mobile Me). Now that I've got an iPhone it checks it on Yahoo mail and uses Yahoo mail folders. I've got lots of stuff stored on my Mac in mail folders and still prefer to check my mail there. When I send a mailnote from my Mac it, obviously, doesn't show up in my sent mail in Yahoo. Is there a way to sync all of this? I really prefer the Mac mail interface than Yahoo's web browser interface. Also, the filters (a.k.a. rules) work way better in Mail.
Thoughts or am I missing something?
    Thanks.
    -Robin

    Robin,
iTunes will sync the email account settings to the iPhone, not the actual emails and folders.
When you setup the account on the iPhone, by tapping Add Account> Yahoo!> entering you account info, it is setup as a IMAP account.
Heres a thread discussing not being able to setup up a Yahoo! IMAP account on a Mac or PC: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1020969
You can contact Yahoo! support here: http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/mail/
Also you can workaround the issue by setting up a MobileMe or Gmail IMAP account.
