Mail 4.5 SMTP Server Rejecting Password for Outgoing Mail

I just set up Mail 4.5 and am receiving incoming mails but can't send out my emails. I get a message saying the SMTP server rejected the password. I know it's the correct password, have entered it a few times now. I'd appreciate any advice. thnx

Hi Jan ...
From the Mail menu bar click Mail > Preferences then select the Accounts tab then the Account Information tab.
Select the account on the left.
Make sure the SMTP server is selected where you see:  Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)
Quit then relaunch Mail to test.
If the correct server is already selected, open Keychain Access located in /Applications/Utilities
Select Passwords on the left.
Use the search field top right corner of the window to find the email account. Then right or control click the keychain then click Delete.
Go back to the Account Information tab in Mail > Preferences. Type in the correct password. You should be prompted to save that password to a new keychain. Click Yes.

  • Smtp server rejects password for outgoing mail

I can receive, but not send messages from my imac and get the message the SMTP server "smtp.tiscali.co.uk" rejected the password for user ".........".
This has just suddenly started happening. I enter what I know to be the password but it is rejected, so I have to send via webmail (now talktalk, not tiscali) or iphone. I have looked on here before and tried re-entering password/changing the port but to no avail. Flummoxed.

  • Mail one one computer (but not in another) rejects passwords for outgoing mail. Once it functioned.

I have an iMAC      (2007) and a MacbookPro (more recent). The iMAC's updated Mail keeps rejecting my outgoing mail, although I have checked passwords and reinstalled accounts. Incoming mail is OK. The problem occurred in the Macbook, but the problem is far less acute. A formum suggestion was to go into Library/Mail... but when I go into Library, there is no item Mail. Although my location is Italy, the Library is all in English, so i do not think there is a linguistic problem involved. In your answer, imagine I am an adolescent (and not 72 as is really the case) and kindly be explicit. ... with thanks in advance.

    Hi DSfromMO2,
I have this happening to me too... it is frustrating enough for me to pitch my computer out the 4th floor office window.  I found somewhere on these forums a solution which worked for me, but only for a short time.  I'm back to having this stupid glitch.  Anyway, the "temporary" solution seems to be to boot into Safe Mode by holding the Shift button down when you hear the startup chime, then let go when you see the Apple logo on the screen.  You'll see you've done it right because it'll say Safe Mode somewhere on screen (upper right hand corner?).  Restart again normally and your Mail should be free from these weird demons, but they'll be back.

    Hi
You need to check with your ISP whether or not the send mail server (SMTP) requires a password.  Some do, but many do not.  When you know the correct password to send mail, then you need to tell Mail as follows:
Mail menu > Preferences > Accounts > Select the account
Click on the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) combo box, and select Edit SMTP Server List...
In the Account Information tab put the server name
In the Advanced Tab, set up the authentication information from your ISP.
    Good luck

  • I need to change my password for outgoing mail server but it won't let me

I Need to change my password for outgoing mail server on iPad 2 but it won't let me change it. I can't send out mail

I assume that you mean that the setting is grayed out and that is what "it won't let me" means. Have you tried selecting another SMTP server of you have another one available in the settings?

Upgraded to Mavericks. Calendar.app asks for password to sync calendar to Exchange account. Exchange server rejects password.  Had to go to Outlook (ugh!) in order to work (this suck!).  Please help!

Wanted to chime in and say I'm having the same problem. Had to go back to Outlook which feels ancient. Hope Apple fixes this soon.

  • Comcast POP Server Rejecting Password & Now Dysfunctional (Keychain?)

I'm starting a new thread because a related topic "POP server rejecting password" is marked answered, but for Charter, which solution will not work with Comcast. Comcast has advised that some problems are stemming from internal changes (commencing near the end of November 2007) mandated by the FCC to improve security. But, given that I can access the Comcast email account remotely via my Treo Smartphone (using Sprint), and via Comcast Webmail, makes me think that my Mac (OS 10.4.8) and/or Mail application may also be culpable.
I specifically am having a problem with a Comcast email POP server, but not two other POP inboxes hosted by another, unrelated ISP, also managed by Mail.
When I open Mail, the Comcast mailboxes (both inbox and sent) are grayed out with a ~ next to them--I've never seen a ~ before. The other two mailbox pairs (the non-Comcast ISP) work normally. Selecting Mail's Connection Doctor produces the results: "Connection and login to server succeeded" for the Comcast POP and "Connection to server succeeded, no login required" for the Comcast SMTP--no difference when compared with the results for the other, non-Comcast ISP mail accounts. This is notably different from posts in the other thread.
Historically, I'd occasionally (perhaps monthly or so) get the popup request "Enter Password for Account..." Comcast previously conveyed that such treatment is normal. I perhaps could have alleviated this by adding the response to the keychain, but never bothered. Problems began yesterday when typing in the correct password resulted in the same request, repeatedly without end.
Called Comcast tech support (three times now), verifying that the Mail application is set up OK. They acknowledged that they were experiencing some server outages, but that was unlikely the issue since I could access such via Comcast webmail. Of course, they referred me to Apple--my Mac "had to be the problem."
The other topic suggested, perhaps, that keychain was at fault. So, using the Keychain Access utility, deleted all items. I was motivated to do this anyway based on speculation last week by the Trash It scriptware developer that I may have keychain corruption, as regarded another, hopefully unrelated problem, now resolved, having to do with attempting to eliminate "localized.rsrc" files from the trash via the Terminal command "sudo rm -R ~/.Trash/*" returning the error "...(my formal user account name) is not in the sudors file."
Pulling my hair out on this one.

Comcast fixed the problem they were having with their server(s). No explanation, of course. Guess the problem was theirs entirely--no fault on our side.
Thanks David for your insight on what the (~) meant. Tried going online, but upon Mail checking, the affected mailbox immediately again went back offline--at least until Comcast fixed its end.
As regards the POP servers, yes I suspect there are intervening servers (PoP or otherwise) between users and the underlying database holding the email. All Comcast would acknowledge is that customer service representatives access the same customer email repository as do individual customers themselves, whether by POP or Webmail (Duh).

  • Outgoing server rejects password; can't send mail

Today, for no apparent reason, I can't send out any mail. No hardware, no software changes. (I'm use Mail 2.0.7 with my iMac G5.)
When I try to send mail I get this message: "The SMTP server “outgoing.yahoo.verizon.net” rejected the password for user “carolbenham”
My provider — Verizon DSL — took me through their process and the password I'm entering is correct and works for both signing in, sending and receiving e-mail on my their web page e-mail. It ONLY doesn't work with Mac's Mail program. Only Mac's Mail program says the correct password is rejected.
    Idea anybody? I'm desperate!

Thanks Simon. I'm keeping that fix in mind for next time. For no reason whatsoever, Mail.app stopped asking me for a password (and then rejecting it) after the computer had been unused and asleep for a couple of hours. It sent all the outgoing mail automatically as soon as I launched the program.
    Too strange!

  • Mail: outgoing and now incoming mail server rejects password

Hello all. Hope you can help with this one.
I was using Mail as normal yesterday. I use the same incoming mail server and SMTP server (my university's Exchange server). Then sending mail suddenly failed. The error message I get is:
The SMTP server “exch.wlv.ac.uk” rejected the password for user “(null)”
Enter your password again or cancel.
The settings are port 995 for outgoing mail, using SSL and requiring password authentication.
I've verified my settings and passwords with IT support. They say they haven't altered anything, and nor have I.
I've tried Connection Doctor: it says Mail connected with the exch. server without any problems. However, under Account Information, the server says (offline).
I've changed ports (to 25 and 587): no success.
I've deleted my password from Keychain and Mail plist and reentered it. No success.
    I've verified and repaired permissions.
I'm now not getting incoming mail either: the error message is
There may be a problem with the mail server or network. Verify the settings for account “Staff POP” or try again.
The server returned the error: The connection to host exch.wlv.ac.uk on port 25 failed.
I can send and receive using web-based OWA.
Is there anything else I can do, or is it a server problem?
    Thanks,
    Aidan

May be no help to you Aidan except comfort in numbers. Mail has started behaving erratically for me in the past week. My inbox and account mail has disappeared and my accounts keep being rejected by the webmail host similar to your problem; password rejected etc.  Then Mail closes abruptly telling me there's a problem and offering to send a report to Apple. Mail is version 4.5 and the iMac is 10.6.8. Help!

  • Mail server rejected password

The SMTP server "smtp.mac.com" rejected the password for user "XXX" Please re-enter your password or cancel.
This is the error I am getting on my laptop and on my iphone. It started on June 5th and now I can't receive any emails.
I have OS 10.4.11 an my iphone version is 2.2.1
I have read other people recently having similar problem with their Yahoo accounts(and didn't find a working solution), but I am using only Apple's Mail.
    Thank you for any help.

Problem resolved after renewing my MobileMe account with a credit card that hadn't been canceled.

  • Can't log in to my (mobileme) email on Mail/Server rejecting password, Can't log in to my (mobileme) email on Mail/Server rejecting password

    Hi all,
I went to check my email in mail last night and my mobileme account was offline. (Gmail account is online no problem). I clicked to take it back online, but it wouldn't accept my password. My parents also have this address on their mail (2 x macbook pros on lion, 2 x iphone 4, 1 x ipad4 -if this is relevant!) as its our main business account. The same situation was on their devices.
I came into the studio this morning and tried the following on my computer:
-Re-setting password on iforgot. (This took a few attempts as I can't use alternative email address as it doesn't work and is years old, and it kept telling me my security question (Bday) was wrong when it was correct...) I got there in the end and changed the password successfully.
-Went to remove keychain, but there was nothing there at all for the account
-Deleting account and re-setting up. This didnt work, as it wouldnt accept my password (new or old).
This happened a few weeks ago as well, and resetting the password and resetting the account worked.
I also did the same on my parents devices, and the new account was set up fine, so we can at least access the emails via their computers.
The differences between the computers, and what I'm guessing the problem is, I am on Snow leopard (10.6.8), on old version of mail (4.5) and obviously not connected to icloud. They are on lion and the latest versions of mail, and on icloud.
I desperately don't want to upgrade to lion as I run lots of expensive software off my machine, (photoshop, illustrator, indesign, after effects etc) and don't want lion to mess them up.
Do you think the fact i'm on such an old version is the problem? Why would the account have been taken offline on the other devices initally though?
I have had different messages popping up:
"The MobileMe IMAP server “mail.me.com” rejected the password for user...."
"Logging in to the MobileMe IMAP server “mail.me.com” failed. Make sure the user name and password you entered are correct, then click Continue. If the information isn’t correct, you cannot receive messages."
And something about the certificate not being secure.
Sorry, this has been all over the place - very behind now and rushing!! Hope it makes sense and someone can help soon, as I need to send a ton of emails this afternoon off my machine! :-) Thanks in advance!!

You can continue to run most PowerPC software in Mt. Lion by installing Snow Leopard Server into Parallels 8:

  • Rejected password for mail account...

    Hello.
How can I remedy this ongoing issue of the Mail program asking for the password multiple times per week? (quite often, I'll have to enter it 20 times in the course of 5 minutes for it to actually get accepted).
I'm amazed that this hasn't been fixed yet, but until that happens, how can I temporarily remedy it?
This is the prompt that I get:
The POP server “mail.comcast.net” rejected the password for user “alexguitar1”
Please re-enter your password, or cancel.
    thank you.

Check out your Keychain Access (Applications > Utilities > Keychain Access). Two things you can do:
    1. check whether you have two or more keychains for your email account - ideally you should have one per mailbox. Delete any extra ones you don't need (check that the password of the remaining one is correct).
    2. Still in Keychain Access, select the Keychain Access menu and choose "Keychain First Aid". You cna verify and repair any Keychain problems here.

  • Exchange 2007 Mail issue, server rejecting password

    Hi all.
We have installed Exchange 2007 server today and configured it and all windows clients and iPhones. windows clients on normal RPC settings and laptops on RPC over HTTP.
Webmail has also been configured which works fine with a trusted root certificate. webmail works fine in safari also.
we have a problem configuring Mail on two SL macbooks. when running the setup and entering the password the client app comes back repeatedly and says 'The Exchange 2007 server “exchange.domain.co.uk” rejected the password for user “username” '
i have tried this on both machines and im kind of stuck since the exchange server is fully function for all other devices.
For info, the exchange server is on SP1 rollup 9. running on windows server 2008 R2 x64
i changed the outgoing server field to be the internal IP just to check and i get the prompt for the SSL (obviously since the SSL does not include the IP. i click to import and accept which it does but i still get my password rejected.
    Any ideas?

Seems like an issue with a December update. I found the following info that basically tells you to go to IIS SSL settings for the OWA (and related sites) and change the client to "accept certificate". It worked for me so hopefully this will help someone else.
The following text was found on:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/exchangesvrgeneral/thread/383d130e -869f-4fce-9502-8b340904b0ba
    EDIT: Found a fix for me potentially via - http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/exchangesvrdeploy/thread/c1e72d 2a-d360-4ff0-b2f5-1a9ae149df18 and http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/list/en-us/default.aspx?dg=micro soft.public.exchange.admin&mid=00d4a681-f588-4eed-b4f8-5c3645e7376c&sloc=en-us
I had an issue similar to this. Win2k3 Ex07. All of my Outlook 2007
users were getting prompted over and over for the username and
password. It wasn't checking the certificate that they had installed
via internet explorer. To fix the problem, I opened IIS on the
Exchange server and checked the following directories under the
default website (the root site(default web site), oab, autodiscover).
Under the directory security tab, click Edit in the Secure
Communications section. I had the require SSL checked and the 128bit
encryption, but under Client Certificates, it was set to ignore. Once
I changed that to Accept for each of the folders, stopped and started
IIS, I stopped being prompted all the time for credentials. Hopefully
this will help someone in the future.
    Just confirmed fixed for client!!!

  • Mail keeps saying "server rejected password

    Hi
Does anyone know why with increasing frequency, when I click "get mail" for my pop account Mail has started to say "server has rejected password" and asks me to re enter the password. I do so putting the correct password in and it keeps coming back with the same message.
Then for no apparent reason it just stops doing that and allows messages to download from my pop account.

I got this problem resolved yesterday with remote assistance from my Bell server. Apparently, my password entry in my Mail Account had been corrupted or changed, so even entering the right password continued to be rejected.
We solved the problem by resetting my email password with my server, then entering the new password in my Account info in Mail.
By the way, my webmail with Bell worked fine, so there was nothing wrong with my settings. That pointed to password problems.
The question remains, though, Why did Mail mess up my password Account entry in the first place?
Hope this helps the rest of you struggling with this really annoying problem.

  • OS Lion Mail: Microsoft Exchange Server Rejects Password

    Hello,
I just upgraded to Lion and was attempting to set up all of my email accounts into Mail. My Yahoo, AOL, and Gmail accounts all worked fine, but my Microsoft Exchange account did not. When I set it up through Settings originally, everything seemed fine and it had no problem verifying the account. However, when I try to retrieve mail from the Exchange account within Mail, it gives me an error saying that the server rejected the password and then prompts me to enter the password again. I enter the correct password, and the same window pops up over and over again. Has anyone found a fix to this problem?
    Thank you!

Same Problem here since days and nobody at Apple is picking it up, even though a lot of people experiencing the same issues.
I Tried deleting all accounts (GMX, Exchange) from Mail 5.0 and create a new one (only Exchange) here: "System Pref". -> "Mail, Contacs & Calendars". Account creation worked, but Mail keeps asking me for the password telling me the server rejected the pw, which is correct (as it worked with the account creation).
To be honest I'm a little disappointed, having switched from PC to Mac earlier this year and never ran into problems with a PC that took me longer than a day to fix (especially on productive systems!), i start to regret buying a mac...
