  • Mail Crashing due to overly large message in OUTbox

I've found much on the discussion board when it comes to messages in the inbox, or in the folders of a mail account, but I am having problems because of a huge message in my outbox (I know, it was dumb for me to try and send it but i was desparate.) So everytime I open mail, it runs and runs and runs and then crashes. If I can get it open and then quickly try to delete the message, it starts to copy the message but then it crashes anyway-- it seems like a run time error only it doesn't give me an error message, it just quits. Is there a way for me to delete this message without it needing to copy itself? I just want to get rid of it so I can go back to using mail! Help please!
    Powerbook   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Quit the Mail.app first and using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Mail > Mailboxes > Outbox.mbox.
The Outbox.mbox represents "Out" in the mailboxes drawer and is shared by all accounts.
Delete the Outbox.mbox and empty the Trash.
Launch Mail and a new Outbox.mbox will be created automatically by Mail within the Mailboxes folder and this should resolve the problem.
FYI - Most ISPs and email account providers have an overall message size limit of 10MB for received and sent messages.
In addition, all attachments must be encoded before being sent. The Mail.app uses MIME 1.0 for attachment encoding which is the internet standard. As a general rule of thumb, MIME encoding increases the size of the pre-encoded file by 50% or so. A pre-encoded file that is 5MB in size will be roughly 7.5MB in size after the encoding process.

  • Mail - Number of Unread messages missing in Mailbox list

Although the number of unread messages is properly shown under Inbox on the Mailboxes list next to two of my three Mail accounts, the other one shows none when there some.  The quantity is also missing from the total number of messages next to Inbox when I collapse the list.  This was working fine for many years.
How can I restore this feature?
    Thanks!!

    Quit Mail.
Back up all data if you haven’t already done so. Before proceeding, you must be sure you can restore your system to the state it’s in now.
In the Finder, select Go ▹ Go to Folder... from the menu bar, copy the text on the line below into the box that opens, and press return:
    ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/Envelope Index
Delete the selected file. Relaunch Mail and test. It should re-index your mailboxes.

  • Mail error "Verify that you have addressed this message correctly. Check your SMTP server settings in Mail preferences and verify any advanced settings with your system administrator.Select a different outgoing mail server from the list"

The Mail application has suddenly started giving error:
"Verify that you have addressed this message correctly. Check your SMTP server settings in Mail preferences and verify any advanced settings with your system administrator.Select a different outgoing mail server from the list"
It was working fine till yesterday, suddenly it stopped. I have 3 email accounts configured here, 2 are on exchange servers and one yahoo. Connection verification works and shows all servers as green.
    Any inputs?

I had 3 accounts, 2 ms exchange accounts and 1 yahoo. After removal of yahoo, everything is back to normal.

  • To create a mailbox in mail the ipad manual says tap edit in the mailbox list. There is no edit in the mailbox list. How do I create a new mailbox?

To create a mailbox in mail the ipad manual says tap edit in the mailbox list. There is no edit in the mailbox list. How do I create a mailbox?

An IMAP configuration will NOT allow one to create mailboxes on one's iPad - from personal experience - one requires a POP account.  Briefly, the Apple Mail app for iOS 6 (iPad, iPhone) has no capability to add mailboxes to the original ones that are included as part of the app - if (and only if) the email account is configured as IMAP.  So... Keniff is correct: One must go to one's laptop/desktop, open a browser, and add the mailboxes desired for your IMAP account. Unfortunately, one seems to have little choice for the account configuration.  Apple's iOS does the configuration quite automatically with one's account provider. For example, my Charter mail is IMAP while my Gmail account is POP.  The latter allows edit/add for new or existing mailboxes on my iPad 2.

  • Mail: Show Mailbox List no longer default

In Mail 5.2, how do I make Show Mailbox List the default like it always has been until recently, making me click Show, or Shift, Command M ?

I spent 3 hours on the phone with Apple about this working with a senor tech.  It is supposed to work.  He seemed to feel that something happened during migration of files (in my case).  Nothing I did got it to show.
What he did as a temporary fix is make a file which I called On My Mac, then moved my mailboxes into that so I can open or close it.
I use Gmail.  He had me set up a new administrator and it showed Smart Mailboxes but then disappeared.
He is sending this on to techs since it is a problem.  I also told him to look around the forums because this is a problem that others are having.
When I get an answer I'll post it here.

  • Mail mailbox list not hiding

I have 10.9.1 on my iMac. Yesterday I pressed the "show" button to view the mailbox list. For some reason, it won't hide when I press "hide", the keyboard shortcut, or the appropriate button in the menu bar.

I had this issue happen today. I tried closing apps, restarting, etc. What finally worked was opening and closing Calendar. Went back to Mail and it the hide/show button worked again.
Incidentally, I acted on an event invitation request in Calendar when it was open for that brief period but I don't think that would have anything to do with it.

  • I open Mail, and a new message screen comes up.  I cannot get rid of it, and I cannot get to the mail in my mailbox???

When I try to open my mail (not IMail) a new message screen comes up on my iPad  (version 8.1.3 (12B466), and I cannot cancel it; it prevents me from getting to the mail in that mailbox.

Try a reset: Simultaneously hold down the Home and On buttons until the device shuts down. Ignore the off slider if it appears. Once shut down is complete, if it doesn't restart on it own, turn the device back on using the On button. In some cases it also helps to double click the Home button and close all apps BEFORE doing the reset.

  • I have a new iPhone 6 plus and all is OK. But the mail shows more than 400 'unread' messages whereas there are none in the mailbox or trash or anywhere else I have looked. I can send and receive with no problem. I'm sure I have no unread messages.

        jsavage9621,
It pains me to hear about your experience with the Home Phone Connect.  This device usually works seamlessly and is a great alternative to a landline phone.  It sounds like we've done our fair share of work on your account here.  I'm going to go ahead and send you a Private Message so that we can access your account and review any open tickets for you.  I look forward to speaking with you.

  • In Mail I'm unable to see the mailboxes at the top of the mailbox list. I can see trash but not inbox. What do I need to do to see the entire list of mailboxes?

I cannot see all of my mailboxes in my mailbox list.

I'm guessing you are seeing the Trash in the Favorites bar.
Select Show Mail box list. If you don't see the Mailboxes icon, under View in the Menu bar select Show Mail Box List. (wording might be different in Mountain Lion).
If you still have problems, Log out under the Apple in the Menu bar. Log into Guest User. Open Mail, do you see the Mailboxes icon now?

  • I am sending a mass e-mail out to my mailing list and the mail program gets locked up and stops responding before sending the e-mail?

I am sending a mass e-mail out to my mailing list and the mail program gets locked up and stops responding before sending the e-mail.  How can I fix this issue?  I have done it in the past successfully.

Holly, how many are you sending to?
Are you using the To; or BCC: field?
    Individual names or Groups?
I suspect one malformed address at the moment without much else to go on.

  • Apple Mail mailbox list icon display size

I can not find how to change the size of the mailbox icons in Apple mail!  They are big now, and I want the icons to be smaller so I can see more.  I am talking about the left column in Apple Mail where the mailboxes are displayed.  I have the latest verison of Lion.  I am sure it is simple, but I can not find it!
    Kevin

The setting is not in an obvious place, but is where logic places it. Consider that that part of the Mail window is a Sidebar....
Go to System Preferences > General and in the middle part of that screen is a pulldown menu to set the icon size in the Sidebar. Reset that. You can leave the Mail window open while you make that change; the change is 'live' so you'll see the effect immediately.

  • Notes mailbox list color is black on black

I just installed Snow Leopard and discovered that when I create a new note in Mail.app, the note shows up in the list with a fore- and background color of black.
Only new notes have this problem, my older notes show up fine (black text on white background).
I cannot find a setting to set the background color of notes in the mailbox. Although I have many rules set up, I do not have any rule that sets the background color to black, so I do not know what is causing this.
Is there a way to change the background color of notes (or messages) in a mailbox list that does not involve a rule?
    Thanks,
    -dZ.

    Wow dude, you're good.
Thanks a ton.  Something so minor made me pull my hair out today.

  • Replied to icon in mailbox lists

    Hi,
I've had this issue before, and been able to fix it, but now I am no longer able to fix it or find what I may have done before
In a nutshell, the little icon in mailbox lists that indicates that a message has been replied to forwarded, etc, and that links to that said reply.. is no longer linking to the reply for me. In other words, it used to be that I could look at my inbox and see that a message had been replied to, and then I could click on that icon to go to the reply. The link no longer works.
I have rebuilt my mailboxes and I have rebuilt the overall Envelope Index file, with no success. Any suggestions?

your Mail preferences may be corrupt. quit Mail and delete (or move to the desktop) the file ~/library/preferences/com.apple.mail.plist. ~ means your home directory. you can get to it by clicking on the house icon in the sidebar of any finder window or by going to /users/username.
then start Mail. you'll have to recreate all your email accounts so make sure you know all their settings. once recreated they will recognize their existing mailboxes. see if Mail behaves after that.
Alternatively, if you have a backup, restore com.apple.mail.plist from backup from before the problems with Mail started. Mail should not be running when you do this.

  • Applescript & Mail: fail reading from list

I'm trying to write a script to mark duplicates in a mailbox by creating a list of existing message IDs and mark the ones already in the list. While it does create the correct list, duplicate IDs won't be detected. Is there a bug or is it my script?
    try
    tell application "Mail"
set msg_count to count of message in message viewer 1
    if msg_count = 0 then
display dialog "Please select the folders you want to scan for duplicates." with icon 1 buttons {"Okay"} default button 1
    else
set all_msg to (every message in message viewer 1)
    set id_list to {}
    set dup_count to 0
    repeat with this_msg in all_msg
    try
set msg_id to (content of every header of this_msg whose name is "Message-ID")
    on error
    set msg_id to ""
set background color of this_msg to blue
    end try
if msg_id is in id_list then --problem here?
set background color of this_msg to gray
    set dup_count to dup_count + 1
else if msg_id is not "" then
set the end of id_list to msg_id
    end if
    set msg_count to msg_count - 1
    if msg_count mod 100 = 0 and msg_count > 0 then say (msg_count as string) & " messages remaining"
    end repeat
    --choose from list id_list
    if dup_count is 0 then
    say "done. no duplicates found"
    else
    say "done. " & dup_count & " duplicates found."
    end if
    end if
    end tell
on error the error_message number the error_number
-- don't display error message if the user canceled a dialog within the [try] and [on error] lines above
if the error_number is not -128 then
    set the error_text to "Error: " & the error_number & ". " & the error_message
display dialog the error_text buttons {"Cancel"} default button 1
    else
    error number -128
    end if
    end try

Well, I was thinking maybe the message id is, by default, set as list item instead of string and that might be the reason why it can't find it in the list though the list contains the id. So I just edited it and it works!
I forgot to mention that the script was taken from <a href=http://homepage.mac.com/barryw/">Barry Wainwright's "Remove Duplicates" for Entourage.
    Here's the edited blocks:
    <pre>repeat with this_msg in all_msg
    try
set msg_id to (content of every header ¬
    of this_msg whose name is "Message-ID") ¬
as string -- problem was here
if msg_id is "" then set background color ¬
    of this_msg to blue
    end try
if msg_id is in id_list then
set background color of this_msg to gray
set flagged status of this_msg to ¬
    true -- for easy deletion
    set dup_count to dup_count + 1
else if msg_id is not "" then
set the end of id_list to msg_id
    end if
    set msg_count to msg_count - 1
    if msg_count mod 100 = 0 and msg_count > 0 ¬
then say (msg_count as string) ¬
    & " messages remaining"
    end repeat
    if dup_count is 0 then
    say "done. no duplicates found"
else if dup_count is 1 then
    say "done. 1 duplicate found"
-- sometimes you only find one
    else
    say "done. " & dup_count & " duplicates found."
    end if
    </pre>
