Mail 6.2 IMAP account removes messages from server
I've been running Mail fine for years but when I upgraded the Macbook Pro from Snow Leopard to 10.8.2 Mail began to remove messages from my mail server even though it is an IMAP account.
It is set to keep copies for offline use.
The exact same setup works fine on Snow Leopard in the iMac.
There are no plugins in Mail on the MBP/ML setup.
Have I missed some obvious setting?
Update - Attempted the following to resolve with no success:
Shutdown and restart Mail
Restart MacBook
Disable and enable Exchange account
Monitored the Activity window and everything looked OK.
Review with Connection Doctor. An interesting observation of the Detail screen of Connection Doctor is that I did not see any activity for my Exchange domain. Activity was listed for all other email accounts except the Exchange account. Hmmm......
Finally had to remove the Exchange account and re-create it. Only then did the recent and other email appear.
Arrrrgggghhhh......

Note that this setting may have no effect if you start a new message while a VIP or smart mailbox is selected in the mailbox list. Those are saved searches, not actual mailboxes.
If the problem remains, select the Accounts tab in the preference dialog, then select the affected account in the list on the left.
In the Account Information pane, select the correct server in the menu labeled
Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)
If there's only one server in the menu, select
Edit SMTP Server List...
and add a new server with the correct settings. If you're not sure how to do that, try the Mail Settings Lookup.
Another possibility is that the wrong card in your address book is selected as yours. Select your card in the Contacts application. Then select
Card ▹ Make This My Card
from the menu bar. -
Mail isn't removing messages from server
I just got an iPad Mini and set it up to check my POP e-mail accounts. I set it up exactly the way I had my iPhone, so that when I delete a message from the iPad it removes that message from the server. That way any mail I don't want to deal with twice won't be there when I get home.
Unfortunately it isn't working. I check mail on the iPad throughout the day, deleting the stuff I don't need. When I get home, every single message downloads.
is this feature broken in the latest iOS update, or is there something I'm doing wrong? I've been searching online and so far I cannot find anyone else who has documented this issue.Okay, I'm with you part of the way. Can't remove messages from server
Mail has randomly been failing to remove downloaded messages from the two independent servers that host our e-mail accounts. We've verified that all accounts have "remove copy.........: Right Away" selected in Advanced Preferences. Have gone so far as to deselect, close mail, and then open and reselect. Have also delected the MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded2 file for each mailbox but the problem comes back after a few download cycles.
We've also found one account where "Get Info" showed no messages on the server but logging in to that account using webmail showed 79 messages present.
Must add that it deletes some messages and leaves others with no discernable pattern.
We've repaired permissions, etc. but the problem persists.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Powerbook G4 Mac OS X (10.4.8)Just when I thought the problem was solved - went all day yesterday without a hitch - this morning it left over 20 messages on the server immediately after the first "download" of the morning. Last night Mail was closed and the machine was in sleep mode. Opened mail and after it had completed the download went to the server and checked.
So far there have been no reoccurrences. Will set up another machine to remove after moving from the Inbox and see what happens.

IOS 8.12 Apple Mail for Exchange Account Deletes Message from Server
Both my computers are set to leave Exchange emails on the server, but I can't find how to set this on my iPhone. So, if I happen to first open a message on my phone, it's no longer available when I open Apple Mail on either of my computers. I need the messages on my iMac and MacBook Pro--not just on my iPhone. How can I change the settings on my iPhone so that Exchange doesn’t delete messages once they're downloaded to the phone? Thanks in advance for any guidance you can offer. --Bill
Thanks, Glenn. I get as far as the Advanced Settings screen, and there are 3 items for choices:
• Use SLL - on
• Move Discarded Messages into:
Deleted Mailbox - check
Archive Mailbox - not checked
• S/MIME
S/MIME - off
I don't see how I can choose to NOT delete messages. (I'm assuming that the Move Discarded Messages into: Deleted Mailbox is a setting to tell iOS 8 what to do with a message that I choose to delete from my iPhone.)
Any further guidance?

I have a hotmail accout. When the emails have downloaded and I "Get Account Info" in Messages on server it shows all the messages I have just downloaded if I switch to That have been downloaded to my Mac the display it is blank. Also if I delete the downloaded messages and then get new info. All the messages are downloaded again and the count of new messages increases (this increases every time I Get New Messaages) .See:

How do I make Mail remove junk/deleted messages from the server? The only option tht works for me now is the "Remove from server" button at Account Info > Messages on server. What am I doing wrong?

Mac Mail Always Removing Messages from Hotmail
I have a Hotmail account that dates back to 2005 and I have recently bought a new Macbook Pro and Mountain Lion. It took about 2 days to download all my messages into Mail.
The problem is that my Mail started to get delayed coming through and then stop occasionaly with a Port 995 error.
If I check the activity window I can see the potential problem but I don't know how to solve it:
The activity window says 'Fetching new mail' and underneath this it says 'Removing message x of 43,583' (x being the message number being removed)
I use my laptop pretty much all day, but somewhere along the line the process restarts and so it never finishes to remove the messages and this is obviously holding up the server.
Would anyone have a solution to this?
ThanksHaving monitored the situation, it appears to be a software issue. There is in infinite loop with removing messages from the server. I found it completes the removal and then begins again holding up the server.
Every time it completes the 'removal' my new messages are downloaded. After this the 'removal process' beings again in the activity window! -

IMAP and deleting messages from the server
Anyone else trying to use IMAP in the default mail app and seeing that messages deleted locally are not removed from the server?
I found a lot of posts about this issue on older Android versions and devices, but nothing for the Bionic yet.
And unlike for POP accounts, there is not an option in the settings to turn this on. IMAP is all about keeping messages and folders in sync between multiple clients, so this is an annoying bug.
I have been using K-9 as a work around, but I'd rather not use two different mail programs, and don't like the look/feel of K9 as much either.DCZim,
Are you using IMAP or POP? Also, are you using a popular public IMAP service like GMail, MSN, etc. that can be "auto configured" without having to manually enter the server name?
Per Google the IMAP bug (which has been fixed some time ago in the Android Mail app but not yet in Motorola's Blur mail app) is triggered by visiting the incoming server settings for the account.
IMAP's entire purpose it to keep everything in sync between multiple devices/clients. If you want to delete messages on your phone without deleting them from the server, you should use POP3 instead of IMAP and ensure you have the client configured to NOT remove messages from the server when deleted locally and to always "leave a copy of message on the server". This is a general concept of POP3, nothing specific to the Bionic, Blur, or Android. -
Apple mail not uploading messages from server
i've got a weird problem - about a week ago, my apple mail program stopped uploading messages to one of my emails accounts. i've been getting messages to that account, and when i right click on the account, apple mail shows me that i have like 100 + unread messages on my pop server, but for some reason, it isn't uploading the messages so that i can access them.
i've spent nearly 2 hours troubleshooting. i even deleted the whole account and made it again, and it did the same thing. this makes me think there is something with my email host or something.
any ideas?When you say “uploading” you actually mean “downloading”, right?
Sometimes messages left on the server clog up the account there, or Mail chokes on a message it cannot download and that prevents it from downloading the rest as well. Solving this problem will probably require deleting one or more messages from the server. What are your Preferences > Accounts > Advanced > Remove copy from server settings for this account?
You may tell Mail to remove from the server all the messages that have already been downloaded doing Preferences > Accounts > Advanced > Remove now. Alternatively, you may use the Account Info window to remove specific messages from the server. And if the account allows web access, you may also remove messages from the server that way.
Try first removing from the server messages that have already been downloaded. If that doesn’t work, you’ll probably have to delete the first message not downloaded yet. You may want to try to download those messages with another mail client such as Thunderbird first, to avoid losing them -- and use Eudora Mailbox Cleaner to import them back into Mail afterwards if you wish. -

Now, Mail wants to download all 1500 messages from my POP server. I noticed this only by accident in the Activity Viewer.
How can I slap Mail and tell it to only download previously un-downloaded messages?

What does "it's not working" mean? It seems to me that it's working pretty well. You deleted it, and now Mail downloads everything still on the server again, which is exactly what deleting that file accomplishes...

Because Mail 2.0 uses a different file than what Mail 1.x used. It was called MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded (without the 2) in Mail 1.x.

Alternatively, you can choose Get Info (⌘I) from the Action menu located below the list of mailboxes in the main Mail window to open the Account Info window -- type "Account Info" in the search field of Mail Help for more information on this feature. This allows you to selectively remove any messages from the server without having to download them. -

Hi, I am trying to locate "delete messages from server" option in Mail Settings on iPhone 5 and can't find it. In iPhone 4 it was just in the Advanced settings but it is not there in iPhone 5. Help please? Thanks
Not sure who your email provider is. Mine is hotmail. When you set up email with hotmail on an iPhone 4 the delete from server never is available. I just got an iPhone 5, i reset up my hot mail account and can't find that setting either. I set it up by using the hotmail button not "other" so meaning delete your hotmail account from your phone. Then re set it up. But when you do add email account, don't use the button that says hotmail. Use the bottom choice that says "other". I have no idea why this is different but if you do this it will set up hotmail just the same. But now that setting is there. The "delete from server" and you set it to "never". Now when you delete the emails from your hot mail account on the iPhone, it leaves that email on the hotmail server. So when you look at email on the computer it's there still. It's good this way if you share email with someone.

My Mail app crashes with error (see below) when trying to access an IMAP account. I installed Adobe Creative Suite 2, that caused Mail and Safari to both fail. I uninstalled CS2 but that didn't help.
I tried a different user account, and both Safari and Mail worked fine.
I deleted com.apple.mail.plist and com.apple.Safari.plist but that didn't help.
I re-started Mail with no accounts, successfully added the .Mac account and a POP account. Then as soon as I added an IMAP account it started failing the same way: it opens okay then fails as soon as the IMAP account checks mail. Using Mail when logged in under a different user id doesn't have this problem, so it doesn't appear to be a bad email message.
I've searched through this forum (thanks!) and believe I've collected the right data, but am unsure what to do next ... i.e. exactly where is the problem!

No, no 3rd party or Internet Helpers, BUT I did load Adobe Creative Suite 2 (Photoshop, Illustrator, and other apps to make me smarter, faster, and more handsome. It had some automatic updater functions, and given that Mail and Safari suffered catastrophic failures I believe they put some hooks in there).
I've since unloaded the Suite -- I should know better than to load an entire suite. Also, I now have 23GB of space on my harddrive, and wonder if I ran out of room during the install. There was no error, but CS2 comes on 4 DVDs so I wonder ...

I deleted the cache files - lots of stuff. I deleted two of the other files (didn't have downloads.plist).
Unfortunately, Mail still dies when it checks for mail in the IMAP account.
