Mail 6: Gmail imap syncing erraticly

My IMAP Gmail account in Mail 6.6 (Mountain Lion) sometimes takes up to an hour to retrieve messages from Gmail. Otherwise it seems fine, but this is a pain and I haven't found this precise problem anywhere else in the many Gmail IMPA/Mac Mail problems. Any hints?

I have the same issue. The mail doesn't show up for several hours sometimes but the date and time on the email is correct. I have had people tell me it's gmail but thats not true because it doesn't experience this issue in other clients using IMAP. I love apple mail but because of this I had to stop using it. They are many other cases of this issue found online.

Mail program gmail IMAP help

I input my gmail IMAP account info into old 10.5.4 macbook instead of creating a new account. Go through all the panels in Mail > Preferences > Accounts > select GMail account, and carefully review all three panels, particularly "Mailbox Behaviors." Sounds to me like you might have some items unchecked that you want checked, and vice-versa, such as "Store draft messages on server," and "Move deleted messages to to the Trash Mailbox," and "Store deleted messages on the server." IF you do not want to keep local copies of what is on the Gmail IMAP server on your computer, select "Don't keep any copies" from the offline viewing pulldown menu on the Advanced tab.
If you are not staying synced with the IMAP server, I wonder whether you have inadvertently made this a POP account (GMail has both)? Verify the "Account type" on the Account Information tab. That is the only way I could envision an IMAP account not staying synchronized with the IMAP server, well, short of misconfiguration of the account's preferences on the other two panels.
A server (in the context of mail) is a mail server which for this account is the Gmail server. Mail.app is a mail client application. You are the mail client. You do not have a mail server on your computer.

Apple Mail and Gmail IMAP

With the iPhone coming to Verizon soon, I'd like to move back to Apple Mail from Gmail, but still want to keep Gmail as my source because my domain is setup with Google Apps but mostly because of the unparalleled spam filtering Gmail has. My problem is that even though I've configured Apple Mail exactly as Google recommends (shown below), I still have some issues.
From the Mail menu, click Preferences > *Accounts > Mailbox Behaviors*
Drafts:
Store draft messages on the server > *do NOT check*
Sent:
Store sent messages on the server > *do NOT check*
Junk:
Store junk messages on the server > checked
Delete junk messages when > Never
Trash:
Move deleted messages to the Trash mailbox > *do NOT check*
Store deleted messages on the server > *do NOT check*
I want to have true IMAP functionality here, but I'm not getting it. Sent messages work fine...if I send a message, it shows up in Apple Mail in the Sent folder and when I go to Gmail it is also in the Sent folder. BUT...when I delete a message in Apple Mail it goes to the Gmail *All Mail* folder (in Apple Mail and Gmail) and never shows up in the Gmail Trash on either Apple Mail or Gmail...where it should. I've tried changing the settings under *Apple Mail > Trash* but that doesn't fix the problem.
I realize some of you might be inclined to say "It's Google problem...ask there" but I'm hoping a Gmail user here might have had this same issue before. Even as a dedicated Apple person for many years, I still can't give up Gmail and their spam filtering that Apple Mail can't come close to. Thanks for any suggestions.

Thanks, Andy. I should have posted a closure statement on this thread as I finally figured everything out. The most frustrating thing is Google's own advice at http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=78892# couldn't further from correct. After many hours of experimenting with settings, I finally came up with the correct ones. In fact, I'm in the process of writing an article about it since there is simply no definitive guidance on the web that I've been able to find in the time I've searched.
Your comments are on target...everything on the *Behaviors Tab* needs to be checked (excepts Notes) and the *Delete when* settings must be set to Never. But there are a few other things that must be done, including some changes on Gmail Settings before Mail and Gmail will be perfectly synchronous. I'll post the entire solution on this forum when I finish the graphics.

Mail with Gmail IMAP: All mail getting marked as read

So other than being painfully slow, and just plain irritating, I have one huge problem with Mail (Tiger) and Gmail IMAP. All incoming mail is marked as read. The mail downloads, gets sorted into folders by the various rules, but the folders never show up with a number showing new messages. I have missed so many emails lately, I think I will have to go back to POP...or add a line to every single rule saying "mark as unread".
Is there a simple solution to this problem I am overlooking?

Yeah, the stupid part is that all SPAM comes marked as unread. So I get to see that I have spam, just not legitimate mail. Ugh.

Apple Mail, iPad & iPhone mail with GMail imap

Hi,
I'm using a MacBook Pro 13", a iPad 4 (actual retina) and an iPhone 4.
I have issues using apple mail with my Gmail imap account :
Only the inbox seem to be fully compatible with every device I use, but the outbox, for example, seem not to be the same box on all device.
when I send a mail from my MacBook, the sended mail doesn't appear in the Mail's classical outbox but in a sub-box of Gmail box on the bottom, and I can't find any trace of the mail on iPhone/iPad.
Is there anything I can do to make that I have the same Inbox, Outbox, Draft, Spam and Trash boxes in all my device and server.
I tryied with iCloud mail account and this works perfectly !!
If it's not possible, is it possible to set my icloud mail account to be with my own domain name as it is on my Gmail acount ?

On iOS, there is no local configuration for the Sent Mail. for Gmail, it automatically goes to the Sent Mail folder. But Sent Mail only shows up when you tap Gmail under the Account setings, not in Inboxes. For OSX, however, you may be able to configure a designated folder (that can be either on the local machine or on the account server). Mail App and IMAP sync issues

I am facing IMAP sync issues with Mail App ver 4.4. I have specified the automatic fetch interval as 1 minute. The problem is the App does not seem to send requests to the server to sync the Inbox folder alone, but it send requests to get STATUS and sync the other folders.
Has anyone else faced similar issues.

Not many of us would set the interval to be only 1 minute -- too often for the speed of many connections. Have you tried 5 minutes to see if the behavior continues?

Mail and Gmail IMAP: duplicates in sent folder

Hi there,
I recently set up my Gmail account for IMAP and configured Mail.app accordingly. I have several mail accounts which all get directed over my Gmail account. It all works fine, but whenever I send a mail from Mail.app from one of my mail accounts, it appears twice in my sent folder in Mail.app (it's not sent twice, I checked that, and it appears normally in the sent folder of the web interface).
It's seriously clucttering my sent folder, does anybody have an idea how to fix this? Maybe a problem with labels?

Cannot get apple mail and gmail to sync properly

I use apple mail for my gmail account. the messages dont seem to sync properly - eg i try to empty the trash and they pop back in there. i changed the settings to what google say to use but now it is downloading 13000 messages. I loged onto my online account to try and delete them from there but i cant find them
What can i do?

Not exactly sure why you cannot find them on the gmail server when logged directly into gmail unless it is due to the fact you set up the gmail preferences to make gmail act as a mail server which I think you have to do to use a mail client.
At any rate, check Mail.app's preferences, accounts, click the account in question, then the Advanced tab. If you check the checkbox "Remove copy from server after retrieving a message" then the mail won't be saved on gmail's pop server.

Mail.app - Gmail - IMAP - alias send from

I recently upgraded my OS and switched from POP to IMAP. Now I am no longer able to send an email through Mail.app for a imap gmail account FROM an alias.

I used to be able to do this with POP on a previous OS, now I don't know if it is the OS or mail protocol change that is preventing this, but all my emails show up as me@gmail even when I select a custom 'from' in mail.app

As jeremyScout replied, I don't think it's a matter of settings on gmail. I already send emails using an alias on gmail but on my ipad 4th gen I can't send them using the alias and I didn't found a solution yet.

Mail.app + Gmail IMAP, stop auto mark as read

I just switched over to IMAP on my Gmail account and I got everything working fine, except one thing:
I've applied rules in Mail.app so they sort into their corresponding folders on the server (or Labels, in Gmail terms). For some reason because of this, certain messages are automatically marked as read.
This doesn't happen to messages that aren't sorted (ie, they stay in the Inbox > Gmail). The strange thing is, this only happens to certain messages that are sorted.
Anybody have any idea?

Mail and Gmail IMAP

Hello, having weird and annoying issues with Mail application.
Sometimes my ports just switch by themselves from 587 to 25 for SMTP. Is there a reason for it? Any fixes? Can't provide more details on this, very random.
After working 3 or so days my Gmail account stops working. Asks for passwords but it never accepts it. My office POP account also stops working. Have to restart the mac couple times to get the connections working again.
Are there any recommendations? Thanks in advance.

In the list of available SMTP servers to use as the Outgoing Server, is there more than one entry for the Gmail server? If or when pared down to only one, have you selected "use this server only"?
What model Mac are you using, and how much free, available, disk space do you have on the hard drive, or if partitioned, on the boot partition?

You probably have a Mail plug-in installed that has a bearing on this (GrowlMail in particular). If that’s the case, this is essential information you should have provided upfront, and (properly) uninstalling it the first thing that you should have tried...

Apple Mail & Gmail IMAP: Any tips for success?

Hello all.
Is anyone having a lot of success with using Apple Mail with Gmail IMAP? I've followed all the directions, and things work pretty well for a while ... but inevitably, after a few days, Mail seems to stop working entirely.
I can delete Gmail account on Mail and start over again ... but, if I have to keep doing that, what's the point?
The problems usually begin when I ask Apple Mail to open the Gmail All Mail folder. It starts opening the mail -- and never stops. I have to do a lot of force quitting.
What have other people been experiencing? What tips can people share? I'd like to get everything working properly.

I think GMail's IMAP support is just extremely slow. For now I'm still using POP on my computers and IMAP for phone access only. Hopefully it will speed up soon enough.
But the problems you're experiencing aren't unique to you. I'm not sure there's anything you can do, and I don't know that it's a Mac specific problem?

Unstable mail with gmail

Mail is behaving very unreliably with gmail. I don't know if it's a gmail problem or Apple problem. On the other hand, gmail works perfectly with my iPhone, so one could presume it's mail.app. It also seems to have become worse after 10.5.5, but that could be a coincidence. Here is what happens
Ever so often, mail cannot connect to gmail. It shows the little warning triangle outside the inbox. It seems to happen when coming out of sleep, or changing network (e.g., airport->ethernet). I cannot quit mail either, but has to force quit it. After I then restart it, it will connect well enough to gmail and retrieve my mail.
Any suggestions?

It just happened again. This time I did not have to force quit mail, quit worked. However, after I started up again, it insisted on downloading a couple of thousand old messages again. It appears it did not download the complete messages, because it only took a couple of minutes. Some kind of sync? Still, it's continually unstable.
Anybody have mail and gmail IMAP working smoothly? Any tricks?

Reply/answered flags using Gmail IMAP

Does anyone know if Apple Mail now syncs reply/answered flags when using GMail IMAP? I know it was an issue in the past. Has it been resolved? If not, does anyone know of a workaround?
Also, is anyone aware of any guides to optimizing the use of Apple Mail with GMail IMAP? I know there are some quirks. Just wondering if anyone has worked through them all.

Just to be clear, gmail does not support the \Answered flag on its IMAP implementation, so there's little Apple can really do to fix it. Here's the gmail page explaining what features are missing:

I'm not aware of any guides, but my #1 suggestion: use the Google Labs feature which allows you to turn of individual mailboxes on IMAP, and turn off the All Mail box (and possibly Starred, etc.) Having these in Mail will cause some serious confusion, as searches will return two copies of emails, changes in one box will affect another, and so on. Note that the All Mail box will still be available through the web interface, which is nice.
