Mail 7.2 unresponsive after upgrade to OS 10.9.2

Two days ago I upgraded Mavericks to OS 10.9.2: since then Mail's behaviour has been increasingly erratic and the app is now unusable. Nothing in the viewer window responds to clicks, so I am unable to select accounts or open individual emails. The menu is responsive but panes such as Contacts and Previous Recipients display a bizarre collage of screen artefacts, as does the sidebar of the Accounts pane in Preferences. When I screenshot these, the panes are just empty (see attached image).
When I am able to click on an email, it appears in a window with a different email's title and no content.
Does anyone have any suggestions? (Fortunately I'm getting a new MacBook Pro in a couple of weeks — I suspect that this mid-2009 one is too old for Maverisks.)

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
    b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and
after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears.
Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Reinstall the 10.9.2 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo).
4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Reinstall the 10.9.2 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo).

  • Mail not working properly after upgrade to  Leopard

Hopefully this will be a common issue easily solved!
After updating from 10.3.9 to Leopard 10.5.6 Mail has become unresponsive after opening - the programme opens but the message window does not appear, the address viewer and connection activity monitor will appear, it does not receive mail either
If anyone has any ideas would be much appreciated!
    TIA

The problem you are having following the upgrade to Leopard (10.5.6) from 10.3.9 is similar to those of people who have upgraded from Tiger, and has been covered by the support document at the link below:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2537
Your issue will be due to files named to include MessageSorting (which would mean you once have upgraded from a version of OSX earlier than 10.4), remove those, also, but never restore those. You will not have the files named to include MessageRules because you have not used Tiger.
To find the correct location for the Mail folder, open a Finder window, click on the icon of a house in the Sidebar (this is known often as "Home"), click on Library in that Home user directory, and then to open the Mail folder found there.

  • Mail won't work after upgrade to 3.0

I cannot get my Mail program to work after upgrading to 3.0. It starts, searched for new mail, then quits. I cannot get or send new mail. The program does not operate. Suggestions, please?

I get the exact same thing. The status just keeps showing "Connecting..." and it never seems to connect. Oddly enough, I just updated to the new OS on my iMac at home and immediately after, I couldn't connect to mail from the computer. I had to manually download a component of the update and once I did that, mail worked just fine. Probably just an odd coincidence having nothing to do with the mail issues on the iPhone but I thought I'd mention it.

  • My mail messages are blank after upgrading to OS X Mavericks. How do I fix this??

My mail messages are blank after upgrading to OS X Mavericks. How do I fix this??

Hi, I had this same problem. I have a load of work subfolders and was showing the message header but no content. I think it lost the link to the original messages.
There may be a simpler way but I fixed it by going to the mail folders in finder. I took the following steps:
Go to user library (hold down the alt key whilst clicking the Go menu in finder to access user library)
Go to user/Library/Mail/V2/Mailboxes. You should be able to see your mailboxes and your original messages (ending .emlx) after clicking down the hierachy in each mailbox. For some reason mail added a "-2" onto the end of each mailbox which I think has caused the problem.
Copy each required mailbox (.mbox) onto desktop. I removed the "-2" at this stage to clean things up.
    In Mail, choose File/Import Mailboxes....
Import data from: Apple Mail. Click continue, navigate to desktop and choose the relevant .mbox folders. Click Choose.
It should then import the mail to a new folder called import in mail. You can then rename that folder or move the subfolders out.
I moved the .mbox folders on my desktop to my documents folder as a backup just in case. I then deleted the problem mailboxes from the finders mailboxes folder.
Problem solved - for me anyway!!
    Hope this helps.

  • Animated gif in mail are not visible after upgrade to mavericks

    Hi,
I use a animated gif in my signature in mail. This gif was playing normally (like a animated gif) in mountain lion when I writes a new message. After upgrading to mavericks I can't see the animated gif playing. I just see the first frame. However when I send a mail to my iPad using iOS 7 the animated gif is playing normally.
    Thanx for every answer!

I'm having this issue as well — I can no longer send animated gifs in Mail with Mavericks (10.9.0). The image retains its full image size and remains a gif format, but does not play, just sits static. This also affects forwarding animated gifs — which play fine in the mail window — they are static in the compose window and are sent static.

Help after upgrade my public folders dissapeared when using the same configuration used in previous ML server Mail would not work
    Help Please.

Did you enable the ACL plugin (per instructions above) ?
    create an ACL file
    /Library/Server/Mail/Data/mail/public/dovecot-acl
with the contents something like this:
    user=jeff lrwstipekxa
    authenticated lri
This would give user jeff full access
authenticated users could drop files, but not read
    Thats just an example.
    Read-up on it here

Make sure you give each subfolder an ACL.
Once setup, new folders created via imap will inherit the ACL from parent.

After upgrading a Tiger server to Leopard, all messages in user mailboxes are marked as unread. This is just a test upgrade right now. But once we upgrade the live server, this will cause confusion to our users. Suggestions?

I'm pretty sure this is always going to happen due to the cyrus database needing a rebuild after being imported.

On my iPhone 6 128GB with 8.3 also Mails has started to reject. Everything works OK if I check emails in Safari.

will be applicable only if we get these events in the app log 1019,1018,1036,4999
You can check the transport service is running in which service account - Local or network
It should be running in network account by default.
You can run get-transportagent and check if there are any transport agents installed
If you find them then disable all the transport agents that you have installed on the Exchange servers by running disable-transportagents
Disable the antivirus if you have any installed.

  • App Launching Unresponsive After Upgrading to Snow Leopard

For reasons I do not quite understand, launching any app, and doing many things within them (basically, instantiating any process) is extremely slow after upgrading to Snow Leopard. For instance, opening a new window in Terminal takes a full 22 seconds (I've timed it) to go from "login" to the zsh prompt. Before, it was instantaneous. There is nearly nothing installed on this computer other than the bare essentials and some documents.
This is obviously very frustrating and detrimental to my productivity. Here is what I've tried:
    - Reinstalling from scratch (I've now tried this two times). First, I backed up my home directory with SuperDuper and manually copied everything over. Everything was fixed, for about two days, and then it started doing the same thing again. Then, I cloned the entire disk with SuperDuper and restored from it. Again, everything was fixed for a little while and then I had the same problem again.
    - Most recently, I tried "Verify disk" in Disk Utility. This returned that there were errors (an "invalid directory count"). Therefore I rebooted into the installation disc and ran "Repair Disk", which outputted that the disk was repaired successfully. However, I rebooted back and now have the same problem.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what is going wrong? My first thought was that perhaps the hard drive is failing, but I've dual-booted Linux on another partition and it works fine.
I am very confused. How can I fix this?

    Have you updated iTunes?

  • Mail app stopped working after upgrade to Mavericks

    Dear All,
I have updated from Mountain Lion (Macbook Pro 3,1, 256SSD) to Mavericks, and mail app stopped working.
That means - when I click the icon - the app does not work.
I can see that it downloads mail - as when I click it I receive notifcation that it has downloaded some mail, however I cannot open window. Sometimes I manage to open it, but it is totally unresponsive - I cannot change or click anything in it.
I have tried repairing disk permissions but without any success.
Moreover if I run mail app and try to click "new message" from the top bar, the window that appears is somewhat mixed with my wallpaper backround (I can see fragments of it).
Please help me, as I had there a few gigs of precious mails that I don't want to lose...
    Thank you in advance!
    Olek

    Do a backup.
Take notes of all account information or take screen shots. You may need to set the accounts up again. Quit Mail.
    Copy the line below.
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
Select Go/Go To Folder from the Finder menu bar. Paste the line into the window. You won’t see it.
Move the folder com.apple.mail to your desktop. You must move the entire folder, not just the contents.
Relaunch Mail and test. If the problem is solved, recreate any required Mail settings and import any emails you want to save from the folder on the desktop. If the problem remains, return the folder to where you got it replacing the one that is there.
    Information learned from Linc Davis.
If you prefer to make your user library permanently visible, use the Terminal command found below.
Show User Library Directory in Mac OS X 10.7 Lion & 10.8 Mountain Lion
You might want to bookmark the command. I had to use it again after every update. I have also been informed that if you drag the user library to Finder it will remain visible.

  • Mail App Not Opening After Upgrading to Yosemite

I upgraded to Yosemite this morning from Mountain Lion. Everything seemed to go well until I clicked Mail for the first time. The migration process started, but the app never opened and will not open. I immediately get a crash dialog and that's it. I click reopen and get the dialog box saying, "The last time you opened Mail, it unexpectedly quite while reopening windows." I can do this over and over again. I've read the other threads, but they are not helping me.

Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • FCPx will not open, Leaves spinning beach ball of death over the application which is unresponsive after upgrade to 10.8.2.

I recently decieded to upgrade my computer from Lion to Mountain Lion, right after the upgrade this problem started with my FCPx 10.0 so i decided maybe the software was unsupported so I chose to download the trial of 10.0.6 FCPx. This aswell became unresponsive. I have already tried deleting all of my FCP projects, which did not change the problem at all. It would be nice if I could get a fast response on this because I have a deadline for an edit of one week.

    ~/Library/Save Application State/com.apple.FinalCut.savedState
Step 2: USe Finder or terminal.app rename these two folders that appear on ANY file systems you have where they exist where you may have asked FCPX to put its goodies, rename to something else:
Final Cut Events and Final Cut Projects to zzz.Final Cut Events and zzz.Final Cut Projects
This should cause FCPX NOT to try and reinstate the FCPX UI like it was launched last time and secondly NOT to try and LOAD any events or reinstate an PROJECTS and build proxy thumbnails because it wont find any. If you'r enew to FCPX these two directiries will be likely in your ~/Movies directory...
Step 3: Launch FCPX and see if yourresults differ.
Step 4 (optional) IF not then as others may suggest to delete the 3-4 com.apple.FinalCutxxxx.plist files in the ~/Library/Preferences (your home domain library)
Post your results for other to see.
