Mail account for: shortname is not enabled

After migrating over from 10.5, my Open Directory users are unable to access email. All other services are working. The recurring pattern is "mail account for: <shortname> is not enabled". Any ideas, even crazy ones?

I've already had to update the dovecot.conf once <http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3792>, but I can't tell if this is on the Dovecot side or the OD side.

Many thanks to Apple Enterprise Tech Support.
The access control list for mail was not set to all users and groups.
To fix:
(1) In Server Admin, select the server.
(2) Select the 'Access' panel.
(3) Select the 'Mail' service'
(4) Set the radio button to 'Allow all users and groups'.
Previously I'd had mail restricted to 'only users and groups below'.

  • Why can't I use my normal mail account for synching notes

    Hi there,
I maintain my father's iDevices/computers as he has Parkinsons and does not understand the technology behind how these services work. I need to maintain as simple a configuration as possible. As an example calendaring is difficult as new entries are not necessarily put in the calendar he uses and I have to talk him through how to show all calendars on a regular basis. I can't have his mail on IMAP as he cannot manage his mail and his mailbox fills up. I can't simply pay for storage ad infinitum - my local copy of his mail is about 6 GB and growing.
I have seen several discussions where it is clear that we *must* use an icloud.com e-mail account for synching notes via IMAP, but none of them have explained WHY I MUST USE @icloud.com e-mail. If this is an IMAP based service why can't I use any other IMAP server
I see that it is referred to as an "icloud account" but if I have to enable mail, it becomes an e-mail account, which I do not want as it will be confusing if there is an issue with the main mail server (which I maintain) it will present an option to use the icloud.com e-mail as a valid option to send the mail.
I do not turn on the mail option in icloud.. (only calendar, contacts, reminders and find my iphone). I find it dissapointing that this is now what seems to be a "requirement".

That is absolutely unnecessary, but more convenient to have icloud to sync your notes. I use other IMAPs as well and can sync my notes with google and yahoo and icloud(corresponding email is required in all cases). It is your choice and you can pick your poison, but you will find out that icloud is more convenient after you or him will lose his info few times. There is no requirement, you can even use the group that will not sync with anything "on my device" if you disable all of IMAPS. Icloud is just the one that you can call Apple and normally people prefer to work with Apple support way more then with google's or yahoo's, but that is again up to your preference.

  • How do I set up a mail account for an older macbook?

I'm trying to set up a mail account for my dad on a used (but refurbished) macbook. It's running 0SX10.6.8. I'm not sure how to configure the incoming and outgoing mail servers. I didn't have to do this for my macbook air and my brother did not have to do it for his pro. I don't know if im supposed to use POP or IMAP. A window will pop up asking  for the account type, incoming mail server, user name, and password. I don't know what to do from here.

    Hello,
Your Internet/email service provider should be able to tell you exactly what to enter. You may also want to take a look at the following web page:

  • Specify e-mail account for outgoing Calendar invites?

I created a Calendar event on my iPhone, invited a friend, and see that the invite went out on my Exchange e-mail account. I would prefer to use a different e-mail account for outgoing invites. Where do I do that?
    Thanks

I've never used my Gmail calendar, and syncing was not turned on. I've just done that, and selected my Gmail address as the "Settings - mail - default account" address. Hopefully that will do the trick!
    Thanks, --Chris

  • When opening my Outlook 2010 with new added e-mail account with Exchange Server, I have to click manually on my standard e-mail account for checking mail

When opening my Outlook 2010 with new added e-mail account with Exchange Server supplied by my employer, I have to click manually on my standard e-mail account for checking mail. Do I have to upgrade my Microsoft Office 2010 or how can I make my Outlook
2010 check all my four e-mail accounts without manually click on my accounts?

    Hello Ketil,
    Good Day...
Seems to be the Issue is Syncing emails, now I would recommend you to Remove and Add the Account and try and check if the emails are getting synced automatically.
Hope this is with Single User. If it is with Multiple Users then we need to check the permissions assigned.
    Regards,

  • Iphone5 - lost my contacts when moving from BT Yahoo to BT Mail. I do not back up to iCloud and I did not use my mail account for contacts.  Can anyone help to find and restore my contacts?

IPhone5. I have lost my contacts when moving from BT Yahoo to BT Mail. I do not backup to iCloud and do not use my mail account to store contacts.  Can anyone help find the contacts on my phone and restore them?

Contacts are designed to be synced to a supported application on the computer or a cloud service like Gmail, iCloud, or an Exchange server.
Have you failed to use the device as designed?

  • I gave my old iPhone to my partner. We reset it and set up new e-mail accounts for her.   But in Settings the iCloud account is still in my name . How do we change this?

I gave my partner my old 3GS.  Everything worked well for a couple of years.  Then a week ago she was not able to use her gmail and yahoo e-mail accounts. With the yahoo account she is being asked to give my ID and password.  We have deleted and restored the accounts.
WHen I look at settings, it appears in ICloud that the phone is still registered in my name?  How do we change this?  In doing so will she lose all her information from the past two years?
We backed up the phone to a pc two days ago.
MY worry is that the backup has the incorrect information so we may get into a cycle of restoring it and not fixing the problem.

have you logged out with the old appleID in settings->itunes & app stores ?

  • Merge Mail Account for duplicate account Mailman

    Hi,
The situation I have is that a user listed only once in Workgroup Manager is listed twice in Mailman. I'm not really sure how this happened, but one account is linked to a newly created mail account. However most of the mail is in the other mail account. Is it possible to merge the disconnected mailbox into the active one? If not can I create a new user account and link the disconnected mailbox to the new user? How would I set the necessary permissions? From here I could use Mail (client) to get at the emails.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Mark

  • I would like to open multiple e-mail accounts for students, with limited in-school use. Are there anyways I can do this?

I am a teacher in an outdated computer lab (my own problem). We use Windows 2000 and I'm thinking of FireFox 3.6. We are routed to the internet through a single server. I would like to be able to open multiple e-mail accounts through GMail or another free service, but I have been told that I will experience problems due to security protections. Does the multiFox extension allow me to do this?

Unless you plan to have multiple email accounts open in different tabs at the same time, there is no need for Multifox. If each user has their own [[profiles|profile]], then the Multifox extension will not be required. If you want to open multiple email accounts at the same time in one instance of Firefox then you will need Multifox.

  • Automate New Mail Account for Exchange

I'm trying to create a applescript that will ask the user for the their password and then create their mail account.  I can get the username, name, and email address from their active directory record so no need to ask the user that.  The problem I'm running into, is that scripting for exchange seems almost not doable.  In the script that comes in /Library/Scripts they only work with .Mac, POP, and IMAP types, but no exchange.
The funny part is that when a new user goes into mail the first time, just by giving the username, email address, and password it can autodiscover everything it needs and set up the account.  So is there a way for applescript to tell mail these pieces of information and then tell it to autodiscover the account?
Is there a way to do this using a bash script?

  • Suddenly, my password is popping up automatically when I sign onto my e-mail account, and I do NOT want this!

For years, I would be required, when signing onto my Yahoo e-mail account, to type in my password every time. Now, it pops up automatically...and I CANNOT have this. I tried disenabling cookies, etc., but the problem persists. Help, please!

    Find the stored passwords<br/>
    Preferences > Security > Saved passwords<br/>
and delete it. If it asks next time whether to save it, say no.
If that doesn't work (not sure how yahoo does it) <br/>
    Preferences > Privacy > Remove individual cookies<br/>
enter 'yahoo' at the top and delete any cookies containing it. (Or delete all cookies.)
