Mail account would not send email.  Now it won't send or receive.  I use yahoo plus.  Troubleshoot, virus, etc.? How do I start over if necessary?

A few days ago, got the message that I could not connect to the outgoing server.  Tried a few things suggested here.  Nothing worked.  Now, I can't send or receive mail.  Any help would be most appreciated.  I am not a tech type at all.  Thanks in advance!

Hi Ozzie, Yahoo has frequent outages, & also had 20 million usenames hacked in the last few days.

Can you login using a Web Browser?
In Mail's Window Menu, choose Connection Doctor, any red dots for status, if so what is the exact message?
Then click the Show Details button & Check again.
The Password rejection can confuse people since it's a catch all meaning...
This Password, Username, Authentication method... is not recognized on this Port to this Server, or a server end problem.
If using a browser to login via WebMail works it's not Name or Password, but one of the other ones.
The receiving email ports are:
IMAP is port 143
IMAP-SSL is port 993
POP is port 110
POP-SSL is port 995
Outgoing ports are...
SMTP and SMTP-SSL is on ports 25, 587 and 465. Port 587 has to be SSL, and port 465 is enforced TLS-wrapped and is generally used by Outlook users.

    Hello Sue,
I have an iPad 3, iPad Mini and iPhone 5S and they are all sluggish on capitalisation using shift keys. I hope that Apple will solve the problem because it is driving me crazy.
I find using a Microsoft Surface and Windows 8 phone, which I also have, work as well as all the ios devices before the ios 7 upgrade.
It has something to do with the length of time that you need to hold the shift key down. The shift key needs to be held longer than the letter key for the capitalisation to work. For some reason, this is a major change in the way we have learnt to touch type on computers. I am having to relearn how to type!

  • I have an iPhone 5 and suddenly 1 of my Gmail accounts is not sending or receiving mail

I'm getting an error msg for 1 of my gmail accts. "cannot get mail", "server imap.gmail.com"  not responding. I've deleted and reinstalled the accounts, triple checked all info in settings. All software is up to date.

    Morning tpj9393nSoCal,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
For troubleshooting on this, take a look at this article:
iOS: Gmail account will not connect to Gmail server
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3058
    Resolution
Check that your device is connected to the Internet by opening Safari and loading a webpage, such asgoogle.com. If you cannot connect to the Internet, try the steps in this article.
If you have other email accounts on the device, check if those accounts can send and receive email.
If the issue is isolated only to the affected Gmail account, visit this website: https://www.google.com/accounts/DisplayUnlockCaptcha.
Complete the form to unlock the account.
Once the account has been unlocked, check that the issue is resolved on the iPhone or iPod touch. If not, remove the affected Gmail account from the device and add it to the device again: Settings > Mail, Contacts and Calendars > Add Account > Gmail.
    Hope this helps,
    Mario

  • My .mac mail account is not sending emails.

I've already done all steps several times a day for the past month and I've erased all my mail from all folders and accounts. This wasn't a problem before, what gives? Is it a virus? or 10.6.8 OS update bug? or what?
From my iPhone says that I've exceeded the limit for sending emails??!
Is this the first Mac virus/bug? How and when can they resolve this problem that people have?

I expect you fixed this long ago. I had a possibly similar problem today where mail wouldn't send anything under my mac.com / me.com account. I am using mail in 10.6.8.
I tried some other fixes suggested elsewhere but none work. However forcing a rebuild of mail's plist file seemed to fix the problem. I did this by renaming ~/library/preferences/com.apple.mail.plist and the folder ~/library/preferences/byhost so that the OS would no longer recognise them.
Restarting mail caused the recreation of new versions of these files and the redownloading of all my emails from Apple's servers. It has fixed the stmp problem. not sure if any other problems caused: it seems like quite an aggresive way to fix it but it worked.

  • Email not opening This is a sudden thing, Email had been working fine for two months then today would not stay open now it will not open at all. after trying to open mail I receive a white screen for a nano second and the app closes

Email not opening on my iPad2 This is a sudden thing, email had been working fine since purchasing the device then today would not stay open,  now it will not open at all. After trying to open mail I receive a white screen for a nano second and the app closes.

Have you tried closing the Mail app completely ? From the home screen (i.e. not with Mail 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Mail app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
If that doesn't work then you could try a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • One Yahoo! mail account does not receive email sent from .mac

OK, this is an odd problem, and any help would be appreciated.
My girlfriend's Yahoo! mail account does not receive email sent from my .mac address. If I send email from my Gmail or Yahoo! accounts she receives the message. No one else has informed me that they haven't received email from the .mac address. Additionally, the .mac account is in her address book.
Anyway, has anyone seen a similar pattern with Yahoo! or any other email provider?
    Thanks.
    - Jennings

Thanks for the reply . . . and yes, the recipient's email provider likely holds the answer.
However, I was hoping someone here might have had a similar experience and could answer as the email provider is Yahoo, and they are slow in responding to help requests . . . for a period I hosted a personal, paid website through Yahoo Domains and help tickets lingered for several days on multiple occasions (this being the reason the site is no longer hosted by Yahoo). I also doubt Yahoo will expend too much energy resolving a problem for a free email account.
Anyway, I posted in the Yahoo mail forums, and hopefully something will come-up . . . .

Re: Macbook Pro 10.6.8 RAM Upgarde to 8 GB
The amount of RAM is not dependant on the operating system. It is all about the model of you Mac.
10.6.8 is the version of OS X that is installed on your system. It has no real baring on the amount of RAM that CAN be installed.
Personally I have never had good luck with Corsair RAM. I have always had good luck with Crucial and Kingston.

The progress bar reports (for example) that 5 messages are being sent  when I only sent one, etc. etc.
1 goes to the intended recipient
    2 goes to the NSA
