Mail acting strange around signatures

Hi Folks
Not sure when this started, but recently.
In 10.6.8 OS X Mail, tying near a signature has become unpredictable.  I typem hit return (as expected), new paragraph (as expected) then return and my cursor ends up below the signature.
OR - I try to paste things in and it will put it below the sig, not where the cursor is.
I'm not a noob, I'm not on crack - This isn't user error, it can be replicated in any number of messages and on both my tower (with 33 sigs) and MBP (which has 3).
Any one else have this problem?  Any fix?

Hi
This is the specific forum for OS X Server. You may have more luck posting in the Lion specific Forum here:
https://discussions.apple.com/community/mac_os/mac_os_x_v10.7_lion
However I'll try and answer your questions:
"Any one else have this problem?"
I have seen something very similar.
"Any fix?"
What I did was firstly copying my existing signature. I then deleted it. Quit Mail. Launched it and pasted the copied signature back again. The problem went away. I only have one signature and for me not such a big problem or difficult a fix. For you and with that amount of signatures you may find you can't be arsed?
HTH?

  • Mail acting strange in OS X Yosemite?

Since installing OS X Yosemite (Version 10.10) Mail (Version 8.0 (1990.1) has been acting strangely. It freezes and I have to force quit. Mail will prevent a shut down or restart unless I force quit it. I've been into Mail preferences and reset everything - including handling junk. Anyone else getting this? I've sent the report of each incident to Apple.

    pls try this
Select a mailbox, then choose Mailbox > Rebuild.

  • Mail Acting Strange

Upgraded to Leopard the otehr day, and that's the only thing I've changed recently, but it's worked fine since installing and syncing it.
My iPhone has worked beautifully since I got it. Today I was checking my mail (AOL IMAP account) and it downloaded messages fine, I was able to see the sender, and the subject line.
Upgraded to Leopard the otehr day, and that's the only thing I've changed recently, but it's worked fine since installing and syncing it.
When I would open the message to view the contents, it was fragments of some old mail I read last week. Very strange. This happened on multiple emails. Can't figure it out. Server problem maybe?
    Any suggestions welcomed!

Any idea where they're zipping off to? the Dock perhaps?
Does everything else work in Mail?
Not certain, but this can fix myriad Mail problems...
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), it will try to repair your Disk Directory while the spinning radian is happening, so let it go, run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then move these folder & file to the Desktop.
Move this Folder to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail/
Move this file to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/Envelope Index
    Reboot.
If that doesn't do it and you can afford to redo all your Rules, try these & reboot...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/MessageRules.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/MessageRules.plist.backup

  • Mail:  acting strangely

Mail has been doing some funky things this week. It shows outgoing mail being sent but they are actually not being received by the recipients. Also, even though preferences is set to "never" for emptying sent mail the out folder actually self emptied. Now the folder empties itself on every sent email. I checked with the service provider (Verizon) and all settings are ok from that end. Incoming email works fine. Could the Mail program have gotten corrupted somehow?

Could the Mail program have gotten corrupted somehow?
Doubtful. Your preferences could be corrupted, so you should quit Mail, delete the com.apple.mail.plist file from Home/Library/Preferences, then restart Mail and setup all your accounts and their respective preferences again and Mail will find all your existing mailboxes.

  • Mail acting strangely - can't open Notes

Trying to access my Notes in Mail, all created before I installed Lion.
It won't load them, shows the load icon and nothing happens.
If I try and open one, it launches the yellow page, and won't load it. Then I can't close the page, and have to force Mail to quit.
Then when I reopen Mail, I look at notes, and on the one it was trying to load I see the nasty looking message:
    "The message has no content"
Any ideas? I need to recover and/or access these notes without any problems.
I'm not sure if I've successfully accessed the notes since installing Lion...
    Please help.
    Thanks.

Can't find a way to recover these notes.... Please help, as I need to access content.
    Not very good Apple!

    Hi ILM.
I don't have a clear fix for you, but I note that no one has got back to you.
I found this thread (on another site) which discusses the issue you appear to have.  Perhaps there is something in this thread that will assist?

  • Indesign CS6 acting strange at times

I am not loving Indesign CS6. Not because of it's functionality but because it acts strangely. When I quit it, sometimes it takes forever to quit and you start wondering if it is going to, sometimes it says it's closed but the tabbed windows still remain in view only grayed out with the beachball spinning. Eventually it goes away but it is disturbing. anyone know why?
Another thing is that when I change a font size, it will look like it changed but still have the after image of the previous size. Irritating.
One more, and I've had this problem for all of the last versions since I think cs4. When I try to replace a pdf with a current version, (unless I have restarted my computer since the last time I created it,) it tells me that I don't haver permisson or that file may be in use. I end up going to the pdf and trashing it physically. Not very efficient.
I know there are 3 issues but I've only had it for a couple of months at best.
The first issue is the most disturbing.
Mountain Lion 10.8.2, 8 gb memory, processor 3.06 ghz intel

Again, please remove your auto-signature when replying by email.
Let's try a couple of diagnostic experiments, please.
First, create a new user account onthe mac and log in with that and tell us if there is a change in behavior in ID.
Second, try starting in with extensions disabled by holding down the Shift key while booting the Mac. Does that make a difference?
Do you run any sort of utilities -- anti-virus, Mac Keeper, etc.?

  • Mail acting weird since yesterday

Hi all! I'm running OS 10.8.3 on an iMac (Intel). I'm using Mail version 6.3 (1503).
It's been working fine until last night. All of a sudden, it's acting strange.
Here are some things I've noticed:
         1. Often (but not always) when I delete an email, it deletes a second email from my inbox as well — one that's either right above or below the one I meant to delete
         2. When I click on an email to view it (I have my email set up so I can see the list of emails and then the actual email I've selected... see screenshot), it automatically opens the email in a separate window (when I did NOT double click to open it)
         3. When I click on an email to reply to someone, TWO windows of that same email pop up
It's like it's super hyper sensative or something. Any ideas what is causing this to happen? I can live with the second two issues, but the first one is not good. I don't even know what it's deleting.
    Thanks!
    Julie

    Hi Tuttle,
I'm glad you are not experiencing the problem. However, there is NO confusion here - the numbers are random and do NOT represent the incoming or the outgoing numbers of messages as you would normally expect. This morning I got 195 of 195 and got no messages coming in at all! I have been using Macs for more than a decade and this has never happened before. This has only happened for the first time when I changed to Mavericks and is happening on both of my laptops (macbook air and Macbook Pro 15inch) - it is NOT the computer.
"To my eyes, the numbers we see in the Activity pane increase in increments of 1 with each message that is sent or received by a given mail account, starting with "1 of 1" after Mail is launched in any given session"  - of course this is what you would expect to happen.
If the problem doesn't exist for you then your comments, as well intended as they are, are not really going to help - it is a bit like me telling you it is raining outside but you are in a railway tunnel - what rain?  I am grateful for your contribution and interest so please don't take offence. The issue is known to Apple Techs - they tell me that they can see the same thing happening on their computers - and their explanation of why it is happening is somewhat frustrating and definitely not sitting well with me.
I suppose at the end of the day, if I get my emails I should not be too concerned but for those having this experience it is still a bit lame.
    Regards to all....

  • Powerbook acting strangely....help!

    Hello!
My Powerbook g4 17 has been acting strangely the past two days. It all started when I had both Safari and iPhoto open. I got the Beach ball of death and my computer froze (I had been getting the SBBOD on occasion, but never had it caused a full blown freeze before). I tried all the force quit commands and finally I had to manually shut it down. It had trouble restarting, it would chime but then it wouldn't get past the first screen with the grey apple symbol. I turned it off and let it "rest" overnight. The next day it turned on fine, but the computer's "thinking" noises sound different. More of a buzz now than the usual clicking and whirring noises. The power button also makes a strange "BEEEEOOOOooooop" noise when I turn it off, which is also new.
To make a long story short, I tried to run disc utility and it froze on me again when it finished. I had to hard start it (and again, and again, and again...)and it won't go past the first screen UNLESS I let it sit turned off for at least 5 minutes. Once I do manage to get it turned on, it acts fine for maybe a half and hour or so until it slows down (thinking gets labored) and freezes on me again.
Any ideas on what may be going on? I'm worried it's something really bad.....

    Thank you BGreg.
I have 27GB free out of my 80GB drive, so no issue there...
I tried to do the boot up with the OS X install cd witn no luck. I was on the phone with AppleCare last night for over an hour and after trying many different things, it seems I am going to have to mail it in for repairs.
Here I was hoping it'd be something simple.
And of course, I backed up as much as I could. I'm crossing my fingers!

  • My G5 recently began to act strange. I could no longer print ton any printer. all of my Adobe software would crash on startup as did Safari. tried to reload the printer software and was denied as I was no longer recognized as the administrator. any fixes?

my G5 recently began to act strange. I could no longer print to any printer and all of my Adobe software and Safari would crash on startup.  attempted to re-install my printer software, but was denied as the computer no longer recognized me as the administrator even though i am the only account on the computer.  Performed a system install (w/ bakup of previous), this seemed to work for about two days and the problem has returned with other software (Excel) crashing on startup.  does anyone have any suggestions?  do i need to erase the harddrive and start over?

I suggest you backup you important data!
I suspect the harddrive is going bad.
Run disk utility. verify disk & verify permissions.
    Run hardware diagnostics.
I not sure of a good way of telling if the harddrive is going bad.  There is software to test harddrive.  Don't know of free stuff for mac.
Considerng that the hd is 7 plus years old this isn't a surprise.
    Suggest replacing hd.
If your not up to that, get an external hd.
You need an external Firewire drive to boot a PowerPC Mac computer [ a few G5's will boot from USB ].
I recommend you do a google search on any external harddrive you are looking at.
I bought a low cost external drive enclosure. When I started having trouble with it, I did a google search and found a lot of complaints about the drive enclosure. I ended up buying a new drive enclosure. On my second go around, I decided to buy a drive enclosure with a good history of working with Macs. The chip set seems to be the key ingredient. The Oxford line of chips seems to be good. I got the Oxford 911.
    Has everything interface:
    FireWire 800/400 + USB2, + eSATA 'Quad Interface'
    save a little money interface:
    FireWire 400 + USB 2.0
This web page lists both external harddrive types. You may need to scroll to the right to see both.

  • IPhone 3GS Frrezing, Deleting stuff, acting strange

My 3GS has been acting strange the past week or two.  It is doing so many strange things that I'll just bullet and list them....
It freezes for 5-10 seconds, randomly.  Can't swipe to a new screen, press and buttons or anything.  Then returns to normal.
Push an App button and it's like I held in the button to delete or move icons.....
Sometimes pushing an App button doesn't load the App.  Takes a few times to get it to open.
When typing a text or email, it adds periods in randomly.  If I hit the delete button, it will sometimes just delete the text I just wrote.
There's a tiny gap at the top between the clock, battery, etc.... some black space.  Sometimes, the upper "bar" moves to the very top of the screen leaving no black space.  Not sure if I explained that too well.
I replaced the battery a few months ago because it would just shut off when it reached 50-60%.  Others have had the same problem.  Replacement went really smooth and it worked fine for at least a month or so.... so I doubt that's the culprit.
I have turned it off and on a few times.  Synced with iTunes a few times and no luck.  I have not restored yet.  Don't really know what Restore does but I am going to read up on it.
Any other ideas or is anyone having similar issues?  I search and found nothing....
    Thanks!
    Jerrod

My 3Gs is freezing on certain contacts (growing number and I believe they're all ATT customers.
To make matters worse...my daughter is a text addict... And most of the other texters just won't pay attention to my pleas that they calmer e.mail me, until the daughter's Saturday Wedding is over... So I can make an appt. At an Apple retailer to have a "genius" help me with this!!!! Everyone coming in for the rehearsal and Wedding is testing me! And I cannot open their message,  much less reply via this form of messaging!
I'm so unable to mess with this right now-
I called ATT tech support and we tried a couple of possible options to fix this and wound up with something that was  SO convoluted involving my PowerBook ( which was at home where I was NOT!) and a week later, here am, without reliable testing!  Did you get any results in your problem?!?

  • T410 - Brand new laptop acting strange

I got this new laptop yesterday and as soon as I started configuring it and downloading all the Windows updates is started acting strange.  The first issue was that the touchpad would not work - only the red pointing device.  Also, the mouse would slowly move to the upper right of screen all on it's own without touching it.
It also intermitently freezes where I can move the mouse pointer around but it will not recognize my clicks on anything,  When I forcibly close dwm.exe (which stands for "Desktop Windows Manager" then that solves the problem.
The other issue is that when I'm tying the cursor will jump around on it's own.  So if I'm typing in my login info, it will either stop typing and jump out of that box or it will jump to the front and I'll end up typing the last part of the login name in the front of the first part.
Any idea what these buggy things could be?  This is supposed to be brand new from CompUSA.com

so the trackpad doesn't work? Press Fn + F8 does the trackpad shows as enabled or disabled.
Under bios there is also option to enable and disable the trackpad, ensure that it is enabled.

  • Safari is acting strangely on several counts

For the last several days, Safari is acting strangely on several counts. I haven't downloaded any updates or plugins recently, and I am not aware of any Safari viruses on Mac OS X, so I'm totally lost here. Please help!
    1. Periodically, Safari will stop loading a page completely. So it will start and then the url bar will be partially blue and the circle will keep circling but nothing will happen. Once it does this on one tab in that window, it will start doing it on all new tabs opened up in that window, but any original tab there might still go through. If I close the window and reopen another window, all sites on all tabs will go right through. I tried disabling DNS prefetching, and that helps Safari behave for a few minutes, then it goes back to such strange behavior. I tested using my wireless and using a different network, and it happens on both, so it's not my router. Sometimes, opening a new window doesn't help. So I shut down Safari and restart. Sometimes that doesn't help either, so I end up having to reset Safari. Obviously, having to reset Safari multiple times a day is neither productive nor ideal.
    2. When it does that url thing, it also seems to become incapable of completing from history or bookmarks. So for example, if I open a tab and type a website name, it won't complete it, even though I have that bookmarked. Generally when that happens on the first tab of a window, I can pull up the site from bookmarks and it will load immediately. But the next tab I open in that window, will do the webpage not loading business I described in #1 above.
    3. A short while ago, i tried resizing a window and it did the strangest thing where it would expand the window space, but just give me a "gray area" rather than expanding the whole web page. I closed the window, opened a new one and resizing worked fine again.
    4. A short while ago, another strange happening: everytime I opened up a new tab in the window and loaded a site, it would merge that tab with my old tab and delete the first tab, so at any given time, it was just a single tab window. I closed the window and reopened, and voila normal tab behavior again.
Strangely, if I have two windows open - as I often do - only one window will be affected by such strange behavior. The other one will function normally. But such odd behavior is not limited to instances when I have two windows open. It's also happening when there's one window open. For reasons I do not understand, it seems something in the processes of a window gets corrupted after a little while on Safari and that window starts acting strangely.
Odd and irritating and difficult. I'd greatly appreciate your help!
    I'm using Safari 5.0.6 on OS X 10.5.8... thanks!

I don't see anything in your post regarding the Safari cache. BTW, a "reset" does not empty the cache.
From your Safari menu bar click Safari / Empty Cache. Restart your Mac, try Safari.
If that didn't help, quit Safari if it's open.
    Go to ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari
Move the Cache.db (or ApplicationCache.db) file from the com.apple.Safari folder to the Trash.
    Try Safari.
If nothing above helped, make sure there's enough free space on the startup disk.    Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure you have a minimum of 15% free disk space.
If nothing above has helped, try Safari in another user account. If you see the same issues there, log back into your admin account.
Launch Disk Utility. Select the startup disk in the panel on the left then select the First Aid tab.
Click:   Verify Disk  (not Verify Disk Permissions)
If the disk needs repairing follow the instructions for Using Disk Utility to verify or repair disks.

  • IPad mini acting strange. Apps open and close randomly. Any ideas?

My iPad mini acts strange. Apps will randomly open and close and I have no control over it. I have reset it to factory and started all over but it is still doing it. Any ideas on what I should do?

If the unit has NEVER been jailbroke, first try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...  Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  It could take well over an hour!  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow the on-screen directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.  You WILL lose all of your data (game scores, etc,) but, for the most part, you can redownload apps and music without being charged again.  Also, if you have IOS-7, read this.

  • IBook acting strange...erase and reinstalled...it's starting to be strange

My iBook was acting strangely...I can't connect to the wireless server, though ISP, network settings and Airport are all correct and the connection is visible and the strength of the connection will change. I cannot load any internet pages. In addition, my iDisk icon disappeared, then on restart, it reappeared, but I have no access to it. A "copy of previous iDisk" then appeared on my desktop with all of the contents, but I can't move them from this version as it says I do not have access. So, I started looking at the logs, to see what, if any, errors there were. I didn't have access to the security log and a few others - although I'm the only user account on this computer. Needless to say, I'm no expert so I "spotlighted" some of the things showing up in the logs. Spotlight returned articles on Apache and XTools (Xcode?) - neither of which I installed (I think Apache might come included). I looked and sure enough, XTools was on my hard drive with many, many files - most with the name or extension of pb or pbx. I started to dig a little deeper in the program and noticed some scripts in the vein of when user enters/types "xyz" initiate process or replace with "zyx", etc. I saved some of these files to the desktop, powered off and restarted. When I opened the desktop after the restart, all of the files were in the trash - not by my doing. I removed them and locked them to the desktop until I could figure out what happened. Then, they disappeared, my computer shut down and when I tried to restart, I couldn't get past the spinning gear.
I took this to the store, they checked it, said they could recognize a drive, that I should archive and reinstall. I did this, things still acted strangely. I called AppleCare, they said to back up everything and reinstall.
I did this, now am finding repairs are needed through disk utility for security and authorization priviledges. I repair, go back in a few hours, run it again, just to satisfy my curiosity and the same repairs are needed for disk permissions.
A friend has uttered the horrible "trojan horse" phrase to me...as I download regularly from LimeWire. I'm not sure what a next step would be to free the iBook of it's quirkiness.
Sorry for the long post...but it's been an eventful few days.

You can ignore any permission repair that states "We are using special...". I'm not sure about Tiger but Panther has a few others that come up if the cron maintenance scripts have run.
Other than the repeating permission repairs, is it running OK now?
