Mail activity seemingly stuck on incoming messages

On my Mac at work, My Mail Activity 'window' (the new one under the Mailbox list) continually shows "Incoming Messages", with a progress bar that never gets completed, even when I am not receiving any messages. The number of messages (e.g., '84 of 85', '88 of 89', etc. ) gradually climbs higher and higher. Clicking the "X" does nothing. This starts about five minutes after I load Mail, and doesn't go away, ever. At the same time, the 'old' Activity window (Command-0) shows no activity, except when I am obviously sending or receiving messages. This doesn't seem to affect performance, but it's really annoying. What the heck is this indicator window doing, and why won't it stop? I'm running IMAP, but I access the same mail account at home, with the same OS, and don't see any Mail Activity weirdness at all. Anyone have any ideas?

I am having a similar problem. Mail locked 4/30/2008, all emails vanished, the loading spinners just spin on emails, it says it is downloading, but a few emails in the bar stops moving left, it drops to 0 KB/s, the spinners keep spinning, and it won't download any mail on pop accounts. On accounts with no new mail, they spin and stay spinning, and then it won't allow new accounts that have been taken online to download. There is no apparent way to get them to stop spinning, including clicking the (x) box to the left of the blue download bar. I also then can't quit mail, so must force quit it. I can send test messages between accounts, and sometime they show up on the pop accounts, but the spinners keep spinning, even when it says there is nothing to download. Other functions work during this time, except quitting.
However, for reasons I can't explain, it still does fine with my .mac account, which is my only imap.
I reloaded mail from time machine from a previous day when it worked: didn't help. I did the same with the .plist mail library thing: didn't help. I reloaded all my messages, and at least they are staying put for the moment, but 1.5 days of emails seems to have vanished. Help! I need to have mail working.
I spent 45 minutes with my local internet provider's tech support: they are baffled.
Thanks, Daniel

My Apple Mail is showing 100 million incoming messages and climbing at a rate of about 20k per second. Where are all these going and how do I get this to stop?
    thanks

Whoa, was your email exposed on a public forum/TV show?
First I would sign out of Mail right away.
Second I would go to your email's website and sign into there. Examples... icloud.com, hotmail.com, yahoo.com and whatever you use. Just to see if it's happening there. If it is happening there, then I strongly suggest changing your email address and whatever website  you used it on for login information.
If it's not happening there, then hopefully when you sign back into Mail it won't happen again. If it does happen again, let us know. I wouldn't be able to help but maybe someone else could.

  • Mail in queue stuck until another message is sent

    Hi all,
I have postfix running nicely. However periodically a message get stuck in the mail queue and does not get sent until:
    1) the mail service is restarted
    2) another message is sent and this seems to ‘flush’ it out.
Is there a configuration option to get this mail flushed out automatically?
    Many thanks

I have postfix running nicely. However periodically a
message get stuck in the mail queue and does not get
    sent until:
    1) the mail service is restarted
    2) another message is sent and this seems to ‘flush’
    it out.
I am having the exact same problem. Here are the steps I've taken so far:
    1) Edited /etc/hostconfig to enable the postfix daemon: MAILSERVER=-YES- (was MAILSERVER=-AUTOMATIC-)
    2) Edited /etc/postfix/master.cf to set a wakeup time of 60 seconds for the pickup and qmgr services
    3) Enabled verbose logging by adding a '-vvv' flag in master.cf after pickup, cleanup, qmgr, flush, smtp, relay, showq, error, local, and lmtp.
    4) Enabled verbose by adding a '-vvv' flag in /System/Library/StartupItems/Postfix/Postfix, resulting in "/usr/sbin/postfix -vvv start"
    5) Restarted postfix using "postfix stop; postfix -vvv start" as root
I am using the "sendmail" program from a CGI script to send email. The message goes into the maildrop directory and sometimes it is delivered, but other times it is stuck in the queue for an unbounded length of time (not until another message is submitted or postfix is restarted).
This looks identical to the complaints on the thread below, but I'd rather not have to compile and replace postfix to fix this problem:
    http://groups.google.com/group/list.postfix.users/browse_thread/thread/26eb7a0ef b126bb5/fa38a2da8786e668?tvc=2&q=osx+queue#fa38a2da8786e668
It appears that sendmail (and/or postdrop) is not reliably signaling the pickup daemon and the periodic wakeup is not causing pickup to scan the maildrop directory.
I have tons of logs, but I don't want to post it all here. Please let me know what would be relevant and I will post.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Mail shuts down when loading incoming messages

    Hello!
well, actually the title says it all. Since yesterday mail shuts itself down when it tries to load incoming messages.
The strange thing is: when I deactivate WLAN (and LAN) mail operates just fine. I can answer mails and when I switch on the internet access again it even sends the written emails. However as soon as it tries to load incoming messages it shuts down again. The loading bar loads till the end and then the Mb/s rate decreases till it reaches 0 Kb/s and then Mail shuts down.
    What I have tried:
    - restarted my Mac
    - running the disk fixing program (I have no idea if that's the correct name for it in English since I operate my system in German) - btw it found nothing
    - starting my Mac with pressed Shift
    - deleting the com.apple.mail.plist (this didn't help at all)
    - using a com.apple.mail.plist from my TM backup
I have absolutely no idea what else I could do. Does anyone have a clue?
Waht did I do to start this bug?
Nothing. That's the problem. I left my Mac running for a few hours while I was away and when I came back and wanted to look at my mails it shut down for the first time. I can't remember installing any updates before.
I have four mail server accounts in my mail. The strange thing is that just now a mail from Yahoo was able to arrive ...
I would be so glad if anyone could help me sort out this issue. I so desperatly need my mail program.
If you have any further questions don't hesitate to ask. I'll try to provide you with any information I can give you that could be of help.
    Thank you for your time.

I have no idea what solved the problem but mail works just fine right now.
So I guess it was either the internet connection (which I still doubt as I was able to send messages) or it was the server of my mail provider.

  • TS3276 Mail activity reports receiving hundreds of messages at a time, but they do not show up in mailboxes. Please help!

This morning the activity monitor on my Mail window twice reported large streams of incoming mail. However, nothing showed up as new mail in any of my mailboxes. Have other's experienced this? Do you know what is going on?
    Thank you!

I'm having a wierd problem. I reinstalled OSX and did all the updates. Then I restored all my data from Time machine including my mail.
how exactly did you do that? did you restore Mail from finder? what exactly did you restore?
When I go into mail my folders that were on my computer all show up, but none of the messages are there.
If I look on my HD in user->library->mail->mailboxes and then look in the .mbox files that are there all the emails show up and if I double click on any they open, but when I look in the mailbox from within mail, nothing shows up.

Sounds like there's a corrupt/malformed message in your mailbox that's tripping up Mail.app when it tries to process it.
Do you have webmail access? or some other way to look at your mailbox? If so you might try deleting the message that way, then relaunching Mail.app.
You might also find another mail client can access the message without crashing - at least enough to clear it off the server.
If that fails, talking to the mail admin (or your ISP's support if it's an ISP account) may be the next step.

  • Mail Rule seems to be confusing messages

This script extracts email addresses from the body of a message and resends the message to each of the extracted addresses. It works well when one message arrives at a time. However, when several messages arrive at once, it often sends a message to the wrong address. The script is very straight forward, yet I am not sure what is going on. Any ideas?

Sorry but my AppleScript is too rusty to wade through your script. However, a while ago I wrote a script to extract email addresses from an emailed web form with a defined format and send a reminder 4 days later with a specified message.
I opted to use a mail rule to put a copy of specified messages into another mail folder - this may be more reliable for you.
For my 4 day delay I set a 'Users Daemon' to run an AppleScript every hour. This is more efficient and reliable than setting delays in AppleScript.
The most tedious task is parsing for all possible email formats - check email RFCs if you doubt this.
This script was not completed but the sections I tested on Leopard worked well. Here is the incomplete script - just in case you find something useful:
    tell application "Mail"
set fourDays to 345600 -- normally 345600 but can be 0 for testing
repeat with lastMsg from (count messages of mailbox "Pending") to 1 by -1
      try
set thisMsg to message lastMsg of mailbox "Pending"
      end try
if (current date) - (date sent of thisMsg) > fourDays then
set txt to content of thisMsg
      set AppleScript's text item delimiters to {"Email id"}
set newRecipient to paragraph 3 of text item 2 of txt

  • Excessive Incoming Messages in Mail configured to Yahoo Mail

    From a Mac newby...
Each time I open Mail on my new Mac Mini (OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.3), Mail Activity shows thousands of incoming messages arriving at a rate of roughly 40 per minute. But the only emails going into my inbox are "legitimate" emails from friends and customers.
I've configured Mail to use Yahoo Mail (although I've also set up and enabled an iCloud account which I don't use). Are those thousands of incoming messages in fact old Yahoo Mail messages that have to load onto Mail each time I open it?
Whatever they are, is this avoidable? I don't seem to be losing any messages, but it slows the computer down for quite a while, and just doesn't "feel right".
If this is an issue inherent to Yahoo Mail on a Mac, I will consider using a different main address. What sort of address is least likely to be problematic with Mail software? Changing my main email address is a big deal and I wouldn't want to have to do it again in the near future.
P.S. Would prefer answers that are understandable to, say, an unusually bright chimp

If I understand you correctly, you would like to handle your mail directly on the remote server? That is not possible from Mail.app. There may be other Mail clients that offer this option or you could simply handle your Mail with your web browser.

  • Excessive Incoming Mail Activity

I have 5 email addresses that I monitor through Mail, 3 are IMAPs and 2 POP (which are not changeable). Whenever I open the Mail program, under Mail activity it periodically shows "Incoming messages" sometimes numbering in the 10s of thousands (one time it was trying to download 40,000!). I do not receive or send even close to that kind of quantity of emails. I have two questions --
    1) Where are they going? (They don't appear to be going into any mailboxes)
    2) How can I stop them? (As I don't want 40,000 unidentified emails saved anywhere on my computer)
Thanks in advance for you help.

iCloud incoming/outgoing settings cannot be changed they are assigned automatically.  What you can do is quick the mail application, go into System Preferences > iCloud > Uncheck mail (which will remove the account) and then recheck (which will re add the account).  Before doing that rebuild would be a good idea also, be sure to open Window > Activity to see when it's done.
Did this. Did not work. Very very unhappy about Mail in this OS X release.

  • My mail activity shows more than 1 million incoming messages and is moving in lots of 10 thousand - this is happening periodically  - what is wrong?

Ever since I upgraded to Mavericks my mail has been periodically showing incoming messages at larger and larger volumes.   Sometimes in the hundreds of thousands and today in the millions.  Clearly I don't have that going on  - it seems to eat my resources for a bit and then stops - I have no idea what is going on.  Suggestions?

It is a bug. Quit Mail and then reopen it. Should fix it.
Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

  • Infinite Incoming Messages and other Strange things...

I am currently experiencing an issue where Mac OS X Mail shows that there are "Incoming Messages... 10 of 25", However, the 'downloading bar' hasn't budged for the last few days, and I have received no incoming messages. This issue has just suddenly occurred one morning when I woke up and I can find no cause for it yet. It is definitely not a problem with anything other than Mail.app as my iPod Touch is receiving the emails fine on the same WiFi connection. I have tried everything including restarts to fix the problem, and so far nothing has worked. Something even stranger, is that another account in Mail is receiving emails, but delayed by several hours behind my iPod Touch.
And stranger still, whilst I say I have been receiving no messages, I have actually been receiving one.... over and over and over again... it's now reached 15 times. Exactly the same email, same 'Date Received', same everything. So I don't want my mailbox filled up with the same duplicate email so I select them all and hit delete. Gone... However, if I click in another part of Mail and then come back to my inbox... Gasp! All of my duplicate emails have mysteriously re-appeared from the garbage So I thought I'd try deleting another random email, but the same thing happened... it had soon come back from the dead and popped back into my Inbox.
So I've done all of the obvious things like Quit Mail, and restart the computer, but nothing has worked so far. And one more odd thing... Each time I re-open Mail another one of those duplicate emails arrives.
If anyone has any ideas what so ever on what could be causing this issue or ways I could fix it, I'd love to hear them and would appreciate any responses.
Thanks a lot and I look forward to any posts.
    Cheers,
    Cuby

I am having pretty much the same problem. Every time I start mail it downloads the same emails over again and gets stuck on 56 of 199. I have tried deleting the cache, but that didn't help.
Any other suggestions would be appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Craig

  • Mail (IMAP)hangs on copying sent message or RSS?

Mail has been working well using an ancient AOL account via IMAP,but now hangs if I select one or more sent emails (or RSS messages) and use the menu to copy them. A force quit is required.
If instead I try to copy several incoming messages, it opens a window indicating copying from server and the progress bar proceeds extremely to completion but it is not possible to paste the result (if it exists) anywhere (e.g., to a mailbox on my mac).
Otherwise mail is working in that incoming messages appear normally and outgoing messages proceed as before.
The copy failures have occurred since a couple of events/changes that may or may not have caused this:
    1. Installed the last security update 2008-7(?)
2.a later system hang/near KP a couple of days ago (upper half inch of the screen went dark grey and everything froze, as if the KP screen was starting to show but couldn't even get that far.
I've since run Disk utility for permissions, then Applejack, then Diskwarrior with no effect on the situation. I rebuilt the mailboxes that were the desired sources and the target mailboxes also with no effect. I haven't tried anything like discarding mail plists.
Thanks for any suggestions on diagnosis or cure.

    Ernie,
    I don't know about Tristan but I can say;
1- Previously left the SMTP servers I have (about 7 of them, mostly fully authenticated) using the 'typical ports' setting which presumably cycles between 25, 465 and 587.
2- I have had cases where 5 messages have failed to send but only 2 of them appear in the 'outbox'. In that case mail.app was showing as 'Sending' but I was unable to see what it was sending and which smtp server it was trying to use. There was no way to cancel it either (the activity window was no help).
3- I don't use 'Use this Server Only', I typically try every server I have.
The problem is that hotel ISPs typically even try to intercept SMTP over SSL, leading to Mail.app getting royally confused.
Is there any way I can get some better diagnostics on what's really happening here? I usually find that mail.app works OK until it starts trying to send a mail, so my feeling is that I should be concentrating on the SMTP stuff. I have now switched over to using port 587 (for SMTP over SSL) only in the vain hope that the hotel ISPs aren't watching that port- my suspicion is that mail.app is poking port 25 first, getting the intercepted server and then trying to use authenticated SMTP to that (spoofed) server and getting confused- that's born out by the certificate failures I often see when in hotels.
    Thanks.

  • IOS 7.0.3 Photo app, stuck on syncing message at bottom.

Yesterday I updated to 7.0.3 and updated all my apps as well. After opening iPhoto, it seemed stuck on a message saying my Photo library is being upgraded. After numerous closer and reopening and leaving it overnight with nothing changed, I noticed that my Photo app is showing a syncing message with a wheel at the bottom that does not go away. I tried to reset all settings, removing and putting back iPhoto, removing iCloud account and finally restoring my phone and still the problem persists.
Is there anything I can do beside setting up my phone as new which I really do not want to do at all.
    Thank you.

I too had this problem, however I am running Windows 7 on a PC. This drove me NUTS for 2 days until I finally figured it out.
Through iTunes, I was trying to sync pictures onto my iP5 from a specific folder on my desktop. It would start loading the pictures when I hit the "Apply" button in iTunes, but then the status bar would say "error" and stop the upload.
As it turns out, the folder that I was trying to upload had a sub-folder with an old iPod cache in it. This is what was causing the "Syncing..." to stay present in my Photos app on my iPhone (must be unrecognized file types?). Once I deleted the cache sub-folder, I re-synced the desired folder, and the "Syncing..." in Photos went away.
    "i" hope this helps!

  • Incoming messages that never appear... Why?

Every now and then mail says it is downloading incoming messages 2 of 2 or 7 of 7 etc. and when it is done "receiving" these messages I have no new mail. My boyfriend's mail does the same thing. I am not actually missing any messages as I checked my mail server for new ones and there are not any there. Why does this happen?

It happens because you're using an IMAP mail account, which resides on the server, not your Mac. So whenever you send an email, your Mac and the mail server are communicating so that your Mac has an identical copy of everything that's on the server. So you may send one message, but that second one that you think is being sent is just the syncing process; same with received emails.
