Mail Alarm with No New Mail
I have had a problem lately with my mail application. I am using my gmail account through the Mac email program. I have it set so it plays a bell when I get a new email. But, I have been hearing the bell even when I don't get a new email.
So, is there anything that might be causing my email application to play this alarm even though there is no new email?
You can turn off or change the mail alert sound. Perhaps it's something else?
There is another sound in Mail. It's a check box that says Play sounds for other mail actions.
If I manually check for new mail and there is none, another kind of tone sounds. Is this what you hear? When there is a mail check and no new mail, a tone sounds, but it's not exactly the same as the "New Mail" tone.
Do a manual "Get Mail" and see if that's the sound you are hearing. If so, that's normal.

How do i mail merge with the new Pages and Numbers?
How do I mail merge with the new Pages and Numbers?
On Pages 09 I have a document that draws variable data from a spreadsheet created in Numbers.
With the new Pages and Numbers program update, my links are lost and I am unable to see how to correct this.Thanks Peter,
very disappointing.
My Pages 09 keeps opening in the new one.
I dont think they want me to be a loyal customer anymore.
They changed Final Cut Pro, so now I use Premier Pro
Aperture 3 has been left behind so now I moved to Lightroom 4.
And now Pages 5 does not have a vital component, so back to Word.
Sad day
Thanks again -
Probably incredibly simple question, so sorry. I have just changed e-mail after many many years and I want to e-mail everyone in my mac mail client with the new e-mail address at the same time.
If you are using Address Book, open it, create a new Group, select all you contacts by click the top one while holding down the shift key and then select the last one. Drag the contacts to the group, then send an e-mail to the group.

Notes in Mail: Every time I type a new note it is emailed to my Mail along with a new note for every change I make to it.
I don't mind the Note being updated in my mail but I don't need a new copy every time I edit/add to the note.
It's driving me mad!
Thanks.A new tab opens by default as a blank tab (about:blank).
If that isn't the case then an extension has changed that behavior.

Mail refuses to get new mail.
Mail refuses to get new mail. (Imac 10.9.5, Mail 7.3. ) Connection doc shows wheels to all my accounts spinning (IMap and POP). Activity cited Mail was trying to connect to Icloud. Evidently stuck there. This is just one problem in a succession of many with the Mail program ever since I upgraded to 10.9.5, but it is the worst so far. Restarting doesn't seem to fix it. Any suggestions?
1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

Mail stopped picking up new mail from IMAP server [MDaemon]
I've been using Mail to pick up my mail from a number of different mail accounts (MobileMe, Gmail and work mail). Everything has worked fine until a couple of weeks ago when mail stopped picking up new mail from my work mail account.
I have tried deleting the mail account and setting it up again - all that did was to lose the cached mail on my machine, although it picked up the folders from the imap server and it's looking in the folders for mail [I can see that from the Activity Window]. It also seems not to delete everything as, when I went to set it up again, the email address field was already defaulted to the one for the account I had previously deleted.
I then tried creating a new user on my laptop and setting up the work mail account under this user. It worked perfectly - it went off and got all of the mail from the server (OK by me) and started picking up the mail OK.
So I'm guessing that if I can really delete the mail fully from my main user, I could reintroduce it and all would be well. However, I've scanned the whole disk for my email address and deleted (after backing up) all files I found with the address in. Again, it still seemed to know about the account I removed.
Anyone any ideas?Troubleshooting Apple Mail

I'm picking up all of the data script related to the sending / receipt of an e-mail along with the e-mail itself and can't find a way of not showing the text. Obviusly only a command but can't find it! Help!

Checking mail ONLY when theres new mail
Hello! :)
I have a program that checks for new mail, parses data in the new mail, sleeps for one minute, and then repeats this whole process infinately. I think it'd be more effective if I only check mail when there's NEW mail, not every minute....
How do I do this?
Many Thanks!
LiamHi... just one last question... I tried using MessageCountListener but it somehow DOESN'T recognize when there's new mail (the messagesAdded method isn't called). I think I might have added the MessageCountListener wrong, but I can't figure out why.
Also, I still use a "while" loop, just so that my program won't end, and this is eating up memory! :(
Anyway, this is some of my code...
public class MAPI implements MessageCountListener
// some variable declarations
MAPI() throws Exception
Properties props = new Properties();
Session session = Session.getInstance(props, null);
Store store = session.getStore("imap");
store.connect(host, username, password);
Folder folder = store.getFolder("INBOX");
folder.open(Folder.READ_WRITE);
folder.addMessageCountListener(this);
while(true)
public static void main (String args[]) throws Exception
new MAPI();
public void messagesAdded(MessageCountEvent e)
System.out.println("You've got mail!");
public void messagesRemoved(MessageCountEvent e) {}

STRANGE PROBLEM with "Create New Mail Account.scpt" when creating POP acct.
I am using "Create New Mail Account.scpt" to create a POP account. It creates the account successfully. It fetches the mails successfully. Now the problem begins. After fetching all the mails once if u click "Get Mail" in mac mail, it fetches all the emails again and has now 1 original and 1 copy of the email set which is on the server. I just need 1 copy of the mail set not multiple. Please give me a solution or direct me to a help.
Thanks

I can't quite tell what it's doing, but open Keychain Access in Applications>Utilities, click on your Keychain on the left, put .mac in the search bar, once you find it, double click on it and click show password.
If you have no mail in there try this with Mail quit.
Drag this file to the Desktop...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
Start Mail & see if it steps you through it.
Not sure on the .uk thing, but is Date & Time>Time Zone set to the UK? -
Ical e-mail alarm and sending e-mails to self will not sync with Gmail
Hello, my mac mail is not able to fetch a e-mail alarm sent from ical.
when the alarm goes off it is sent to my Gmail account and I am able
to view it in my browser but not in my Mail program on my Mac. Has
anybody else had or have this problem and is there anything to
rectify? it. I have spoken to Apple support and they seem to think it
is a Gmail issue. I am not able to fetch emails sent to myself in my
Mail program on my Mac either, I am only able to view on my browser.
All other emails are fetched properly. Perplexing!I've had several clients tell me that they can't send from themselves - to themselves on a gmail account. They can see the messages in the gmail webmail interface, but the messages won't download to the mail program.
I suspect it's part of gmail's spam controls. It's a common spammer technique to send messages with the From: address the same as the To: address.
Another thought, hasn't gmail touted the user's ability to use the 5 or 7 GB of online storage? Maybe you use it by sending yourself an email and wouldn't want it downloaded back to your mail program?
Sorry for the lack of perfect information about gmail, I only set up an account so that I could help clients with it, not to use it for myself -
Associate a previously verified e-mail address with a new iCloud account?
I've decided to start from scratch and create a new iCloud account, having previously used my old Apple ID for iCloud. Now I'd like to associate the extra e-mail addresses I'd verified with the old account with the new one.
I went to the Manage Apple ID settings for the old Apple ID/iCloud account and deleted all the alternate e-mail addresses. I went to the Facetime and Message settings on all my devices and deleted the extra e-mail addresses there too, before removing the old iCloud account from all devices. I then set them up with the new iCloud account.
I went to the Manage Apple ID settings for the new Apple ID/iCloud account and added the extra e-mail addresses I'd previously used with the old one. Two of the addresses worked (verification e-mails were sent) but one of them said "this is already verified with another Apple ID".
When I check the Manage page for the old Apple ID, that last extra e-mail address isn't listed. However, when I try to add it back it immediately reads as 'verified' without needing to send a verification e-mail.
There must be some latent association between the old Apple ID and that last extra e-mail address, a connection I still need to sever. Since I updated firefox to 29.0.1 on my desktop, I am unable to access my email account at Yahoo.com from my ASUS notebook. "Connection problem" pops up when it tries to get new mail. I was getting mail on the ASUS on 3/12/13, but starting today I get that message and no new mail comes to the ASUS.
I deleted the account on my ASUS email at settings. The ASUS appeared to delete the Yahoo email account, but when I clicked on the shortcut, my yahoo email had updated and everything looks good.
Thanks for your suggestions! -
Has anyone else noticed an issue with the new mail icon on the lock screen?
After updating to iOS 8 there is a new mail icon on the lock screen. When I slide it up I get this message:
"Failed to continue activity- the connection to your other device may have been interrupted- Please try again"
After trying again and again I get the same message and I do not have the "other device" that it mentions. I'm not sure what is going on, does anyone have any ideas?Nope, have not seen this issue or have this issue myself. Try going into Settings and toggling off that email account, toggle back on and then send a test email to yourself. If it still persists, delete the email account and re-add and try again.

E-mail alarm goes into Junk Mail in Mail WHY??
Hi all
I have some events in iCal and set some to send me e-mail to my computer or if I'm away
I can still check (not Hotmail) but they always go into Junk folder n Mail why is this? My card is on Address Book and even though I click Not Junk it still goes into Junk folder. Is there something
that I'm doing wrong? HELP please
Thanks
Message was edited by: Serge LebelI don't know why this happens but this info may be relevant. I have recently got a new computer and set up my name in the address book without an accent on the letter 'e'. However, I noticed that iCal still sends messages using my name with an accent and there does not appear to be a way to change it. Thus the mail does not appear to come from 'me' in my address book.
Workaround: Just use the Mail rules and have any mail marked as 'Alarm' moved into your inbox. -
Mail created with "Send to Mail Recipient" disappear and are not sent
I have a small setup with a SBS 2011 server (Exchange 2010) 10 users with Windows 8.1 and Outlook 2013.
One user is trying to send mails with attachments to his college´s
but they are never send, are not shown in sent items and can not be found on the server.
The user right click on a PDF file and press "Send to Mail Recipient" Outlook opens his mail is entered into the receiver (internal receiver) and press send. The mail do not show up and as mentioned even in sent items.
I then try to do the same but send through the address book in Outlook / Exchange and these messages appears as they should.
One week later, the disappeared mails suddenly appears in the college’s mailboxes and it turns out there are some mails to external addresses as well, which were not sent until a week. All messages are now in sent mail but they have not
appeared anywhere else before.
I did some tests with the "send to" function which also had the mails disappearing - those mails has not turned up until now. (a week ago)
Now the user (AND all colleagues) are very nervous that something is wrong with their system and the mail does not arrive.
It is only 1 user this has affected but he is responsible for the majority of sales in this company and they are very afraid that they are not responding correctly to large customers.
Is there anyone who can help with debugging in such a case?
I have tried repairing Outlook, started in safe mode, checked the mail server for hanging mails but nothing shows any errors.
Thanks in advance.
Michael Grøn
Michael GronHi,
Have the user logon OWA and send the attachment, will this issue persist?
Please also confirm if the issue exists when inserting an attachment when composing a new email isntead of using the "Send to Mail Recipient" function.
Since only one user has been affected, use MFCMAPI to find if the message is stuck in the user's mailbox:
