Mail Aliases for Sending Messages

The problem:
I have an IMAP server that is correctly setup and working fine with Mail.app. When I want to send a message, whoever receives it will see the following identification: myname "[email protected]".
However, I share this account with my wife and want to keep it this way. Thus, everytime she sends a message, whoever receives it will see the above id with my name and email address. What I want is to have a way of her sending the message with an alias so the sender id would be: mywifename "[email protected]".
What I have tried so far
After reading many "alias"-related posts in this and other fora, the closest solution I found was to create a dummy imap account for my wife (i.e. one with a dummy setting for the incoming messages and a correct smtp setting for her name and email addres), but that comes to the expense of getting an error message every time mail.app tries to retrieve messages from the dummy server address (unchecking the mail preferences-advanced option "Include when automatically checking for new mail" only partially solves the problem, as sometimes I use the "get mail" button and get the unwanted error message).
Other thoughts
I understand this is possible when you have a .Mac account, since it allows you to use its predefined aliases when sending a message, but I couldn't find a way of having the same flexibility with an external imap server.
Thanks in advance for any hints on this issue.
Best regards,
Paulo

Hello David,
Thanks again for your time on this!
I am comfortable with the concept of an alias. Still, I see the way .Mac implement their "alias" feature as a different process than just adding an email alias or, in other words, just adding another email address associated to a mail account.
In my previous post I explained what I was able to do with what I am calling here as the .Mac "alias" feature, where I was able to not only associate another email address (i.e. an alias) to my .Mac account but to also associate another full name to that alias, and the whole pair full name "alias" to the email account.
In the end, I have such pair linked to my one .Mac account so when sending an email from that account I can choose whether it will appear to whoever receives it as MyName "[email protected]" or as MyWifeName "[email protected]".
This is exactly what I want to do, but at least with Mail.app I can only do it when using my .Mac account.
I totally agree with your statement that Mail allows me to specify one Full Name for each mail account, but I can tell you from my first-hand experience that the above extra full name "alias" feature is also possible for a unique .Mac account. The apparent contradiction (one full name only vs. two pairs full name-email addresses for the same account) is, IMHO, caused by the way .Mac implements its "alias" feature. I would guess that my account has only one real full name, but the .Mac "alias" feature allows me to use other "extra full names" in conjunction to extra email addresses (i.e. alias) for that unique account. In a loose analogy, that might be working in a similar way the name and short name within a Mac OS X user account works (i.e. one unique account identifier, the short name, but with the possibility of having an extra identity for that account, the name).
Anyway, the fact is that what I am already doing what I want to do (i.e. to have an extra pair MyWifeName "mywifename@myimapserver" for messages being sent from the same account) when using my .Mac account, but I can't do it with my other imap account. The workaround I cited in my first email is the best I could achieve so far, but it is a sub-optimal solution to say the least. Maybe there is a way of choosing an "extra" full name "alias" pair for the message being composed.
All the best,
Paulo

  • Mail can't send messages

I have AT&T Yahoo DSL and my imac mail can't send messages. It says the smpt server has timed out trying to send the message on port 25.

Open Connection Doctor in the Window menu
Double click on whatever is showing as red.
    Check the following settings.
    pop.att.yahoo.com
    smtp.att.yahoo.com
Click Advanced to enter the SSL and port info.
Both incoming and outgoing mail use authentication
Use (SSL) and SMTP port 465.
Use (SSL) and change the POP3 port 995.
Confirm the above settings before clicking OK.
    Then check connection doctor again.
There is an incoming mail server and an outgoing mail server for each account.
So for each account there should be 2 servers.
Count how many servers there are set up in connection doctor.

Mail will not send messages. Help please: it receives OK but parks my outbound stuff in either Drafts or Outbox

Thanks for your answer. Apprciate it very much. Just prior to receiving your email, I got back online. However, as I had tried what you suggested (and a lot more as I am 'reasonably' competent), and had been so doing since yesterday afternoon, I do believe that what you suggested was correct - that it was my third rate ISP that was at fault.
    Nevertheless, many thanks once again.

  • How do I set up Mail only for sending? (Don't want to receive messages)

Maybe answer is somewhere on the board but I can't seem to find it...
I think in the past, on older version of Mail, I was able to set up a personal account on my work computer so that I could send from the personal account in Mail. Thing is, I don't want to see or store incoming personal messages (too much distraction at the office!).
Can Mail be set up this way?
If I uncheck "enable account," then I don't see option to send from that account. But if I check it, it shows me incoming mail from the account.
    Thanks in advance.

How about Mail -> Preferences -> General: Check for New Messages and select "Manually" from the drop down.
Now Mail won't look for incoming mail unless you tell it to.

  • Keyboard shortcut for sending messages on Mail suddenly stops working

I've created a keyboard shortcut (Command + Return) specifically for sending manssages on Mail. When I open Mail, this keyboard shortcut works perfectly but suddenly it stops working.
If I close and reopen Mail, the keyboard shortcut starts to work again, but for a while.
    I'm using OS X 10.9.1 and Mail 7.1 (1827).

Give this a try if you haven't already.
    System Preferences
    Keyboard
    Shortcuts
At the bottom of the left panel go to:
    App Shortcuts
If Mail.app isn't there, add it.
    Under it add Send.
Now choose your key combo i.e.
    ⌘↵
Worked for me mail Version 7.1 (1827) running OS X 10.9.1.

  • Absence of Mail Notification for undelivered messages.

I have recently sent some important mail messages with attachments, they never arrived and I didn't get any notification to let me know. I have looked and can't find anywhere that I can 'switch' this setting on. As far as I am aware they were within the size limit but I have noticed that even if messages with attachments are just slightly less than the allowed size they won't even leave my mailbox. Is there anything I can do about both these problems. Thank You.

There a few issue here. First, if an e-mail doesn't go through, it's up to the server that didn't hand it off to send back a message to inform you of it. There's nothing to do in Apple Mail (or any other e-mail program, for that matter) to set in order to request notification. It's quite possible that a server botched handling mail along the way, and it's far more likely that mail was not delivered because something in the message cause SPAM-blocking software to throw it out (these days, that's the most likely scenario), in which case you'd never be notified.
Mail has no limit on the size of messages. Your Internet service provider may have limits, and the recipient's e-mail service may also have limits. What happens if you go over the limit is really up to the mail services involved. Your local service provider is likely to return an error to Mail at the time you attempt to send it, indicating that it can't be sent. Your recipient's mail service could: throw the message away, strip out the attachments, or return the message back to you with an explanation why it's refused. There's no rule to state that the recipient's mail service has to do anything in particular.
Generally speaking, for anything other than a trivial image, you want to place the file in some web-accessible location and then send a link to where the file can be retrieved.
Also, keep in mind that when you attach a file to an e-mail message, it grows in size by 35%. This is because e-mail is a text-only service, non-text data needs to be converted to text for e-mailing and the conversion method is called "base-64 encoding". Base-64 encoding uses 4 letter to represent every 3 bytes of data in a file (and it adds a few extra characters). So, if you attach a 10M file, your e-mail attachment's actual size will be 13.5M.

  • Mac Mail: Check for new messages doesn't work

    Hi,
In Mac Mail the setting at  "Preferences -> Check For New Messages" I have set for manual and yet Mail still fetches emails when I haven't asked it too. I previously had this setting set to check for messages every hour but it ignored that setting too so I set it to manual but this setting is ignored. Ideally I'd like to check mail every four hours but there isn't a setting for that.
I'm running Lion and have IMAP email accounts.
Any idea how I can get Mac Mail not to ignore my Check For New Messages setting?
    Thanks!

Thanks for the link. Well I never would have found that out without some help. I saw the IDLE in the IMAP settings I didn't know it was a kind of PUSH / FETCH thing. Anyway I've got it on manual now and only seems to get emails when I send one or press the button. I've only changed it a little while ago so I hope this is actually fixed.
Thanks again it was driving me nuts!

  • Iphone e-mail will not send messages

My IPhone receives e-mail but will not send mesages.  I've gone into the advanced mail settings but I don't see any outgoing settings.  Can anyone help me?

Someone at RR told you it is RR that prevents using their SMTP server to send messages with their email account when connected to AT&T's EDGE network?
Did you try using 587 for the server port for RR's SMTP server on the iPhone?
Add 587 to the end of RR's SMTP server address separated by a colon.
    smtp.addresss.com:587

  • Why does Mail 'check for new messages' despite it being set to 'manual'?

I want to only receive new email either once per hour or better still manually (once or twice during the day at a time chosen by me). That way I won't be bombarded with emails all day and can get on with my work.
So, I set the 'check for new messages' to 'manually'.
Nevertheless I get email coming in frequently. Possibly every time I send an email, it also checks for new incoming mail (I'm not sure but that's my hunch).
How can I stop Mail from pulling in my new incoming email?
Any answers to this? If I can't figure this out or it's not possible in Apple Mail, it might be time to switch (but I don't want to!)
    Thanks in advance
    Dan

    Thanks Linc, works great.
There should be a hint for this in Mail's preferences, underneath the 'check for messages' option

  • Mail refuses to send messages--please help

    Hello all,
I am running system 10.8.2 on a newish iMac.  For the second or third time in recent months, Mail can't send any mail, although it can receive mail.  The message I get when trying to send a message is:
"The STMP connection to server "mail.optonline.net" failed.
Select a different outgoing mail server from the list below [note--all optonline.net] or click Try Later to leave the message in your Outbox until it can be sent."
I had not changed anything about my accounts when this happened--no password change, no changes to my settings.  I have restarted the computer to no avail.  I know the SMTP settings are right, because I can send mail from my older MacBook Pro on the same home network.  When this has happened before, it has resolved itself in a day or two.  This time it has been four days and counting.  I tried creating a new account, and that doesn't work either.
Any thoughts?  Thanks in advance for your help!

The SMTP settings are pertinent to the individual computer that they are set on, not on the network.  So you could have the SMTP settings correct on your older MacBook Pro, but they coud still have changed and be wrong on your iMac.  I would double check them on your iMac.  In Mail "Preferences click on the drop down arrow at the right end of the line "Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP):".  Especially note the settings in the window  resulting from clicking on "Edit the SMTP Server List",  box shown below:

  • Mail can't send messages: Doesn't allow fix the problem either: Help plz.

    Hi all,
Mail doesn't allow me to send messages through my recent created aim.com account
I'm trying to fix the problem by changing smtp server configuration but it gives me the message:
"The servers marked with alert icons are in conflict and cannot be saved.
Two servers cannot share the same address and authentication settings.
Resolve the conflicts and try again."
There are no icons whatsoever and deleting any similar server won't take effect because Mail WON'T save the changes.
When clicking "ok" to save changes, Mail will throw the same message quoted above. So I have to click "Cancel"
Any idea to solve this issue?
    Thank you.

  • Apple Mail can never send messages!

I have a gmail account that I view through Apple Mail. Anytime I try to send a message to someone, I get this error.
"Cannot send message using the serve smtp.gmail.com:[email protected]
Use the pop-up menu below to try a different outgoing mail server. All messages will use this server until you quit Mail or change your Network settings.
    Message from : <[email protected]>
    Send Message using: smtp.gmail.com:[email protected]
Options: Cancel, Use Selected Server, or Try Again Later."
Ususally, I click Use Selected Server and it works but sometimes it doesn't. First of all, it should work the first time around and never give me this message. Secondly, even after the second attempt it's not 100% reliable.
    What's wrong?
    P.S.

    Never Mind. Fixed it.
Apple Mail users: At times, Mail may misinterpret your SMTP server settings. If you currently have 'smtp.gmail.com:[email protected]' in the 'Outgoing Mail Server:' field of your settings, please try changing the field to 'smtp.gmail.com' and saving your settings.

  • HT3529 Does IMessage charge anything for sending messages Internationally?

When I use IMessage to send messages from Germany to LA will it charge me extra?

The Apple Support Communities are an international user to user technical support forum. As a man from Mexico, Spanish is my native tongue. I do not speak English very well, however, I do write in English with the aid of the Mac OS X spelling and grammar checks. I also live in a culture perhaps very very different from your own. When offering advice in the ASC, my comments are not meant to be anything more than helpful and certainly not to be taken as insults.
The Message app has two functions, actual iMessages that are text messages that use Apple's servers to connect folks with iOS devices and use wi-fi and possibly a data plan and also text messages using the SMS protocal and can communicate with any cell device with this capability and for which telcos will charge their normal fee.
If the message bubbles are blue, then they should be free iMessages. If the message bubbles are green, then they are SMS text messages and will incur a charge.

  • Which load testing tool is appropriate for sending message to a tcp socket

    Hi,
I am new to the testing world. I have developed a messaging application, where the client sends his requests on to the server program which opens a socket and listens for messages. Then all mesaging goes on. I want to load test my application. I have tested it with Apache's JMeter, besides that are there any other load testing tools.
The clients need to send messages on a tcp socket. I really need this, please help me.
    Thanks,

    Dude,
    Write one!
I test any servers I've written by hammering them by writing a multi-threaded test program to simulate client activity, namely an initial login and then whatever other activity the client would usually perform. Maybe in your case this would involve the sending of messages, the checking/reading of new messages and logging out.
I usually get my timing statistics by simply capturing a start time and an end time (the difference being the m/s taken). ie: using java.util.Date.
Run the test program from a single host to iron out any initial problems, but then be sure to run it from as many different hosts as you can get your mitts on!
