Mail almost crashes my computer, what do I do?

I've been using the Mail App for a really long time and had no problems. I've been trying to upload videos and the MacBook (2010 model) will freeze, sometimes for a minute. This is quickly overheating my computer and slowing down the entire system. The computer is getting to the point that it might start crashing when upload attachments and sending them.
I am currently running Mavericks 10.9.2 on a 2010 model MacBook.

Just as unwelcome as the application freeze is the application crash. In this case, you're not trying to force a program to quit; you're trying to prevent it from quitting on its own. If a program crashes repeatedly begins misbehaving in other ways. It's time to move on to a time-tested set of potential fixes.
I believe that you already restarted your mac. So lets dive in:
Did you  updated the problem program?
Does a program consistently crash when you try to perform a particular action, such as saving a file? If you recently updated to Mavericks and the symptom doesn't occur with any other applications, check to make sure the program doesn't have a conflict with the new OS.
You can reinstall the program;
Check console;
OS X takes copious notes on what its various part are doing; your application send a constant stream of status messages to the OS, too. All these notes and messages are stored in log files, which can be really handy when you need to troubleshoot your mac. Launch OS X's Console Utility (Applications/Utilities). If you don't see a list of logs in the left column, click the Show Log List button in the toolbar. From the list on the left side locate the Diagnostic Information heading and then the User Diagnostic Reports area. Here you will find entries for those applications the have crashed on your Mac.
Try log in as a different user as well.
