Mail alphabetically re-oder smart mailboxes in sidebar
I searched but didn't find this specific issue.
Mail v3.4
I rearranged my smart mailboxes and now would like them alphabetical again. Is there an easy way to do this without having to manually drag them into position?
Thanks,
John
Sorry, that's not currently possible. An AppleScript might do it, but I don't know of any that exist.

Mail Crashes while Loading Smart Mailbox
Does anyone know how to resolve this problem?
Mail keeps on crashing BEFORE I can do anything.
Here is what I have noticed: 2 windows are opened. Both are loading Smart Mailbox. I cannot close them before the crash as I am getting a spinning ball immediately when I launch mail.
Here is what I did just before this happened. I have created a Smart Mailbox and entered (I think) too many queries.Hello Steven.
If for a POP type account, try the following.
With the Mail.app quit and using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Mail > this POP account named folder (named by the user name and incoming mail server for the account) > INBOX.mbox.
Move the INBOX.mbox to the Desktop.
When re-launching Mail, a new INBOX.mbox will be created automatically by Mail within the account named folder.
If all 12 messages are successfully downloaded, this indicates the old INBOX.mbox moved to the Desktop has some corruption.
If successful, control-click on the old INBOX.mbox moved to the Desktop and at the menu window that appears, select Show Package Contents.
List the package content file names and size of each here. -
Mail: a curiosity about Smart Mailbox
Hi
as mentioned before, I'm migrating my email from Entourage to Mail and would like to "maintain" some search rules structure. Moving to Mail, I don't find a "parameter/feature" creating searching rules:
When I specify a mailbox to search in (i.e. "Message is in Mailbox"), the search is limited to only this mailbox and not to its "child". This means that if I have a structure like this
Inbox
|
+-- pippo
+-- pluto
and I specify just Inbox as "Message is in Mailbox", the search is performed only in Inbox and not into Pippo and Pluto. I need this feature because I have to exclude in the search an imported mailbox with a lot of sub-mailbox.
Thank you for the support
DanieleSounds like you know what you are doing, but just in case...
Smart Mailbox is a virtual view into your inbox and your archive mailbox. Your description of moved emails still showing up in your smart mailbox makes sense since it doesn't care what maiblox the emails are moved from. You can add additional rules to filter out inbox vs archive so you only see new messages from those contacts, but I'm guessing you probably already know this (but just checking in case this is easily solvable).
As for the behavior of select all move to archive forcing already archived emails to vanish you are correct that it sounds buggy.
If your email is Gmail they don't treat archives the same way most IMAP email servers work so you may need to investigate further.
If you can set up your smart mailbox to exclude already archived emails you can probably just avoid this issue all together.

Mail: search and smart mailboxes stopped working
Hi folks,
In mail the search and smart mailboxes have stopped working. I have a hunch it's something to do with iCloud as my partner is now logged onto iCloud using iTunes etc. Can you help?My accounts are POP. But I have managed to fix the problem. When you mentioned Spotlight, I went into System Preferences thinking I may had accidentally turn off emails as a search option in Spotlight. It was on, but I turned it OFF and then ON again, and now search works in mail as usual. And my Smart Mailboxes too.
It's one of those things
Thanks for your help -
Mail folders and smart mailbox
Can someone tell me what the difference is between a regular mail folder and a smart mailbox?
I made a lot of mail folders under "on my mac" and I just found that I can make a smart mailbox. How are they different?
When do you use one and not the other?
Thanks, Susana smart mailbox is not a regular folder. it's a saved search. you do a search and save the search parameters so you can repeat the search quickly. that's what a smart mailbox is. no actual messages are moved anywhere when you make a smart mailbox.

Why are Smart Mailboxes and Email Rules on other computers, mail iCloud is off
I have iCloud turned OFF for mail.
Creating/adding Smart Mailboxes or Rules on a iMac show in the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air.
How do I disable this?Hi Mark,
It's my understanding rules MAY be beging pushed because iCloud -> Document and Data is checked.
Possibly this something that on the radar to be fixed in a upcomming update, but I have no information on that.
I'm told a good way to get Apple's attention about issues is for as many people as possible to goto http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html and submit feed back.
The more feedback they get on an issue the more likely they will take action. -
Need Help with Mail Smart Mailboxes
I'm just getting started with Smart Mailboxes and seem to be stuck on a key feature. Once I've set up the criteria for the mailbox and the incoming mail goes into the Smart Mailbox, how can I delete it from my inbox without losing it in the Smart Mailbox? Am I missing something here with the concept? I'm tired of moving mail into specific mailboxes and thought this might be the solution but now I'm not sure. Anyone have any suggestions on this?
A Smart Mailbox is just a search. Messages are not "in" the Smart Mailbox, it is a list of messages that satisfy the search criteria. The messages must reside elsewhere.
If you want to automatically move messages to regular mailboxes, use Rules, rather than Smart Mailboxes. -
Since Mountain Lion, Mail.app is acting quite weird.
- Smart Mailbox doesn't always load on start of Mail.app,
- Smart Mailbox superimposes messages over one another in the message-list,
- Strange characters appear after attached ZIP files in sent messages and make the rest of the mail invisible,
- Rules are not always applied (already a problem in Lion),
- Sometimes Mail just will not get mail from some accounts (my iPhone does),
All these points can happen together or separately. When I see'm all together, I restart Mail.app - often have to do that 3 or 4 times to get it right again.
And I do NOT want to switch to another email client.
Anybody else seeing these things too?I am having similar problem with Smart Mailbox setting for "This Week" and "Last Week" Smart Mailboxes.
"This Week" - Smart Mailbox never shows any mail and "Last Week" - Smart Mailbox shows what would be the "This Week" email. I have confirmed the Smart Mailbox settings for both unit are correct. I have tried rebuild no success.
Thank you,

Smart Mailboxes empty / dumb
I'm syncing Mail over four computers using my mobileme.com. All running same version of OS 10.6.8. Periodically after I MERGE my "Mail Rules, Signatures and Smart Mailboxes" they still appear, but no longer function. When I go to edit the smart mailbox, the criteria have all disappeared and I get four blank windows. I have had to recreate smart mailboxes twice and reset sync data from one computer to mobileme to reverse sync to the other computers. The mail server is Exchange 2007. Could that have something to do with it?
I guess if you wait long enough, you can answer your own questions. I realized that at least one of my computers had an older version of Mail.app (4.4) and none of the computers were running the program in 32-bit mode. I didn't even know that was an option. However, I have since updated all versions of Mail (on 3 computers) to 4.5 and am running them all in 32-bit mode. This has fixed the mysterious empty smart mailboxes problem. In short, my smart mailboxes are, once again, my friend!

Help! My Smart Mailboxes disappeared from my computer.
How do I view them from both my .mac account and my G5 using the stamp mail icon. I can't figure out to sync them.
thanks,
KateWhen creating a mailbox with the Mail.app (not a Smart Mailbox) your location choices are "On My Mac" which is stored locally on the hard drive only and if your have a .Mac or IMAP type account, you can select the account from the pop-up window for the location to create a server stored mailbox.
Any server stored mailboxes created should be available under the .Mac account icon in the mailboxes drawer.
I'm also having difficulty syncing data. For example, if I delete
an email from my G5 and then go to .mac, it's not viewable but
if i go back to my G5, i can see it in the trash.
Not sure why you want or need to keep messages marked for deletion synchronized with the server but in order to do so, go to Mail > Preferences > Accounts and under the Mailbox Behaviors tab for the account preferences, select "Store deleted messages on the server" in addition to "Move deleted messages to the Trash mailbox".
The server stored Trash mailbox for the account will then be available under the .Mac account icon in the mailboxes drawer.
For example, if I delete an email from my G5 and then go to .mac,
it's not viewable but if i go back to my G5, i can see it in the trash.
A .Mac type account is really an IMAP type account and behaves in the same way. Unless you select "Store deleted messages on the server" for the account preferences with the email client used, messages marked for deletion with the email client used (such as the Mail.app) will be stored locally on the hard drive and not on the server.
This behavior with an IMAP type account is the same regardless the email client used on any platform - Mac (OS X) or with a PC (Windows). -
Smart mailboxs does not show any content.
I have a 27" iMac, late 2009, running iOS 10.10.2. None of my smart mailboxes show any content. I have rebuilt my mail and checked the smart mailbox conditions. I created a new smart mailbox, Unread, Delivered this week, and still no content. Thanks,
Have you reindexed your mail by deleting these three Envelope files from the Users/Home/Mail/V2/MailData folder and rebooting?

I have three accounts set up in Thunderbird, two are unified and the third one isn't. I've looked through the setting in the tools-account settings for each of the three accounts but I cannot see anything that refers to unified folders. I have the view-folders button set to on.
I've seen a solution on your forums which reads:-
Help menu (Alt +H) > troubleshooting information Click the show folder button.
Close Thunderbird
open the mail folder open the smart mailboxes folder
Delete the inbox and inbox.msf files
Restart Thunderbird.
I don't understand why this solution should make all my inbox's unified, and I don't want to loose any emails.
Can anybody help please?
Response appreciated.Bonjour Crumbleey,
Excuse me, I don't understand your problem ... Can you describe it and tell me what you want to get ?
I have been using Thunderbirds for years now, I installed it in many PCs, I solved many problems using only the standard possibilities of Thunderbird, I never had any need to intervene in the emails files and folders.
If you want to delete an account which has its own set of folders, if you want to keep its emails, first move the emails in Local folders.

Vanishing smart mailboxes in Mavericks
After being quite hesitant on installing Mavericks, I upgraded my MacBook and my iMac. However: all my mail stored in the smart mailboxes is unaccessible. This is a real disaster. I tried reading solutions in other posts, but seem not to get it.
So.. what to do??? How do I get my mail archive back....
AVThanks, but that is of course the first thing everybody should try - as did I.
After trying out several solutions the Forum suggested, (time machine, reboot, rebuild etc.) I got stuck and started a chat session with the Dutch Apple support Centre. It turned out that nor time machine, nor the usual solutions worked in the normal way. It took the support centre and me the whole afternoon to solve it.
We went to library, emptied the V2 folder, copied that to the dashboard (for safety)
Then went to time machine, copied the mail folder prior to the Mavericks upgrade.
Then went to mail preferences and copied the mail preferences prior to the Mavericks upgrade
Finally the mail was copied to V2 folder, the preferences were put in right place (library) and I shut down the computer.
By startup, the mail was all there again.
I have a number of mail accounts so it takes up quite a lot of space... that's why it took so long... They looked at my computer from a distance which was very helpful. I am very grateful to the Apple Crew for helping me out so well!! Even though the iMac is rather old, this is a Mavericks Bug so they did not charge me.
Anyway: now I'm set to go on with Mavericks but this was quite stress. Hopefully next versions of Mavericks will have solved this bug.

Hi,
Since a few days, my smart mailboxes are disapearing when I launch Mail application. I can recover them from my mobile me account (reset Mail rules, signature and smart mailboxes from server), but after restarting the mac (or maybe just quiting and relaunching mail app) they are gone again.
I have tried to repair disk authorisation…
Any idea ?nothing else to do indeed because we can't get them back using time machine.
i tried this one: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4185203?start=0&tstart=0
but no luck. -
Hello there -
Hopefully someone can help, because this is just frustrating and weird. In Mail on Mac OSX Lion, I can create all the Smart Mailboxes I want, but if I try to create a Smart Mailbox folder, it shows up just fine in the sidebar. But, as soon as I close Mail, then re-open, the Smart Mailbox Folder is gone as if it never existed. This happens whether or not I actually put any Smart Mailboxes in the folder. Anyone else seen this issue and have suggestions?Okay, I think I just discoverd a workaround. This will work if you're lucky enough to already have a smart-mailbox folder that persists after close. (Somehow I had two such folders that already existed and weren't subject to the mysterious disappearances on closing the app; perhaps I created them in a previous OS X release?) Anyway, here goes:
Locate an already existing smart mailbox folder that's working properly. Select the folder (in the sidebar).
Duplicate that folder using the "Duplicate Smart Mailbox" Command. (It's on the contextual pop-up menu or available via the gear icon in the lower left of the window). This should produce and exact copy of the folder and the boxes inside, appearing at the bottom of the smart mailbox list.
Edit the duplicate folder to put the smart mailboxes you want in it, and delete the previous mailboxes (duplicates) that you don't want.
The new folder structure should now persist between launches of the app.
There you go. Not the most elegant process, but workable. Don't know if there's a method if you don't have at least one smart mailbox folder already though.
