Mail and airport connection

I just got a new powerbook and I have it hooked up to my G4 via an airport connection. I can get on the internet and use iChat, but when I try to set up mail I cannot connect. I set the mailbox settings the same as on my G4. HELP

  • Network locations and Airport connection

I've just installed Leopard on my MacBook Pro (late 2008) and did all the software updates (including AirPort Extreme Update 2008-004 which - as I found out too late - seems to cause a lot of problems).
Network System Preferences show funny beaviour: Every time I try to switch off AirPort connection for a new network location the network location will disappear completely and settings will switch back to the last active network location. So it is impossible to create a network location with AirPort inactive.
Apart from that, my System does not connect to my AirPort Base Station (Dual Ethernet, 802.11b) wireless LAN (not public, WEP-encrypted, MAC address filter). My other Macs (OS X 10.4 Tiger) connect to the AirPort wireless LAN without any problems. (I double-checked all the settings of course.)
Has anybody had similar problems? Thanks for your help.

Hi: located in england bought a new macbook pro upgraded leopard to 10.5.5 with that upgrade that got pulled very quickly.
I also have an old g4 with 10.4.11
The g4 works perfectly in recognizing the airport network and is up and running in no time. no problems.. the macbookpro with leopard has problems recognizing and logging in tothe the same router. it needs help or I just i there waiting. there is no set way of getting it back to working. but I tend to go into network preferences and it says airport logged on but no connection. the g4 is happy and set up. I then turn off airport and turn it on. eventually I am back and running just fine but do not go to sleep or close the machine cheers
ps. I work from locations with different routers and different isp's same problems......
therefore it must leopard...(or the airport card in the machine)

My iMac running 10.7.5 has suddenly developed the habit of asking for my keychain password every 10 minutes or so.  iTunes, mail and airport are the usual requesters. It's making me nuts!  And no, I have not recently changed my password to start this new issue.

    Hello dowaco
Try running Keychain First Aid on your keychain or just rese your Keychain to create another keychain to see if that resolves the issue of the repeated prompts for the password.

  • 10.4.8 update - issues with mail and airport

Gah! Just as I was signing up so I could post on this board, my airport connection went bye-bye.
Initially I tinkered with my router (linksys) settings. Recycled everything a bajillion times. Not sure what caused a partial resolution, but my connection is no longer crawling, but it drops a few times a day. The only solution at this point is to recycle modem and router and restart computer.
Now I am having issues with my mail application. Whenever I "get mail" I am prompted for my password. I type it in, plus check the box "add to keychain". App searches for mail. So I went into account prefs and noticed there is no password in the dialog box. I type it in. If I save and close the dialog and then reenter, the password is once again missing. Huh??
So I reinstalled with the combo update (I had previously installed via software update), verifying/repairing disk before, repairing permissions after.
I have removed the system config folder in order for the system to create a new one.
When I look in keychain access, the only thing in there is the airport login. I have also performed a keychain first aid. Nothing appears to be wrong.
    Any suggestions??
    I patiently await responses.
Oh, and I applied the first update in proper fashion as well. No weird third party stuff, etc. And I didn't have any of these issues pre-update...
    mbp   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    1. Reset the router by holding down the button in the
    rear for 10 seconds.
I've done that ad nauseum, plus tweaked router settings, plus recycled modem/router many times. It does not appear to be a problem with the router hardware or software.
    2. Toss your Mail Account, and make a new one.
If indeed that is the solution, is there an efficient way to save/export messages so I don't lose them?

  • Video converting and Airport Connection

Hi guys. i dont know whats going on here... Everytime i started exporting a video from final cut, or converting something on quicktime or visualhub or whatever, anything that demands a lot of power, my airport connection gets lost... It doesnt show it visually. all the bars are still black but suddenly no other SSIDs appears on the list (normally it appears a couple of them), and nothing works, nothing network-wise. not even my apple tv. then i decide to turn off and on the airport. so not even my network appears anymore... I noticed that If i leave it like that for a while (dont know how long) it will eventually come back, but if im a hurry i have to restart the MBP...
Anybody has had any expierence like this?

The current Apple thinking is that the entire world has access to fast broadband and wants to distribute home movies to friends and relatives via download (iCloud) rather than mailing them a DVD. The fact that nothing could be further from the truth has so far had no effect on this policy. If you scream and shout loudly enough down the phone Apple may send you a free copy of iDVD. That worked for some, but is now said to have been withdrawn by Apple. Also, you can complain bitterly here, perhaps suggesting that Apple could have provided a choice between using iCloud and burning DVDs:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/
Whilst Macs with a Superdrive continue to be able to burn video DVDs, the software for so doing, iDVD, is no longer included in the iLife bundle that comes with OS 10.7 Lion or will come with OS 10.8 Mountain Lion. And it is no longer included in the iLife 11 from the online Apple Store: http://www.apple.com/ilife/. Your only solution is to look on Amazon or eBay and try to get an older version that includes iDVD.
However, the vastly more expensive FCPX can burn a DVD without iDVD or DVD Studio Pro involvement, but lack the themes etc of iDVD.

  • MacBook Pro and Airport connection problem

My MacBook Pro has a volatile connection to my Airport Express base station.
I have a 2-month old 15.4" MacBook Pro (Intel Core 2 Duo), all software updates are installed, etc. I connect to the internet through an Airport base station. For the past few days my MBP has had a dodgy connection, slowing down at seeming random and then occasionally disconnecting from the base station entirely, although the Airport icon on the MBP is always on. While downloading a file I noticed that the speed of the connection was incrementally slowing until it stopped, and it was only after a couple of retries and then connecting to the base station again (by finding it amongst the other networks on the pull-down menu that you get when you click on the Airport icon) that my connection resumed at its previous speed.
My 12" PowerPC iBook connects to the internet over this Airport base station at full speed, no problems.
I've tried resetting the PRAM on my MBP without change.
One possibly noteworthy change is that this past week I updated my Parallels software to 3.0, which may have an effect based on some of the other threads I've read.
    What now?!

After trying all of the above the suggestions, the problem returned as before. However, after digging some more I discovered that the issue appears to lie with the 10.4.10 version of the Mac OS; when I checked the software log under the system profiler I noticed that I had installed that update at about the time my Airport problems began. Apple then quietly released a v 1.1 combo update to 10.4.10 on July 2nd, which once installed appears to have resolved the problem. You can find the download at http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx10410comboupdatev11intel.html
What's curious is that originally Apple listed that the v 1.1 combo update resolved some issues with RAW image data, and some sound problems, which don't seem to have anything to do with Airport.

  • Mac desktop and Airport Connection

I have problem on My Mac desktop. I can't connect to my airport. my other devices had no problem with the airport connection. It shows full bar on my wifi bar but when I started to browse it tells me not connected to the Internet. I've tried resetting everything but no luck for me. Please help. Thanx!

What specifically have you tried resetting? If you are seeing and connecting to your network then that's a big first step. I would try first to see if it's a settings issue. The easiest way to do this is to create a new network location and see if the issue persists. Go to System Preferences -> Network. Select the box next to the word "locations" at the top and select "edit locations." Hit the plus symbol and name the location whatever you want (I use "test" in these situations). Make sure it's selected and hit "done" and then Apply in the bottom right of the preferences page. Give it about 30 seconds and then try to browse again. If you're successful, it was a settings issue. You can now do one of two things: find the individual setting that was causing the issue in the other location, or just use the new location you've already created. You'll probably opt for the latter, which is what I would recommend. Very, very few users have a need for a particular location setting. If you're still having a problem then it may be more complicated to resolve. I would try it on another network (at a friend's house, or at Starbucks) to make sure it's not network related. Just because your machine is the only one not working doesn't exclude the network as the root of the issue. If you have problems there, I would consult your local Apple Store or Apple Certified repair facility as it may take some deeper troubleshooting to resolve.

  • Mail and Internet Connection conflict

I have a VPN PPTP connection running. Most of my other Mac internet apps run fine (Safari, Fetch), for that matter Mail can read new emails. The problem is that Mail won't send mail until I close the VPN connection. I figure this is a port conflict, Mail output and Internet Connection using the same ports, is there a way to change the port either is using? If so, any idea what I should change it to?

  • HT4759 Before upgrading to OSX Mountain Lion from Lion, my mail and iCloud connections were fine. Now, the connection is almost non-existent (iCloud "connecting" forever, mail icon jumps). My network is good. Any solutions?

Does anyone know how to eliminate the "jumping mail icon" that stems from iCloud not connecting correctly? I just upgraded to Mountain Lion from Lion and before, everything was fine, but now the synch between iCloud and mail seems to be out of whack and the "connection doctor" doesn't help and nothing seems to get rid of the problem.

  • Mail and airport

I think I have read something about bridging my mail to airport, my wireless connection. It seems that I cannot send out mail but can receive.

This is usually caused because of a typo in your SMTP server address. If you can receive, the problem isn't with the airport connection.

  • Why can't ichat, Mail and Skype connect to my ethernet cable?

I recently moved to Ireland and my internet here is provided by my school, it works with my studentnumber and password. So filling in the proxy of my school, as my network,  i can connect to the internet using Safari, iTunes and firefox. I just had to give in my student ID and password. But when I turn on Mail, Skype or iChat, they can't connect to the internet because there's no connection.
The applications are working just fine but they just can't connect to the intenet.
    Please help!

    Hi,
    Umm,  an interesting one.
    iChat
iChat up to an including iChat 5 in Snow Leopard has never like Proxies.
In fact if you did you them it did better when the System Preferences > Network listed the Proxy rather than the iChat App itself.
One thing I would try is to go to iChat > Preferences > Accounts and for Any AIM Login go to the Server settings and change the port to 443 and try Logging in.
The AIM server accept logins on almost any port.
Port 443 is used by Web Browsers for Secure site and Mail can sometimes use this port for some mail servers so it is likely to be an open port in any routing device there is place between you and the internet proper.
Google Talk Logins will also accept changing the port to 443
Other Logins such as plain Jabber Names do not allow different ports to be used.
However thses changes may at least allow you to Text chat.
    Skype.
if you go to the Preferences here it should list a port that the app would like to use.  (it tends to be different with different downloads)
Normally if it finds this port is not open in a router it uses Fall Back ports (Normally port 80 used for Web Browsing)
As it is not working it suggests the school are using some other method to prevent it.
    Mail.
Mail uses a whole host pof different ports normally based on what type of service you have and who with.
It is fairly common though for outgoing mail to be on port 25.
Incomming mail may be on port 110, 565, 996, 995 and quite a few others
However all these are below the port 1024 threshold  (most routers have ports upto this point opne for things like Web Browsing and Mail although on more sofisticated routers even these can be blocked.
I have one email account based on an old Dial-up service.
I can acces the Incoming server to retrieve mail via my current ISP but I need to be logged in via Dial-Up to use the outgoing server (Although Mail sends it out on Port 25 their end blocks accepting it as it is not coming from the right place).
Something similar may be happening for you with Mail and the Proxy with the services you are using.
    Things to do.
    1) Post in the Lion area about using Proxies.
Someone there is likely to know much more than I do.
    2) Talk to the School IT dept. about accessing email accounts using the Proxy.
They may not be deliberately blocking this but may not have given out the info needed.
    3) They may be blocking Skype for "security" or Bandwidth issues or even to stop students "Wasting Time".
iChat doing a Video chat is very bandwidth intensive and may be blocked because of that (as well as students using it during class).
You may find the school is unwilling to compromise on any of this.

  • Weird problem: Random musicstream and Airport connection blackouts.

    Greetings Appleforum members,
this is the first time I post on this forum so bear with me concerning any formalities or convention my post might lack (in which correction is appreciated).
I have a problem with my airport express over which I stream music by connecting the Airport Express to my (secured) wi-fi network.
The problem consists in having seemingly random dropouts of my music stream (music temporarily goes mute or stops playing entirely) that's sent from my 'Blackbook' which is connected to the same wi-fi network as the Airport express (I just 'added' the latter to the network) and in certain cases the Airport express itself gets knocked out as well (the light flashing orange for a bit, though this isn't necessarily the case when the music drops out).
To add to the overall weirdness it even seems to affect my wireless mouse (a cheap mouse with a wireless USB receiver) whose movements
gets sporadically distorted along with the music stream interferrence; when I pause iTunes, the mouse acts normal again (allthough this too isn't necessarily the case when the music stream drops out, but coincides with it sporadically).
I know my way around Mac OS X for the most part, but lack the necessary experience in networking Airport issues to solve this problem and to say the least, it's quite annoying when your music stream drops out on occasion, sometimes near every minute for an hour long (in which case I revert to smaller wired speakers which do not have this issue, meaning that it is some sort of wireless problem).
I have an iPad as well and have connected it via Airplay to my Airport to avoid my mac (hoping to isolate the problem to its network card), but the iPad shows the same sporadic dropouts, though less frequent and less strong.
I have honestly no idea how to isolate the problem or even narrow it down a bit so if anyone here has any tips or preferably a complete solution, it would be much appreciated. I hope to return the favor someday concerning someone else's problem on these boards (should I have useful insights).
    Thanks in advance, Robin, NL.

    Hei,
I have experienced the same thing for ages, and finally got around to trying to fix it. I seem to have found a solution which may well be temporary, but has worked fine for several days now whereas I got frequent dropouts when listening to podcasts via iTunes.
My solution was to change the wifi channel from 6 to 1 - this was recommended by an Android app Wifi Analyzer, but I see it is quite dynamic as wifis are turned on/off in my vicinity.
You change the channel via Airport Utility, Base Station Manual Setup, Wireless Tab, Channel... simply try another one and see if it helps

I wanted to transfer our residential DSL account that was under my husband's name to me. They told me that I could keep my old Verizone-mail account, but when they did the transfer, my e-mail account got disconnected. Moreover, presumably since I have the same e-mail address as my 'new' address, I can't seemto activate my internet. Now I've been without an e-mail and Internet for the last several days. I called the 1-800 number > 10 times, spent hours, and still no one fixed it. This is crazy!!! Can anyone help?

  • Mail and Airport and Proxy Oddity

    Setup:
Powerbook g4 with airport extreme card connecting through Airport base station graphite which is connected to my school's network. Everything works well (internet, etc) except...
I CAN retrieve and send my email (POP) with Entourage and Thunderbird, but when I put in the EXACT same settings in Mail, MAIL CANNOT connect.
Here's the trick-- using the same EXACT settings in Mail, if I use a wired ethernet connection on the same server, Entourage, Thunderbird, AND Mail work flawlessly.
It seems that the issue could be with the Airport Base station, but why does Entourage and Thunderbird work but not Mail?
Perhaps I am overlooking a Mail setting, but Mail works when hard-wired, just not through Airport.
    Frustrated.
    And Ideas?

The Solution was to turn off the SOCKS proxy in the network settings on the Powerbook.
I've left this post just as a FYI.
