Mail and Comcast issues
For the past couple of months my son is having problems with Mail and Comcast. It regularly asks for a password to access and then the password does not work. We "change" his password to the same password and it will work for a day or so and then stop working again. I used Comcast's tech chat to try to fix, they had me changing ports. This did not work and while he was thinking of something else, I changed the ports back and mail worked in both directions. That last for a couple of hours when his password stopped working and we had to reset it again. Any advice from those who have encountered the same issue would be appreciated.

I have this problem regularly, almost always with one particular mail account. I'm convinced it's due to a slow response by the remote mail server. When it doesn't respond fast enough, Mail interprets that as a login (password) problem. Unfortunately there seems to be no way to tell Mail to wait longer for a response.
I just cancel the password request, then use the menu items Mailbox -> Take All Accounts Online or Mailbox -> Online Status -> Take "account" Online. Sometimes that works the first time, sometimes not.

Very Odd Issue Using Mail and Comcast
I have been unable to send email from my Comcast email account in Apple Mail. It shows emails as having been sent fine, but they don't arrive at the other persons mailbox. I have tried sending test emails to myself, to no avail. I tried trashing the preference file, which cleared up the issue, only for it to return several hour (or even minutes) later. This issue is particularly annoying because one would never know it exists. All emails sent from this account appear to send fine, with no errors being reported, but never are sent. I can send emails fine from my gmail account using Apple Mail, and for experimental purposes I tried Thunderbird, which worked fine. The SMTP server is clearly not the issue. I tried other servers, including the local server, using RapidoSMTP, but still, the same issue. Just a note: I can recieve emails on that account, but not send them. My installed plugins for Mail are: AttachmentScanner, MailFollowup, and Growl Mail. If anyone can offer any tips on resolving this weird issue, please share them.
If Mail put the message in Sent, that means the outgoing (SMTP) server told Mail that the message would be delivered. If the message never reached its destination, it could be because the SMTP server didn’t fulfill its promise or because the message was filtered out by either the recipient’s incoming mail server or the recipient’s mail client for some (probably spam-related) reason.
Check that your System Preferences > Date & Time settings are correct. An invalid timestamp in the message headers could be the reason one of the servers involved is rejecting those messages.
It’s strange that the problem happens with Mail, but not with other mail clients such as Thunderbird, though. I can only guess there is something about the way the messages are composed/encoded when you use Mail that causes them to be considered spam at some point. If you compose those messages as Rich Text, try composing them as Plain Text instead. -

I've never encountered this before, but my iMac can't seem to "remember" that my specified default mail client is "Mail" and my default web browser is "Safari". Even after I set them up in the Preference window, when I relaunch "Mail" the default mail client selection reads: "No applications found." and the default browser that shows up is "Opera" (which I have loaded on, but I hardly use it!
I'm running an iMac G4 FP and Mac OSX 10.4.8
Anyone have any thoughts on how I can fix this?
Thanks!Sounds like your LaunchServices are all messed up. I believe that OnyX has a rebuild LaunchServices function. Did you try it? There are also cache files that can be removed:
"/Library/Caches/com.apple.LaunchServices-0140.csstore"
"/Library/Caches/com.apple.LaunchServices-014501.csstore"
plus your personal over-rides in this plist file:
"/Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/com.apple.LaunchServices.plist"
If you remove the above files and restart you should be taken back to the default state of the system. If you aren't and you may need to rebuild the LaunchServices database from the command line:
http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20031215144430486
But if you have Onyx that should do the same thing.

Husband has an i7 Sony pc with Microsoft Live Mail - set up using Cox .pop settings.
Purchased a Mac Air for him and have been trying to set up Mail using smtp account settings through Cox. I have gone through this many, many times. I finally called Apple and got a guy who pretty much did the same thing. He sent in mail/I sent out mail and it appeared to work. Husband received a few e-mails - all ok. The NEXT am - we got up and all the e-mails were gone. Disappeared.
Please advise as to what could be the problem.Article about storing draft messages on server behavior might help. View it here.

I can send but not receive email using Mail and Comcast
My incoming mail [Mac Mail 3.6(936) ] slowed and now has stopped. I get error message "mail.comcast.net" on port 995 timed out. I can send. I can receive at Comcast.net. I have tried changing the port setting to 101 and no SSL and 587 (the comcast online set up guide), etc. and sometimes it works once then fails again. I have deleted the p-list in the Mail Library and restarted and still nothing.
I deleted the account and set it up again but still no luck. Oddly the Preferences says deleting the Accounts will delete everything but the Mailboxes are still there. Part of the problem?
I do not have this issue using Thunderbird which is a program I do not like.
I used Comcast's various online guides, a long useless chat and useless email to no avail. My Primary Account Holder email (which I never use) works but not my every day email account.
MAC OS 10.5.8
MacBook Intel Core Duo
Mac Mail 3.6(936)*Sorry didn't see how old this thread was* Jono1968 if this could help you......
Here is what I would try -
Run the disk permissions utility....see if a repair works....
On the mail menu, go to Window => Connection Doctor - do you see errors (red dot) If so, what does it say the error is caused by?

I just have to share: My wife and I have just gone through a maddening ordeal wherein she was unable to send email through our ISP, Comcast. In our investigations we noticed a large number of people using Comcast with the same problem, which is why I'm bothering to post.
We went through all the machinations discussed; changing port configurations and whatnot. We trashed preferences. Everything. Crazy part was that besides her MacBook Pro we have my G5 tower and a G4 Powerbook of which both were able to send mail while hers could not.
Well as a last-ditch I decided to restart the modem and Airport. While I was standing there waiting the appropriate amount of time my wife was still messing with her computer. She was on the internet and still able to access websites even though our modem was unplugged.
Lo and behold we looked under the Airport menu and to our amazement the MacBook was set to a wireless network of a neighbor's instead of our own. It allowed receiving mail but not sending. Somehow that that neighboring network was set as the default location. We just moved in here and before we could get Comcast out here to connect us we used this network for out intrnet connection (and please let's not get into the politics of that one!).
So, y'all having issues like this don't forget to check your network connection to be sure you're set to the right one!It shouldn't make any difference which version of Mail is provided at Comcast's website since the account setup process is no different or significantly different between Mail versions but the settings provided by Comcast are important and do make a difference.
So it is one of two things. You are not entering the required account information properly (which is not likely) or Comcast has provided and continues to provide outdated account setup information at their website.
So it the latter, you will need to contact Comcast technical support by phone or check their website for account setup information/instructions with Outlook Express or Outlook which may be up to date and correct.
You need the incoming mail server, user name format (the portion of your email address in front of the @ sign only or your entire email address), the outgoing mail server or SMTP server and is the SMTP server authenticated with your account's user name and password.
These settings are the same regardless which email client is used so all you need are these proper/correct settings. -
Mail and iPhoto issues in 8.2
Question is how to fix iPhoto and Mail in 8.2?
Just a little history to start. Reinstalled 8.2 after I had Java issues. Having 2T drive worth of Time Machine means nothing. Erred 3 times ~40min into a 4hr backup from several different selections of Time Machine dates. Gave up and picked and selected backup pieces. Music, iPhotos( 57K), Contacts. Before I could backup the Mail using Time Machine files, it erred with a "ran out of space" error. Seems I left the Time Machine backup "on" selected and it was backing up after I reloaded 8.2, pictures, music, etc. I understand now a "feature" of Time Machine is to clear the oldest backups (Aug 11) for incremental backups unless you have an immense backup (new software) and then it deletes all of the history when it its a space limit. I ran out time to get the mail.
That was the history for the last two days. Yesterday everything worked. Downloaded photos of grandson, sent email, and used Java with the weatherstation. All was well with the world....Today Mail can't find Mail in ~/library/mail starting up. Won't error to send to apple, but makes me quit as below. I have verified Mail is where it belongs as below:
At the same time Mail had problems, so did iPhoto. iPhoto starts to open and crashes. (think I sent 60 crash reports to Apple). Sometimes it opens and I see the event folders then crashes. Most times it crashes as the iPhoto start window begins. Very inconsistant at where it crashes. See the last section for one crash report. Can someone assist? I really don't want to reload 8.2 again (last resort). 8.0 version ran very well and I liked it better than Snow Leopard and Lion.

Thank you for contacting National Instruments. I am sorry you were experiencing those issues with your application builder. Although you are using LabVIEW 8.2 (upgraded from 8.0.1), you should not be getting those errors, especially since you were able to successfully build applications in 8.0.1. It would be very helpful if you could drill down which vi (LabVIEW vi) is causing you to change these options. With this information, I can dig a little bit deeper to see if there has been a change in the function from 8.0.1 to 8.2. Please let me know what you find.
Best Regards,

Mail and Gmail issues in Snow Leopard
I've used Gmail with Mail for years, and it has suddenly stopped behaving. Mostly it takes *forever* for a message to be sent, but downloading messages can also take it's sweet time. I have several Gmail address I check, all are doing this. iPad and iPhone both work fine, so the issue seems to be isolated to the laptop.
I'm running Snow Leopard on a MacBookPro from mid-2009.
Many thanks for help.
marieYes. I'm having a whole series of problems with Mail.app and GMail. The problems are pretty well documented (links below), but I haven't seen any good fixes or heard any indication that Apple is taking them seriously.

In addition to archived emails returning to the inbox, I'm seeing significant delays in new mail appearing in my inbox: sometimes as long as hours after the mail appears on my iPhone and in the GMail web console. -
Problem with Apple Mail and comcast addresses
Sometimes Apple Mail will not let me send to comcast.net addresses, including my own. I get the message: "Cannot send message using the server smtp.comcast.net:[my e-mail address] All other e-mails sends and receives fine. I'm using 10.6.7. What to do?
Thanks, R. Actually, in the current instance, I realized the message would not send simply because it was addressed to an invalid address - I corrected the address and it went out fine, but I wish the program would have told me that was the problem instead of sending me on a wild goose chase about possible server or account setting problems.
I'm still not sure whether this was the case the previous time I had the problem, a day or so, when I was sending a message to multiple addresses (25 or so). There is little way for me to know which of those addresses is or may be invalid. -
I switched over from a leased modem to my own modem and airport express today - the connection is working perfectly except I cannot get Mail to work at all - it is "offline" no incoming or outgoing mail - It will receive mail into the Comcast server but Mail never gets it -
I spent an hour with the Comcast guy on the phone and all settings appear to be correct but no connection - any suggestions or help most appreciated -
Steve BerdeFrom a help site:
"Since December 1998, Port 587 has been the Internet standard (RFC2476) port for authenticated email submission for mail clients and is supported by most major mail hosting providers."
I've looked around and see that the Comcast blocking port 25 problem has been driving people nuts for over a year. Many people are saying that port 25 is blocked both ways at Comcast unless you buy a business account.
I found this Comcast help page that does show how to set up the port 587 with security settings:
http://help.comcast.net/content/faq/How-to-configure-Mail-(Macintosh)-to-use-port-587-for-sending-e-mail
I assume that port 110 can still be used as the incoming POP server.
I also found these instructions for setting up a Comcast account for sending and receiving while on the road using ports 465 and 995:
1. On the Account Information tab, make sure that the following fields are filled in correctly.
Account Type: POP
Description: Comcast E-Mail
Email Address: Your full Comcast.net E-Mail Address
Full Name: Your name as you would like it to appear in E-Mail messages
Incoming Mail Server: mail.comcast.net
User Name: Your user name is everything leading up to, but not including the @comcast.net part of your e-mail address. For example, if your E-Mail address is [email protected], you would enter test_account as your User Name
Password: Your Comcast assigned E-Mail password
Make sure that smtp.comcast.net is the selected Outgoing Mail Server:, and then select the Options... button.
2. On the SMTP Server Options window, change the Server Port: to 465. Make sure that Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) is checked, and that Authentication: is set to Password. Enter in the same User Name and Password
3. Now select the Advanced tab at the top. On the bottom half of this window, make sure that the Port: is set to 995, and that Use SSL: is selected. Authentication should be set to Password.
Hope some of this helps. Comcast is one of the more troublesome email servers out there. -
Snow Leopard Mac Mail and Comcast
Hello, I just changed my internet provider to Comcast. I configured Mac Mail like I normally would and configured my lap top and iPhone. For some weird reason, my home computer (with MAC 10.6.2) cant retrieve my emails, whereas my black Macbook laptop with 10.5 can, as well as my iPhone.
Anyone out there know what might be going on?
Thanks for your help!Did you follow the instructions Comcast has for setting it up on your Mac? http://customer.comcast.com/Pages/FaqDisplay.aspx?Guid=3aaac773-9491-49a7-b809-2 957fc398921
I know this might be a funny questions but I know a couple email providers that use different settings depending on the platform. -
Mail and photo issues - two part question!
Hello,
The Mail function on both iPad and iPhone stopped working a couple of days into a trip we just took out of the country. I had to sign into my Gmail account to receive and send emails and photos. It literally quit on June 9.... I've checked all the settings and can't figure it out even when a message appears saying I am not connected and to check settings.....so frustrating.
In addition..we imported new photos from our camera to photo stream and when I looked for an older photo, I realized that all the old photos were gone! I have different photos on camera roll...those taken with iPhones (emailed or my own) or my iPad. Is there a limit on the number of photos Photo Stream will hold - and if so...where did the older photos go???
Thanks for any help you can offer on either or both points.Do you have the source code to the original DOS program? If not, you have a REALLY big job ahead of you trying to figure out what all the bytes represent.

Help please. When you purchase DiskWarrior they will send you the disk and all the instructions. It's not hard to do. You will be booting from the DiskWarrior disk, so you don't have to worry about getting your Mac running before you receive DW.
Just my 2 cents... DW has saved my PBookG4 and my iBookG4 both without having to take them in for service.

I cannot get the mac mail program to display photos from iPhoto except in a very small image. I have tried selecting actual size, large size, medium and small. The photo goes into the mail message as very small. I tried copying the photo to my desktop and not using iPhoto and dragging it into a mail message. Still small. I did not have this problem before Leopard. any idea?
when you add an image to a message, there is a little button "Image size" at the bottom of the message. Click it and choose the appropriate size.
