Mail and Hotmail

How do I setup my Mail using a Hotmail account?

That's correct. Yahoo operates in a similar manner.
Amongst the popular national providers, you can set up free POP3 accounts with Google's Gmail or IMAP accounts with AOL's AIM Mail. Most ISPs—Comcast, for example—do not offer IMAP options with their embedded free accounts.
If you're going to switch providers, seriously consider one which offers IMAP, as it is vastly superior to POP3 technology in virtually every application involving multiple client accounts. And be careful with Google, as GMail POP3 accounts operate in an unconventional manner.

  • Yahoo mail and hotmail help, please!

I have OS X 10.5.8, and for few days I have been unable to log into yahoo mail and hotmail. i can open the login homepage and then get "Safari can’t open the page because the server unexpectedly dropped the connection. This sometimes occurs when the server is busy. Wait for a few minutes, and then try again." after entering login and password. i checked for updates, and it says i have all current updates. after reasearching this, i tried turning ipv6 off and having no proxies checked, but it didn't help. I deleted cookies (and checked to always allow cookies), emptied cache, restarted, and nothing. I don't use the mail application on my computer, i just log in to these sites with safari. sometimes i have been able to get into yahoo and do a few things, but then i get a page that fails to open sooner rather than later. i can get to most other pages, though i have been getting the same message frequently for some other pages, more so than normal. not sure what my options are or what changed even, but i just want to be able to sign into mail. thanks for any help.

You can also try downloading a different browser and see if the problem still exists, I have never had this problem, and I have Yahoo, there have many issues with them, that I thought were at my end, but then they would come back with, oh we changed this that is why I mentioned this.
You can try with this and see if the problem still happens and this might suggest the former.
If nothing else this would also help as a diagnostic tool.

  • Mail and hotmail account sync issues

    Hi,
I have recently reinstalled my mac to factory settings having cleared the HD. I then upgraded to OSMaverick for the first time and reinsatalled all my progames etc etc.
There are clearly some upgrades with Mail in Mavericks which look very nice. However, when i resync my hotmail account, it will only display the previous 350 or so emails in the inbox. (before the reinstal, Mail would display all 15000 emails from the past 5 years).
The rest of the emails appear to be in the trash folder as the following number is dispayed:15000. however when i click on the folder, there are no files actually in the folder.
How do access my old emails, and move them, into the inbox or somewhere else, so they are visable?
I know its some thing to do with the POP relationship, but its annoying that i previously didnt have this problem with Mail, and now i suddenly do, post upgrade.
    Thanks in advance.

You can also log into hotmail in a browser and see if the 15000 are visible in the trash there.  If they are there create a new folder to move them into it. Then set up Mail for IMAP.
Its a bit 20th century using POP and keeping your entire archive in Inbox which is at the mercy of any POP client.  Use folders and IMAP.
When setting up Hotmail as IMAP follow Csound1's tip on page 6 of this thread regarding Option key https://discussions.apple.com/message/25745753#25745753

  • Mac Mail and Hotmail problem

    Hello,
Sorry if this has been asked before but I have searched with no luck yet.
I recently set up Mail to retrieve mail from my hotmail accounts.
It worked fine for about 4 days then just stopped working. It will not connect to the hotmail server.
I have tried all the suggestions I have seen during my search but nothing works.
I deleted my accounts on Mac Mail and started again but now get the message that the server "pop3.live.com" is not responding during the setup.
Why would this work for a few days then without any changes from me just stop working? Why does the server not respond now but did four days ago when I initially set it up without any problems.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated
    Regards.

The same thing happened to me and probably to all other users of the httpmail plugin. I looked up on the Automagic Software website (creator of httpmail) and they mentioned that as of September 1st 2009, Microsoft has withdrawn support for HTTPmail protocol.
If someone else has got it to work, please post here. Thanks.

  • Mac Mail and hotmail sync

Hi, I'm using mac mail and have just added my hotmail account but when i check emails on mac mail i also have to check it on the hotmail site itself.
Is there any way to make it so that checking mac mail will sync to the hotmail site.

  • Synchronizing Apple Mail and Hotmail

I have a Hotmail e-mail account that I now access via Apple Mac OS X Lion 10.7.2 MailI have no problem receiving, sending and deleting etc. e-mail messages. However, when undertake any of these activities (sending, receiving and deleting etc.) utilizingApple Mail and access my Hotmail Account via Apple Safari Browser there is nosign that any of these activities have been executed i.e. messages read or deletedin Apple Mail appear unread and undeleted in Hotmail.
Consequently,I am using this medium to solicit assistance on how I can configure Apple Mail orfor that matter Hotmail in such a way that whatever I do in Apple Mail (e.g.  open, delete or send message) will be reflectedin my Hotmail Account

I'll try and answer this for you. I use a Hotmail account with Mail on my Mac. For one thing Hotmail is really a Web based Mail service. It allows mainly people to access their mail through any browser. Now, just in the last couple years Microsoft has improved Hotmail to allow for access through Mail programs which previously was not available unless you had purchased the Hotmail Plus service. Which by the way is still a option. The problem is that when you make a change from say your Apple Mail app with your Hotmail. it will not change on the Hotmail server until you sync with it. So in other words you want to make sure it has sync'd before you close Mail if you want those changes such as deleted mail or sent mail to actually happen. This now also occurs with your iCloud mail as your messages are also stored in the cloud. Its a great way for people with multiple hardware to access and sync mail accross platforms. In my own experience I have better luck with Hotmail on my iPad then my MacBook Air through its Mail App. Not sure why? As far as getting confirmation. I think the syncing is about all the confirmation you will get.

  • How to receive emails on both, icloud mail and hotmail

    Hello
I use my hotmail account as my Apple ID (since im not able to use my icloud account(@me), and to only have 1 account for everything on Apple),
and i use my icloud account (@me) for Mail.
When i receive mails from especially Apple (for example, some one comments on this question) then i only receive a mail on my hotmail account,
which is bad because i dont check it often, since ive almost totally moved to icloud.
My question is: What do i do, to (also) receive these kind of mails on my icloud(Mail) ?
    Sincerely

Do you have any idea of how i do that?
I've been looking around Hotmail.com(which is now Outlook.com) but havent found it.
I would appreciate if you could give me some clues..

  • Mac Mail and Hotmail

I have my Mac mail synced with hotmail and another email account.
Even though I continually check the box to remember my password in keychains when the pop up box comes up asking for it, it still pops up every now and again.
Does anyone know why this is and how to stop it.
In Mail preferences I put in the password as well and when I come out and back in it disappears.
    Please help,
    regards, Ian

    Ian,
Search is your friend. There are numerous topics about this, and it is a commonly reported problem with Hotmail accounts, and virtually unique to Hotmail. For one, see:

  • Sync Mail and Hotmail

    Hi Everybody:
I set up the app mail in a new Mac Book. Everything is gone right, until I find that my inbox is empty, when I sign in in the Hotmail Page.
I found that all my mails are now in the Mac, but I need access to my mail sometimes, directly from the live page.
Is there a procedure where I can sync my mail to upload my mails in the mac back to the page of hotmail?
    Best regards

Set mail to leave a copy on the server, Hotmail (on a Mac) is POP, and POP does not sync.
    1. Select Mail>Preferences.
    2. Click the Accounts button, located at the top of the window.
    3. Click once on your account, as it appears in the Accounts list.
    4. Click the Advanced tab.
    5. Be sure that the Remove copy from the server after retrieving a message box is set to never.
    6 Close the Accounts window.
    7. When prompted to save your changes, click the Save button.

  • Help! Mac Mail and Hotmail issues

Hello. I'm looking for help with Mac Mail. I am a new Mac owner and haven't had any trouble before with hotmail on my ipod and iphone. Upon setting up the new mac and mail account (using a hotmail account) it started receiving messages, approximately 30. During that time, we turned off our Century Link wireless and set up a time capsule as wireless with the Century Link router/modem combo now acting only as a modem. After that, the email account stopped receiving messages. We tried removing the account and readding it and now no messages show up in the inbox at all. (not sure if changing the wireless actually affected any of this, but the timing was coincidental) When I look at "get account info", I can see that there are 543 messages listed under the Hotmail account under the heading "all messages on POP server." However, these messages do not actually show up in the Inbox. I've tried other help sites and as far as I can tell, the incoming and outgoing servers are set right. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • Making Mail and Hotmail account the same

Hi, I just started using mail. I like it, but I have a lot of folders in my hotmail account that are nicely arranged and have documents I like to refer to. Is there a way to bring these folders--the way I have them in my hotmail account into mail? Also, can I export my hotmail contact list to mail or address book? Finally, when I delete a message directly from mail is there a setting I can turn on so that it automatically deletes in my hotmail account as well? Thank You

No. hotmail provides POP access only. POP only provides access to inbox, not any other folders. this is a limitation of hotmail, not Mail. it would be the same in any other email client. if hotmail provided IMAP access you could get to all those mailboxes in Mail.
Also, can I export my hotmail contact list to mail or address book?
probably, but you have to check with hotmail. do they allow exporting address book contacts at all? if so you should be able to export them from hotmail and then import them into Address Book.
Finally, when I delete a message directly from mail is there a setting I can turn on so that it automatically deletes in my hotmail account as well?
no. this is again a limitation of POP. you could do this with an IMAP account which syncs everything with the server so this would be automatic. if you want these features you might want to look into getting an IMAP account. gmail and AIM provide free IMAP accounts. mobileme is also IMAP but costs 100$ per year. but it offers many other features beside email too.
    Thank You

  • Mail and hotmail help !!!!

Help !! This has been going on for about a week now.I can receive mail ( though mail on my imac ) from my hotmail account, but everytime i try to send an email this message comes up.
Connections to the server “smtp.live.com” on the default ports timed out
Select a different outgoing mail server from the list below or click Try Later to leave the message in your Outbox until it can be sent.
Any ideas why and what i can do ? ( im not that great with computers so please be basic !!!! ) thanks

Hello, several reports of HotMail troubles lately, but have you logged in using WebMail in a Browser to see if the locked sending?
In Mail's Window Menu, choose Connection Doctor, any red dots for status, if so what is the exact message?
Then click the Show Details button & Check again.
The Password rejection can confuse people since it's a catch all meaning...
This Password, Username, Authentication method... is not recognized on this Port to this Server.
So if WebMail works it's not Name or Password, but one of the other ones.
    The receiving email ports are:
    IMAP is port 143
    IMAP-SSL is port 993
    POP is port 110
    POP-SSL is port 995
    Outgoing ports are...
SMTP and SMTP-SSL is on ports 25, 587 and 465. Port 587 has to be SSL, and port 465 is enforced TLS-wrapped and is generally used by Outlook users.
