Mail (and other programs) crash without trace

Hey all,
Really curious thing started happening to me a couple days ago - Mail, Safari, and other programs will just crash without warning - and without a dialog box of any sort. Like they were never launched - and it happens on things like when I add attachments, or go to some webpages that I used to go to without problem.
Any Ideas?

Jeremiah,
There are a few things to try here.
1. Do a Hard reset of the phone, hold the Home and sleep/wake button down until you get a apple logo on the screen. If issue continues go to next step.
2. Reset network settings.. Settings>General>Reset> Reset Network settings (This will power cycle the phone)
Does the issue continue after both of these steps?

• HT5167 Finder, Mail and other apps crash since updating to Lion 10.7.4. My 2009 Macbook pro now unuseable. Am I alone?

I obediently clicked okay when Appple software update urged me to upgrade to Lion 10.7.4. No problems with my 2010 mac mini. But every time I boot up my late 2008 macbook pro and proceed to open an app (a Finder window, or Mail, plus others) a message appears sayng the app has crashed and offers me the following options: report, ignore, cancel or reopen. But clicking any of these doesn't do a thing. Nor can I open "force quit" to close the offendng app. Like Mont Pythn's fabled dead parrot, my 10.7.4 is deceased, lives no more, 'rung down the curtain and joined the bleedin' choir invisible' singing the Lion sleeps tonght.
Anybody out there know how to wake up a Lion safely?

• Safari and other programs crashing constantly

Just picked my Macbook Pro from repair at the Apple Store.
I had the logic board replced and the top case due to water damage.
Laptop has always worked fine, unitl then.  I've got it home this afternoon and Safari, iTunes etc. all quit instantly or a few moments after opening.
I tried fixing this by updating OS X to Moutain Lion 10.8.3, but no luck.  Everything is up-to-date etc.
Help is much appreciated.  I hope I've not wasted money on this repair that could have gone towards a new machine.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Step 2
Still in the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the process. The report name starts with the name of the crashed process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

Installed on laptop (MacBookPro) and now Mail and Address Book crash at launch. I have removed the mail plist and the address book files indicated here elsewhere and nothing works. Any ideas????

Fixed it. Created a new account, put my exchange mail on Mail on that account, sync Address Book with server, took the Sources folder and moved it to Address Book in Application Support onmy main account and now all work great. A lot of work but is now working. Thanks to all!

It's not your wording that's at issue. It's the incorrect information you provided. Go back and read my reply.
I'm sorry but I can't help your mis-wording. I can only make sense from what you have written. Your location is the UK so I must assume English is your first language without other information to go by.
If you wrote the same thing a hundred times in one day, then you'd use copy and paste, too. So don't insult those of us who do.

• Safari, mail and others don't save history or settings

Hello,
I have an 11" Mac Book Air with OS X Lion, which I purchased some months ago. After using the computer for a couple of weeks, something started to go wrong with the .plist files. Suddenly Safari, Mail, ICal, and other programs stopped saving history and preferences. Some of the symptoms of these proles include.
Safari: browse history stopped saving after a given date. Nothing I browsed after that date is there when I reopen Safari.
Mail: I have mail set with all of my e-mail accounts, including POP and IMAP. If I try to change something in my preferences, it does as long as I have the program open, but if I log out and then back in, none of the changes I made remain.
ICal: non of my preferences are saved.
After experiencing these problems for a while, I decided to reinstall Lion. Everything went back to normal... but only for a couple of weeks, the problems are back once again.
Any tips on how to sort this problem out will be much appreciated.

I will address your second question.
First, make sure your iPhone and iPad have absolutely identical Apple IDs.  If they do, use that Apple ID in Settings > iCloud on your iPhone to select the "Notes" option.  Lo and behold, all your iCloud notes should appear on your iPhone.

• How to close Internet Explorer and other programs running on Windows?

In order for Flash Player to be installed or updated, any programs that use Flash Player must be closed.  This includes Internet Explorer or other browsers, instant messengers, Skype, etc.
These programs may be running in the background, not as visible windows, but need to be closed anyway.
To close such programs use the Windows Task Manager.  To start Task Manager, take any of the following actions:
Press CTRL+ALT+DELETE, and then click Task Manager.
Press CTRL+SHIFT+ESC.
Right-click an empty area of the taskbar, and then click Task Manager.
Once the Task Manager is running, select the Processes tab.  On older Windows version you may need to click on the Process Name or Image Name header to sort the process names.
Now right-click on every process that the Flash Player installer needs to close (e.g. iexplore.exe), then select End Process.
It would be desirable if the Flash Player installer could perform that action by itself; I have therefore created an enhancement request.  If you were affected by this problem, please head over to the Bugbase and vote for this request: https://bugbase.adobe.com/index.cfm?event=bug&id=3548136

Every time i search nfl on google, firefox freezes then it sometimes unfreezes and other times crashes.

Hello,
Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)
* On Windows you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* On Mac you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the option key while starting Firefox.
* On Linux you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by quitting Firefox and then going to your Terminal and running: firefox -safe-mode (you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
* Or open the Help menu and click on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item while Firefox is running.

Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshooting extensions and themes article for that.
To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.
When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.

• Mail and address book crashes with SL, not able to import messages

Hi,
I've got about 10 years of email messages current inaccessible since I upgraded to SL.....
Currently, Mail and Address book both crash upon opening.
I don't need address book because luckily I have jettisoned that program, but I do need to somehow extract my sent messages from mail.
I've already taken these steps to try to get it working again and re-import my messages
-> deleted com.apple.mail, com.apple.addressbook preference files
--> moved mail folder to the desktop
--> deleted mail and address book folders within "application support" folders
I'll be happy if I can find a way to simply open mail and re-import the messages, but so far, I'm locked out. The furthest I can get is the "import" command from within mail, and then I get the spinning beachball.
Something seems to be deeply messed up within my addressbook/mail world, and it doesn't even want to start importing messages without crashing.
any ideas?
thanks
I can't

We have not tried a user account, we can if you think it is worth the time?
50/50 chance of a clue.
If I install mail and/or AB, do I need to move the data files for those first so that they are not wiped out? What about upgrades for those once we install or is the install disk and the current version the same.
Normally it's not a problem, but Archive/Compress/backup just the same.
Wait on the upgrades until we straighten this out.
Or do we do a new install on a partition on another disk? Then migrate files over if the works (mail, AB, itunes, photos...)? Might need to guide me a bit on this?
Excellent Idea if you hace another botable Disk, Install to that one, on first boot it'll ask if you want to Migrate, Migrate everything!
If you want to go that way and need assistance, just ask.

• Safari, mail and app store crash after 10.9.5 update

Good morning.
I updated to 10.9.5 a couple weeks ago and now when I open Mail or Safari, they crash.  I reopen them and they crash again.  Same story every time.
When I open the app store, it just sits there.  It tells me that I have 1 update but its frozen and will not allow me to navigate through it.
I have been able to open iPhoto without problems.

• Ical and other applications crash/freeze after upgrade to tiger

I upgraded to Tiger over a year ago, and this problem has persisted since then. I haven't had time to fix it, but I really miss ical and the other programs that crash.
This is whats going on:
my ical, mail, ichat and address book freeze upon opening, or open and then crash. None of these programs work. I have tried all of the trouble shooting articles on the website. I have reinstalled tiger (twice) using archive + install.
I have also created a new user account, and i did not experience the problems on that account. So, i know it is my user account. However, I don't know what that means, and I don't know what i can do.
Any and all assistance is greatly appreciated. I can try to post the crash reports (if someone would find them helpful and can tell me how to find them..)
thanks again for any help, I really appreciate it.
Kate

See this other discussion which uses a different phrase / set of keywords ("iCal hangs"):

(I've been learning that the phrase you use in searching is critical in getting to the issue you are researching—and you can not use a Boolean AND or OR in these searches, so finding out common phrases to use can be a big help.)
