Mail and safari has some sort of virus, doesnot let me fetch my mails

hi all,
i am on a mac os 10.4.11
where i use mac "mail" for all my emails.
Mail is configured to my gmail account.
but recently whenever i try to download emails to my laptop the get the following message :
There may be a problem with the mail server or network. Check the settings for account "IMAP Account" or try again.
The server error encountered was: Mail was unable to verify the identity of this server, which has a certificate issued to "*.hostgator.com". The error was:
An SSL error occurred while trying to read data from the server "imap.gmail.com". Verify that this server supports SSL and that your account settings are correct.
You might be connecting to a computer that is pretending to be "imap.gmail.com", and putting your confidential information at risk. Would you like to continue anyway?
i hav tried pop.gmail.com too as a matter of fact i hav even formated my mac thinking that its a virus.
i hav also tried deleting the com.apple.mail.plist, but its still the same, i also face a similar sort of problem where my safari gets stuck to the following page and does not allow me to surf,
**ERROR 404 - PAGE NOT FOUND**

Hi udyan, and a warm welcome to the forums!
There is a hosting service called hostgator.com, if you are getting that then I suspect you picked up a Trojan.

You may have installed the "DownLite" trojan, perhaps under a different name. Remove it as follows.
Malware is constantly changing to get around the defenses against it. The instructions in this comment are valid as of now, as far as I know. They won't necessarily be valid in the future. Anyone finding this comment a few days or more after it was posted should look for more recent discussions or start a new one.
    Back up all data.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/LaunchAgents/com.vsearch.agent.plist
Right-click or control-click the line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item named "VSearch" selected. Drag the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password.
Repeat with each of these lines:
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vsearch.daemon.plist
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vsearch.helper.plist
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/Jack.plist
Restart the computer and empty the Trash. Then delete the following items in the same way:
    /Library/Application Support/VSearch
    /Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/Jack
    /System/Library/Frameworks/VSearch.framework
Some of these items may be absent, in which case you'll get a message that the file can't be found. Skip that item and go on to the next one.
From the Safari menu bar, select
              Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions
Uninstall any extensions you don't know you need, including any that have the word "Spigot" or "Conduit" in the description. If in doubt, uninstall all extensions. Do the equivalent for the Firefox and Chrome browsers, if you use either of those.
This trojan is distributed on illegal websites that traffic in pirated movies. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect much worse to happen in the future.
You may be wondering why you didn't get a warning from Gatekeeper about installing software from an unknown developer, as you should have. The reason is that the DownLite developer has a codesigning certificate issued by Apple, which causes Gatekeeper to give the installer a pass. Apple could revoke the certificate, but as of this writing, has not done so, even though it's aware of the problem. This failure of oversight is inexcusable and has compromised both Gatekeeper and the Developer ID program. You can't rely on Gatekeeper alone to protect you from harmful software.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • My iphone 4  screen went black (has only apple logo) and it has some sort of codes on the top of screen. It won't turn off or on. what is going on?

I tried to turn it off and on but it won;t even do that...the screen is displaying several lines of some type of codes...
    what is going on?

Try a reboot by holding both the power and home buttons until the apple logo appears, ignore the red slider if that appears.
If that does not work, take it to an Apple store genius bar for evaluation.

  • TS3276 I have recently had a problem with one of my hotmail accounts, some sort of virus sending random emails to people in my address book. Hotmail advised me to change my password for that account, which I did. Why won't mail recognise the new password?

I have recently had a problem with one of my hotmail accounts, some sort of virus sending random emails from my address book. Hotmail advised me to delete all contacts and change the password for that account, which I did on my laptop running windows XP. The change was successful and I was able to send and receive emails with no problem. I then had to change the account password on my iPhone 4s, which I did and it too was successful but when I came to change the password on my iMac, running the latest version of Lion it would not recognise the new password. I have tried to remove the account details and re-install but every time I go to add new account my old details are in the box. This is very frustrating as I use my iMac for all my profects and I need to access my email. Please help.

    hi guys,
I had already deleted all reference to the hotmail account in question from the keychain access app, I have also tried to delete and re-instal the account details from within mail. The icon in the side bar dissapears but when I go to Add Account, the old account details are in the new account box. I then input my new password but am told that the server does not recognise it. If I access hotmail via google on the iMac I can get into my account with no problems. I am thinking there must be some other form of security system within the mac software that is blocking the new password. This is driving me nuts. I have been trying to resolve this for the last two days. Thank you for your advise anyway.

  • I recently opened an email with some sort of virus and now I cannot forward, reply, send emails or view you tubes only with firefox. Can you help?

I recently viewed an email and received some sort of virus. Only in the email address where I view in infected email and only when using Firefox do I have a problem. When using the email address I can no longer send emails, reply to emails or forward emails. I can no longer view You Tubes when using FirefoxI. I can send emails, reply, and forward emails and view You Tubes when using internet explorer. I do not have this problem when using another computer. I only have the problem described when using Firefox with the computer which was infected. I prefer Firefox so can you please guide me in a direction to address the problem.

thx for your response. are saying websites such as hotmail and yahoo mail detect that they are being accessed via firefox and turn off the JavaScript that makes hot links? really? additionally, i have friends with firefox in which hyperlinks stay active when they are copied and pasted.
was the "Make Link" add-on you posted supposed to fix the problem? i downloaded it, but i don't know where the "context menu" is that is supposed to help me. how to i view this context window now that i have downloaded the add-on?

This could well be the notorious Mac Defender - which is an annoying program that tricks you into thinking that your Mac is infected with a virus, when the only infection is Mac Defender itself.
When surfing the web never EVER click on a link that says "Free anti-virus scan" or "Scan now" - they are nearly always scams which will end up infecting your computer.  Although Macs are resistant to viruses, they're not resistant to user stupidity.
If you Google "Mac defender" then you'll find plenty of sites with instructions on how to remove this minor nuisance.  Take this as a warning that you need to be more careful in your surfing habits.

It may not be a good soloution for a novice, but I have been using hosts files to block unwanted URLs for many years with zero disasters and lots of positive results.
As I noted, whenever I find a new "bad" site, I simply add the name to my hosts file. It takes a few seconds and then it's gone forever. I find no difficulty whatsoever.
No, it's not for everyone, which is why I gave no specific details; but for those who are interested and have the desire to learn about these hosts files, it is a very good way to avoid "bad" websites.
I also enjoy the "clean" view of a webpage when there are no ads showing at all. The page loads faster and  the distractions are gone.
I never realized how much junk I am supressing until I got my iPad and saw all those horrid ads that are blocked on my other computers.
Here is a typical result of properly using a hosts file:

In fact, I am runing some plug-ins:  ClickToPlugin (Flash blocker), Collusion and Disconnect.
There is quite a history of new versions of Safari breaking third-party plug-ins/extensions becasue the plug developer did not have an updated version available by the time the new Safari version dropped. What you report--worked fne before but won't now--is exactly what history says happens in such a case.
First, turn off all third-party stuff and see if Safari smooths out. Alternatively, create a new user account and, from there, test Safari in its native state with nothing added. That is a good diagnostic to see if the issue is a plug or extension.
If either of those helps, check for updates to the add-ons. If the developer is slow in reacting to the updated Safari version, (not unheard of), stop using that extension until an update is available.

  • I can't send emails and Safari has issues

I am unable to send emails from one of my mail accounts. This occurs every so often. I have tried what Mail Help suggests, however, it is not successful. I have tried taking all accounts online and I have changed the port numbers in advanced settings. What else should I try?
On another note, my Safari has problems. Whenever I want to download something (including the new Flash player or Google Chrome), Safari will begin the download and then will crash. What can I do to resolve these problems? Thanks!

Try these steps and see if they help.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
If that doesn't help, close all aps and then try settings, contacts and mail again.
To close all apps - Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Quit/close open apps by double tapping the home button and the task bar will appear with all of you recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus (-) sign in the upper left corner to close the apps. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.

  • Is there an app that allows me to scan a document and read a bar code that has some sort of action defined

I would like to be able to scan a document that has a barcode or QR code on it.  I want the barcode to tell the app what to do with the document: store it in a specific folder, put a date/time stamp (jpg) on the document, etc.  I have found some MS based apps but nothing for my mac.  Any ideas would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

    I did find this:

  • Safari has been infected by virus

Hello.  Earlier today while searching for a deleted email, I accidentally opened a different message in my junk folder.  Immediately, Safari was compromised.  A dialogue box showed up with the address www.webuniversally.com in it.  I am told that "Microsoft Windows detected a virus attack on my computer" and I'm told to "contact customer support" at a "toll free" number" I'm given.  I actually called the number and immediately felt it was not legit and hung up.  Now when I click on Safari, the same process keeps happening.  I cannot get online at all, and other functions (such as Reset Safari) are disabled.  I've tried shutting down and restarting, and I've used Time Machine to restore the system to a time before I opened the email, but I'm stuck and do not know how to proceed.  Can I remove this virus somehow?  My system is OS X 10.7.5.

If you require anti-virus protection Thomas Reed recommends using ClamXAV. (Thank you to Thomas Reed for this recommendation.)
From user Joe Bailey comes this equally useful advice:
    The facts are:
    1. There is no anti-malware software that can detect 100% of the malware out there.
    2. There is no anti-malware that can detect anything targeting the Mac because there
is no Mac malware in the wild, and therefore, no "signatures" to detect.
    3. The very best way to prevent the most attacks is for you as the user to be aware that
the most successful malware attacks rely on very sophisticated social engineering
techniques preying on human avarice, ****, and fear.
    4. Internet popups saying the FBI, NSA, Microsoft, your ISP has detected malware on
your computer is intended to entice you to install their malware thinking it is a
        protection against malware.
    5. Some of the anti-malware products on the market are worse than the malware
from which they purport to protect you.
    6. Be cautious where you go on the internet.
    7. Only download anything from sites you know are safe.
    8. Avoid links you receive in email, always be suspicious even if you get something
you think is from a friend, but you were not expecting.
    9. If there is any question in your mind, then assume it is malware.
