Mail and safari not responding
Mail is not updating and both mail and safari show blank screen when touched. There is a general delay in 4s response to commands, phone is 2 weeks new, any help greatly appreciated
The errors that you found in Disk Utility may have led to your OS becoming corrupted. You may eventually need to reinstall the OS using an Archive and Install, but you do want to make a good backup before attempting this.
You might want to run the extended version of the Apple Hardware Test and see if you get anything in the form of an error code. If you do, then you have a hardware problem which Apple will need to fix under warranty.
If the AHT shows no problems, you might want to try running SMART Utility:
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/systemdiskutilities/smartutility.html
It is somewhat more critical than Disk Utility and may detect impending hard drive failure sooner than Disk Utility will. If your drive is actually failing, then it needs to be replaced. If your drive has started to fail, it could easily have developed the errors that Disk Utility repaired and caused software corruption. Remember that Disk Utility only repairs the drive's complex software--it cannot repair it physically.
You could also try creating a new user account to see if the problem is widespread or just in your main account.
If SMART Utility shows no problems, then the next step would be to try reinstalling the OS using the Archive and Install option.
Good luck!

Apple Mail and Safari not working, other browers fine
Apple Mail suddenly won't download mail, it spins and spins, but gets no mail. It also won't quit, I had to force quit several times. And Safari has become sluggish, can't even load a page. I tried reset, it made Safari work to load one page, but since then won't load any more. At the same times, Opera. Chrome and Firefox work great, very fast.
And ideas????Regarding Mail, does the spinning beach ball start when you click on specific messages? Spam messages, perhaps? If "yes," you need to create a rule that deletes these messages. You want to select a characteristic that is sufficiently broad to catch the offending sender every time BUT is also sufficiently narrow so that legitimate mail is not deleted.
One example that I found is sender includes:
.info
That catches most of the messages that were causing my wife problems and we certainly don't know anyone named John.Info. Of course, if we ever do get a friend with that name, we've got a problem. -
Mail and safari not working properly
So i had not used my laptop in about a week because of an issue with safari that was driving me crazy. When i get to https sites (totally random) have a box to enter something like a cc number or address as i start to type safari gives me the busy wheel for infinity...let it sit for hours one day, never stopped. had to force quit. relaunched, same thing on the same box. cleared history and cache, rebooted and tried again..same thing.
happened on multiple websites on random boxes where i needed to enter some info, was always on a https site though.
Second issue, went to use my computer again, launched mail. none of my accounts are syncing. iCloud, exchange, gmail..all show most up to date from the last time i used it over a week ago. let it sit for hours, still no sync. got it to update by taking all accounts offline then back online. went to send a test message. hit the send button and mail locked up completely!!Date/Time: 2014-08-23 12:03:42 -0400

Spell check in Mail and Safari not working
Since I've upgraded to 10.5.1 spell check no longer works in mail. It does not underline any incorrect spellings. Also in Safari 3.0.4, when I fill out forms and make a misspelling, spellcheck will underline the word but when I right click on it I do not get the contextural menu to correct it. The misspelled work just highlights and then the red undeline disappears leaving the incorrect spelling intact. How can I get spell check working correctly?
Thanks,
PatThis is a fairly old thread. Did the OP's (Patrick) problem go away? Was there a solution?
If you control-click in a new message, is Spelling and Grammar in the pop-up context? Can you select it? If you do, does it find misspelt words? If you deliberately misspell a word, put the insertion point in the middle of it and then control-click, does the pop-up offer a list of alternatives?

Mail and Safari not storing Microsoft Outlook certificates properly
I have a user on Mavericks who has a persistent problem with messages in her Microsoft 365 hosted spam filter. The email message sent contains a link to release the impounded item. When these links are clicked it works fine, but only for a few days. The link is opened in Safari and the message is released and the server displays a simple webpage to confirm this has happened. After a few days, however, Safari starts complaining about a certificate needing to be trusted, and it then goes into an infinite loop and the message is never released. This can be cured by finding, in Keychain, the certificate/certificates mentioned and deleting them. But this only works for a week or so.
I've run a keychain repair and a repair permissions, but the problem comes back after 7-14 days.
I've not seen this anywhere else, just on her account. Has anyone got any ideas?
Things I could try:
Set up a new user account and new email under that account. But this is a work environment and I don't think she wants that inconvenience.I have a user on Mavericks who has a persistent problem with messages in her Microsoft 365 hosted spam filter. My IPAD 2 is freezing on the principal internet access page. It comes up through a light grey filter and does not respond to any touch or keys. All other internet dependent functions seem to be working fine (mail, various APPs). How do I "unfreeze"?
thanks
geoff1949Geoff-
Go to Settings-Safari and Clear History and Clear Cookies and Data.
Another thing you can try is to double-click the Home button. A row of recent Apps will line up along the bottom of the screen. Scroll across and find the Safari icon. Press on it for a couple of seconds until it starts to wiggle. A red minus sign will appear on each icon. Press on Safari's minus sign to remove it. This may clear its memory of the bad Google page.
If this does not help, try resetting (rebooting) the iPad. Hold both the Home and Sleep buttons for several seconds until the Apple logo appears. Ignore the "Slide to power off" arrow. The iPad will restart after a couple of minutes. Resetting this way will not hurt anything, and sometimes clears up mysterious problems.

Mail application does not respond even after forcing quit over and over
My mail application is not responding. I have forced quit at least 5 times and I still get the beach ball. This just started happening 2 days ago and now I can't access my mail at all.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. -
Safari and 10.6.2 upgrade. Mail and Safari will not open.
I upgraded to 10.6.2 and Safari. Now I cannot open my Mail or Safari. I get a message that says it Unexpectedly Quit. I see in the details it says unable to gather system configuration information. Does anybody have an idea how to fix this?
HI,
Try deleting this file.
com.apple.launchservices.plist
~/Library/Preferences.
Move that file to the Trash, restart your Mac and try to launc Mail and Safari. If that doesn't help...
Download and install the Mac OS X v10.6.2 Update (Combo)
It's ok to do this even though you are running 10.6.2. Make sure and repair disk permissions after the installation.
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

Slow opening of mail and safari!
Mail and Safari take a very long time - one.2 minutes to open on my imac with 10.3.
Safari keeps bouncing in the dock. Then, after 20 bounce, it stops. The black triangle under the icon isn't displayed. After 20 seconds safari opens!!!
mail: bounce just 4-5 times, then stops bouncing, the triangle is displayed, but no windows is opened. If i right click on the icon, the windows says "application not responding".
After a minute the window opens.
WHY?

Mail and Safari stopped working/opening at all
Hello,
Mail and Safari won't open. The little black arrow appears under them in the dock, but nothing... The little pop-up menu that appears when I click and hold on the icons in the dock says "Application not responding" and offers me the option to force quit. I have checked my users folder and apparently the mailboxes are there, but I cannot open the program. I have always had several mailboxes and kept messages separate and under categories to avoid too many messages in one mailbox.
I tried to repair permissions and I even safe-booted, but no help at all. I noticed in another posting...
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5884802#5884802
that someone else is having a similar problem. Could it have been from a security update which I did recently?
Please help!!!
Thank you in advance
RobHi Rob
You could try reinstalling the update again, this time with all applications closed and not using your computer at all while the installation proceeds, especially during the optimization phase part of the process.
If you chose 'Install and keep package' from the Software Update you will find it in
HD/Library/Packages
If you did not keep the package you will need to download it again.
As you are not on the net, (unless you have Firefox which works) download the package, move it to HD/Library/Packages and double click on it to reinstall it.
Security Update 2007-008 (10.3.9 Client)
With a bit of luck doing this might rectify your network connections.

Mail and Safari still freeze all the time-help
Even with the latest Mavericks updates, Apple mail and Safari freeze contstantly to the point that I can't send email or use Safari. I had after the initial mavericks release gotten mail to function by shutting off 2 Gmail accounts I had on my MacPro. After the update that supposedly fixed the Gmail issues, I turned on my Gmail accounts and Mail started freezing almost immediately on startup. Was able to get in and shut the accounts don again, but Mail keeps freezing. I even removed the Gmail accounts from Mail prefs, but that didn't help either. I can usually get Mail to launch and for the most part can read email, but if I try to respond, once i type and email and try to send, Mail freezes and I have to force quit. Once Mail hangs Safari hangs shortly thereafter or if it's not even launched I can't launch.
I have been using macs for a long time and have never had such a bad time with an upgrade. Have tried most of the solutions posted, and am baffled as to how to make things work.
Any suggestions welcome.here's your report with some comments in red:

With router linked, mail and safari opens slow!
WHEN MY IMAC HAVE MY ROUTER d-LINK G604T CONNECTED, Mail and Safari take a very long time - one.2 minutes to open on my imac with 10.3.
This DON'T HAPPEN if the router is not connected to the mac.
WHY?
please help
bye
micI know it's very late to reply but I have had the same problem recently and the solution for me was to enter the DNS servers in the Network Preferences. It solved my problem immediately.
G4 Dual Mac OS X (10.3.9) -
Apps like Mail and Safari Freeze initially
So I have Mac Os X Lion. I love it all around. There is just one annoying problem. When I turn my computer on, and Mail starts up, I cannot "click" on anything. The cursor moves, I can move to and click on things in other applications, but Mail and Safari often will not allow me to click. Let me be clearer. Mail is open, new messages download, the App seems to be running fine. But if I want to open a new message, no amount of clicking will open the message. Similarly, when I go to Safari, a page may load but then I cannot click on any links on the page. If I just press Command Q and reopen the program, everything is fine. But it is slightly annoying to have to do this. Any suggestions?
Hi David
I have exactly the same issue with Mail but not Safari on my MacBook Air with Lion. I can't even use Command Q, I have to Force Quit to get Mail responding again.
I have a support call booked for Thursday night so I'll hit you up again with what they tell me.
Regards

Not until I moved to 10.5.2 have I had so many crashes and lock ups. It's as if I'm working on a PC. The problem seems to be when I'm working in mail and Safari. I know there is no solution to this problem but I thought I should post my frustration. I've switched my browser to FireFox and will see if that helps. I will also try and find a different mail client other than Mail.
Hi, Patrick.
1. You wrote: "I've long had a problem with my computer going to sleep via Energy Saver automatically - it doesn't, the screen goes dark but the hard drive continues to run. So whenever I do want the computer to go to sleep, I have to do it manually."I presume the slider for Computer sleep is not set to Never?
Check these Console logs for clues. Look for large blocks of rapidly-repeating messages being written to the logs cited in that link. This indicates a process is logging excessively, preventing sleep. Known causes of this include software distributed with Canon scanners and HP All-In-One Printer-Fax-Copier devices.
If you find large blocks of rapidly-repeating messages, post a small sample for analysis.
2. You wrote: "Shortly after upgrading to 10.4.5, every time I woke my machine from sleep the application Mail would crash, and I'd get the Report to Apple dialog box. I upgraded to 10.4.6, and now it happens with Safari and Mail - every time. Any suggestions?"Tow thoughts here:1. As a general check, run the procedure specified in my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ. Perform the steps therein in the order specified.
2. See my "Multiple applications quit unexpectedly or fail to launch" FAQ for advice on troubleshooting this issue.Good luck!
