Mail and Safari stopped working/opening at all
Hello,
Mail and Safari won't open. The little black arrow appears under them in the dock, but nothing... The little pop-up menu that appears when I click and hold on the icons in the dock says "Application not responding" and offers me the option to force quit. I have checked my users folder and apparently the mailboxes are there, but I cannot open the program. I have always had several mailboxes and kept messages separate and under categories to avoid too many messages in one mailbox.
I tried to repair permissions and I even safe-booted, but no help at all. I noticed in another posting...
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5884802#5884802
that someone else is having a similar problem. Could it have been from a security update which I did recently?
Please help!!!
Thank you in advance
Rob
Hi Rob
You could try reinstalling the update again, this time with all applications closed and not using your computer at all while the installation proceeds, especially during the optimization phase part of the process.
If you chose 'Install and keep package' from the Software Update you will find it in
HD/Library/Packages
If you did not keep the package you will need to download it again.
As you are not on the net, (unless you have Firefox which works) download the package, move it to HD/Library/Packages and double click on it to reinstall it.
Security Update 2007-008 (10.3.9 Client)
With a bit of luck doing this might rectify your network connections.

I just bought a new MacBook Air after my old one suffered a drink being spilled on it and died. I used migration assistant to back up from my time capsule but now it won't open Mail or Safari and iTunes can't find all my music. Any ideas how to fix this? I have downloaded software updates.
Thanks for that advice however now I have a duplicate of all my documents on my hard drive but the Mail and Safari will not open. I have been able to open iTunes. I have tried to download software updates for Mail and Safari and this tells me that the download was unsuccessful ( after taking some time to download). Can I reinstall the system? Would that help?

Mail (and Safari) won't open after Security Update 2007-004
I have a PowerBook G4 running 10.3.9. The machine was running fine (I was checking mail, browsing the web) when my weekly scheduled update opened. Per it's suggestion, I installed Security Update 2007-004.
Upon restart, both Mail and Safari will NOT open. The icon for each on the dock simply "bounces" once when clicked then nothing else. Has anyone else experienced anything similar? Any thoughts on a fix?Installing a system update while you continue using the computer as if nothing was going on there is a really bad idea.
Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all the filesystem issues, if any, reinstall the Security Update, which may not have been installed properly. It may also be necessary to reinstall the Combo Update for the type of computer and the version of Mac OS X you’re using, unless this is the version of Mac OS X that came with the computer:
Mac OS X 10.3.9 Combo Update
Take a look at the following articles for guidelines on how to properly install system updates:
Troubleshooting installation and software updates
Installing software updates
Basically, you should verify/repair the startup disk before installing the update, no applications should be running while installing it, and you may experience unexpected results if you have third-party system software modifications (not normal applications) installed. -
Safari and 10.6.2 upgrade. Mail and Safari will not open.
I upgraded to 10.6.2 and Safari. Now I cannot open my Mail or Safari. I get a message that says it Unexpectedly Quit. I see in the details it says unable to gather system configuration information. Does anybody have an idea how to fix this?
HI,
Try deleting this file.
com.apple.launchservices.plist
~/Library/Preferences.
Move that file to the Trash, restart your Mac and try to launc Mail and Safari. If that doesn't help...
Download and install the Mac OS X v10.6.2 Update (Combo)
It's ok to do this even though you are running 10.6.2. Make sure and repair disk permissions after the installation.
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

Mail and Safari will not open after 10.4.6 update(s)
Client's Ibook was running Jaguar 10.2.8, and Mail was locking up as it was overstuffed. Upgraded to 10.4.3 to fix the problem, and it did, in fact, fix it.
Was then prompted to install all available updates, which I thought I would do as a courtesy before returning the system to the client.
Now, after the updates, neither Mail nor Safari opens. I get no spinning beach ball...just no response. Other programs, including IE, MS Office programs, and System Preferences are working fine. Starting in Safe Boot makes no difference.
Kind of at a loss and all help is appreciated...thanks in advance!OK. Do this:
1. Open /Applications/Utilities/Console.
2. In the File menu, choose either Open Console Log, or Open System Log, or both, so that the Console application displays the contents of both system.log and console.log.
3. In the Finder, go to the /Applications folder, and try to open Mail and/or Safari by double-clicking on them.
4. Look at the bottom of the Console windows for messages that could have been written there as a result of the failed launch. These may provide useful information to properly identify the problem.

Mail and Notes stopped working on my Macbook after 10.8.5 upgrade iOS7 upgrade
Hello
I recently upgraded my system to 10.8.5.
I also recently upgraded my 2 iphones to iOS7.
Then i found out my Notes were not syncing on my macbook pro, but the sync works fine on both iphones and when i check the iCloud website, they are also updated.
Then mail also stopped working and after reading some posts on this forum, i understand that mail and notes are somehow connected (both using IMAP?)..
I can't configure my iCloud email account on the mail app, i get a "iCloud IMAP « p03-imap.mail.me.com » not responding" answer, whatever i do. I tried deleting the account, deleting all entries linked to the mail app in the keychain, changing my iCloud password to match new apple password requirements.... nothing works.
And all my other email accounts don't work anymore either. Mail just won't connect with any Imap or Pop server.
My internet works fine, I can access all those emails account via webmail interfaces.
Again, my iCloud works fine on all other iOS7 devices.
What's the problem??
Thanks
jkMail.
Hold down the option key and go to Finder/Go, then select your User Library. Select Containers/com.apple.mail. Move the folder com.apple.mail to your desktop. You must move the entire folder, not just the contents.
Re-launch Mail and test. If the problem is solved, recreate any required Mail settings and import any emails you want to save from the folder on the desktop. You can then put the folder in the Trash. If the problem remains, return the folder to where you got it replacing the one that is there.

Hello,
I'm having problems with Safari and Apple Mail;
Mail does not load at all, and Safari partially loads then gets stuck.
Disk Utility also will not select the hard drive... It just beach balls.
I have found that if I erase HD/Library/Caches and restart there is no problem at all.
However when I shut down and restart again the problems are all back again.
I have tried erasing preferences and caches, resetting etc with no good results.
I run OS 10.3.9 on a g4 tower (mirrored drive doors) and have all software updates. (Also I run flip4mac)
Thanks in advanceHi
Welcome to Apple Discussions
It seems there may be hard drive directory corruption at play.
Run the "repair disk" function in Disk Utility. Insert your Panther Installer DVD disk. After it loads, restart the system, holding down the C key when the screen turns dark. Once the grey Apple screen appears you can let go of the C key.
When the DVD is fully loaded, select Disk Utility in the Installation Menu. A window will open showing your HD on the left. Single click on your HD, then select "repair disk" in the lower right of the screen. If errors appear during the "repair", rerun the utility until you get a clean pass. Then quit the Utility and Installer, letting the computer restart. Let me know if errors appear (also if they were repaired).
After the restart, go to your Applications>Utilities folder via the Finder and again select "Disk Utility". This time, rather than repairing disk, select "repair permissions".
Finally, again trash the Caches folder and restart the computer.
Try Safari and Mail.

Mail and addressbook stopped working
My computer locked up and I had to turn it off manually. When I started it back up I clicked mail and it went to the Welcome to Mail in Tiger window instwad of opening my mai. I clicked continue and it goes to Importing and never imports anything. Also when I click on ichat, it walks me through the setup instead of just logging on, but it works. If I close it and open it it goes through the setup again. I click addressbook and it acts like it is going to open and fails. I have no idea why these programs are doing this. I have rebooted the computer and nothing changes. I was using a pop account for gmail. HELP!
There might be alot more users that are able to help you if you post this in the iMac section, this is a forum for the iPhone

Apple Mail and Safari not working, other browers fine
Apple Mail suddenly won't download mail, it spins and spins, but gets no mail. It also won't quit, I had to force quit several times. And Safari has become sluggish, can't even load a page. I tried reset, it made Safari work to load one page, but since then won't load any more. At the same times, Opera. Chrome and Firefox work great, very fast.
And ideas????Regarding Mail, does the spinning beach ball start when you click on specific messages? Spam messages, perhaps? If "yes," you need to create a rule that deletes these messages. You want to select a characteristic that is sufficiently broad to catch the offending sender every time BUT is also sufficiently narrow so that legitimate mail is not deleted.
One example that I found is sender includes:
.info
That catches most of the messages that were causing my wife problems and we certainly don't know anyone named John.Info. Of course, if we ever do get a friend with that name, we've got a problem. -
I have recently bought a new imac. Imported all my files etc. from my G5 using Timemachine.
Iphoto requires updating but wont!
itunes wont open up properly the text is wrong!!
I keep getting a connection failure message when trying to visit the App store.
Safari and Mail are working fine.
My Apple Id is also fine as it works with my ipad.
Any suggestions?Hello Ben, see if this might be it...

Post subject: NSURLErrorDomain error -1100 in OS X 10.8
If you check for software updates using the App Store in OS X 10.8 and get "NSURLErrorDomain error -1100" the problem may be with your Software Update preferences. This is particularly likely if you were using a custom Apple Software Update server. To solve the problem, quit the App Store, move the following two files (if present) to the trash, restart, and only then rerun App Store updates:
/Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist
/Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist.lockfile

Mail and safari not working properly
So i had not used my laptop in about a week because of an issue with safari that was driving me crazy. When i get to https sites (totally random) have a box to enter something like a cc number or address as i start to type safari gives me the busy wheel for infinity...let it sit for hours one day, never stopped. had to force quit. relaunched, same thing on the same box. cleared history and cache, rebooted and tried again..same thing.
happened on multiple websites on random boxes where i needed to enter some info, was always on a https site though.
Second issue, went to use my computer again, launched mail. none of my accounts are syncing. iCloud, exchange, gmail..all show most up to date from the last time i used it over a week ago. let it sit for hours, still no sync. got it to update by taking all accounts offline then back online. went to send a test message. hit the send button and mail locked up completely!!Date/Time: 2014-08-23 12:03:42 -0400

I keep getting adobe flash errors and safari stops working, any suggestions?
I am nothing that when any website has adobe flash in it, I get the spinning wheel and have to shut down Safari. I have seen three Adobe Error messages in the last day and a half. Any suggestions?
From the Safari menu bar, select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Privacy ▹ Remove All Website Data...
and confirm. Close the window. Then select
▹ System Preferences… ▹ Flash Player ▹ Advanced ▹ Delete All...
In the sheet that opens, check the box marked
Delete All Site Data and Settings
then click Delete Data. Close the preference pane. -
Spell check in Mail and Safari not working
Since I've upgraded to 10.5.1 spell check no longer works in mail. It does not underline any incorrect spellings. Also in Safari 3.0.4, when I fill out forms and make a misspelling, spellcheck will underline the word but when I right click on it I do not get the contextural menu to correct it. The misspelled work just highlights and then the red undeline disappears leaving the incorrect spelling intact. How can I get spell check working correctly?
Thanks,
PatThis is a fairly old thread. Did the OP's (Patrick) problem go away? Was there a solution?
If you control-click in a new message, is Spelling and Grammar in the pop-up context? Can you select it? If you do, does it find misspelt words? If you deliberately misspell a word, put the insertion point in the middle of it and then control-click, does the pop-up offer a list of alternatives?

Mail and Safari crash when opening
Hi, I've run Disk Utility a bunch, but now I can't open these programs. Anyone have some basic suggestions for this?
Mac G5 2.0 Dual Ghz / 2.5 Gb Ram
Also, perhaps related, I can't download the combined update to 10.4.8 from either software update or the Apple site. I'm getting an error message....
Thanks! The 10.4.8 combo updater will update any previous version of 10.4 to 10.4.8
You could update 10.3.4 to 10.3.9 with the combo updater here
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosxcombinedupdate1039.html
If you wish to install 10.4 it's here or here.
You should then be able to use the combo updater to 10.4.8 -
Mail app and Safari dont work after updating to 10.6.8
Hello there,
i've got a serious problem, mail 4.6 isn't sending mails and safari doesn't open (it shoes an alert about a crash).
Things I did befor all that happened:
1- I organized my Programms inside de application folder. I moved some programmes inside a folder inside de applications folder. I guess this may cause some trouble when updating the system.
2- I made the automatic software uptade from my computer. (combo 10.6.8, followed by the security update).
3- After that I realised that mail hadnt upgraded. It wa still mail 4.5. So I moved all the programs back where they where before (I took them out of the sub-folders) and reinstaled only mail 4.6 from the internet. I did the same with Safari.
4- After this mess I saw that mail 4.6 was full of problems. First the sent mails where all crazy, with different addresses... And after a while it didnt even worked anymore to send emails.
5- So I reinstaled all the 10.6.8 and the security again. The first time I tried the computer crashed. Then I tried again. Now it got even worse. Safari shows a problem (report) and Mail 4.6 continues not sending mails just receiving them.
6- I dont know what to do??
What is happening?
Thank you!Sorry guys for worthless topic, found bunch of same! So, I will try to down combo update and try than, should be fine they said.
