Mail & AOL ... can't send

Evening ...
I've been set up to send and receive mail on my AOL account via MAIL for months now without any issue. As of last, however I can no longer send mail. The server still delivers mail with no trouble but when I go to send I get ... "Cannot send message using the server ..."
The really weird part is that I had sent about 90 emails prior to that. I deleted all the info in my Preferences and reconfigured the account and nothing.
Any ideas?

Hello, and welcome to the Discussions.
There are limits with many such providers on the number of messages you can send in some period of time, etc. It does not sound like you would have hit that, but the behavior sounds suspiciously like you have. See:
http://www.emailaddressmanager.com/tips/email-address-limit.html
Try to contact AOL and check this.

Problem: Cannot send mail unless Password is transmitted insecurely & Port is set to 587.. Can receive mail but can't send Code 501..
Need help with T-bird.. My OS is Win XP-64..Have been using Mozilla for about 10 years with little or no problems.. This happened when I upgraded to 3.17.. Spent hours on T-Bird diagnostics web site.. Called Comcast & talked to a net tech.. he ran some tests on his end & had me log into my Comcast e-mail account & all worked well,, so he concluded the problem was in T-Bird.. He had me change my port to 587 & disable connection security & authentication to none & I was able to send mail.. That was all he could do.. Comcast was working.. the problem is in T-Bird.. Can any one help with this problem.. I don't want to send mail with my password transmitted insecurely..
    Thanks

It was not intended to be "snide". You said two separate things that at face value would be out of the ordinary.
I considered if it might be a typo for 31.7. Since 31.5 is the current formal release, I would have to thank you for volunteering to test a pre-release beta version. If it was truly 3.1.7 then it would appear that you have chosen, or have become stuck with a somewhat ancient version. In either case it's harder to reach out to you with any meaningful comments or advice. However I do watch various other sites and newsgroups and I don't see a clamour of distressed users, so it seems fair to suppose that this feature isn't actually broken in 31.7.
And you said XP 64. XP is obsolete and no longer supported and if there is a 64-bit version, then again you have set yourself apart from the mainstream.
I had a look at the comcast site and found some puzzling recommendations. Some users come here asking how to set up a secured connection in Thunderbird when it isn't offered by the server. Comcast are different, in that they mention the ports 143 and 587, and also 993 and 465. So far so good, in that security is actually on offer, but they also suggest that you enable SSL, regardless of which port is being used. It would be unusual and unconventional to offer TLS or SSL on ports 143 and 587. STARTTLS would be more credible on these ports.
Have you tried IMAP on 993 and SMTP on 465? SMTP on 587 with SSL, or TLS, is not impossible, but is improbable.

    The receiving email ports are:
    IMAP is port 143
    IMAP-SSL is port 993
    POP is port 110
    POP-SSL is port 995
    Outgoing ports are...
SMTP and SMTP-SSL is on ports 25, 587 and 465. Port 587 has to be SSL, and port 465 is enforced TLS-wrapped and is generally used by Outlook users.

  • I had an imap account in my iPad and my iPhone 4. They worked just fine till about Christmas. They act like they are checking the mail and it shows there is mail to come in, but it just goes back to saying checking mail.  Can't send mail either.

    Update to above question:
    Hello All,
To anyone with the same problem described above, on THEIR iPad (if it is running iOS 7.0.2):
Go to Settings; Mail, Contacts, Calendars; DELETE your *******@btinternet.com e-mail account, that you originally set up either using 'Other', or the 'BT' option which I am sure was in the list previous to the iOS 7 update.
Then ADD a NEW account choosing YAHOO from the list of options. DO NOT USE 'OTHER'.
Enter the correct details just as you (almost certainly) had already done in your previous attempts using 'other'.
When you see the 'verifying......' and 'the blue ticks' you should be able to exit settings and open your mail app and then receive all your 'old' e-mails again, AND be able to SEND as well.
All my 'old' e-mails, were NOT found in the 'old e-mail' folder though. THEY are still in my inbox.
So this fix worked for me.
After I deleted my account from 'OTHER' and put it in Yahoo, I like other people also ended up with more folders.
I hope this works for you on YOUR Apple devices.

  • Receiving mail, but can't send mail with attachments?

    Hello,
I can't send mails anymore, I have been able to send some without any attachments (i.e. reply doesn't work as it automatically attaches the original text). This started 3 days ago. Also, my mail doesn't seem to recognize powerpoint and word docs., but I a know the people who have send me such files do not have VISTA. When I choose "open with" then it works. So I have 2 problems, one being moe urgent then the other.
    1) can't send mail with attachments
    2) .doc (word), .pps (powerpoint)attachments are not always recognized.
    thank you all!!!

Try going into Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > select the account > account name , tap on SMTP (under the 'Outgoing Mail Server' heading) and then tap on your Primary Server and try entering your email account and password and see if it then works

  • HELP! my mail account can't send emails since yesterday!!!

I haven't changed any settings, but all at sudden all my devices can't send mail.
    Web-based iCloud service works well.
    Any ideas?

Check your Outgoing server settings and make sure all the fields are entered even when it says Optional.
Note: your Username is the full e-mail address.
If you're not sure, check your e-mail provider website for the settings.

  • Can receive mail but can not send mail

With IMAP AT&T Account I can receive emails with no problem but can not send out emails.  AT&T says it is a Mac Mail issue because I can send and receive with no problem on the internet.
Can someone please help me with the settings that should be put into the Outgoing mail server SMTP settings.  It always shows the server as 'Offline'.
    Thanks

They (AT&T) needs to provide you with the proper Outgoing Mail Server setting.

    Hi,
Are you connected to a strong Wi-fi signal?  Try resetting your iPod:  Press/hold the home and sleep/wake buttons until the Apple logo appears.
    Hope this helps!

  • Some mail boxes can't send

    Hi
I was replying to an email that ended up in my google mailbox on the iPhone I have.
It said that the address was invalid, but its the same smtp and servers I have set up on my Mac's.
    What can be causing this?
    Any solutions?
The only ones that work are .mac and yahoo.
    Thanks in advance

Are you using Google's SMTP server or your own ISP's? If it is the latter, it is because many ISP's only allow SMTP connections from their own network. When you are on 3G, you are AT&T's network and then trying to connect to your ISP's SMTP server fails - they see it as an outside connection and assume it is a spammer trying to relay mail.
Searching on "sender address invalid" will give you lots of hits with lots of workarounds.... the easiest is to use a different SMTP server - the built-in one for AT&T (or whoever your carrier is) usually fixes the issue.

Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
Or this - Delete the account in Mail and then set it up again. Settings->Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> Accounts   Tap on the Account, then on the red button that says Remove Account.

  • Can receive POP mail, but can't send...what's the deal?

I am trying to set up my school account on my home computer and I followed the directions for the SMTP and POP mail addresses, entered them exactly...and yet, I can't send anything out from Mail using my school address.
What am I doing wrong? Any ideas?

    Hi:
Allan has provided some useful information above - specifically -some ISPs block smtp traffic destined to be routed through a foreign smtp server and not THEIR smtp server. As he said, in mail prefs > accounts > schoolAcc't, just use your ISP's smtp server for outgoing mail. The "from" line, as read by your recipients, will still have show your school email address in it, just as you spevcified it when you created that school mail account in Mail.app. The only place junk about the fact that you are actually using your ISP and not your school's smtp server will be in the message header junk that most people don't normally display anyways.
As far as trying an alternate port (587), I don't know about that -- it would seem to me if your school's IT Dept hasn't set up port 587 as a valid port for smtp services, then that would be like specifying port 8080 in your web browser -- typing "http:www.cnn.com:8080" for example -- it won't play.
At my local university, although they would let you login to their imap server (using SSL over port 993) to download mail, they, the university, would not let you send mail if it was originating from an IP address outside of their campus subnet. So all the directions that they gave on configuring your mail account only applied to setting up a computer on campus, not at home.
What I used to do, is, in Terminal.app, log in to the campus via secure shell, and specify some port forwarding options. Then, I modified that Mail (school)account server information to use those particular ports on 127.0.0.1 (localhost), that secure shell would then forward on to the campus network. It was kind of inconvenient, because you had to launch Terminal, login via secure shell, and then launch mail. The upside, however, was that everything between you and the campus mailserver was encrypted. So, can you log into your school's network using ssh?
The first approach above, as suggested by Allan, would be easiest, although if we're talking laptop and you go onto campus, you might have the same issue then because your ISP might not like mail originating from a "foreign" (school subnet) IP address. So, you'd have to be going into Mail's preferences and switching your smtp server depending on which network you were physically affiliated with -- your ISP at home or your campus LAN at school.
If you're interested in exploring the Terminal.app secure shell thing for your mail, post back, I can tell you how to set that stuff up. Depending on your skill level, it could be considered anywhere from easy to moderately difficult to do.

  • TS3276 Am on Business BT Broadband, can receive e-mails but can't send them - any advise?

Am on Business BT Broadband and am in the process of setting up my BT Connect e-mail address.  System allows me to receive e-mails but I can't send them - any suggestions on how to resolve this?

Your email service may be blocking access to send emails from a point outside their network. If your email service has a browser interface try connecting to it to send an email.

  • Have a ipod 4th gen can receive mail but can't send mail anybody have the same problem?

i have a 4th gen ipod touch, i can't send emails but i can receive them can anybody help fix this problem?

You have an error or omission in the entries for the outgoing server.  Somtimes it is easier to delete the account on the iPod and recreate it rather than trying to find the error.  If you give us you provider and type of account (POP3, IMAP, Exchange) we may be able to provide more detailed information.

Boy, I would think that should work.
Is the ZIP file too large per your ISP's file attachment rules? For example, my ISP has a 10MB limit on file attachments. I have to split into separate ZIP files anything that's at or over that limit.
