Mail app adds contact twice

When I start typing in a particular contact's name in Mail.app in Mavericks, Mail correctly auto-suggests the intended contact. In this case I started typing Anthony (see first screen shot). I confirm the suggestion by hitting the return key. On other contacts that simply fills in the contact's email address. On this particular contact, it fills in his name twice, sending him two copies of the email if I don't delete one of them (see second screen shot).
There aren't duplicate copies of this contact in the Contacts.app. He is being pulled in via Exchange server, so I can't delete the contact and attempt to enter him again. I don't have any groups set up.
Any thoughts on what could cause this?
Thanks,
bB

I seem to have the same issue as well c1natra
I have verified that I haven't entered in some "Text Shortcut" in the Keyboard system preferences that would be doing this as well.
Very curious.
Again, anyone have any suggestions?

I'm using a 16GB iPhone 4S, with the latest version of iOS 8.1.1. Whenever I go to the "Cellular" settings on the main settings page and turn OFF cellular data usage for native apps like mail, app store, contacts, photos etc , the moment I back out and come back in, all the native apps I turned cellular off for are back on again. Kindly help me

Exact same question as ankit1986, specifically with the photos while on cellular-only, and as simple as it sounds, I tried the hard reboot Ingo2711 suggested.  Still experiencing the same error with the native apps reverting to on.  It's killing our shared data-plan (2GB).

  • 22 seconds for Mail.app to contact SMTP

So, it takes 22 seconds from the push on ”send”, until Mail.app gets contact with the SMTP-server.
I've tried 4 different SMTP's, with and without authentication. If I send another mail immediately after one was sent (swoosh sound) – it will be sent without delay.
Same problem in GF's MacBook. There's however no delays from the iPhone or from Thunderbird with the same settings for SMTP.
I've tried the following with no success: New user account on computer, Repaired Disk Permissions, Repaired harddrive (Disk Utilities), Repaired Keychain.
    OS X 10.5.8, Mail 3.6

That the second message will go immediately is is a sure indication of the DNS issue present for many people in Leopard. Have you powered down your entire network -- computers, router, modem -- recently? That would be the first thing to try. See the following discussion about DNS:

  • How do I create groups in Mail and add contacts to that group?

How do I create groups in Mail and then add contacts to that group?

Look in Mail > Preferences > Composing tab > If you want all the email addresses to show, check "When sending to a group, show all member addresses".   If unchecked, just the groupname should appear.
If it still doesn't work then review the email addresses for each of the group members looking for errors in format.
Also, clean up the list in previous recipients in Mail > Window > Previous Recipients.

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
I suggest that you clear the AppWorld application cache.
    For legacy (pre-BB10) Devices:
    1. Open App World
    2. Go to My World
    3. Follow one (and only one!) of these steps:
3a. For keyboard-based BB's -- Hold down the ALT key and then press, in sequence R, then S, then T
3b. For Touch Screen Only BBs -- Hold the num-lock (!?123) button so it locks and then press, in sequence 3, then 4, then (
    3c. For newer (e,g., OS6 and 7) BB's, see this KB:
KB24714 How to clear the BlackBerry App World cache
    4. AppWorld should close.
    5. If your BB locks after issuing the cache clear, perform a battery pull reboot
    6. Return to AppWorld/MyWorld (it may be sluggish while it re-synchronizes). .
If step (4) does not happen as listed, then the clear cache did not work.
    For BB10 devices:
KB33818Downloaded applications in BlackBerry World are stuck in an Installing state and cannot be cancelled or removed from the download list
After the Clear Cache, then to re-install the app, please see this KB:
KB17625 How to install or transfer previously purchased applications from BlackBerry App World to a BlackBerry smartphone

  • Does mail.app support exchange 2010 contact pictures

    Hello,
I am using mail.app ver 6.2 on Mountain lion 10.8.2 and connecting for email to my corporate Exchange Server 2010. I can see the GAL entries and send/recieve email fine, but in my company we heavily utilise employee photos (i believe its via the AD attribute thumbnailphotos) and that does not appear to be syncing or working on mail.app or contacts.app. I spent ages on google trying to work out wether this is an unsupported feature of something isnt working right on my setup? I am begining to think Exchnage 2010 is not fully supported yet as IOS seems to have the same issue when adding users from the GAL to contacts they dont appear in the sync'd contact on the iphone either.
    thanks
    Andrew

Yes, OSX's Mail in SL works with Exchange 2010.  (I was running that combo before I upgraded to OSX Lion.)

  • Quoting/threading phenomena in mail.app -- due to problems in incoming messages?

    Folks:
    Mail 5.1 on MacOS 10.7.x
I began using Mail.app when I installed 10.7, shortly after the initial release.
No problems with respect to unformatted email or replying to short, trivial length formatted message.  For complex, on-going discussions  I feel that consistent and reliable quoting and threading behavior are essential.   But that is not happening in some cases. I'd like to figure out why, and what I might do to fix the issue.
(Note:  I do not want to get into a discussion here of formatted versus unformatted email.  Both have their pros and cons. Nor do I want to spend a lot of time debating this issue with my correspondents.  As a matter of courtesy, I set Mail.app to respond using the same message format as the original message.)
When I reply to a formatted email,  I notice that mail.app sometimes draws a dark grey box --with rounded corners-- around one or more incoming paragraphs, placing a circled "X"  "close icon" at the upper left.   I don't get it.  To what does this correspond?  Why does mail.app mark-off this text and offer a "close icon"?   As far as I know I'm not doing anything that implies I might want to delete the text.
(Note:  Rummaging around in the corresponding message source, it seems that these boxes correspond to blockquoted text in the received message.)
Editing within one of these boxes is really unpredictable.  Sometimes I can select an insertion point and insert a line-break, in preparation of replying to the text just above.  Sometimes nothing happens. Sometimes I can select text, and cut it. Sometimes nothing happens at all to the selected text.
Mail.app commonly doesn't  correctly increase the quoting level in such paragraphs.  Using
        Format> Quote Level>Increase
to maintain threading history manually is fairly easy since I've defined a function-key shortcut, which works some of the time -- but  the effect of this command is unpredictable.  Sometimes this command deletes the selected text entirely.  (Grrrrrr!)  The workaround I've found is to select smaller chunks of text.  In such cases, this command generally works correctly.
Meanwhile, messages from exactly one person --who uses gmail exclusively-- are displayed in a completely unique threaded format by mail.app.  The entire short history of 5 messages from him are displayed on multiple virtual sheets in one message window, with the latest first.    In one view, clicking on the "see more" link at the bottom of his messages unleashes a cool-looking accordion opening effect and displays my part of the thread. (I guess.  I don't totally understand this display concept.  But it looks very cool and seems to handle quoting and threading pretty well.)
    What's going on?
My best guess is that mail.app is struggling with "inconsistencies" in the incoming messages from different people using various email clients.  I seem to recall reading that email tech specs  are a hodgepodge of evolving and contradictory  standards. Is that correct?   Is that the root of my issue?
Many of my correspondents are non-tekkies and/or non-affluent, and they use whatever email client they can afford.  Some could be using really old email clients.  That doesn't help, right?  Are blockquotes a really archaic formatting measure?
When these problems occur, they can cost me a lot of time and trouble.  It's really distracting to have to deal with portions of the incoming message disappear.
I don't think it is practical to persuade my correspondents to upgrade their email clients.  Some of them have trouble simply setting the preferences to support quoting.   Threading is a difficult concept for a few.
Any suggestions?   Any mail.app preference settings I might try adjusting?  Any add-ins?   Is it possible to tell Mail.app "interpret all incoming blockquotes tags as simple breaks" or strip them entirely?  Or ...?
    TIA

    haavee:
Thanks for your reply on this thread.
And thanks for the confirmation:  Yes, often difficult, and completely unworkable in some cases.
To my surprise, I've been able to find very few people reporting similiar observations.  Very little about this issue at all on the web.
I looked for command-key variations on Format --> Make Plain Text, hoping for a block action, but none I tried was any different.
Here is my current view of the issue:
    • For formatted messages, each email client operates differently.  If there is a standard it seems to be no more robust than "use simple HTML for formatted messages".
    • The "can't insert" issue, as well as those mysterious rectangle-surrounded blocks, seems very correlated with the presence of html <div> sections in the message.  It is awkward to experiment, so I've only done a limited amount.  My observations so far:
-- I don't think you can insert text anywhere "inside" a <div>, and mail.app seems to treat <div> as a "sticky" attribute -- e.g/ very difficult/impossible to remove without deleting the text inside.  The copy-style method doesn't seem to affect <div> tags.
-- Based on one case, it appears that message bodies composed of back-to-back <div> sections are impervious to inserts anywhere. (The email client used by one particular person with whom I've corresponded seems to build messages out of --you guessed it-- back-to-back <div> sections. Putting on my HTML coders hat -- I cannot see any sense at all in doing this. Smells to me like a kludge/hack, as you prefer.)
    • What about an applicable mail.app add-in?  I can find mail.app add-ins, but it seems the  mail.app tech info (API) isn't public, so those that exist are based on guesswork about how it works. This means that add-ins must be re-tooled possibly for each new version of mail.app. Altogether, not encouraging for add-in developers. And, yes, consistent with that the range of functionality I've seen is rather limited.  So, I've given up looking in the add-in category.
    • Applescript has commands for controlling mail.app generally, but I didn't see anything approaching the level of function necessary to remove <divs> by global search-and-replace. (I'm far from an Applescript expert, so it is very possible I missed something.) Nor did I see any general command such as Clean up dodgy HTML in message.  (I can dream!)
The only bit of progress I've had is finding TextSoap: http://www.unmarked.com/textsoap/ which may have promise. But I have had no time to evaluate it and it may be a month or so before I get a chance to check it out.
Looking at the upper right of the window in which I'm composing this message, there's a button "HTML" that lets me see --and edit-- the underlying HTML. On first glance, there's not enough functionality to, say, efficiently clean up all insert-resistant blocks in a message, but it looks practical to clean up individual blocks, and maybe that's all it would take.    Though I imagine that the user base for these forums is not very different from that of mail.app, I'm guessing adding this function to mail.app isn't even a dim possibity.  Oh, well...
I note you are happy with your solution, so I'll try see if a variation of it might help me.
    Thanks,
    h.2

  • Can't manage the mail accounts in Mail App

The Windows 8.1 has a build-in mail app-Windows Live Mail. I set up my email accounts at the first time I run it without any issues. However, I can't find any way to manage these accounts. The interface doesn't look like the traditional mail app in Windows 7 which has a ribbon on the top. There is no ribbon, no function key for the account management. The windows 8.1 manual instructs to use the function key in the ribbon. How can I bring the ribbon show up or any way to manage the email accounts?
    Thanks.

  • Mail.app adding double spaces

Recently Mail.app has started to replace some single sword spaces in plain-text e-mails with double spaces. I ran some tests and it seems to occur at regular intervals. Every 60+ characters, Mail.app adds a double space between words instead of a single one.
Every message shows up correctly in the "Sent" folder but when I check Hotmail, for example, there are suddenly double spaces popping up here and there. I've checked my e-mail on university campus with another e-mail client (Horde) and it also displayed double spaces every 60 characters or so.
I've tried another POP-account and the problem persisted. I've trashed the Mail.app .plist and the problem is still there. I've looked at every setting in the "Preferences" menu and the problem is still present.
I don't have the first clue what is wrong or how to fix this.
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I believe I have a fix; this at least worked for me on both machines (home and work) that were exhibiting this issue:
Quit Mail and Safari (the latter may be voodoo on my part, but why not?)
Open Users -> <username> -> Library -> Mail -> V2 -> MailData (In OS X 10.8, the easy shortcut to the Library folder, which is hidden, is to hold down the Option key and click on the Go menu in the Finder; it'll appear as an option without a keyboard shortcut.)
Move all files with names that begin "Envelope Index" to the Trash. I had three such files.
Restart (again, this may be voodoo)
Open Mail. It will engage in a full reindexing of all your messages. I had about 65,000 messages, and this import/index process took about 10 minutes.
Once import is complete, your inboxes may appear to be empty. I had to quit Mail and relaunch it before all my messages were visible.
After some quick testing on previously problematic emails, the super annoying line break bug seems to be gone!

  • Mail app asking to add contact

    I got a new 5S.  Updated to iOS 8.2
My email is using exchange to connect to my work.  I have no other email accounts on this phone.
As of this new phone or iOS - when a new email comes in from a person not in my contact list - the email app asks if I want to add the contact or ignore.
Why is it doing this - and how to stop it from happening.  All our contacts at work are controlled and I do not want to add contacts.  Now or ever.  I get 100s of emails and this step is not needed and irritating.
I have another 5S with iOS 8.2 that is connected to Gmail.  Using the native app as well.  This phone does not ask if I want to add a contact.  this makes me believe it is unique to the exchange connections.
    HELP!
    Thanks!

no, there is no way to do that.
    Thanks!
the only thing I can suggest is to make a signature, add some empty lines to it and check the option to insert signature above quoted text.

  • Contacts can't be viewed or add/created yet I see the in Mail app. Fix???

I just performed an upgrade to snow leopard. Now all contacts within address book have disappeared. Also, I don't have the ability to create a new contact within address book. Yet, I have the ability to view the address book when creating a new email w/in Mail app. I mention this b/c it seems that I wouldn't be able to see them while I'm having issues w/ Address Book. My primary issue is to fix address book. Here is what I have done so far to try and fix the problem with no success:
    1) Disk Utility Repair permissions
    2) Custom install of Address book from the Snow Leopard dvd
    3) Pulled out the p-lists from the library and restarted the address book/computer in hopes it would recognize them on the desktop. After that did not work I put them back into the library.
    4) ReInstall of 10.6
    Thoughts???

    Greetings,
Am I right? Is there any way to see what messages are waiting to go out?
No, there isn't an way to view messages in queue, and if you do anything to stop them, they'll disappear forever. If a server is having a problem, wait for it to timeout and give you an error message; then choose to try later and quit Mail. Then restart Mail and it will try to send it again.

You can use your gmail account within the native Mail app using IMAP
Make sure you've enabled IMAP in your main Gmail settings
Open the Settings app on your device
    Tap Mail, Contacts, Calendars
    Tap Add Account...
    Tap Gmail
Enter your account information, being sure to use your full Gmail address, including '@gmail.com'

  • The contact picture doesn't show up in the mail app

    Hi,
I've used facebook account to import all of my contacts to ML, so every contact already has a picure. In my mail app I added one of contacts to ML contacts by clicking on his name and choosing "Add to Contacts", now when I click on his name and choose "Show Contact Card" I can see his picture in the card but in mail app his picture frame doesn't show up. what's wrong?
    Thanks in advance

    Thanks sberman for reply,
No he hasn't. I've tested this with other contacs. If someone is already in my facebook cantacts and I receieve an email from him, but he hasn't included that email address in his facebook account, if I add this new email to his contact card, his picture frame will not appear in mail app. I can see his both facebook and other email address in the contact card.

  • Contact in Mail app, doesn't show up on Contacts

I have one email address contact, with name, that shows up in Mail. When I go to the TO: box, and type in the first letter of that person's name, they show up, with their email address. When I go to my contacts, that person is not listed whatsoever. They are also not a contact in my address book, nor do I synch my Yahoo or google address books.
My problem is, I want to delete this person out of my iphone, but I cannot. I can't find any way to edit the "TO:" contact list, and since they aren't in my Phone Contacts list, I don't know where to go to edit, or delete this one email.
I also recently restored my iPhone, and re-synched but the person is still in there.

All email recipients are stored in a list of previous recipients that is used for the autofill feature when addressing a message in addition to the address book. The Mail.app on a Mac includes the same along with an option to access the list of previous recipients. You can add a previous recipient to the Address Book that is not already entered, or remove a previous recipient from the list.
Access to the list of previous recipients with the iPhone's mail client is not available - at the present time anyway.
If you restored your iPhone with iTunes from your iPhone's backup, this data is included with your iPhone's backup.
To get rid of what is currently in the list of previous recipients at the present time requires restoring your iPhone with iTunes as a new iPhone or not from your iPhone's backup. Relatively big price to pay regarding something that shouldn't be extremely difficult to ignore - at least until access to the list of previous recipients is supported.
