Mail.app always puts a sent email in Outbox, sends on open

Mail.app always wants to have one of my sent emails in the Outbox.
When I open Mail, it send the message.
This is really annoying as it is a message I've already sent, so I have to let the recipient know to ignore it.
It is a different email each time. If I delete the message from the Outbox, it appears as though the Outbox is empty. But if I click on another Mailbox, then click back on the Outbox, there is another email waiting to be sent when I re-open Mail.app!
I've tried rebuilding the mailbox, which doesn't fix it.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
James.

Thanks Allan.
Good suggestion. Tried it but unfortunately it didn't work. it recreates the Outbox directory in ~/Library/Mail/Mailboxes when I open it. The directory no longer has anything in it (ie no info.plist of Massages folder).
But when I am in Mail.app it still has a message in the outbox. I have to delete it quickly when I open Mail.app, otherwise it will send it.
After I delete it, the window has no messages in it, but on the left the mailbox has a '1' in circle next to it. When I click on another mailbox then click back on Outbox, a 'new' (but previously sent) email is there ready to resend.
I'm using IMAP and my Mail.app at home does not have this problem (both machines are using Leopard 10.5.3)

I have two personal e-mail accounts and a general account that I have synced to my Mail app, but I keep getting emails sent to the non-personal e-mail because they're on the same server. How can I change that?

The only ways I know of for email to get sent to an account are:
    1. It was addressed to that account. Someone used that email address to send you the email.
    2. It was forwarded to that account by the account to which it had been addressed. I am not aware of Mail having this feature but it is often a feature provided by your ISP that you can turn on by logging into your account via the Internet and setting it up.  I assume you have not done this, though.
With several email addresses in the same Mail client, you have to be careful which one you are sending from. If you send from the wrong address, any replies will come back to that same address. I make this mistake all too often.

  • How do I set the "reply to" field in the iPad 2 Mail app?  I use an email forwarding service (not an actual email account) that I would like people to reply to.

How do I set the "reply to" field in the iPad 2 Mail app?  I use an email forwarding service (not an actual email account) that I would like people to reply to, so setting up an account with the correct reply-to address doesn't work because there's no associated outgoing mail server.  I had this working under iOS4 but it seems to have disappeared when I upgraded to iOS5.

Welcome to the forum, NicoleYM. I don't think the Touch Mail has as many options as the Mac Mail app. However, you could set a standard signature. Go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Signature. There you can type a reply address and hope people see it.
Alternatively, you can go to your GMail account in your web browser and click on Settings > Forwarding and POP/IMAP. There you will have an option to forward all emails (or only some, if you set up a filter) to your other address.
    Good luck!

  • Having trouble with mail.app always cc'ing myself

Having trouble with mail.app always reply all is cc'ing myself. Solution was to add another address under the account so that it recoginzes aliases as well as the primary account that you are sending from. Then it will recognize all the addresses and aliases associated with the account.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
In the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports (not "Diagnostic and Usage Messages") for crash reports related to the crashed process. The report name starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents—again, the text, not a screenshot. I know the report is long. Please post all of it anyway.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

After some searching I have found a solution. I had to delete the contents of the following folder:
    ~/Library/Mail/myemailaccount/.OfflineCache/
Note: replace "myemailaccount" with the appropriate folder on your computer that represents your e-mail account. Once I deleted the contents of this folder (there were 2 files), and restarted Mail, there were no problems.
Hope this helps a few people in the future!

  • Password protecting mail app and permanent deletion of emails so they don't appear in spotlight search

I realise that there is a temporary way to prevent this happening by unticking the 'mail' option in the spotlight search settings menu, but how do you permanently delete the emails? I assumed that when I hit delete then emptied the trash box, the mails were gone for good. But finding that they remain stored in some hidden place and can be easily accessed is very annoying! In fact, finding that other users can quickly change the settings back and have free access to my email is rather disturbing anyway, especially as there is no way to password protect my email account once i activate the mail app. the apple mail app is linked to my yahoo account, but within yahoo mail there seems to be no problem in regards to deleted mail being stored somewhere else, only within the apple app system.
So i guess id like to know, is there some way to password protect my account or do I just need to keep deleting my account before lending the ipad to someone else and then reinstating it? And is there any way to properly delete emails for good?
I would be happy just to go without the mail app and log in directly through yahoo in Safari, except that I find the notification alert when I receive a new mail very handy!!

[edit] I dragged the email I sent through the MBP Mail app (under MAILBOXES > Sent > Yahoo!) to the highlighted Sent folder (YAHOO! > Sent), and now it shows up on all Yahoo Sent folders (iPad app, web browser, phone app). Not entirely solved the issue but will use web browser to sent future emails to keep everything in sync.

  • Mail.app is 20GB full of email - How to manage?

    Hi,
I'm working with a client who has 20GB + of data in Mail.app. It has already exploded on her iMac and I'm concerned the same will happen on her PowerBook soon if we don't come up with better mail management strategies. I've moved most of the mail out of the In Box and she has maybe 50-60 (On My Mac) folders with all of her clients spilled out alphabetically on the folders.
Is there a protocol anyone would recommend?
In addtion to this, she's trying to sync this account on at least 3 macs using a dotmac IMAP set-up. Not true "sync" but use the IMAP mac.com mailbox to view the same mail on all three computers. I'm worried that Rules that would move messages out of the IN BOX into a folder on one computer, would make them unavailable on the other two.
Any thoughts or strategies on this?
    Very much obliged,
    Mick

so I assumed you'd uploaded it.
Well, it’s definitely there. Don’t know why you don’t
see it, but it’s available for everybody, just like
    the other avatars.
Well, I'll be. You're right. Don't know why I missed it. Sorry for the goose chase.
    > And an "individual mailbox" is
the same as a folder that one might
    create "On My Mac?"
Custom mailboxes appear as generic blue folders in
    the mailbox list, yes.
These are the ones that she has 20GB stored in.
    There is another kind of
folder (white) that’s meant to be used only as a
    parent folder for other folders:
    Blue and white Mail folders
    explained
Yeah, I get the difference. There's a big "Import" folder that is grey/white when we import her data from the exploded program.
    > There was definitely file system
    corruption AND there was something
rather drastic that happened to Mail.app.
Well, if there was some filesystem corruption, it
should be no surprise that an application managing 20
GB of data would be particularly affected and that
recovering that would be particularly painful...
    Yup.

haven't, but it sure looks like it does to
    me.
Yeah, I read that ages ago and still lost data with mailboxes that would not recover or rebuild. Thanks for the note, but there's still something that's not being said in that note. I wish I understood how messages could be so completely lost when they used to be there. I wonder if it's the Mbox format or what. In Eudora Pro, this would never happen, ever. Probably because everything was text based.
I miss Eudora but it just wouldn't handle modern, html email very well. I got tired of looking at junk that Mail.app would usually display perfectly. However, nothing can beat the level at which Eudora could manage large amounts of mail with filters, boiler plates and hundreds of customizable settings. I really look forward to a time when Apple opens up Mail.app to users who need and want more custom solutions.
If you’ve read somewhere that .Mac can synchronize
mail stored locally, then it’s you who has
read something I haven’t and that Apple doesn’t say
    anywhere...
    > What does "Mail accounts" sync
    if not that?
    Account settings.
Well, then you know more than me. I haven't had time to read up on that and it seemed like it was aimed at syncing the entire account, not just settings.
    > IMAP is not the only way to do
    so.
    Sure it is.
I'm not attempting a debate here, just mentioning there are third party sync utilities that one can use if they want to. I have not found them terribly effective yet.
    > There are other programs and
    solutions
Such as? May I suggest searching in this forum for
that as well before you do something you might
    regret?
It's all about time. Not knowing if there really IS a reliable answer out there, I simply do not have time to search the forums endlessly in search of an anonymous answer from someone who may or may not be "knowledgeable."
But, I wouldn't try anything with a client's data without it being fully backed up and tested. No worries there.
    > The server would have to be web
    based because the computers are
not always in the same building.
I have no idea what server are you talking about here
nor why do you tell me this in reply to me saying
that I don’t see why the two computers being in
different rooms would be a problem...
    > we may be looking at other
solutions too since there's a desire for FileMaker
    and others.
I don’t understand this either. What does FileMaker
have to do with synchronizing mail between computers?
I think that perhaps this discussion may have grown without me stating clearly that it was growing. We're talking about more than just email syncing in regards to this particular client. And we have computers that are sometimes in the same building and sometimes not. It's very complex by today's standard in technology. I'm sure it will be something very simple in a few years.
The email is easy enough to sync with IMAP solutions, it's just about how to direct a client to understand what IMAP is all about. The rest of the data, Word docs, FMP databases, and so forth is more challenging.
David, thanks for your input on this.

  • Please help with setting up native mail app using Gmail with alternate email address

I have an alternative email address setup such as [email protected] configured to use with my online Gmail account.  In the online account, I use the alternate email services smtp server so emails are sent correctly from that alias.
Is there a way to setup the native mail app to use Gmail for mail, contacts, and calendar and use an alternate email address as the sender?  Right now I am syncing contacts and the calendar through the native mail app and using the Gmail mail app for my email.  It allows you to select from all of the emails setup on the Gmail account.
But for simplicity sake, I would like to consolidate to the native email app for all of my accounts - I also have an Exchange based work account.

  • IOS 5 Mail app always push mail

    hi there,
I have set 2 mailbox with Exchange settings in the mail app on my iPhone 4S (iOS 5.0.1)
As I was on holiday I have set the mail settings to disable PUSH and enable FETCH with the schedule "hourly"
BUT I have figured out that I am receiving the email still as push and not only downloaded hourly.
Now I am back in the office and I have tested it.
If the mail app is running I am receiving the email even faster (2-3 seconds) than my computer with Outlook running and connected to the Exchange server local...
If the mail app is NOT running I am receiving the emails a little bit later, like 20-30 seconds after they arrive in Outlook.
    BUT not JUST only hourly.
    Here are my settings:
    How is it?! Bug?
    or
Works as designed? If push is available it doesn't count what are the other settings it will drain battery and use as push?
That cannot be, if I am on holiday or in the office before my laptop I didn't want to receive my business mails with push.
If I am abroad yes, for this I will use "push ON"...
But for other just "fetch hourly"
    Is this possible?

    Thanks Allan.

I have deleted Mail.App and reinstalled it via my Leopard CD. Same thing still happens.

    Hello Timothy:
I will answer here as I do not want to confuse the other thread.
First of all, the person giving you advice is obviously a "tecchie." While there is nothing wrong with that, no one should have to descend to arcane UNIX commands to fix/troubleshoot problems.
Trashing the preference file simply eliminates a possible corrupt file that, if damaged, could cause all sorts of problems. OS X rebuilds preference files as needed with default parameters.
I do not read crash logs well (nor do I ever want to do that). I have no clue where you are now since I do not know what has been done. I run one mail source (in my case, AOL) through Apple's mail application and have never had a problem.
I hesitate to suggest further things as I do not wish to worsen your situation. Frankly, if I were you, I would run an archive and install to "eliminate" any Apple software problems. Archive and install would place a fresh copy of OS X on the system while, at the same time, preserving your files, programs, and settings. As always, one should back up before any software changes.

  • Mail app does not sync "Sent" or "Read" messages with my iPhone mail app.

I just started using a new Mac Mini (running 10.9.1). I have the Mail app connected to a handfull of different email addresses, and my iPhone mail app is connected to the same addresses. If I send a message on one device, the other device will not show it. If I read a message on one, the other will not show that I've read it.
I assume the two Apple devices, both running up-to-date operating systems and using the native Mail app, should be communicating with each other in a way that allows me to work between the two seamlessly. Am I just incorrect in my assumption, is there something I can fix, or is this a bug we're waiting to have repaired?

Actually, my Gmail is the one that does work appropriately. I have a few IMAP addresses I use that do not sync between devices.

  • In Mail where can i find my sent emails? How do I open this send box?

In Mail how do I open the send box? I need to find and forward my sent emails.

If you hold the iPad in landscape orientation you should see your email account id (or Mailboxes if you only have one email account set up on the iPad) shown top left. Tap on your account id (or Mailboxes), and then tap on Sent to show your Sent emails. You should then be able to select an email and Reply/Reply All/Forward/Print them via the arrow icon top right.

  • GMAIL IMAP: Mail app on iPhone, random old emails showing as new in inbox.

    Hi all,
I've tried to get an answer to this elsewhere, hopefully someone here can shed some light on my problem.
I just switched both my GMAIL accounts from POP to IMAP: using the web interface, everything's fine; using the Mail app on my desktop, everything's fine; however, using the Mail app on my iPhone, one of the accounts is fine, but the other account only show a random smattering of email from between 2005 and 2007 as the "newest" emails. Now, new emails come in fine and dandy but as soon as there are fewer than 25, WHAM!, these random group starts showing up in the inbox. It's annoying as all get out. I've tried deleting the account from my iPhone and setting it up from scratch, to no avail. If both accounts were acting this way I'd chalk it up to either an error on my end, or some tick between GMAIL and my phone but these seem not to be the case. So, how about it? Any insight out there?
    thanks,
    christian

Yes that is normal. The sync between your gmail inbox and the all mail folder in gmail is not immediate, so you will have an emal that will appear as unread in the all mail folder, yet you did read it already in the gmail inbox. There is no way around this nagging issue at present.
I cannot comment on the other point you raise as uses/behavior for sharing one's computer vary greatly. If you have privacy issues and still share your computer with others, you may want to create a guest user profile and have others use this guest user profile when using your computer. That way they will be able to use a browser, or create a document and so on and so forth, but will be prevented from seeing the data/files/folders and applications - the way you have set them up - you see when you are logged in.
To create a guest account go to system preferences>accounts
    hope this helps
