Mail app does not spell check

I have Mail prefs set to 'Check spelling as I type' but it does not. It does not check spelling using contextual menu either. It used to do both these things but they seem to have wandered off. Can anyone help?

I'd say your Mail preferences file is corrupt, so if that's true, you need to re-create it like this:
Quit Mail.
Go to Home/Library/Mail and:
*If you have an IMAP account (that includes MobileMe or .Mac accounts)*
move the account folders for those IMAP accounts to your Desktop.
Then restart Mail, setup those account(s) again and wait for Mail to download your email again. Re-set your preferences for everything, then check to see if the problem continues.
If not, then problem solved and you can delete the mail account folders on your Desktop.

after upgrading to mountain lion, i find that my mail app does not have a "VIP" Tab. Was wondering if anyone else has this issue and what it is about?

First, select sender(s) as VIPs. Then the VIP category will appear.
To select a sender as a VIP, open an email from that sender, then hover over their name and a star icon will appear to the left. Click the star, and that sender will be set as a VIP (and the category will appear in the pane on the left).

  • Windows 8.1 Mail app does not sync with the Office 365 account

My company has recently switched to Office 365. Windows 8.1 Metro Mail app does not work with Office365 account. When I switch to IMAP it works but that is soon going to be disabled and is not compliant with the company policy.
I can add the account and it also pushes the security policies but it does not sync email at all. Says account is not available. The tablet shows up on the mobile devices on the office 365 and I could also remote wipe it.
It seems everything works except basing email sync. What could be the issue?

Mail app does not open at all. When pushing the button nothing happens

    Try resetting your phone:
Press the sleep/wake button & home button at the same time, keep pressing until you see the Apple logo, then release.

  • HT3159 Mail app does not open

My mail application does not open anymore. It appears on the dock, but neither opens, nor does it close. Also, can't get the Mac to shut down, as it says the app is still open.
    What can I do?
    I have OS X 10.6.8 Snow leopard.
    Thank you.

    Hello,
You can Force Quit an application. Press the keys (at the same time) : command + option + escape
You will see a window when you can select an application and click Force Quit.
If that doesn't work, to shut down, press for at least 5 seconds on the power button of your Mac.
    Hope this will help.

  • Mail.app does not like ssl on non-standard port

Simple set up with imaps via ssh tunnel on another machine.
I am connecting via a tunnel and expect to have certificate errors on connection.
Connecting from mail.app with the server on port 10933 does not work. Thunderbird works with the same configuration.
Changing only the port number on the tunnel machine (to 993) then Mail.app performs as expected. No difference to Thunderbird.

Sorry, this is not a solution, but I had the same problem and did extensive troubleshooting on it today. It seems that if the port# is non-standard, Mail will connect in the clear, regardless whether the SSL box is checked.
I was trying to run an SSL-enabled IMAP server (dovecot) on port 1009. I verified that Mail was connecting to that port using netstat. However, it did not succeed in connecting, it reported a timeout error. Yet I can connect manually with openssl s_client.
Next I tried running the non-SSL IMAP server on the same port, WITHOUT changing any of the Mail settings: still port 1009, SSL box checked. This time it did connect properly.
Must be a bug in Mail.app

  • Mail app does not sync "Sent" or "Read" messages with my iPhone mail app.

I just started using a new Mac Mini (running 10.9.1). I have the Mail app connected to a handfull of different email addresses, and my iPhone mail app is connected to the same addresses. If I send a message on one device, the other device will not show it. If I read a message on one, the other will not show that I've read it.
I assume the two Apple devices, both running up-to-date operating systems and using the native Mail app, should be communicating with each other in a way that allows me to work between the two seamlessly. Am I just incorrect in my assumption, is there something I can fix, or is this a bug we're waiting to have repaired?

Actually, my Gmail is the one that does work appropriately. I have a few IMAP addresses I use that do not sync between devices.

  • T-Bird does not spell check the subject line of an email. (v24.4.0).

    Hello,
When composing an email I have chosen to have Thunderbird 24.4.0. check for misspelled words with both underline and spell check prior to sending.
While testing I noticed that it underlined and spell checked everything except the "Subject" line.
Thunderbird will underline misspelled words in the "Subject" line but won't look for a correct word prior to sending as it does with the body of the email.
Are you aware of this and is a fix on the way?
    Thanks so much
    -v-

Absolutely NO themes or add-ons whatsoever on my system. I run the program "as is" when downloaded (v.24.4.0). I restarted in safe mode as a you suggested. I got the same results - no spell checking in the subject line. Spell check drops directly to the body of the email. Spell checked the body fine. Running WIndows 7. I have also uninstalled and reinstalled to see if that would correct the problem. It did not.

  • IPhone Mail.app does not sort mails by date

I've just copied about 3000 old mails from a POP3 account to my Gmail account (IMAP). This was done through OS X mail.app, which just works perfect both in the OS X Mail.app and in the Gmail web interface.
The problem is that the Mail.app on my iPhone seems to sort the mails by some kind of mail ID so all the copied mails appears first in the Mail.app. I can't find any way to sort the mails by their date, which I guess will solve the problem.
If there is missing importing information about the problem please let me know so I can supply with more information.

This is a known issue with gmail. I found this in their FAQ:
"Messages uploaded or copied into Gmail using IMAP may display the wrong date in your inbox or other labels."
    See http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=82365&topic=12922
Apparently "The correct dates should appear in conversation view." applies only to web browsers and not the iPhone Mail app.

  • The mail app does not rotate, only this

    Only this app!!!

Try closing the Mail app via the taskbar and see if it rotates when you re-open the app : from the home screen (i.e. not with the Mail app 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Mail app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
If that doesn't fix it then try a soft-reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • Mail app. does not open up- error 1000

Does anyone know where I can download mail app. for imax OS x.2.8?

You can't download the specific mail app. It would be on the install cds. Try installing the 10.2.8 combined updater. It might solve your problem: http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosxupdatecombo10_28.html
My grandmother's computer is running 10.3.9. Mail stopped opening and I ran the 10.3.9 combo updater and it works fine now.

  • OSX 10.5.8 / Mail.app 3.6 - Mail.app No Longer Auto-Checks For New Mail

Since I upgraded to 10.5.8, Mail.app does not appear to be checking automatically for new mail. Regardless of how I set the preference (Every 1 Minute, Every 5 Minutes) it never checks for new mail, and I always have to click on "Get Mail".
I've verified this by opening the Activity WIndow and watching it for more than 5 minutes, with the preference set to 1 and 5 minutes between checks. I don't have time to test the longer intervals right now.
Mail.app is at version 3.6, modified yesterday morning at the same time that I used Software Update to apply the 10.5.8 update (from 10.5.7). I've used Spotlight to make sure that this is the only version of Mail.app on the drive.

Never mind...for the account in question, the "include this account when checking automatically" option was unchecked. Not sure how that happened...
