Mail.app doesn't retrieve new mail

MAIL was asking constantly for Password on IMAP server. Couldn't hold on to it. Now I don't even get that. Activity Window show near constant cycling of Registering Synchronization Preferences (I think that was it). And ... never retrieved mail from IMAP server. ISP says they have no answer on their end and their experience with MAIL since 10.5 has been buggy, with no fixes on their end. Suggestions, please?

I too am having this problem with Mail (on 10.5.6). Im not sure when the problem started, but I have noticed it more recently (past couple of months).
I too have an iPhone and receive my MobileMe email and Exchange (university account) email instantly. I understand that both of these are correctly configured for 'push' email on my iPhone, but I would have thought that they would only lag by a few seconds in Mail on my MacBook Pro.
I have often found that I receive the email on my iPhone and then wish to reply to it on my laptop, only to discover that even if I press 'Get Mail' the email has not been retrieved.
The only way that I have found to fix this is to quit the mail application, re-launch it and then find the new mail waiting for me.
I can understand that this lag will be more obvious on the exchange account (due to the iPhone fully supporting exchange and active-sync). But I dont understand why I get a large lag (sometimes 10 minutes) with my mobileme account, even when mail is set to check every minute.
Thanks in advance for anyones help.

  • IPhone 4's standard "notes" app doesn't save new updates?

I regularly use the 'notes' app that comes standard on the iPhone for everything. Shopping lists, to do lists, you name it. But with the new iPhone 4, the app doesn't save new edits. I'll type in or delete something, and then after I hit done, the "thinking" thing at the top left rolls around a few times, and then whatever I just typed in disappeared, or whatever I deleted reappears. Help!

I don't live in that area (I'm in northern Orange County, CA), but my neighbor and I have been having the same problem since last Saturday (Feb. 5) in the area around where we live (we both have iPhone 4's, and they still work fine in other areas). Note that we have full bars, and the "3G" symbol on the display, but get no data over 3G; disabling 3G allows access using EDGE (slowly), and phone/texting works fine (it's just the 3G data in our neighborhood that's broken). Since we both have WiFi in our homes, we didn't initially identify the 3G problem; what we both noticed was a sudden increase in iPhone power consumption (beginning last Saturday) when we are in our neighborhood (even when the phones are idle); I used to go 3-4 days on a charge, but now the battery drops at a rate of about 10%/hour when I'm around the house. Interestingly, my neighbor also has an iPad, and it doesn't exhibit the problem. Both phones and the iPad are running iOS V4.2.1. We've tried all the normal things (rebooting, clearing network settings, etc.), and nothing works. I spent some time on the phone last night with AT&T, and they are going to send someone out to check connectivity.

  • Mail doesn't show new messages

Mail sometimes doesn't show new messages for an IMAP account. The badge in the dock says that there is a new mail but it doesn't show up in the inbox. I'm sure that I didn't just miss it, because, smart mailboxes will not find that new mail as well. When I restart mail, the mail finally shows up in the inbox as well.
Anybody else seeing this and what can I do to resolve that issue?
    Thanks!

I'll bring everyone up to speed on what's been happening with my family accounts. I first suspected Safari, because it seemed to be a local problem, but then, inexplicably, all mobileme mail accounts tied to that family account, which included 4 subaccounts and 1 mail-only account, not only did not work in mail.app, but also failed in other email clients I tested, including clients on Linux. Also, the webmail version was not working well, either.
So, if your problem is isolated to a single computer and just to mail.app, or just with a particular network, then I think the local troubleshooting steps are the way to go.
But, if your problem extends to other platforms, clients, and webmail, then it is likely an issue the engineers at Apple will have to figure out. I found the online chat service for mobileme users to be very helpful in checking through all the 'usual suspects' and after we had pretty much ruled out any of the usual culprits, it was escalated to the engineers, who are working on it now.
They were able to release all the email that had been piling up, but there are still some glitches they are trying to iron out. As an aside, I have been personally managing various mail servers for a dozen years, and am well aware of the difficulties in diagnosing email problems, and it was stumping me, and I have intimate knowledge of Exim and Exchange and various email modules used with mx services.
+While this 'should never happen', it's unrealistic for users to expect it never will. Of all the services provided on the Internet, email, is arguably the most complex service and it's become much more complex in the past few years. In my work, typically 94% of all email traffic hitting the server is filtered out as spam. So, the 6% that is allowed through is the stuff most of us see and are spending time and resources filtering out the 20-40% additional unwanted spam that the host let through because if they tightened it down any further the risk of false positives would become too great. I spend way more time on the mail service aspects of my job than the web services, and mail problems occupy at least 80% of my troubleshooting logs. So, while email seems more 'simple' than the exotic and bandwidth intensive services like video chat, voip, and web2 transactions, compared to the amount of wasted bandwidth and cpu cycles filtering packets, I think email is the number one problem service for most host providers. We tried to depend upon it for mission-critical communications, and it was never designed for that initially, and the spammers are making certain it won't achieve that status at least in the near future. If anything, email is your least dependable Internet service. Combine this with the growing array of user configurations, email clients, forwarding/retrieving/syncing scenarios, and user experience, and you may find yourself uttering a little prayer now and then for the poor email administrators and support personnel.+
[end of sermon - thanx for letting me get that off my chest; I feel better now! I'll feel a lot better when my email is flowing smoothly, but that's out of my hands for now.]

  • Updated my iphone 3gs to the ios4.3.5. Now the mail application doesn't function properly. App doesn't sync mail from server - deleting mail hardly works now. When the phone downloads messages from the mail server, it bounces/flashes between accounts too

I recently upgraded to Lion and then updated my iphone to iOS 4.3.5. Now my mail app on the phone seems all messed up. When I check mail, it pulls down mail from the server but I have to go into each individual account to make that happen but even then the view automatically bounces from one mail account to another but never to the Microsoft Exchange server. It also doesn't let me delete mail

I have wasted much time trying different combinations to have push and gmail "send mail as". I guess I have tried so much because it seems like a no brainer.
If you set up as exchange you can at least add in the extra comma and address, but it disappears when you go to send an email.
very frustrating indeed. my solution is to use the gmail app for notifications of new email.

  • Mail app is not showing new Hotmail emails

    Hi everyone:
I'm not sure what to blame here -- Hotmail or this upcoming iOS7 release. Let me explain. Since long ago I set up several Hotmail email accounts on my iPad 2 in the built-in mail app. Everything used to work great but since recently the mail app doesn't seem to update automatically if I have new emails. Only when I open up the mail app and manually drag the list of emails down to fresh it, only then it loads them up -- something like a dozen at a time. This is a fairly recent thing. It'd be nice if it was loading them up as they come -- like it used to do.
Any idea what's going on there?
PS. I tried force-closing the mail app, as well as rebooting the iPad. It didn't help.
PS2. I have not installed or changed anything on that iPad for a long time -- only the updates that come out in the App Store.

You dont happen to have any other accounts to see if it is just hotmail do you? Lets try turn off/on push, setting > mail, contacts, calendars and delete account and readd again, and lastly setting > general > reset > reset network setting (it will take off your wifi passwords/cellular info/vpns).

  • Outlook 2011 for Mac stops retrieving new e-mail

I have both Outlook 2011 for Mac and Apple Mac tied to the same Gmail account via IMAP. After a few hours, Outlook stops retrieving new e-mail while Apple Mail continues retrieving new e-mail with no problem. I've already deleted the Gmail account from Outlook and recreated it. What could be causing this? Should Microsoft Office 2011 for Mac be re-installed? Does Outlook 2011 create a log during the e-mail send/receive process that I can review?

Any good news from the Mac Forum?

  • Mail app doesn't work

Mail app doesn't work after Yosemite OSX upgrade. At first it didn't check email and now it doesn't boot. I tried many times, but nothing happens

Ok after nearly going crazy I read something about someone having a problem with a program related to fonts not being installed. I started up font book and now my problem is miraculously resolved... This is good and bad. I don't know why having font book running would resolve my problem or know what font is causing the programs not to work. As far as I know I didn't disable any system fonts. And the problem doesn't happen when font book is running, which is confusing me.

  • Won't retrieve new mail

I am running Mail.app 3.6 on OS X 10.5.8. I have three IMAP mail accounts set up.
Last night, Mail.app stopped pulling in new mail. You can click the Get Mail button, it goes and looks (it all looks normal in the Activity Window), and returns with no new mail. Yet if I quit Mail.app and check with any other client (webmail, Alpine, iPhone via IMAP), I see lots of new mail.
My laptop had been up for a few days, so I closed mail (had to force-quit) and rebooted. No luck. I also repaired all permissions. I have tried deleting one of my INBOX.imapmbox directories. It quickly recreated it, with the same mail. Nothing new.
All three mail accounts are on different servers, running two different IMAP servers (Courier-IMAP and UW-imap). I have checked on one, and when mail quits, it closes all imapd processes. There are no other mail connections open, so I don't think it's a locking issue. I don't think it's a server issue, because it's happening on all three of my mail accounts.
Mail works fine with all the mail that is visible. You can delete messages, etc. If you log in via webmail and mark a message as unread, that change is reflected in Mail.app.
The short of the long: Mail.app just won't see any new mail since about 11pm last night.
    Help! Any thoughts?
    Thanks,
    Seth

After trying lots of other ideas (including removing a mail account and recreating it), I have deleted my preference files and my Library/Mail folder. Starting over completely from scratch seems to have fixed it.
I'm disappointed that I could find a better solution.

  • Mail app doesn't launch

    my mail app doesn't launch
    using Lion

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
Still in the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the process. The report name starts with the name of the crashed process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • Mail suddenly duplicates all previous emails and won't retrieve new ones

At around 3pm today I saw that my my mac mail program download a 2nd copy of all the messages on my server, and won't retrieve any newer ones since. My Iphone will retrieve new ones and I am able to send from my mac mail program but just not receive.... I went on to my website email server and all the messages are still there too...

Sometimes messages left on the server clog up the account there, or Mail may end up losing track of which messages have already been downloaded, or Mail may choke on a particular message it cannot download and that prevents it from downloading the rest as well. Solving this problem will probably require removing one or more messages from the server.
You may tell Mail to remove from the server all the messages that have already been downloaded by means of Preferences > Accounts > Advanced > Remove now. Alternatively, you may use the Account Info window to remove specific messages from the server — choose Get Info (⌘I) from the Action menu (gear icon) located below the mailbox list in the main Mail window. And if the account allows web access, you may also remove messages from the server that way.
Try removing from the server messages that have already been downloaded and/or the first message not downloaded yet (i.e. the message that Mail appears to be choking on).

  • Mail 4.1 and difficulty retrieving new messages

I have noticed that after upgrading to S.L., Mail sometimes takes a VERY long time to retrieve new messages from my IMAP servers. Sometimes, Mail will even tell me that my IMAP servers are offline or down, when I know they are not because I can retrieve mail using other clients / webmail / Leopard 10.5 Mail. It is getting really frustrating that sometimes I have to open and close Mail 4.1 multiple times in order to get it to sync properly with the servers. Anyone else?

I am having the same problem. I turned on IMAP logging and can see constant FETCHing to the server. It drains laptop battery, uses around 30% CPU all the time, and fails to stop - eg never get new messages.

It is making Mail useless for me. This is after it "lost" all the passwords for my mail accounts after installing 10.6.1

I've done a "rebuild" on the mailbox. I've told it to "synchronize". No joy.

I can't seem to enlarge the text on my news apps SI and The New Yorker.  Yet, I can touch and expand the test on my mail and websites. How come?

I heard someone once talking about the NY app - it's the best selling one in the publisher's line (Conde Nast?), and they deliberately kept it as simple and "untechy" as possible - the closest in their line to the actual print edition. The discussion was on how it was surprising that the magazine with the least amount of "bells and whistles" was their best seller... and a speculation that it was because it was so simple and uncluttered. Perhaps their decision to remove pinch & zoom was related to that idea.
