Mail App has stop functioning

OK... I have never had a problem with Mail. Ever. I have my mail setup for IMAP with gmail.
Today... I come in and my mail app won't function. I click "Get Mail" and it won't download the messages from the gmail server. One strange thing is I can send email. However, when I send a message the Apple mail app "spins" forever and the while it thinks the message has yet to be sent, it shows as sent on the GMAIL server.
Is my only option to delete the account and then recreate it in mail preferences?

OK... fixed my problem. I ended up having to delete a couple of smart mailboxes. It seems the troublemaking email that caused all the problems kept trying to show up in the smart mailboxes. I have no idea why. But, once I deleted the smart mailboxes, all problems went away.

  • Mail app has stopped working after 10.9.4 update on July 4, 2014

Mail is totally dead.  It does not connect to the internet.  Each of my email accounts has the exclamation triangle next to them.  No new peripherals or devices or USB connections were added after the update.  The system worked before the update, and the same system stopped working (Mail app so far) after the update.

In your opinion Apple was doing a garbage job, when in fact it was Intego that trashed your Mac. That's all it is capable of doing.
But now I have no virus protection.
This is a common misconception. OS X already includes everything it needs to protect itself from viruses and malware. Keep it that way with software updates from Apple. Ill-conceived "anti-virus" garbage convey no benefit and as you found out, can simply prevent your Mac from working as it is designed to work.
Never install any product that claims to "speed up", "clean up", "optimize", or "accelerate" your Mac. Without exception, they will do the opposite.
Never install pirated or "cracked" software, software obtained from dubious websites, or other questionable sources. Illegally obtained software is almost certain to contain malware.
Don’t supply your password in response to a popup window requesting it, unless you know what it is and the reason your credentials are required.
Don’t open email attachments from email addresses that you do not recognize, or click links contained in an email:
Most of these are scams that direct you to fraudulent sites that attempt to convince you to disclose personal information.
Such "phishing" attempts are the 21st century equivalent of a social exploit that has existed since the dawn of civilization. Don’t fall for it.
Apple will never ask you to reveal personal information in an email. If you receive an unexpected email from Apple saying your account will be closed unless you take immediate action, just ignore it. If your iTunes or App Store account becomes disabled for valid reasons, you will know when you try to buy something or log in to this support site, and are unable to.
Don’t install browser extensions unless you understand their purpose. Go to the Safari menu > Preferences > Extensions. If you see any extensions that you do not recognize or understand, simply click the Uninstall button and they will be gone.
Don’t install Java unless you are certain that you need it:
Java, a non-Apple product, is a potential vector for malware. If you are required to use Java, be mindful of that possibility.
Java can be disabled in System Preferences.
Despite its name JavaScript is unrelated to Java. No malware can infect your Mac through JavaScript. It’s OK to leave it enabled.
Block browser popups: Safari menu > Preferences > Security > and check "Block popup windows":
Popup windows are useful and required for some websites, but popups have devolved to become a common means to deliver targeted advertising that you probably do not want.
Popups themselves cannot infect your Mac, but many contain resource-hungry code that will slow down Internet browsing.
If you ever see a popup indicating it detected registry errors, that your Mac is infected with some ick, or that you won some prize, it is 100% fraudulent. Ignore it.
Ignore hyperventilating popular media outlets that thrive by promoting fear and discord with entertainment products arrogantly presented as "news". Learn what real threats actually exist and how to arm yourself against them:
The most serious threat to your data security is phishing. To date, most of these attempts have been pathetic and are easily recognized, but that is likely to change in the future as criminals become more clever.
OS X viruses do not exist, but intentionally malicious or poorly written code, created by either nefarious or inept individuals, is nothing new.
Never install something without first knowing what it is, what it does, how it works, and how to get rid of it when you don’t want it any more.
If you elect to use "anti-virus" software, familiarize yourself with its limitations and potential to cause adverse effects, and apply the principle immediately preceding this one.
Most such utilities will only slow down and destabilize your Mac while they look for viruses that do not exist, conveying no benefit whatsoever - other than to make you "feel good" about security, when you should actually be exercising sound judgment, derived from accurate knowledge, based on verifiable facts.
Do install updates from Apple as they become available. No one knows more about Macs and how to protect them than the company that builds them.
Summary: Use common sense and caution when you use your Mac, just like you would in any social context. There is no product, utility, or magic talisman that can protect you from all the evils of mankind.

  • I have OSX 10.4.11 and want to view my iCloud mail in my mail app, how do I do that, as my mail has stopped functioning properly.

I have a 2006 Macbook with osx 10.4.11.  I want to view my iCloud mail in my mail app.  Currently, my mail app is not functioning properly because it can not go online.  I imagine this has to do with the rollover to iCloud.  Will I be able to view my .mac mail in my mail app with iCloud, despite the fact I am operating with an obvious antiquated osx?
Thanks in advance for your help

What you have experienced, though annoying, doesn't necessarily mean someone has hacked your account, though if you were finding that you were blocked because the sending limit had been reached that might indicate that you had been hacked.
What can happen is that when people receive emails which appear to come from their own address but they haven't sent they naturally tend to be concerned: however it's most unlikely that anyone has hacked their account, they've just been targeted by one of two common spammers' techniques: both arise because it's all too easy to forge the 'from' address on messages to be something other than the real one.
There are two methods. One is that the sender has forged the 'from' address to be the same as the 'to' address (so other people will see it coming from themselves, not you), presumably in the hope of confusing spam filters. It's harmless, if extremely annoying. Delete it (never ever answer spam or try to unsubscribe from it), and you don't need to be worried about it.
The other problem is that a spammer is forging your address as the 'from' address on a whole batch of messages. The first thing you hear about this is when you start getting bounce messages because the spam has been sent to non-existent addresses and is being bounced to you. There's no point at all in responding to it. It's infuriating but normally stops after a bit as they move on to another forged address.
There isn't really anything you can do about it: closing the account isn't really worth the hassle unless you are totally swamped, because you will have to tell everyone your new address. Apple can't really do any more than they already are about spam. However changing your password on general principles is a good idea.

  • Mail.app suddenly stops moving Junk mail

I leave Mail.app running at home, because its spam filtering is the only thing that makes reading my mail on my iPhone bearable, since the iPhone does not have any spam capabilities of its own.
But a couple of days ago, Mail.app just stopped moving my spam. I've changed nothing about my setup, and it is identifying the mail as spam: select a message, and it has the brown bar and button to mark it as Not Junk. But it's still sitting in my Inbox. The Junk folder is still there, still visible, I can move messages into it by hand, but I want Mail.app to start behaving again.
This is not the first time it has happened to me, in all the versions of Mail I've used, but it is the first time in a while. I'm wondering if there's any way to make Mail.app behave again that doesn't involve me trashing all the learning Mail.app has done?

    Hello, I have used connection doctor and it says;
    For SSL accounts:
Could not connect to this SMTP server. Check your network connection and that you entered the correct information in the Account preferences. Also verify that the server supports SSL. If it does not, deselect the "Use SSL" checkbox in the Advanced tab of Account preferences.
    For SSL-off accounts:
Could not connect to this SMTP server. Check your network connection and that you entered the correct information in the Account preferences.
    For Mobile Me account:
Could not connect to this MobileMe IMAP server. Check your network connection and that you entered the correct information in the Account preferences. Also verify that the server supports SSL. If it does not, deselect the "Use SSL" checkbox in the Advanced tab of Account preferences.
I wonder why is that happening. Additionally, I do not know if it is related but, when I try to visit Godaddy website, everything is ok, but when I try to login (it goes to https website) I am unable to open it. Also, https://email.secureserver.net is not opening too.
If there is something about SSL certificates, why SSL off account is still not connecting?
    I am really confused.

  • Cannot Get Mail - Mail app has been frozen, no new downloads, since 7/14.

My mail app has been frozen since 7/14, and usually it just says it was updated on 7/2/14. However, occasionally, it gives me the message: "The mail server 'imap.gmail.com' is not responding. Verify that you have entered the correct account info in Mail settings."
Needless to say, I have done this. I have quit the app many times, reset the iPad, and finally last night I broke down and downloaded the 8.3 update (I was using 7.something before), and I am STILL getting this message and no new emails!
I can check on my phone and computer browsers just fine. Is there something I'm missing here? Really appreciate any help anyone can give. I finally got fed up not having this functionality.
    THANK YOU!!!!

I should mention the only other idea I've had is to delete my gmail account from my mail app, and re-add it later?

It's a 3rd party app.  You really should contact Adobe Support and/or post in the Adobe Forums
    Mac OS X (10.6.6)
Use Software Update or the OS 10.6.8 combo update to update your OS.  Also, update everything SU has to offer for your computer.  When done, repair permissions and restart your computer.

Open "Java Preferences" either from spotlight or your utilities folder...it's probably going to say you need to install a java runtime. Then just click install!

My On/Off switch has stopped functioning. No depression, no click and no response. Has anyone else had this problem and if so, did you solve it? How?

You have a hardware failure.  Bring your phone into Apple for replacement.  If it's under warranty, it will be replaced free of charge.  If not, you will be charged an out of warranty replacement fee of $149.00

opps.  Long title there... The past few days my Mail app has started downloading multiple copies of e-mails from all pop servers.  This is only happening on my Macbook not other macs.  Deleting mail from server does not help. I ran ClamXav found 2 viruses deleted those.  Checked for software update and installed suggested downloads.  Problem still contintues.  Any suggestions?

    Folks,
even after having repaired the inbox folder under "properties" a few times, I still had some e-mails where the contents are different from the subject line.
In other words in the inbox there are two e-mails: one with subject line "abc", and another one with subject line "def".
When I display the e-mail with the subject line "abc", the contents are from the e-mail with the subject line "def" in the in-basket.
What else can be done to correct this problem?
    Thanks and best regards.

Re CS5 Ruler tool has stopped functioning. How can I correct this problem?

First try re-setting the Ruler Tool from the tool's fly-out menu.
If that doesn't do it, then trash and recreate Photoshop preferences.
If you had at least indicated your platform, I could be more specific, but here it goes anyway:
To re-create the preferences files for Photoshop, start the application while holding down Ctrl+Alt+Shift (Windows) or Command+Option+Shift (Mac OS). Then, click Yes to the message, "Delete the Adobe Photoshop Settings file?"
